The new OM 654q diesel engine: lighter, more powerful, cleaner The transverse-mounted version of the latest premium diesel engine family makes its debut in the new B-Class. Despite its lower displacement - just under two litres - the around 16 percent lighter new diesel engine with 140 kW (190 hp) puts out 10 kW more than the previous engine. On the inside, the OM 654q offers efficiency-enhancing technological highlights such as steel pistons with stepped bowls in an aluminium block. The cylinder liners are coated using the further-improved NANOSLIDE® process. With a cylinder spacing of just 90 mm instead of 94 mm, the new engine is more compact than its predecessor while allowing the exhaust aftertreatment components to be installed directly on the engine, where the exhaust temperature is higher, making for more efficient aftertreatment. Thanks to further improved exhaust aftertreatment, the powerful four-cylinder from the modern OM 654 engine family already meets the Stage 2 RDE (Real Driving Emissions) standard coming into force from 2020, and is certified to Euro 6d. Even in demanding driving situations and under challenging environmental conditions, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class remains within all the emissions limits. This is achieved by additional selective catalytic reduction (SCR) with an ammonia slip catalyst (ASC) in the exhaust system of the B-Class. This allows a more generous dose of the reduction agent AdBlue, as any surpluses can be reduced and converted in the second SCR. These surpluses (amonia slip) particularly occur during fast temperature changes in the exhaust tract, e.g. when moving from city traffic to the motorway. Suspension: agile and comfortable At least as agile as its predecessor while even more comfortable - that was the development brief handed to the suspension specialists for the new B-Class. Depending on the version, several options are available for the basic configuration, including a lowered comfort suspension and a suspension with active adaptive damping, which lets the driver control the damper tuning while driving using DYNAMIC SELECT. The system uses an electronic valve, the control of which additionally analyses the driving state and optimises the damping rate individually for each wheel. In all versions of the new Mercedes-Benz B-Class, the front wheels feature McPherson struts and forged-aluminium wishbones, to which are attached cast-aluminium steering knuckles. This makes the unsprung mass as low as possible in the interests of road-holding and comfort. At the rear, the models with the entry-level engine variants come with a twist-beam rear axle in the basic configuration. In combination with the more powerful engine variants or if the customer opts for one of the optional suspension systems, use is made of a sophisticated four-link rear axle, which is made extensively of aluminium to reduce the unsprung mass. The three wishbones and one trailing arm on each of the rear wheels are mounted on a subframe, which is isolated from the bodyshell by rubber bushings to reduce the transfer of vibration and noise from suspension to body. Single-tube shock absorbers and separate coil springs are used for both the four-link and the twist-beam rear axle.

There goes a saying that “Real men drive with 3 pedals./Real men drive manual cars.”, and even though that’s not the case, most male (and female) drivers have certainly had that thought at the back of their mind when it comes to taking their license. According to the 2020 Annual Traffic Statistics, out of the 3 million citizens holding a Qualified Driving License (QDL), 1.7 million (56.9%) individuals have a Class 3 license while only 200 thousand (6.58%) individuals have a Class 3A license. While it was a no-brainer for me to take Class 3A for my driving license, my dad met my decision with a disapproving sigh before simply stating that having a Class 3 license is “simply the better option”. Most of my male (and female) relatives and friends were quick to comment on the convenience of having a manual license. “It’s better because you can drive both manual and automatic cars on the road,” my dad would often say, “and it makes you a better driver.”. Having a manual license isn't all that useful. . . Oddly enough, that sentence stuck with me throughout my teenage years – “Manual drivers are better drivers”. I wasn’t sure if I believed it wholeheartedly, to be honest. After all, my father (a manual driver) had also gotten his fair share of traffic accidents. Because of their incessant repetition of this traditional mindset, I opted to try for a manual license, only for me to realise that there isn’t a real need for me to learn how to drive with a clutch. . . . here's why: Most cars run on automatic transmission nowadays, and unless I’m intending to get a van or a sports car (that I can't afford), learning how to drive with three pedals was virtually useless. Mercedes-Benz is pushing hard towards electrification and its iconic G-Class is no exception. The vehicle you see here isn't the one you'll be able to buy in the future, but it's close. Mercedes calls this the Concept EQG – a near-production version of the forthcoming EQG and a vision of what an electrified G-Class will be like. It certainly looks like a G-Class, and purists will be happy to know it should be just as rugged. A ladder frame still underpins the boxy body, riding on independent suspension in front with a solid axle at the rear. The greenhouse sits tall, the bulky spare tire carrier holds station at the back, door handles are prominent on the sides, and round headlights illuminate the way forward. Even at the quickest of glances, there's no mistaking this for a G-Class. It's clearly a very different G-Class, however. Without an engine under the hood, the bold G-Class grille becomes an illuminated Black Panel Grille on the Concept EQG. Illuminated blue squares create a faux grille appearance, with the three-pointed star in the middle lit up in a 3D effect. A white border completes the grille facade, with more LED daytime lights circling the headlights. You'll find even more LED illumination on the sides, incorporated into the Concept EQG's protective strips. The flat roof incorporates an LED light bar at the front and a third brake light at the back. 22-inch wheels with a late-1990s ambiance sit at the corners, and while the Concept EQG does have a rear spare tire carrier, you probably notice it's not shaped like a tire. In reality, it's an external storage box that pays homage to the traditional G-Class in appearance, but trades the tire for items such as charging cables. Speaking of which, how does the Concept EQG put power to the ground? Mercedes isn't ready to share details like horsepower or range just yet, but we're told this concept uses four electric motors mounted close to the wheels. Each motor can operate independently to give the EQG "unique driving characteristics." The driveline also features a shiftable two-speed gearbox that basically gives you a crawler gear for tricky off-road situations. Being a near-production concept, there will be some changes before the EQG becomes official. There is no timeframe for when that will happen, but when it does, Mercedes pledges it will pass the same tests and conquer the same terrain as all the previous internal-combustion G-Wagens that came before.

Can't stretch to a Mercedes-Benz G-Class? Fret not, you can get a Suzuki Jimny and turn it into one with the help of DAMD's styling kit. Sold as a full bodykit set, it doesn't include any swapping out of the Jimny's little 1.5-litre petrol engine into something more potent. The kit is dubbed 'Little G' and will be ready in 2019. From the photos, we can see the whole kit includes new front grills, bumper headlights, wider fender flares, a new rear bumper, new spare wheel cover and a new bonnet. Daimler's Mercedes-Benz arm continues the development work of their first mid-sized pickup truck and our spies were there to catch them in the act. Just like the Renault Alaskan, Mercedes’ new pickup truck is based on the underpinnings of Nissan’s NP300 Navara and will reportedly enter the market under the GLT moniker, starting from 2017. The car you see in the photos is a test mule still carrying a lot of the Nissan’s body panels but we can clearly notice the wider front and rear wheel arches. Unlike other re-badged examples we’ve seen, the GLT is being developed and designed solely from Daimler to meet the specific needs of its customer base in Europe, Australia, South Africa and Latin America. The company gave us a good idea of how the final car will look like by releasing a teaser sketch image last year, along with the promise of high levels of utility combined with “the comfort, safety, and design of a Mercedes-Benz passenger car”. Mercedes still considers offering their new pickup in the US and if they do, the GLT will probably be made at Nissan’s factory in Mexico to avoid tarrifs. The company is also going to build it in Renault’s Argentinian facilities and at the Nissan plant in Spain for the regional markets respectively. Expect a range of four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, with entry-level models getting a six-speed manual and the rest a seven-speed automatic gearbox, with power sent to all four wheels permanently.
