COE Bidding - 1st Round of June 2016

Was expecting CAT B to continue to drop from 46K. My car COE supposed to expire on 4 June. I had thought about scrapping the car and wait for COE to drop further. But there are 2 game changers - entry of Uber/Grab to buy new cars and the recent relax of loan rules. In the end, I renewed my car COE for another 5 years at 23K. Rationale is if COE rebound and chiong up, the paper value of my car will go up. If COE drops more than 12K (my forfeit parf value) from 46K, I can still scrap the car and buy a new one. This is my new strategy. I am not too concerned about new/old car, to me it's a transport tool for my family and how best to minimize this cost to my wallet.

    Unusual or Rare Cars

Suzuki Cappuccino caught in workshop! SCL plate. Probably the last unit in Singapore. Reminds me of the Initial D anime where Takumi's 86 raced this car.

    Swap civic FD headlights

Hi, My 2006 civic FD headlight (left side) has yellowish tinge. I am planning to renew COE. If you are scrapping your civic FD, I would like to swap the headlight with you, provided yours is in good condition. I would pay for workshop labour and a small token of appreciation. Kindly contact me if you are keen.

    HU/speakers from amazon

Thanks folks for the comments and advice. I was worried about the frequency of US head unit sets - looks like I am right. Class 95 is important to me. So I will probably only order the front speakers from Amazon. Will go Mustafa to look see look see. For class 95, can you set the frequency as 95.1 or 94.9 and still get a clear listen?
  9. Hi folks, I am thinking of buying Pioneer HU and speakers from Amazon.com. Will they be compatible to use in Singapore?

iirc, the window of opportunity to secure low COE prices (below $10k) was quite short, say a few months, according to 2009 experience. So those who benefited were a small group of buyers out of the entire car population. If COE ever drops to $10k this time, my opinion is that the window of opportunity will be longer than 2009 because of the loan quantum rule. For eg, a buyer will now have to fork out $30k or 50% for a new $60k CAT A car. No such thing in 2009 so low-middle income buyers could borrow at 100% during 2009, therefore COE prices picked up fast when it hit the bottom. The loan quantum rule is the game changer this time. It kills the low-mid income car aspirants. In Singapore context, car demand will greatly exceed supply if low-mid income people can buy cars. I don't mean to be nasty but there is no good reason why they should be spending most of their income to maintain a car.

iirc, the window of opportunity to secure low COE prices (below $10k) was quite short, say a few months, according to 2009 experience. So those who benefited were a small group of buyers out of the entire car population. Hardly making a difference to traffic conditions. Now the key is to time your purchase perfectly if the COE will drop to below $10k this time. Not everyone will be able to do it, due to all sorts of reasons and fears. It's usually the hustlers who win.

A car is a WANT, not a NEED. Water is a NEED. A small car is a small WANT and a big car is a big WANT. I keep hearing people that they need a car for work, for family, to zai cai, etc. Well, there is always bus, mrt or taxi to move their ar$e (pardon my lang) around. I think they tell themselves this to justify paying sky high COE prices to own a car. If everyone is rational about owning a car, I think COE prices will be more rational as well. But hey, this is Singapore. Just my 2 cents.

I agree that if COE price rebounds in the future, the paper loss now is insignificant. However, for people who is buying at lower COE prices, they will benefit from paper gain (when COE price rebounds in the long run). It's not often that one can make money out of selling cars, so when the opportunity to buy at lower COE price gets closer, just wait lor.

2016 Jan, 2nd COE Bidding Exercise

Excerpt from article on Yahoo today. “I think, in the two weeks including the (motor) show, we did maybe one month’s worth of sales. Maybe one-and-a-half months, in fact,” says a senior operations manager from a multi-brand franchise. “But nothing moved in Cat B.” Buyers (from $40-50k band) put in their buy orders earlier due to $45k CAT A COE and the motorshow. This explains the extraordinary high number of bids for CAT A COE yesterday. This part is pretty clear. Backlog aside, when new buy orders drop significantly in the following month or two (due to exhaustion), will the ADs bid aggressively? Did the motorshow help to push COE prices down quicker**? **Excluding outliers, the general trend for COE prices is down. No indication of stabilisation yet. I am assuming it will decline further.

Do you think the garmen has invisible accounts which put in bids during the bidding process to manipulate prices? Just saying.... not accusing anyone of anything..
