  3. Bentley Motors is today announcing the introduction of a new model to its range – the Flying Spur V8 S. Taking its place between the Flying Spur V8 and family flagship W12, the V8 S is tuned for power and performance, with increased engine output and revised suspension offering a more focused, precise driving experience. The Flying Spur V8 S features a number of sporting styling cues which hint at its new and improved sporting capabilities. A black radiator grille and rear diffuser along with a unique grille insert give the new model a dramatic and purposeful appearance to match its enhanced performance. Wolfgang Dürheimer, chairman and chief executive of Bentley Motors, said: “The Flying Spur remains unrivalled in its ability to combine class-leading comfort with remarkable dynamic ability. It’s the perfect choice for the customer who wants ultimate refinement as well as an exhilarating, spirited drive.” The Bentley Flying Spur V8 S will make its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show between 1 and 13 March 2016. Tuned for power, Bentley’s renowned 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 S engine develops an additional 21 PS, delivering 528 PS (521 bhp / 388 kW) compared to its V8 sibling’s 507 PS (500 bhp / 373 kW). A mighty 680 Nm (502 lb.ft) is on offer from 1,700 rpm. This powers the Flying Spur V8 S to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds (0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds), shaving 0.3 seconds from the V8’s already athletic sprint time. Top speed is 306 km/h (190 mph). The increased performance is achieved without detriment to the V8 engine’s impressive fuel economy and CO2 emissions, or its ability to cover more than 837 km (520 miles) between fill-ups. The new Flying Spur V8 S returns a combined cycle fuel economy of 10.9 L/100km (25.9 mpg) and CO2 emissions of 254 g/km.
  4. More information on Uber's flying car plans will be revealed at its annual summit which will be held in Dallas this week. Travel times are expected to fall greatly. As reported by City A.M, the summit will allow the company to build awareness for its aerial technology and is spearheaded by Mark Moore, an advanced aircraft engineer that worked for NASA for 30 years. Moore was known to have caught the attention of Google Chief Executive Larry Page after publishing a paper about the feasibility of electric aircraft in 2010. Uber's flying car program, which is dubbed Uber Elevate, will allow its users to get to places via 'vertiports' using Vertical Take-off and Landing aircraft (VTOL). Uber claims that these aircraft will cut travel time greatly as they are able to travel independently of a specific path, unlike buses and trains. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohig71bwRUE

  6. Slovak engineer Stefan Klein posing with his car models in Bratislava, Slovakia on Dec 17, 2013. Mankind's primordial dream of flight is taking off with a new twist as a Slovak prototype of a flying car spreads its wings. Mankind's primordial dream of flight is taking off with a new twist as a Slovak prototype of a flying car spreads its wings. Inspired by the books about flying by French authors Jules Verne and Antoine de Saint Exupery, Slovak designer and engineer Stefan Klein has been honing his flying machine since the early 1990s. "I got the idea to start working on a vehicle of the future at university, but honestly, who hasn't dreamt of flying while being stuck in the traffic?" Klein told AFP. "Flying's in my blood -- my grandfather and my father flew ultra-light aircraft and I got my pilot's license before I was old enough to drive a car," said Klein, who has designed cars for BMW, Volkswagen and Audi and now teaches at the Bratislava-based Academy of Fine Arts and Design. His elegant blue-and-white vehicle for two is six metres (20 feet) long so it fits neatly in a parking space or a garage and tanks up at any filling station. But once it reaches an airport it can unfold its wings within seconds becoming a plane. Dubbed "the world's prettiest and best-designed airborne automobile so far" by US aviation magazine Flying and Inhabitat.com design, an innovation website, the Aeromobil also has the distinction of originating in Slovakia, the world's largest per-capita car producer. "So far there have been about twenty attempts to manufacture a flying car around the globe," the president of the Slovak Ultra Light Aviation Federation, Milan Ciba, told AFP. "Among them, Aeromobil appears very viable," he said. Other models include the US-based Terrafugia's "Transition" flying car expected to be launched on the market within a year, while the helicopter-type Dutch PAL-V gyrocopter could go on sale in this year. Klein's dream took to the skies in September when he piloted the Aeromobil during its first wobbly test flight. Once airborne, the it can reach a top speed of 200km/h (124 mph) and travel as far as 700 km (430 miles), consuming 15 litres (4 gallons) of petrol per hour. "A combination of a car and a plane will always lose against the competition when we start comparing energy consumption," Jan Lesinsky from the Slovak University of Technology told AFP. But would-be users could glide by long lines and security checks at airports, saving time on medium-distance journeys. Klein and his team are currently