  1. @Comage There are 101 ways to skin a cat. For shop operators they are trying all ways to increase productivity especially in Singapore where the workshops rental can take up a high proportion of the monthly gross income. With high labour shortage, it is nature that shops will keep on looking for time saving tools and equipment.

  2. Pressure brake bleeder is the way to go for total flush and removing small air bubbles lock in the brake pipe system due to long run and too much curves. Vacuum bleeder has its limitation for high end cars.

Most for the manually operated pressure brake bleeders from Taiwan makers  come equip with a standard european car brake reservoir. For Japanese car one can buy either a universal adaptor or adaptor specially design for each make of car

  3. Modern petrol engines are very compact in design. To remove spark plugs from European car engines, the mechanics may need to have spark plug socket ( thin wall type) & diferent drive configurations on all the plugs due to obstruction from maniford or other accessories.

  4. As per your description, it looks like the exhaust system is beyond repair. As for bi-annual inspection chances your car will fail:

    a)       Exhaust sound test

    b)      Undercarriage inspection test

    c)       Exhaust emission tester (due malfunctioning of the catalytic converter

As per above mentioned , the overall result = FAIL

  5. Generally, most shops should be able to handle this task. Make sure the shop you selected have this disc brake piston spreader for front brakes (many shops opt to using screwdriver or ply bar to drive back the brake pistons which may result in damaging the pistons n seals)

As for rear disc brakes, to drive back the brake pistons is difficult and time consuming if the shop do not have a screw back piston tool to do the work

At the same time it is best to do a complete brake fluid flush ,  preferrably with a pressure brake bleeder . Vacuum brake bleeder can also perform the work but will be slower and may not completely draw out the old fluid.

  6. 50/50 mixture - the coolant will boil at 107 deg C (228deg F) and freeze at -37deg C (-34deg F)

    70/30 mixture - the coolant will boil at 135 deg C (276deg F) and freeze at -64deg C (-84deg F)

Solution with more than 70% antifreeze will give less protection.

Pure antifreeze will freeze at -21C (-6 F)

Distilled or deionized water should be used for Ethylene glycol Or Propylene Glycol solutions

Piped water is often treated with chlorine, which is corrosive, and should be avoided.

One of the best method to determine if the coolant is properly mixed is to measure the strength or concentration of the antifreeze with a hydrometer.

After checking then you can safely decide to add more antifreeze or distilled water

  7. @Mkl22 U will understand more if you care to read up more on the characteristic and properties of Ethylene Glycol and Propylene Glycol Coolant when mix with the correct percentage of distilled water - at the right mixture and with the correct pressure cap , it will help to increase the coolant boiling temperature. It is also a rust inhibitor

  8. There are a handful of workshops using coolant hydrometers to do the distill water / glycol concentration ratio testing. Basically there are two type of coolant tester - Ethylene Glycol and Propylene Glycol Coolant Hydrometer. Generally Ethylene Glycol coolant hydrometer is used  on Asian vehicles coolant and Propylene Glycol Coolant hydrometer for European vehicles.

  9. Trapped Air bubbles is a common occurrence due to engine mounting where the radiator is seated slightly lower the highest point of the cooling system.

When refilling with new coolant, generally mechanics can use a) Universal Coolant Filling Kit or b) Vacuum Coolant Refilling Kit method to refill and remove the air bubbles trapped in the cooling system.

  10. It's difficult to DIY ATF replacment as especially on European Vehicles as most the drain fill opening needs a special refill adaptor. For some European cars you need to drain the fluid with special design key and drop the pan to to be replace with a new pan than comes with  filter.

Most professional shops are using ATF pneumatic dispenser so that the chances of getting the correct amount into the transmission is almost right without any excess ATF dripping out. Fast and clean job.

Over skimming the brake disc will result in the disc creating high frequency and vibration when subject to high speed braking. Always check manufacturer’s recommendation on the disc safety and acceptable thickness

When replacing the brake pads it is always a good practice for mechanic to manually remove or skim the disc edge to remove the disc edge to the same level as the disc wear surfaces.
