  3. Cycle & Carriage, the authorised agent for Mercedes-Benz in Singapore, has riled parallel importers with a series of ads pointing out the shortcomings of parallel-imported Mercs, resulting in advertising authorities stepping in. According to local media reports, an ad by Cycle and Carriage read: "Cheaper Mercedes-Benz cars do come with standard accessories. Headaches, stress, sleepless nights, to name a few." The Automotive Importers and Exporters Association (AIEA), a trade body of about 75 parallel importers, has filed complaints with the authorities over the newspaper advertisements. AIEA's VP Lim Tze Yong was quoted complaining that the ads were "not justified" as they gave the impression that parallel-imported goods were counterfeited. The ASAS has since informed Cycle & Carriage that the ads had to be modified "in accordance with the Singapore Code of Advertising Practice" but has not received any acknowledgement from the firm. Since parallel importers appeared in the early 1990s to break Cycle & Carriage's 40-year monopoly on selling Mercedes-Benz, the rivalry between the two sides has been bitter. But barring an ad Cycle & Carriage took out in 1996 - saying it would not honour warranty cards of parallel imports - the publicly listed automotive group has largely adopted a 'live and let live' attitude. But industry watchers said the shrinking car market as well as rising competition from BMW might have prompted Cycle & Carriage to take a stronger stand now against parallel importers, which typically account for 8 per cent to 15 per cent of Mercedes sales here. Since the new E-Class launched in 2009, there has been a significant rise in parallel imported Mercedes-Benz all around the island, most of which were offered about 10% cheaper than the Authorised dealer. The rise in Merc parallel imports last year could also be due to the recession. One industry observer said there are still people who want to buy a luxury car during poor economic times but may not want to pay as much. 'So they go shopping for a parallel import,' he said. 'That is why a good proportion of the PI cars is made up of used luxury models less than three years old, imported from countries like Japan and the UK.'
  4. Heck, it is 2 more days to the weekend so why not on this famous question: WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD? Your answer?
  5. Hi guys, Can recommend tire shop that does cross rotation (remove tire from rims and swap to other side) and balancing at AMK Autopoint? Heard the charges is around $40 to remove from rim and cross rotate. Does this include the usual $15-$20 to just swap fore/aft and balance fore? Thanks!
  6. SINGAPORE NEWS SINGAPORE : With immediate effect, Pay TV providers which acquire exclusive broadcast rights to any programme, must cross-carry each other's content. This applies to any contract signed or renewed from March 12. It does not affect existing contracts. The fierce bidding over rights to broadcast the upcoming World Cup matches raised concerns over the issue of 'exclusive' rights, which has affected consumers in the Pay TV market. To lock out competitors, Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Lui Tuck Yew said on Friday said Pay TV operators are willing to fork out substantial amounts for exclusive rights. This has led consumers to cry foul, especially since they have to subscribe to both SingTel and StarHub - rivals in Singapore's PayTV market - for example, to catch their favourite football teams in action. This practice of holding on to exclusive content though is rare in international markets. Mr Lui said: "Content costs now constitute a significant percentage of pay TV operators' revenue, compared to international benchmarks. For example, SCV's content costs to revenue ratio has risen from 40 per cent prior to 2007 to close to 70 per cent today. This is much higher than the average 40 per cent for Pay TV operators in most other countries, including US, UK and Hong Kong. "Secondly, Singapore suffers from a high degree of content fragmentation compared to other countries. Out of 179 channels today, only seven channels are common to both SCV and SingTel. An international benchmarking exercise using a group of 16 popular channels showed that Singapore was the only country with exclusive arrangements for all 16 channels. "MDA's (Media Development Authority) review has concluded that this situation is unlikely to self-correct in the near future, and steps need to be taken to address this market failure". So under the new Media Market Conduct Code, there will be a Public Interest Obligation. This means Pay TV retailers must cross-carry each other's exclusive content. For example, if SingTel acquires a new channel exclusively, it must make this channel available to StarHub. StarHub must carry this programme at the same time SingTel is airing it - and vice versa. StarHub also cannot make any modifications to the content. This includes all the advertisements and branding SingTel may have embedded into the programme. And SingTel will have to pay StarHub to carry its exclusive content. It will be left to the telcos to work out a cost for this. For consumers, it means that they can watch an exclusive channel through just one Pay TV retailer. Consumers, regardless of which Pay TV service provider they belong to, will be charged the rate that has been stipulated by the original content provider. In the case of the example, whatever SingTel charges its customers for the exclusive content, StarHub customers will pay the same rate. Mr Lui elaborated: "Consumers would no longer require multiple set-top boxes or switch retailers each time the rights of exclusive content changes hands. This will facilitate greater consumer access to pay-TV content, and re-focus competition to other aspects, such as service differentiation and competitive packaging". For the industry, it means opening up the market to new players. The rights holder will be able to brand the exclusive content, market it and monetise it as it wishes. While the law takes immediate effect, the actually sharing of content is likely only to take place from September. For now, MDA will consult industry players, and sort out the details, like how consumers' bills will look like, and whether the review will affect new media platforms. As for how this will impact the broadcast of World Cup matches in Singapore, it is status quo for now, as SingTel and StarHub have submitted a joint bid and are waiting for FIFA's reply. Mr Lui said: "Let me just say that I am very happy that World Cup comes around only once every four years. We understand that SingTel and StarHub have recently made a new offer and negotiations with FIFA are still on-going. This is a commercial matter that is best left to the two pay-TV retailers and FIFA to settle. "I know time is running short; we are well into the second half, we are approaching injury time, but we remain hopeful that the negotiations will reach a sensible outcome." - CNA/ms Too bad, the actually sharing of content will only take place from September this year - After the World Cup.

