  1. Choosing the best hot hatch is not tough now as there are many choices around. So with Volkswagen's recent facelift for the Golf R, how does it do? Shot by Autocar, the team takes the new Golf R and puts it in a group test with the Mercedes-AMG A45. There is no doubt the AMG is the faster car with an advantage of more than 60bhp, but does faster equates to a better car? Watch the video and find out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7rJ-XaEbLE
  2. For those automotive enthusiasts who are into the sport of golf, this piece of news is for you. Ferrari has teamed up with Cobra Puma Golf to add the iconic prancing horse on a line of golfing equipment. This long-term partnership between Cobra Puma Golf and Ferrari SpA is bringing a new type of product to the industry that is both beautiful and technically advanced, truly merging both art and science. The Ferrari Golf Collection was developed through a collaboration with Cobra Puma Golf and Ferrari SpA. It brings the most innovative technologies from Cobra Puma Golf engineers and Ferrari aerodynamic engineers together with premium materials, packaging and unquestionable style. "We saw an opportunity in the current marketplace to bring the Ferrari Golf Collection to life," commented Bob Philion, President of Cobra Puma Golf. "It's a high end collection the golf industry has never seen before; bringing together the best of Cobra Puma Golf enriched with the expertise of Ferrari in a superior product offering of equipment, apparel, accessories and footwear. We are thrilled to be working with Ferrari SpA on this long-term collection to bring a new, premium golf product line up to consumers." The culmination of the Ferrari Golf Collection lies in the Cobra Ferrari Driver, a true work of art designed and developed by Cobra Puma Golf equipment engineers with Ferrari SpA aerodynamics engineers. The result is a super premium, aerodynamic, multi-material design that delivers fast club head speed and exceptional distance. After studying the Cobra ZL Encore Driver, Ferrari aerodynamics engineers suggested shape changes that would reduce drag coefficient, making the club swing easily through the air and resulting in more club head speed. These changes included new radii along the face perimeter, smoothing of the bottom sole surfaces and raising the trailing edge of the driver higher off the ground (to delay separation). These new designs along with multi-material construction reduce drag, increase club head speed and maximize distance. The attention to detail, performance and style did not end with the driver. The Ferrari Golf Collection apparel, footwear and accessories fuse form, function and fashion in a collection of impeccable design. The accessory range features premium visors, belts, gloves, umbrellas and bags. A selection of the accessories, such as the Ferrari Golf Luxury Bag and Ferrari Golf Luxury Duffel, are crafted in Poltrana Frau Leather, the same leather used in Ferrari GT Cars. For this season, the Ferrari Golf Collection apparel features polos, knits, jackets and pants. The Ferrari Golf Tech Polo uses state of the art fabrics and technology such as Coolmax All Season, UPF 50+ and moisture wicking for a shirt that keeps you comfortable and stylish in any weather. The Ferrari On Course Jacket has a striking style with contrast red stitching on black fabric, this design was based off of the interior of a Ferrari car. The jacket is also breathable, wind resistant and water resistant for extreme comfort throughout course of play. The Ferrari Golf Leather Shoe is handcrafted in Italy with genuine full grain leather upper and sole. Available in white or black, the shoe is the epitome of fashion and technology. Utilizing Puma's S2Quill technology, the shoe provides superior traction, stability and support while on course. The delicate stitching in the shoe is designed after the interior of a Ferrari car and the sleek silhouette is an understated, luxury look that will have heads turning all over the golf course. The collection can be found in select golf retailers, select Ferrari Stores and select high end retailers starting in July, 2012. Photo credit: Motor Authority

    Golf Variant

Hi all Just wondering, anyone here has tried or are considering to buy or bought/owned the Golf Variant? Any feedback and owner's/personal reviews on it? Realised that Estates/Station Wagons are not amongst the favourite for potential car buyers - thought its a great alternative to consider especially if VAG could be more relax/generous in their offers for this model. Cheers!
  4. With the facelifted 2017 Volkswagen Golf about to be revealed in less than a day, a number of images of the new model have leaked online, showing us how the car has been refreshed. Thanks to Quattroruote magazine, these low resolution photos show not much of a change in terms of exterior styling. The biggest change is likely its headlights/taillights and a new sharper front bumper for the Golf. Also shown here are those of the facelifted Golf GTI. Again, the exterior changes appear minimal, with the lights and bumpers receiving a new design. Inside, the dashboard gets a much cooler and cleaner-looking infotainment screen and is said to feature gesture control. Higher end variants will also receive the Active Info Display that is present in its larger siblings like the Passat.