working on the next generation of Aeromobil that will go into production in a few months and hopefully receive Slovak Ultra Light Aircraft Certification (SFUL). "Would-be users would have to follow the legislation already in place for ultra light aircraft," SFUL president Federation Milan Ciba told AFP. "Pilot/drivers will need to have both a driver's and pilot's licence with at least 25 flying hours," he added. An enthusiastic pilot himself, Klein remains down to earth when looking to the future. "I don't expect Aeromobil to go into mass production, it will always be an alternative means of transport," Klein said. "It can, however, be very interesting for countries with vast areas lacking infrastructure like Russia, China or Australia," he added. Flying cars will most likely take off among pilots licensed for ultra-light aircraft, says Ciba. "It would make their lives so much easier -- they would be able to park their car/aircraft at home, drive to the airport, take off, land and drive to their destination without switching vehicles," he muses. 10. Based on Volvo's safety record, it is no surprise its latest offering, the XC90 SUV excelled in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (the IIHS) crash tests. The Institute reports the XC90 got 'stellar ratings for crash protection and for its standard front crash prevention system.' It also got itself the maximum six points for having had its crash culling tech rated as 'superior.' No intrusion larger than two inches was recorded anywhere in the driver's space. The Institute added that it was most impressed with it in the most difficult test of all, the small overlap crash, where you can see in the video below. The XC90 simply pushes itself off the barrier instead of letting the car absorb the impact. In doing so, the IIHS has awarded the car its highest Top Safety Pick+ distinction. https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=28&v=Rf7t_D0CSgg
  11. Nice one! East London resident Martin Le-May captured this incredible photo of a baby weasel on the back of a green woodpecker in Essex, England, on Monday. Martin Le-May As much as we’d all like to believe this is a wondrous tale of friendship wherein two mates go on an epic adventure featuring a baby weasel and his magnificent flying steed, sadly it’s NOT. It’s a photo of a weasel trying to kill a woodpecker. Le-May spoke to BuzzFeed News about capturing the moment he described as “the struggle for life.” Le-May, a hobby photographer, was taking a walk with his wife through the Hornchurch Country Park in East London in the hopes of her seeing a green woodpecker for the first time. In an email to BuzzFeed News, he described what we’re calling “The Thrilling Tale of the Woodpecker and the Weasel”: “As we walked we heard a distressed squawking and I saw that flash of green. So hurriedly I pointed out to Ann the bird and it settled into the grass behind a couple of small silver birch trees. Both of us trained our binoculars and it occurred that the woodpecker was unnaturally hopping about like it was treading on a hot surface. Lots of wing flapping showing that gloriously yellow/white colour interspersed with the flash of red head feathers. Just after I switched from my binoculars to my camera the bird flew across us and slightly in our direction; suddenly it was obvious it had a small mammal on its back and this was a struggle for life. The woodpecker landed in front of us and I feared the worst. I guess though our presence, maybe 25 meters away, momentarily distracted the weasel. The woodpecker seized the opportunity and flew up and away into some bushes away to our left. Quickly the bird gathered its self respect and flew up into the trees and away from our sight. The woodpecker left with its life. The weasel just disappeared into the long grass, hungry.” Today, it's a meme!! kekeke

  15. Recently, the term 'material changes' has been used frequently in the war of words between political parties in Singapore. In this blog post, 'material changes' is taken quite literally as Rolls-Royce offers a choice of three new materials for the flying lady hood ornament. The flying lady - also known as the Spirit of Ecstasy - was designed by English sculptor Charles Robinson Sykes (1875 - 1950). According to wikipedia, the story behind it is apparently a secret love between John Walter Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu, (second Lord Montagu of Beaulieu and editor of The Car Illustrated magazine from 1902) and his secretary and model for the emblem - Eleanor Velasco Thornton. The most interesting choice among the three choices is the illuminated polycarbonate flying lady. It looks identical to the one seen on the 101EX-concept, a prototype that was presented at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show. The other two choices are the gold-plated flying lady and a solid sterling silver version. Polycarbonate is a durable material with high impact-resistance and low scratch-resistance. Hence, a hard coating is applied to polycarbonate exterior automotive components. Unlike most thermoplastics, polycarbonate can undergo large plastic deformations without cracking or breaking. If a buyer does not see the need to cough out extra money for these special ornaments, they can always stick to the original stainless steel version.
