There’s a time and place to go fast guys, and the carpark is not one of them. What happened? An overzealous Volkswagen Beetle was going fast enough in a multi-storey carpark (MSCP) at Bukit Merah Central to break through the metal and concrete barriers. Someone managed to record footage of the incident from their car, likely through dashcam. Can’t imagine how loud that would have been on the outside. Hope there wasn’t anyone under the car with those bricks sent flying. Online chatter People speculated on why he ended up here, and noted his choice of car for this stunt. During the early 1970s, Volkswagen released a special edition Beetle known as the Beetle GSR. The GSR moniker is short for Gelb Schwarzer Renner which is German for yellow black racer. The original Volkswagen Beetle GSR was built in limited numbers; 3,500 units were manufactured and they were only available for the German market. It was such a huge hit that it was sold out within two months. Volkswagen is bringing back the yellow black racer for 2014 and just like before, only 3,500 units will be built but this time it will be made available worldwide. The GSR will be one of the fastest Beetle Volkswagen ever built. It will be fitted with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that delivers around 210bhp and a torque value of 280Nm. The Beetle GSR completes the 0-100km/h timing in 6.6 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph (209km/h). The engine is said to be the same unit that will be featured in the Beetle Turbo and the Jetta GLI. The Beetle GSR features a unique black and yellow colour scheme, both exterior and interior. The car receives the Beetle's R-Line bodykit and it is fitted with 19" aluminium-alloy wheels which are wrapped with 235/40 tyres. The brake callipers are painted in black to accentuate the colour scheme. In the interior department, the seats and steering wheel are upholstered in black leather and stitched with contrasting yellow thread. The Beetle GSR is based on the Beetle Turbo with Sunroof and Sound model. It receives a comprehensive list of equipment such as a Fender audio system, xenon headlights, Bluetooth connectivity and a start push button. A limited edition number badge is situated at the bottom of the steering wheel (1 to 3500). The Volkswagen Beetle GSR was recently showcased at the Chicago Auto Show and the company will include it in its 2014 model line-up. -
Volkswagen premieres off-road capable Beetle in Detroit

With the world premiere of the Beetle Dune at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Volkswagen gave the public the chance to see a Beetle with a cooler, off-road look. Finished in an 'Arizona', yellow/orange metallic paintwork, the flared wheel arches are finished in a contrasting black. It is no Land Rover for sure, but it looks tough enough to take on the gruelling Dakar Rally don't you think? Overall, the Dune has grown compared with the R-Line model - on which it is based. The overall length has increased to 4,290mm and the car is both 50mm higher off the ground and 20mm taller. The wheel housings widen the body by 27mm per side to give a total width of 1,864mm. Mechanically, the Dune uses the running gear from the Beetle R-Line. Under the hood, there's a 210bhp rated turbocharged 2.0-litre TSI engine running the front wheels. Combined with a six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission, the Beetle Dune has a manufacturer estimated fuel economy rating of up to 12.3km/L. As with all U.S. Beetle R-Line models, the electronic XDS differential is also offered as standard. The wheel arch extensions transition into brushed aluminium sill trim panels, between which there's a chrome plated underbody skidplate. Meanwhile, the distinctive Dune logo is placed ahead of the rear fenders. The bottom of the door mirrors are in black, with the rest of the mirror being vapour-coated in aluminium. The front end is revised by the adoption of a new hood, which has a raised centre section, flanked by prominent air vents. Similarly the redesigned front apron features a large central air intake. The Dune team also revamped the interior, with two particular areas of attention. The dashboard is painted in the body colour, while the classic Beetle bin has been replaced by a grab handle that features contrasting black soft-touch material with 'Arizona' and aluminium accents. The outer surfaces of the front sport seats and the two rear seats are upholstered in 'Titan Black' leather, while the centre surfaces are made of 'Ceramic' coloured 'Gobi'breathable sport fabric. The leather and fabric areas and the front and rear of the head restraints have decorative body coloured stitching. -

The Volkswagen Beetle is an iconic car and some rock stars have probably driven them (especially the original Beetle). And now the German automaker has infused the rock and roll formula into one of its newest models, the current generation Beetle. Volkswagen will introduce a special edition Beetle at the Leipzig Auto Show and it will be known as the Beetle Fender Edition. The car was first seen as a concept car at the 2011 Frankfurt International Auto Show. The car will get several Fender-unique features which demonstrate its affiliation with the American musical icon. Many would know about Fender as one of the major producers of guitars and its accessories and many professional musicians such as Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix have used their products. The company recently expanded into the car audio business by teaming up with Panasonic to produce sound systems for Volkswagen. The Beetle Fender Edition stands out with unique interior and exterior styling. Its distinctively painted dashboard features the classic sunburst colour of Fender guitars, and the vehicle's interior is accented with colour-contrasting seams that complement the dash's colours. Beetle Fender Edition vehicles equipped with the 200-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four- cylinder TSI engine will receive seats with exclusive fabric inserts. Outside, all Beetle Fender Edition vehicles are painted in Deep Black Metallic and also feature brushed chrome exterior mirrors, 18-inch "Disc" aluminium-alloy wheels, bi-xenon head lights, and the famous Fender logo. The Fender Premium Audio System debuted in the Jetta GLI in the United States and the Beetle is the first Volkswagen vehicle in Europe equipped with the high-performance sound setup. Using proprietary Panasonic speaker technology, the system cuts through noise and other distractions with front dual-voice coil speakers to create a sound closely similar to a true, live performance. The New Volkswagen Beetle needs to be more like Kate Beckinsale