  5. Volkswagen is said to be on the verge of launching its even more hardcore Golf GTI Clubsport S variant. It is expected to be faster than the Golf R with an estimated power output of more than 300bhp. Born to be on the track, the hottest front-wheel drive version of the Golf GTI will debut at this year’s Wörthersee Meet in May, which will also mark the 40th birthday of VW’s iconic hot hatch. Besides the uprated power and track-focused suspension tuning, Volkswagen has also been hard at work removing unwanted mass from the car. It is rumored to have its rear seats and sound deadening materials deleted. All these weight savings should allow the Clubsport S to shave another 30-50kg off the Clubsport's 1,375kg kerbweight. The new Megane RS Trophy R competitor is said to be limited to a run of 5,000 units and will be priced more than the Golf R.
  6. The Volkswagen Golf GTI concept called the Golf GTI Excessive has been displayed at the annual Worthersee Show in Austria recently. The Worthersee Show started out as a gathering for Golf enthusiasts has now become an international gathering for Volkswagen and to a certain extent other cars within the Volkswagen-Audi Group. As such, this latest concept GTI follows a Volkswagen tradition of unveiling concept cars at this event. The Excessive is a concept Golf GTI intended to showcase the latest prototype range of accessories for the iconic hot hatch. It showcases a bodykit for aerodynamic and visual 'upgrades' and some mechanical modifications too. The add-ons claim to make the stock GTI into a more focused driver's car. And should they get a favourable response, Volkswagen will incorporate the new items into the latest list of accessories that a Golf GTI owner can buy for his or her car. The Excessive now has a lower front splitter, new look left and right air intakes that protrude further out, a new rear diffuser, titanium exhaust tips and arches. All purportedly make the Golf GTI slightly more aerodynamic than the stock version. Oh, those arches are not filled out very large 19inch BBS rims and tires, which should increase grip over the standard 17inch rims and tires setup. New spring and dampers round the handling package up. The earlier stated titanium exhaust tips aren't just hiding a stock system. The tips are part of a lightened sports exhaust system which somewhat add about 3ps to the 210ps that the stock Golf GTI makes. There are no other engine mods for this concept Golf. There are new sports seats added to this Golf Excessive, and some trimming. But nothing really out of the ordinary when it comes to the interior. Having driven a standard Mark 6 GTI recently I have to say that the modifications done by Volkswagen towards making the Golf GTI into a more focused car seems to be getting the car to handle the power, especially the torque the 2.0turbocharged engine produces. In the standard DSG equipped car the 280Nm of torque it produces does overwhelm the standard 17inch tires causing lots of wheelspin if you simply boot it out of a low speed tight corner or a junction. You have to be feed in the power to be smooth if not the traction control warning light simply flickers away as you brutally stomp on the throttle and power on out through a junction. More so in the wet. It however gives straight line thrills especially when flooring it at the traffic lights. The rest of the stock GTI is a very good piece of kit. It is stable at high speeds and directional changes and makes driving fast feel safe and confident when attacking corners. since as I stated it does overwhelm the front wheels. A front wheel drive with a lot of power does this. It is thrilling but pretty inefficient in laying down the power unless you feed it in gradually as stated above. I think that Volkswagen agrees with this fact as the more powerful and more torquey Golf R is all wheel drive. So, 19 inches rims and tires and the upgraded suspension would make the GTI able to reel in the turbocharged torque even better. It may make the GTI less thrilling with less wheelspin, but its a good thing when you're attacking tight corners than require you to be in the lower gears. These manufacturer upgrade items are the things that I'll be looking for if ever Volkswagen includes it in a package for the GTI. And I'd add that body kit too as the GTI is too subtle for me. Personally that is.
  7. Autocar has revealed that Volkswagen might be looking at adding an even more hardcore version of its spiced-up Golf GTI Clubsport to its range. Yet to arrive on our shores, the Golf GTi Clubsport is a more serious machine as compared to the normal Golf GTi with 286bhp produced from its 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine. Other than the jump in power, it also has its aerodynamics and handling fine-tuned for track use too. However, it seems like an even more powerful version of the Clubsport could appear and it is said to have around 300bhp. Catered even more for the track warriors, weight will be shed too with rear seats and sound deadening materials all removed. While the car has not been given the green light for production, expect it to rival similarly hardcore hot hatches such as the Renault Megane 275 R.S. Trophy R.
