As I have mentioned in a few threads here, China is the leader in EV development and many big names in the automotive industry are trying hard to form JV with some of these well establish EV manufacturers.

And I vividly remember 1 MCFer even asked for 'China Talk' folder to be removed from the forum, wait till you see the motoring trend in the next 3 - 5 years...

Toyota City, Japan, April 2, 2020―BYD Company Ltd. (BYD) and Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) announced today that preparations have proceeded since they signed an agreement for the establishment of a joint venture company to conduct research and development of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) on November 7, 2019, and registration of the new company has been completed. Operations are scheduled to commence in May 2020. The name of the new company is BYD TOYOTA EV TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD. (BTET). Hirohisa Kishi from Toyota will serve as chairman, and Zhao Binggen from BYD will be the chief executive officer (CEO).

New Chairman Hirohisa Kishi said with regard to the establishment of the company, "With the engineers from BYD and Toyota working together under the same roof, we aim to develop BEVs that are superior in performance and meet the needs of customers in China by merging the two companies' strengths and also through friendly rivalry."

Newly appointed CEO Zhao Binggen commented, "This joint venture company will focus on the research and development of battery electric vehicles with technology and know-how from both China and Japan. The company is committed to promoting and populating high-quality technologies that make battery electric vehicles more environmentally friendly, safe, comfortable, and intelligent. Our vision is to create a future customer-first mobility style, and a harmonious society for humans and nature."

BYD and Toyota will work together to meet the diverse needs of customers by researching and developing BEVs that appeal to customers and promoting their widespread adoption and also hope to contribute to improving the environment in China.

BYD Reveals Ultra-Safe Blade Battery: Pierces It With A Nail

BYD Blade Battery leverages safety and improves volumetric energy density. Blade Battery will debut in the BYD Han (June 2020).

The Chinese battery and EV tycoon BYD officially launched its all-new Blade Battery, which within the next few months will debut in first electric models.

The Blade Battery is essentially a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, but in a new approach to significantly increase safety and volumetric energy density as well as reduce costs.

To improve the batteries, BYD changed the conventional prismatic LFP cells into thinner and longer cells, which were designed to become structural parts (beams) of the pack. That simplifies the pack design.

BYD argues that conventionally, only about 40% of the battery pack volume is batteries (cells take 80% of a module, and modules take 50% of the pack). In the case of the new Blade Battery approach - cell-to-pack (CTP) technology - the batteries take 60% of pack volume, which is a 50% improvement.

Blade Battery safety

The key point of the entire presentation was safety, as the new cells are even safer than the already relatively safe LFP.

BYD showed the results of a nail penetration test - of NCM, LFP and Blade Battery cells, in which the Blade Battery "emitted neither smoke nor fire after being penetrated, and its surface temperature only reached 30 to 60°C".

The Blade Battery also passed other extreme test conditions, such as being crushed, bent, being heated in a furnace to 300°C and overcharged by 260%. None of these resulted in a fire or explosion."

Part of the reason why the results are better is reportedly that the new shape extends the length of a short circuit and increases the cooling area. However, in general, the chemistry has a very high temperature for exothermic reactions.

BYD No Longer Hides Its Strategy To Rule The Electric Car World

The Blade Battery and Fudi attack core issues that may make BYD the EV standard.

When BYD announced its Blade Battery, back on March 29, we reported that as a promising new option with the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. Even Tesla will adopt it in China in a partnership with CATL. Anyway, according to an Interact Analysis report, that is just the tip of the iceberg in BYD’s plans for the future. And it plans to rule the EV world.

BYD did something else that went under the radar on March 16: it created Fudi. This brand gathers five companies that will sell batteries and EV components to other manufacturers. While that does not seem important, it is the stepping stone of BYD’s strategy. Just to give you an example, Volkswagen intends to do the same thing with its MEB platform.

The idea is that you have to share your technology to make it become the standard. Apple made the Macintosh and a great operating system that worked only for it. Microsoft made Windows. Sony made Betamax, which was regarded as the best video system in the world at the time. JVC shared VHS with the world. The rest is history.

Any automaker that manages to get other companies to use their technology will have an edge in determining where this technology will go. It will be the standard followed by others, something that helps not only from a strategic point of view but also in terms of sale volumes.

Volkswagen had that experience with the Beetle. Besides selling the car, it also sold engines and floor pans to a wide variety of small manufacturers. And it wants to repeat that with its electric platform, the MEB. We already spoke about that in an article back in July 2019: have a look. 

If BYD manages to sell the Blade Battery to other companies willing to have their own EVs, it will be in charge both of the way the technology develops and also of a fair chunk of the market it will create. And we did not even mention the motors, converter, and controllers BYD can also supply in the process.

The Blade Battery has a life cycle of 8 years or 1.2 million km. It is also extremely safe and 30 percent more affordable than other LFP battery packs, which are already a bargain compared to Li-ion equivalents. The Interact Analysis report says its cost could be as low as $90/kWh. According to Statista.com, Li-ion battery packs had a cost of $158/kWh in 2019. That translates into a 75.5 percent price advantage in favor of BYD’s new battery pack.

