In return, Mitsubishi will reportedly share its plug-in hybrid powertrain with Nissan.

The current Mitsubishi Outlander is nearing the end of its lifetime. The current model has been on sale since its 2014 model year, and it's about time for Mitsubishi to give its compact crossover a full revamp.

It won't be long, however, until we see the next-generation Outlander. It has been spied testing since September of last year, and it has been confirmed that a new one will debut this year. However, information about the next Outlander is still scarce at this point, as well as its expected styling, although these exclusive renderings should give you an idea of how it will look like.

What we know is that the Mitsubishi Outlander will be sharing its underpinnings with the next-generation Nissan Qashqai, which is scheduled to debut this year, as well. Both crossovers will ride on a platform developed by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance.

Automotive News, however, reported that the Outlander will be using a Nissan engine under its bonnet, marking the first time that a Mitsubishi vehicle will be using a Nissan mill. The information was from Japan's Nikkei business daily.

This signals a deeper alliance between the two Japanese marques, furthering the current strategy of cutting costs by sharing product development.

Kinda sad to know that once an automotive giant, now have to share platform and engine with another car brands.

With this implementation, there will not be any comparing when you shop for a new car except some costumes differences only. Currently Nissan is already on Renault engine on some models already. Another 5-10 years down the road, all jap cars are sharing the platform too. Ready no longer challenging anymore.

The styling is quite nice. Only sore point is the rear track - it needs to be widened to push the rear wheels out to fill the arches! Maybe a consequence of the shared platform...

For me I still think whether car company alliances will be able make anything good. From their perspective it's tech sharing and platform sharing keeping cost down. But deep inside their companies how they see each other I think it's quite evident. Former rivals to come together I mean the only good is keeping cost down. Whether any good car will come out of the alliance is highly doubtful.

The Youtuber Scotty held nothing back by saying these bad car makers coming together does not necessarily produce good cars. It's hard not to disagree with him actually.

one recent example of how renault famous engines screwed nissan is the 1.2T Qashqai vs the 2.0 one.

the horror stories of the PSA Prince engine also made BMW say tolong tolong no more...

mercedes was the next stupid one to jump in with renault for their 1.33T petrol. never learnt their lesson with the 1.5T diesels.