  8. EVO, a British-based publication, has given its verdict on the new Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport. With 261bhp on tap and an overboost function that increases the power to 287bhp for up to 10 seconds in third gear onwards, the Clubsport is the fastest Golf GTI ever. Highlights of the differences between a normal GTI and the Clubsport variant include a new front bumper design and a nice little ducktail-like spoiler that help remove lift when travelling at some speed. Revised suspension setting and optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres make sure the Clubsport feels more at home on the track than before. On the topic of track work, is the Clubsport better than its more powerful sibling, the Golf R? Watch the video and find out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Wfr6Ge_XHE
  9. For those who are looking for a 300bhp or more hot hatch and wants it to be all-wheel drive, the Volkswagen Golf R and the Audi RS3 are the best both company currently have now. EVO UK brought both of them out together to see which is the better car on track. While we thought the RS3 should be pitted against Mercedes AMG A45 since they share a more similar power output (the Benz has 381bhp), the end result is for between the Golf R (296bhp) and the RS3 (362bhp) is actually pretty close. Watch the video and see whether the RS3's 60bhp advantage over the Golf can give it the win on track. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3jWVTKYcP0
  10. Anyone going? http://www.golfgti.com.sg/registration/vde
  11. Is this VW's answer to Merc AMG A45? http://www.worldcarfans.com/114042173778/volkswagen-golf-r-400-concept-going-into-production---report Volkswagen's head of research and development has reportedly confirmed plans to build a production version of the Golf R 400 concept. There's no word on when the car will be launched but Car & Driver says the news comes directly from Heinz-Jakob Neusser. As refresher, the Golf R 400 has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that has been tuned to produce 400 PS (294 kW) and 450 Nm(332 lb-ft) of torque - an increase of 100 PS (73 kW) and 70 Nm (51 lb-ft). It is connected to a six-speed DSG transmission and a 4MOTION all-wheel drive which enables the 1,420 kg (3,130 lb) hatchback to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 3.9 seconds, before hitting an electronically-limited top speed of 174 mph (280 km/h).
  12. Volkswagen has released the photos of the 2013 Golf Variant prior to its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show which will open its door in a few days' time. The Golf Variant is essentially an estate version of the popular Golf hatchback. The most practical version of the Golf will be launched alongside with the Golf GTI, GTD, e-Golf and the plug-in hybrid. Engine lineup is expected to be similar to the hatchback, which means 1.2-litre with 85bhp or 105bhp and 1.4-litre with 122bhp or 140bhp for the petrol options. Diesel choices include the 1.6-litre with 104bhp and 2.0-litre with 148bhp. Depending on which part of the world you are residing, the Golf Variant may also be called Golf Wagon, Golf Estate or Jetta SportWagen.
  13. Mention fast wagons and usually you will hear people talk about Audis and Volvos. But things may change with the creation of this Golf Variant Youngster 5000 study. While this car is only a product thought out by a group of six youngsters from VW's Zwickau plant, the changes done to this Golf Variant are not over the top. Which also means we could see a Golf R Variant soon? Anyway, highlights of this spruced up Variant include the bright Arancio argos pearl front and rear bumpers from the Golf R and new black wheels. Power comes from the Golf GTI's 2.0-litre engine which has been fettled by them to give 315bhp. A Bilstein suspension that allows the driver to control different settings from an iPhone has been added into the car to keep body control in check when things get hot. Wondering how the car got its name? A iPad-controlled sound system with an output of about 5000 Watts resides in the rear of the car.
  14. We recently tested the new Volkswagen Golf R and think that it is a well rounded ultmate hot hatch. But I guess there must be quite a few people out there that think that 280bhp is not enough, since Volkswagen is going to come up with a even hotter Golf in the future. Meanwhile, to satisfy those that want more power, they could get Oettinger to breathe some magic into their Golf R. So what do they have for you? How about 394bhp, 498Nm of torque, 0-100km/h in less than four seconds and a top speed of more than 280km/h sound? Pretty impressive in our opinion! For comparison sake, that is a whopping 114bhp more than the what came from the factory and this is the same power output of a current Subaru Impreza 1.6! Torque is almost twice of what a Golf Sport produces too. In order to get such impressive numbers, Oettinger replaced the original turbocharger with a bigger one plus a new exhaust system and of course a remapped ECU. An optional high-performance brake system is also available to make sure it is able to rein in all that newfound pace. Aesthetically, Oettinger has given the Golf R a new front spoiler, new side skirts, a tailgate mounted spoiler and some new 19 and 20-inch wheels.