  16. Hyundai has shown us the latest Sonata a while back. While the changes on the skin aren't revolutionary by any standard, the new car's safety rating has been upped a notch. Just recently, the 2015 Sonata has been awarded the Top Safety Pick+ award by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The fact that Hyundai cars weren't best known for their safety and the previous Sonata only managed a 'marginal' rating makes the award even more notable. 19. Really unbelievable that some air forces are still flying this dubbed "Flying Coffin" due to its extremely high accident rate records Guess this Russky-built 60s-era fighter, NATO codenamed Fishbed, still got its fans not out of fancy but out of necessity... From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp...1209074/1/.html Syrian fighter pilot defects in new blow to Assad Posted: 21 June 2012 1950 hrs DAMASCUS: A Syrian pilot was granted political asylum after landing his MiG fighter jet in neighbouring Jordan on Thursday, in the first such defection of a revolt a watchdog says has killed more than 15,000 people. "The council of ministers has decided to grant the pilot, Colonel Hassan Merei al-Hamade, political asylum," Jordanian Information Minister Samih Maaytah told AFP after a government official said the Russian MiG-21 had made an emergency landing at a base in Mafraq near the border. Syria's state television said the warplane was flying near the border when contact was lost at 0734 GMT, and Jordan said it crossed the frontier minutes later. The opposition Syrian National Council said: "The plane took off at high speed and flew at low altitude from a military base between Daraa and Sweida in the south of the country... to avoid detection by radar." "The pilot is from Deir Ezzor (in eastern Syria) and his family is known for its opposition" to President Bashar al-Assad's regime, spokesman George Sabra added. Tens of thousands of soldiers have defected from Syria's armed forces since the revolt against Assad's rule erupted in March last year, thousands of them joining the rebel Free Syrian Army, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. More than 120,000 Syrians fleeing the violence in their homeland have taken refuge in Jordan, according to the Amman government. The United Nations has registered 20,000 of them. Diplomats, meanwhile, stepped up efforts to stem the bloodshed, with Arab states demanding that Russia stop supplying arms to Syria and the United States and Britain reportedly working on a transition plan. "Any assistance to violence must be ceased because when you supply military equipment, you help kill people. This must stop," Arab League deputy chief Ahmed Ben Hilli told the Interfax news agency. Ben Hilli also called for the mandate of United Nations and Arab League envoy Kofi Annan to be revamped, and for Iran's inclusion in talks on ending the conflict. "To make (the Annan) plan work, we need to find a new mechanism and the mandate of the special envoy must be reassessed, so we can be sure that all the sides are observing the plan," he said without elaborating. UN chief Ban Ki-moon discussed the situation in Syria with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Thursday on the sidelines of an international conference in Rio de Janeiro, a spokesman said. The diplomatic flurry came as British newspaper The Guardian reported that Washington and London were working on an initiative for regime change in Damascus based on Annan's UN-backed plan that calls for a "Syrian-led political transition." But Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said any peace plan for Syria that calls for Assad to leave power and go into exile would not work because he would not quit. "A scheme according to which President Assad should leave somewhere before something happens in terms of a cessation of violence and a political process, this scheme simply does not work from the very start," Lavrov said. "It is infeasible because he will not leave." Lavrov, whose country remains in close contact with Assad's government, indicated that the Syrian leader was not ready to negotiate his removal from power because he was convinced he still enjoyed popular support. "I do not think Assad will be sitting down at the negotiating table," said Lavrov, pointing to the results of a widely criticised May 7 parliamentary election which he said showed a majority still backed the Syrian leader. Robert Ford, the US ambassador to Syria, called on Syria's military, from foot soldiers to senior officers, to reconsider their support for Assad, warning those committing atrocities will be hunted down and prosecuted. The US and the international community "will work with the Syrian people to locate the military members responsible for this violence and hold them accountable. And we will support the future Syrian government's efforts to bring those people to justice," Ford said in a message on his Facebook page. In the latest bloodshed, at least 93 people were killed in violence across Syria on Thursday, among them 52 civilians, 38 soldiers, and three rebels, the Syrian Observatory said. At least 13 civilians were killed in the flashpoint central city of Homs and another two unidentified people died in nearby Qusayr, the Observatory's Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP. Streaming video from Homs on the bambuser.com website showed smoke billowing from a residential district as the staccato of automatic gunfire was punctuated by the thud of mortar blasts. The bombardment aborted an attempt by the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Syrian Red Crescent on Thursday morning to evacuate trapped civilians, but the agencies vowed to try again later. "Unfortunately the team had to turn and come back due to shooting," ICRC spokesman Hicham Hassan said. "We are going to try to enter the old city once again this afternoon." Hundreds of people are believed to be trapped in the historic heart of Syria's third largest city and are unable to flee or find shelter because of the fighting, the Geneva-based agency said. According to a new toll it gave on Thursday, the Observatory said at least 10,480 civilians, 3,715 soldiers and 830 army defectors have been killed since March last year. - AFP/ms/de

From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...he_got_hit.html Posted on 03 Jun 2012 'Heroic' Chinese bus driver saves his passengers after he got hit by flying debris A Chinese bus driver who died after protecting his passengers from any harm while on the expressway has been hailed as a hero by netizens, including STOMPer Ai Zhu Guo. 46-year-old Wu Bin was driving the bus on the expressway last Tuesday (May 28) when a piece of flying debris broke the windscreen and pierced through his body. Despite being in pain, the Hangzhou native was able to bring the bus to a halt on the side of the expressway before he attempted to tend to his injuries. Unfortunately, Wu succumbed to his injuries in the hospital four days later. STOMPer Ai Zhu Guo wrote in, hoping to showcase a side of Chinese citizens not commonly seen around here: "I hope to share with STOMPers a recent news of how a bus driver stopped the bus he was driving to save his passengers despite being seriously hurt by a flying piece of metal sheet/rod. "Sadly, the heroic bus driver passed away in the hospital. "I hope this will show that there are good people in China too."

  23. PAL-V flying car makes debut flight From a distance it looks like a vehicle built for the road, albeit a slightly unusual one. But on a straight stretch of tarmac or grass this machine transforms, giving it the ability to take to the skies. The PAL-V took its maiden flight in March, and is certified for the air as well as the road. It needs only 165 metres to take off and, depending on weight, can fly for up to 500 kilometres, or 315 miles.