The photo above shows what a 320hp new Volkswagen New Beetle 2.0TFSi looks like. The car is tuned by German tuners B&B (don't really know who they are as too many tuners seem to be popping out of the German woodwork) and it comes complete with cheesy go-faster 'Turbo' stickers emblazoned on its side, a lowered stance and larger matte black rims. After all of that it still doesn't look fast. I somehow think Volkswagen has actually missed its target of making the latest version of the New Beetle more masculine. Take a look at Volkswagen's Beetle R Concept with its Audi R8 style front bumper and it still looks a little Jennifer Aniston in a call girls outfit. If it were a man it would be Boy George instead of George of the Jungle. It needs to be Kate Beckinsale instead. I will get to Miss Beckinsale in a moment. I think the original Volkswagen Beetle in 'race clothing' is more masculine that this and the earlier version. It could be because of the really bulbous arches. Or the fact that it actually looked good with mag wheels. Even the previous Beetle RSi looked slightly awkward with that paste on rear wing. It looks like it was more suitable for Miss Aniston instead of a manly man like Phua Chu Kang. Maybe they need to find a little more aggression in the design. I mean there are really cool looking women out there like Kate Beckinsale or Angelina Jolie as inspiration for Beetle designers. Maybe they should be looking at a feminine Beetle with a hint of black leather. Kate Beckinsale in leather in those Underworld movies is where they should start. It isn't about making the Beetle look masculine, but something that incorporates sex and violence. What the current Beetle is to me is a car devoid of any sexiness and violence. There's no real cuteness too. It still looks forced retro unlike the BMW Mini and the new Fiat 500. So how should Volkswagen design the new Beetle then? If you think about it the Nissan Fairlady 350/370Z does this quite well. Curves (sexy), in all the right places, a feminine name and oversteer when you want it (violence) when you want it. -

Tanner Foust Racing ENEOS RWB Beetle makes an appearance at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show after making its debut at SEMA last November. A collaboration between the famous Top Gear USA host cum VW rallycross driver, Tanner Foust and well-known Porsche tuner RAUH-Welt Begriff (RWB), the slammed beetle dons a unique bodykit that adds around eight inches to its width. Custom 18- inch Motegi Racing Traklite wheels make sure the wheel arches are filled in nicely. No details were given on whether any changes were made under the hood but it is likely not much was done up mechanically. -
Volkswagen previews the Volkswagen Beetle R concept: Aggressive enough for you?

Volkswagen has previewed the Volkswagen Beetle R concept at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. What this concept car shows is basically the Full Monty of Volkswagen Beetles if they put it into production. It shows off a redesigned and more aggressive bodykit, a bonnet with vents on it, a rear diffuser with quad-tailpipes and 20 inch wheel combo for the exterior. It also shows off a more luxuriously trimmed interior featuring nappa leather wrapped sports seats, a revised aluminium meter cluster, aluminium pedals and other unique to the Beetle R trim. As for what sits in the engine bay, we do not know as yet as Volkswagen has only hinted that it may have the same power output as the 266hp Volkswagen Golf R. So the question that begs asking is this: Do all the mods make the Volkswagen Beetle R a more macho car? One that motorheads, petrolheads and gearheads would drool over, go weak in the knees or feel that driving one is better than sex or one still destined like its less brutal looking siblings and be the favourite of hairdressers or crossdressers alike? I think the Volkswagen Beetle R is still for the latter group of people. You know why? If you really took a long look at the new, slightly lower, wider Beetle you could see that it looks like a slightly taller Porsche 911 (930 series) from the 1970s -1980s. What the bodykit needs to ape a little more is the whale tail of the 930 911 Turbo. The front already has modern day Porsche aping looks, why not add a retro but totally outrageous touch like that Porsche whale tail? And while they're at it, add wider rear arches so that the car goes truly aggressive. I can vouch that there will be people who would love a Beetle with some early Porsche DNA built into them. Retro may work well with the Beetle R. What the Volkswagen Beetle R concept to me is something still incomplete. It looks quite aggressive, but not gut wrenching aggressive enough. After 13 years of production, Volkswagen has finally revealed the third incarnation of their iconic Beetle, simultaneously launching it at the Shanghai and New York Motor Shows this week. The new Beetle is purported to be larger and more mature than before, as evidence by its size and shape. I'm not sure whether the new Beetle will be able to shed its image as a 'girly' car though. It still looks reasonably cute with its shape, and will no doubt still attract its fair share of feminine drivers. But a friend of mine made an interesting observation as to how Volkswagen can market the Beetle to broaden its appeal. You see, in the 60s, the Beetle and the Microbus were icons for hippie travel. Thousands of these eccentric youths travelled in their Beetles and Microbuses across America in their new age movement. Fast forward to now, in the 21st century, and there is a new wave of 'hippies', in the form of the green movement. If Volkswagen comes up with a green Beetle (painted green for effect), powered by an electric or hybrid powertrain, then it could surely find itself being the new icon for a new generation. What do you think? Makes sense? Or am I just talking nonsense?