  15. While you're driving on the road, one rule of thumb that you'll always have to keep in mind is to be careful, real careful. You have to watch out not only for vehicles to avoid a crash, but you'll also have to beware of drivers who may go mad at you, even if you think you've done not even a single thing that's wrong. I believe you don't want to experience what this motorcycle rider did. Unfortunately enough for the motorcycle rider, he got slapped in the middle of the road by a guy driving a Volkswagen Golf. Honestly, this Golf driver is kind of stupid, I would say, thinking that the motorcycle rider was trying to race him. He claimed that the rider was riding aggressively while in fact it was the VW Golf driver himself who was an aggressive driver and the public could see it as well. Based on what we can see in the video, in addition to the statement from the motorcycle rider which seemed true, we tend to believe that the Golf driver was entirely wrong. Besides, had the motorcycle rider tried to race him, he would have gone past the VW Golf way ahead, keeping in mind how motorcycles can easily slip through traffic whereas cars can't. In addition to that, most of today's motorcycles have really fast acceleration. Just try to recall for yourself, how often have you seen motorcycles going past cars so easily? I believe it happens nearly all the time. However, the response of the motorcycle rider is somewhat cool, I should say. Instead of fighting back, he chose to report the aggressive driver to the local police department. All that's left to do now is to wait for police investigation to complete and it should not take long as the Golf driver had already been identified. According to the rider, one little slap was no big deal, but had the Golf driver hit him the second time, he would have taken his revenge and things would have gone out of hand. Furthermore, the motorcycle rider was putting on a full face helmet, carbon gloves, and protective gear. With that being said, you should be able to imagine how bad things could have gone for the stupid guy in the VW Golf. Well, two thumbs up for you, motorcycle rider!
  16. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_7seqs8US8A South Korean man took out his frustrations on his top-of-the-range Mercedes-Benz S-Class after getting fed up with what he saw as terrible customer service and after sales service from a local car dealership. Yu Je-Ha said that he had bought the Mercedes-Benz S-Class S63 AMG in March this year for around US$500,000 (S$700,000). Months later, it started having engine problems but it was not fixed. So he took his protest to the dealership by thrashing the German luxury sedan with a golf club. According to local police, the Mercedes Benz dealership filed a complaint against the angry customer the following day for obstruction of work but the charge was later dropped.
  17. After winning this year's European Car of the Year and World Car of the Year awards, the Volkswagen Golf has picked up its third - the annual Car of the Year Japan award. The Volkswagen Golf achieved a first in the 34-year history of the Car of the Year Japan awards by winning the coveted title in a ceremony held in conjunction with the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. No foreign car has won the award, till now. In a contest that was expected to see the Golf trade blows with the Honda Fit/Jazz for honours, the Golf polled strongly from the outset and ended up amassing a commanding 504 out of a possible 600 points from the 60 jurors in attendance. The Fit/Jazz came in second with 373 votes while the Volvo V40 followed with 167 votes. "This is a very special award for us in so many ways. Firstly, our Golf 7 has become the first ever imported car to win Japan's COTY award, and we achieved this in our 60th year since Volkswagen imports started into Japan," commented Shigeru Shoji, President of Volkswagen Japan. Explaining its decision, the jury highlighted in particular the new Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) as a core strength of the Golf. The MQB formed the basis for precise handling with simultaneously high levels of ride comfort and driving pleasure, the jurors said. Further features to earn praise included the excellent standard of safety, the clear and clean design, the high-quality interior and exterior finish and the highly modern TSI engines. In three new minor awards that were introduced this year, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV picked up the 'Innovation Award', the Mazda6 won the 'Emotional Award' and the jointly developed Suzuki Spacia and Mazda Flair Wagon captured the 'Small Mobility Award'. The 'Special Achievement Award' went to the Daihatsu Move for its front seat lift design, technology created to assist senior citizens and people with disabilities.
  18. Want to give your Volkswagen Mk6 Golf GTi the 'Rocket Bunny' or 'Liberty Walk' flared wheel arches look that has been trending around the world? Germany’s Ingo Noak Tuning can help you out. While the final product is not ready for sale yet, the photos here are pretty much what you will get when it is ready for production. According to the tuner, all they have left is to add the finishing touches. In our eyes, it makes to car look a little bit over the top. But then again, we might be the minority. For those who want one, it costs around S$1,600.