The first car to have the Blade Battery will be the Han. It was expected to go on sale in June, but the COVID-19 pandemic may have altered those plans. The sedan has an NEDC range of 605 km (376 miles) and goes from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds.

If the Blade Battery delivers what BYD promises, we can see Fudi having quite some success in selling its components to small and big manufacturers. It can help affordable EV projects finally become financially viable, and affordable electric cars are what we need to make the transition from the combustion engine to a cleaner transportation matrix.

Will other companies let BYD alone in these efforts to become the Microsoft of EVs? The more competition, the better.

Anyone will believe China can build such a fast accelerate car? Most ppl will not. Is there any proved? Well the 2nd generation (2018) Tang SUV was well received by many people. I hope I can own one Tang DM model.

Walau just watched the vid from bro Carbon82,

 

The infotainment screen can be tilted 90deg, horizotal or vertical, but, but......

 

The boot must use arm power to open and close!!!!!! Simply unacceptable.

Anyone will believe China can build such a fast accelerate car? Most ppl will not. Is there any proved? Well the 2nd generation (2018) Tang SUV was well received by many people. I hope I can own one Tang DM model. 

This car weight for 2000 Kg, if this car crash with a normal  small size car. I don't think the small car will survive.

BYD has just launched their new Han sedan in China.

Available in plug-in hybrid and electric configurations, the Han is an eco-friendly luxury car that will eventually be sold in a number of markets.

Starting with the electric versions, there is a long range variant in standard and premium trims. They cost ¥229,800 (S$45,633) and ¥255,800 (S$50,796), respectively.

Both have a 76.9 kWh battery pack and a front electric motor that develops 219 hp and 330 Nm of torque. They can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 7.9 seconds and travel up to 605 km in the NEDC cycle.

The high-performance variant starts at ¥279,500 (S$55,502) and adds a rear electric motor with 268 hp and 350 Nm of torque. This gives the all-wheel electric vehicle a combined output of 487 hp and 680 Nm of torque.

Those are some impressive numbers and they enable the Han to rocket from 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds which makes it “China’s fastest EV in production.” However, the performance comes at a cost as the range drops to 550 km.

For customers who aren’t ready to go fully electric, there’s the Han DM plug-in hybrid which starts at ¥219,800 (S$43,647). It features a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine which produces 189 hp and 320 Nm of torque. It’s joined by a 15.2 kWh battery and an electric motor that develops 241 hp and 330 Nm of torque.

This setup gives the car a combined output of 430 hp and 650 Nm of torque. It allows the model to run from 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds and claim the title as China’s fastest accelerating plug-in hybrid sedan. The model can also travel 81 km on electricity alone and 800+ km overall.

The Han is roughly the size of the Tesla Model S as it measures 4,960 mm (L), 1,910 mm (W) and 1,495 mm (H) with a wheelbase that spans 2,920 mm. It also comes equipped with LED headlights, flush-mounted door handles and digital key technology.

Moving into the cabin, there’s a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch floating infotainment system. Other highlights leather or Nappa leather seats, wood or aluminum trim, and a wireless smartphone charger. There’s also a dual-zone automatic climate control system and a heated / ventilated driver’s seat.

Like many modern automobiles, the Han comes equipped with an assortment of driver assistance systems including adaptive cruise control with stop and go, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist and traffic sign recognition technology. The model can also be outfitted with optional systems such as a blind spot monitor, rear collision warning and rear cross traffic alert.

After its launch in China, the Han will eventually arrive in Europe.

For what it's worth, BYD has more big name car designers in its employ than either Honda or Tesla.

Wolfgang Egger, previously chief of design at Audi, has been BYD’s head designer since late 2016.

Going the Hyundai-Kia route here.

BYD gets former Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz designers as head of exterior & interior design

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- BYD has recruited two famous designers who had worked for Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz, the Chinese automaker revealed the news by giving a slideshow at a business annual meeting on February 17.

One of designers is JuanMa López, former head of exterior design of Ferrari. He joined BYD as global exterior design director in last November, according to the record from LinkedIn. Aside from the career at BYD and Ferrari, he had worked at Seat as head of interior design, at Audi AG as interior design manager and at Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. as head of interior design & components.

JuanMa López reportedly got involved in the design of such super car models as the Ferrari 488, the LaFerrari, the Ferrari 458, the Ferrari Portofino as well as the Ferrari 812 Superfast. Besides, his works also include the Lamborghini Aventador, the Lamborghini Miura concept, the Lamborghini Murcielago GT, the Lamborghini Gallardo, the Audi Allroad Quattro concept and the Audi Concept S, etc.

The other designer Michele Jauch-Paganetti takes the post of chief interior design director at BYD. Before joining BYD, he was employed by Mercedes-Benz as the head of the design center in Italy, delivering masterpieces of the interior design for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the C-Class.
