Europe's largest carmaker said it would voluntarily recall all gasoline-powered Passats it had sold from the 1999 through 2005 model years for inspection and possible repair. The wide recall marks a setback for VW at a time when it has set ambitious targets for growth in the U.S. market and is considering building a new auto plant in North America. Volkswagen said some Passat vehicles with an automatic transmission have an underbody heat shield that could be subject to damage, creating a risk if it touches the exhaust system. Other vehicles will be inspected for potential damage to a fuel tank ventilation valve and a fuel line, VW said. Volkswagen said no accidents or injuries have been reported because of the defects. VW advised owners and drivers of the Passat sedans covered by the recall to go immediately to the nearest dealership or certified repair shop if they smell gasoline. VW will issue recall notices to Passat owners by the end of May, it said.

Back up 2 years. In China the Passat from the B5.5 variant they updated it in 2007-2008 the Skoda stretched design which was basically a Skoda Superb with a revamp grill and rear. (funny thing is that the Superb is base on the Passat B5 but stretched and the internals are different. ) Fast forward to 2009, this is the updated model for 2009 which has a revised front lamps, grills and rear but internally is still a Superb. NHTSA to probe Volkwagen Passat engine fires Associated Press WASHINGTON -- The government has upgraded an investigation into the Volkswagen Passat after receiving dozens of reports of engine fires. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a posting on its Web site Tuesday that there had been 78 reports of engine fires and two injuries. The German automaker has received 14,850 warranty claims over the engine fires, the government said. The investigation, which began in May, is focused on about 345,000 Passat sedans from the 2000-2003 model year. NHTSA said many of the complaints attribute the fires to a failure of the ignition coil. Volkswagen has provided the government with information on the vehicle's three different engines and ignition systems. The investigation was upgraded to allow additional analysis. On the way home from Bishan today abt 11.30am, witness an accident between a Nissan Cedric taxi and VW Passat. All caught in my camera but there is a car in front so the impact was blocked. The VW was turning right and the taxi going straight. Immediately after impact, VW still can drive to the side of the road with its front totally gone.:z The stupid Altis driver in front stare n didnt move after green light, I need to horn him for him to move. The new Volkswagen long-wheel based Passat looks to uncanningly like a Superb with an Audi A4-looking behind? But anyways by right the Superb is based of the original Passat, are they a long running production line, especially that now that Volkswagen in China is picking up production of Skodas in China, parts wise and Chasis wise a very smart move, keeps inventory down. The interior is just tooooooo Superb don't you think? Dose this mean that all our Superbs has a potential to add on this Passat body kit? ok... one more. surprised that there's no discussion on this sleek car. looks like VW is really into tan leather these days... The passat cc will be available with the choice of a 160 hp 1.8-litre TSI unit, a 2.0-litre turbocharged FSI engine and a range topping 3.6-litre V6 FSI model producing 300 hp and will go on sale in the 2nd quarter of 2008.

For those who reads MCF but not straits times VW recalls Audi and Passat cars WOLFSBURG (Germany) - German car giant Volkswagen (VW) said yesterday it was recalling some 870,000 Passat and Audi models worldwide as a result of potential problems with the front axle. VW said in a statement it was offering owners of 870,000 Passat and Audi models a free check for possible damage of the rubber bellows of the front axle. Advertisement The company expects that about 1 per cent of the vehicles affected by the recall will need repairs, a spokesman said. It said the problem could lead to premature wear and, in isolated cases, to the failure of the bearing arm. The models affected were the VW Passat built between 1996 and 1999, the Audi A4 and A8 built between 1994 and 1999, and the Audi A6 built between 1997 and 1999. -- AFP, AP