  19. And while journalism takes an ugly turn due to the mess concocted by the henchmen within the Rupert Murdoch media empire and while Lady Gaga still entertains us not with her songs but by her lack of clothing during her public appearances, Autocar UK has reported that the upcoming Mk7 Volkswagen Golf will look sportier than ever. This is very good news to me as I have always thought that the last few generations of everyone's favourite German hatchback looked extremely porky and minivan-like. This is especially true with the Mk5 Golf (pictured below). Park it beside its cousins the Audi A3, the Skoda Octavia or even the supposedly larger B7 Audi A4 sedan and you'd notice that the Golf Mk5 was at least 3 inches taller than all of the cars mentioned above. I know the Golf was meant to be a practical hatchback, but somehow being so much taller than even the bigger Audi A4 is a bit too much. Then when you add the fact that the overall styling of the Golf is pretty subdued, slabsided and understated without any overt aggression or signs of sportiness the minivan argument somehow makes some sense. Even in the GTI form it looked more like a bubbly loaf of bread than a hot hatch. Of course some may like the fact that the GTI only had red trimmings around the grille for some sign of power but I actually like my hot hatches fiery. The Mk6 was about an inch lower and with that wider, more defined split grille up front it looked wider and therefore lower. Ergo, the car looks sleeker. However I believe that sources within Volkswagen had told the people at Autocar that the company intends to give the Mk7 Golf a wider stance, a lower roofline with a nicely raked windscreen as well as a lower, more sportier driving position. The new MK7 Golf is scheduled for 2012 and will also have distinct models - the three door will be sportier than the five door and the five door hatch will look totally distinct from the taller Golf Plus mini MPV (now this makes more sense as the current Golf hatch does not really differ from the Golf Plus), much like the current Vauxhall/Opel Astra range where the three and five door models are pretty distinct from one another. This little bit of news makes me feel that there is still hope that Volkswagen intends to go back to the days of the Mk1 and Mk2 Golf (pictured below). The Golf in those days were proper hatchbacks
  20. After the Passat CC, VW is reportedly to be preparing the Golf CC for a 2015 launch. Like the Passat CC, the Golf CC will adopt a 'four-door coupe' styling. The newcomer is designed to take on the forthcoming Mercedes CLA. The Golf CC will be built upon the MQB platform that underpins the Golf. It will get a marginally longer version that will also underpin the Golf Estate and the upcoming Audi A3 saloon. The Golf CC will be fitted with a wide-opening hatchback tailgate to help improve access, similar to the Audi A5 Sportback. The boot capacity will be larger than the Golf but smaller than the current Jetta's. At launch, engine options will include a turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol with 120bhp and a 2.0-litre TDI with 150bhp. A hot GTI version will follow to challenge the CLA 45 AMG at a later date. The soon-to-be launched Audi A3 saloon, which is also under the VW stable, is often seen as a direct rival to the CLA. A multi-cornered fight is brewing slowly
  21. Touted as a greener alternative to the GTI and GTD, the Volkswagen Golf GTE was never expected to be the fast. But it seems like it is the fastest among its siblings. According to Automann-TV, they managed to clock the GTE's century sprint in 6.3 seconds which is much faster than what Volkswagen claims it can do (7.6 seconds). In fact, it is faster than both the GTI (6.5 seconds for our local 217bhp version) and GTD (7.5 seconds). Powered by a 150bhp 1.4TSI engine and paired with a 101bhp electric motor, the official output for the GTE is 204bhp and 350Nm of torque. Considering it is a couple of horses down and more than 100kg heavier than a GTI, we think Volkswagen might have under declared the GTE's real power output! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxRptqAOt7E
  22. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7uXG-QElms Volkswagen has released a new video for the production version of the Golf R Cabriolet ahead of its anticipated international launch in 2013. It looks identical to the concept model previewed 18 months ago at the 2011 Worthersee tuner show. Although the MK 7 Golf has already been launched, the 2013 Golf R Cabriolet is actually based on the MK 6 Golf. Well, perhaps VW has a unique way of production scheduling. The Golf R Cabriolet is equipped with an aggressive body kit that comes with large front air intakes, black grille with R badge, smoked headlights, twin centrally-mounted exhaust pipes and 19-inch Talladega alloy wheels. Propelling the AWD open-top model is the responsibility of the 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged lump with 270bhp and 350Nm of torque. It goes from standstill to 100km/h in 6 seconds and is the fastest and most powerful open-top vehicle in Volkswagen history. Want a quick hairdo from a German 'hairdresser'? The Golf R Cabriolet could be your choice.
  23. the used GTi on sale at sgcarmart are on the high side... $80k ++... isnt it more worth to get brand new ones?
  24. Went shopping for a car for my wife at VW today. My wife is keen on the VW golf since most of her friends are driving that and it is relatively fuss-free from what she heard from friends. Plus the compact size will allow her to have lesser parking problems in office. But my colleagues in office are telling me to avoid VW at all cost due to the long service centre queues and lousy customer service. Since the price of a A250 is relatively cheaper than a golf GTI, is it a better choice to get that instead since they look much the same as on paper and in metal.