Rumour has it that Volkswagen is preparing a performance version of the all new Beetle. But before Volkswagen releases such a vehicle, the German automaker is giving us a glimpse of what the future might have in store by offering us the Volkswagen Beetle R-Line. The Volkswagen Beetle R-Line model is available in two different packages; an exterior package and an interior package. The exterior package may be ordered separately, while the interior package is always offered as an extension of the R-Line exterior details. The exterior package includes front bumpers with independent black grained air inlets and chrome surrounds for the directional indicators, a rear diffuser, special body side panels and door mirror housings in body colour, R-Line logos on the front body beneath the A-pillars and 18 inch "Twister" alloy wheels. The R-Line interior package includes sport seat system with seats upholstered with an active-breathing fabric in "Kyalami" design, front head restraints with R-Line badge, leather trimmed sport steering wheel, the gear shift lever boot and the handbrake grip with decorative seams in "Art Grey" and decorative inlays in "Dark Vanadium.

The totally new 2012 Volkswagen Beetle has barely hit most markets around the world but as usual, the tuning houses have gotten their hands on it. ABT, known for tuning VW Group cars have their pimped out Beetle ready and wants us to call it the 'Speedie'. A bodykit, alloy wheels and 'go-faster' stripes and it deserves to be called 'Speedie'? I doubt it if you went out and bought the base 105bhp 1.2-litre TSI version. Even with ABT's ECU tweaks for that engine. But do continue reading anyway. Anyway, the ABT Volkswagen Beetle Speedie (which I think is what it's called in full) is basically ABT's first step in tuning the all new, new Beetle (I just had to say it in this way as this IS the revamp of the first new Beetle). ABT have not finalized details of the engine mods and have just stated that the Speedie will have tweaks for its looks. It has a complete bodykit -

Volkswagen is issuing a recall for 2,471 units of the 2012/2013 model year beetle due to an incorrectly-coded Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS) control module. The affected cars are fitted with the leather sport seats and were built between February 2012 and August 2012. The problem may cause the front passenger airbag to deploy even if a child is secured in a passenger restraint, causing potentially serious injury. Specifically, if the leather seat gets wet, the PODS may not properly detect a child restraint that is secured on the front passenger seat and thus the airbag will not be deactivated. The problem was discovered during routine factory inspections. Fortunately, according to Volkswagen, no injuries have been reported as a result of this issue. VW will replace the control modules free of charge. Anyway, as a precaution, children in child restraints are always recommended to be secured in the back seat.

The iconic Volkswagen Beetle will be introduced at the Los Angeles Autoshow in November 2011. The new version, expected to go on sale in May 2011, will continue paying homage to the classic form. It is expected to have a more interesting engine lineup as compared to the current model. For the petrol options, the 1.2L TSI engine seen on the VW Polo, together with the highly-acclaimed 1.4 Twincharged powerplant are expected. A 2.0L engine producting 210 bhp could be seen on the car as well. I believe this is lifted from the hood of the Mark 6 Golf GTI. Autocar says that the vehicle will have a wider stance and longer wheelbase as it will be produced at the same plant, and on the same architecture, as the VW Jetta. The Beetle is expected to get a MacPherson strut front, torsion beam rear suspension, though a multi-link rear is also possible. Beetle's dynamics is expected to improve, with the ride becoming more supple. Look for exterior changes to be inspired by the 2005 Volkswagen Ragster concept. According to a reliable source, the new model is more contoured, with additional structuring and defined feature lines used to help to break up the simple surfacing and unadorned character of the current model. The next-generation Volkswagen Beetle concept will be introduced at the Los Angeles auto show in November, according to Autocar. Citing unidentified sources, the magazine claims the car will get a renewed look, and should feature more inspired engine choices as it is prepped for a 2011 market release. A 2.0-liter engine producing 210 bhp (213 PS, 157 kW) could be seen on the car, more powerful than any engine currently sold on the vehicle. Also expected are 1.4-liter 160 bhp (162 PS, 119 kW) and 1.2-liter 105 bhp (106 PS, 78 kW) petrol engines. Diesel offerings could include 2.0-liter 140 bhp (142 PS, 104 kW) and 1.6-liter 105 bhp (106 PS, 78 kW) units. Customers in the US might get the chance to purchase the car with a five-cylinder 2.5-liter model cranking out 170 bhp (172 PS, 127 kW). The company is also toying with the idea of producing a hybrid version of the car.
