I know nobody cares about Mediacorp dramas and actors though the Star Awards 2021 thread prove otherwise but let this serve as a reminder to everyone here about the dangers of drink driving and for those already convicted once for drink driving, how easy it is for one to reoffend again.

Drink and drive, pay the price.

Just wondering why in Shane's charge sheet (If found guilty again, he would be a repeat offender and face a driving ban of at least five years.), why wasn't a jail term mentioned?

Local actor Shane Pow was charged in court on Thursday (Apr 22) with drink driving.

Pow, who was named under his Chinese name Pow Xun Ping in his charge sheet, was given one count of driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to his charge sheet, he was driving a "motorvan" along Java Road towards Nicoll Highway at about 11.20pm on Sep 17, 2020 when he had at least 49 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of his breath, exceeding the 35 microgramme limit.

According to court documents, the 30-year-old Mediacorp actor was previously convicted in July 2014 of drink driving. If found guilty again, he would be a repeat offender and face a driving ban of at least five years.

Pow's lawyer S S Dhillon asked for six weeks to make representations. Mr Dhillon is also the lawyer for actor Terence Cao, who was charged last month with breaching COVID-19 laws during a birthday party.

The penalties for a repeat drink driving offence are a jail term of up to two years and a fine between S$5,000 and S$20,000.

"How is the Sentence for Drink-Drivers Decided?

When deciding the appropriate sentence for a driver convicted of drink-driving, the court will consider the following two factors:

1. The nature and degree of actual/potential harm that has resulted from the offence

2. The offender’s culpability for the offence"

Was he stopped at a road block? If he wasnt caught after causing accident ie. crashing into someone's car and/or causing injury I dont think there will be a jail term.

If he was caught at a road block and didnt do anything stupid and chop chop admit guilty in court, should be fine.

Ban for life?

Ban for life is more deserving.

Not much use. Remember the Maserati driver who dragged the TP for some distance and blamed it on "Kevin"? Having a lifetime ban did not stop him from driving on the road. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/man-charged-dangerous-driving-under-lifetime-ban-maserati-14444966

There are some offences and offenders where there's no way round a jail term for second offences. You may be stupid/foolish to commit an offence (drink driving) the first time but second time? Go in sit. Thank you.

Supercharged

Tot there was an amendment to the road traffic act to double the penalties in 2019 . Think if second offender , almost 100% go in sit for minimum 14 days ...

Agree that those "lifetime ban" is not effective if there is no enforcement. It doesnt unlearn the driving skill that the driver possess.
