  3. Volvo XC90 and BMW X5L: The sludge match By Autocar Buy one and your life will almost certainly be made easier Let's get two things straight right away. First, the non-off-roading off-roader may be the most maligned of motoring breeds, but it's also one of the most bought. We're converts; you need to have driven a big four-wheel drive around town to get the appeal of sitting high above traffic, unfazed by kerbs, with seats, space, cupholders and cubbyholes only a people carrier can match, yet without the dowdy image. We're not going to debate whether you should buy one; your life will almost certainly be made easier if you do. Second, this test won't give much weight to these cars' ability to scale Scafell Pike. Only a tiny minority of those sold in the UK will even venture onto its foothills. Plainly, this hands a clear advantage to the two cars you really want to read about - the XC90 and the BMW X5 - as well as the Mercedes ML. But it will be instructive to see if there's any point buying a capable off-roader for road use; as we'll see, the Volvo, BMW and Mercedes don't get it all their own way. Buy one of these and practicality and ease are clearly more important to you than lap times; they make most sense with the economy and lazy low-revs urge of a diesel, so that's how we've specified them. The XC90 immediately looks impressive; for your
  4. This is what a really sludge up engine look like.
  5. Ever since the X5 was launched, BMW's rivals in the 'soft-roader' market have struggled to keep up. So with the imminent arrival of a smaller version, things are going to be very tough for the likes of the Audi Allroad and Volvo XC70. Whereas the X5 is marketed as a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), the X3 is a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), which means the emphasis is its on-road behavious - the X3 isn't for tackling serious rough stuff. At first there'll be a choice of 231bhp petrol or 204bhp diesel engines, both with a capacity of 3.0 litres and both being in-line sixes. Later on other variants will follow, but whichever powerplant is chosen the car has a top speed of 130mph, although a Sports Package can be specified which takes the top speed up to 135mph for the oil-burner and 139mph for the petrol car. If you like the car to do all the gear changing you'll be able to specify a five-speed auto, but the standard transmission for both models is a six-speed manual. Whatever gearbox is fitted the car will have xDrive, which is an electronically controlled four-wheel drive system that feeds the torque to whichever end of the car can most easily cope with it. When xDrive is combined with BMW's DSC traction control system, you'd have to be driving like a complete lunatic to come unstuck - or at least that's the idea... Kit levels are pretty high, with plenty of electronic gadgetry to keep you out of trouble. Hill Descent Control is included along with ABS, EBD, TC and DSC and some even more obscure acronyms. But if you're desperate to spend even more cash there are all sorts of toys on offer such as sat-nav - the X3 will be at your local BMW dealership from next spring. Richard Dredge (from BBC TopGear)
  6. Hi, Recently saw a black bmw "speacial edition" around Jurong East. But after a couple of seconds, I noticed that it is an Octy. The front grill is the same except that the owner put some chrome trimming at the centre to divide it into 2, thus making it look like an BMW. Anyone saw this car? Too bad I didnt see the car plate.

    BMW ADT Course

I attended it and ADT Saved my ride........ .........and possibly my life too Was on the ECP, and part of the road was wet, considering it rained pretty heavily earlier. Going at a comfortable speed of ~80km/h :x in second lane. Out of the blue yonders, suddenly, this !#$@#%#$^& black merc, out of Lane 1 crosses out of his path into my lane, with me barely 15m away...knn.....instinctively, or taught, I jammed brake, and the ABS kicked in, giving my foot a nice reflexology....thoughts crossed my mind and in split second, I looked at my rear, making sure all was clear and swerved into lane 3, barely missing the butt of the @#%#%#%#@hole... man, it was EXACTLY like wat I learnt on Sat!!! Just before the ABS kicked in, my b@!!s were in my throat man but tk heavens all went well.....I modified the stunt a bit, as I managed AFTER the swerve to HORN and GLARE at the bugger...knn...lady driver..#@$#@#@%%#@ All I can say, is if not for the ADT, I would most have prolly jam-braked and slammed! However, all is diff now.....
  10. URL - http://www.motioncars.com/autobuzz/article...w_5-series.html Spied! BMW's Fifth Generation 5-series By Ulysses Ang After boasting about the advantages of a normally aspirated, high-revving engine, BMW seems to be giving into what its competitors have been doing: relying on forced air. The fifth-generation 5-series is expected to make a debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March with a 380 bhp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6. Other engines that will complete the 5-series' line-up include a new 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4. Of course, the usual normally aspirated inline-6s in 2.2-liter, 2.5-liter and 3.0-liter displacements will still be made available. A few months into sales, the 7-series' 3.6-liter and 4.5-liter V8s will be made available. Underneath, the 5-series will use a lightweight hybrid construction found in the Z8 and the Rolls-Royce Phantom. The new suspension system will use an aluminum spaceframe with extensive use of aluminum bits to keep the weight below the 2002 model. The new 5-series is not expected to carry the entire safety and comfort features of the current 7-series, however, it is rumored to carry a steering system that corrects for high-speed cross winds and heavy braking; an automatic damping suspension system; dynamic stability controls and a less complex iDrive system. From these photos, the new BMW 5-series looks like a shrunken 7-series. Though the looks maybe questionable, the performance certainly isn't with new turbocharged engines available for the first time.

  17. Heard the new 320 is about $150K, whereas the old 318 costs $120+ discounted... Why compare new 320 with old 318? Because the engine is essentially the same 4 pot! The 2.2 smooth 6 is no longer available for 320 unlike the last gen. Got to go for 325 or 330 for smooth 6 action nowadays. So basically $30K for new body and gadgets...hmmm....
  18. WHY NOT!!! Colour it BLACK and you've got the Sith's Revenge...
  19. Some pics taken from the BMW SG Forum of how the next generation of the BMW 3-Series will probably look like. Looks like the Chris Bangle "influence" continues on.......
  20. In an attempt to appease traditional owners, BMW is modifying its flagship 7-Series. A facelifted version is due later next year. The current 7-series is the work of BMW design chief Chris Bangle who has created some truly eye-catching models, including the new Z4. Although the modifications to the 7-Series are minor, the Munich-based marque hopes they will placate potential customers and dealers worldwide who disliked the front and rear-end design. Another target for criticism has been the iDrive system which can be used to operate the radio/TV, Sat-Nav, telephone and air-conditioning among other things. The system has already been reworked - and simplified - for the new 5-Series. The facelifted 7-Series will have a softer look. The most visible changes will be the new headlights and wider, more curved trademark twin-kidney grille. There will also be new bumpers front and rear. Published in the Irish Times 06 August 2003

    Beautiful BMW!!!

With all the reports coming out on the new BMW 5-Series, and, wanting so badly for it to be the standout (head and shoulders) above ALL the rest, the UGLY exterior just keeps getting in the way!!! Here's just a couple of pics I could find of what I think is the most beautiful BMW of all time (designed by Bertone): the 3200 CS Coupe and Convertible 1961-1965 (precursor to the 6-Series).