  8. Dear guys and girls, I'm facing a cross road. My current job is taking up alot of my time and I have 2 very young children. I have been working for the past 9 years. When I was single / dating, time was not a factor to consider. I can work till cows come home. This job pays well but no time to enjoy with my family, friends and self. As usual, I got HDB loans and car loan to cover. No other liabilities. Salary is able to cover all loans, credit card expenses. I work about 16 hours a day. Play with my children only 1 hour. Talk with my wife for half hr. Some times, don't even talk cuz she will be watching tv while I work at home. By the time, I finished, she's asleep. I am thinking of changing another job but the pay is not gg to be as good as what I'm drawing. I have got job offers currently but hesitant for fear that the salary will not be able to afford my lifestyle. New salary should be able to cover present loans. Just that because of lower salary, got to tighten belt a little. But of course, lower paying job means lesser expectations and time spent on work too. What would you do? Time VS Money. I need your serious advice on this. Please poll.
  9. RH crosses the first hurdle with a group of young players as he left 10 seniors behind (World Cup players)........ This is the first time I heard of this players in Liverpool side : 1) David Amoo 2) Nathan Eccleston 3) Lauri Dalla Valle ESPN Latest: Rabotnicki Kometal 0 - 2 Liverpool David Ngog struck twice as Roy Hodgson began his reign as Liverpool manager with a comfortable victory from a potentially tricky Europa League test tonight. The Frenchman found the net in each half as an under-strength Liverpool side overcame FK Rabotnicki with little alarm in the first leg of their third qualifying round tie in Macedonia. With 17 days still to go before their Premier League opener, Liverpool were without 10 of their World Cup players but their blend of youth and experience coped well in a game of little drama. Hodgson's decision to leave behind the likes of Steven Gerrard and Joe Cole was fully vindicated. Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Alberto Aquilani, Lucas and Ngog were the established players to start, while new signing Milan Jovanovic was handed his debut alongside David Amoo, making his first senior appearance. Diego Cavalieri, Martin Kelly and Jay Spearing made up the team but it was a sign of the times that the side on show at the Philip II Stadium - an old arena halfway through an impressive rebuild - was still worth

  13. STOMPer Jerry saw this sign asking vehicles to slow down to zero kilometre per hour before the humps and thinks it is asking for the impossible. "I was going down a very gentle slope when I saw this sign and I find out that it is almost impossible to cross the hump at 0km/h even though I'm on a slope," the STOMPer said in an email today (17 Sept). The STOMPer said the sign is found on every floor of the building but would not reveal the name of the building or where it is located. http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/viewPost5486.aspx
  14. Saw the impact between a orange fit/jazz (driven by a lady as seen by my wife) and (if not wrong) a red ES model civic! The fit/jazz wanted to turn right to bedok reservior rd. The civic was going straight towards Temasek Poly, if correct, in relatively low speed. While i keep left and approaching the slip road to turn left to bedok reservior, i recall seeing the fit/jazz stop at cross junction. The red civic pass by my car and go straight towards temasek poly at cross junction. The fit start to move and in a split seconds, the fit rammed into the rear door of the civic!! Ouch...... the fit/jazz front was ripped off and radiator immediately leaking out the coolant water!!! After taking the left turn to bedok reservior road, a "KAYPO" Civic slow down his car immediately and want to take a glimpse of the impact. I wave at the civic driver to move forward to stop looking and "siam" the civic and continue my journey....... but later have to pass by that particular junction again!

Heard that a relative got fined because he crossed the stop line at a cross junction while waiting to turn right. The "Green Light" was ON but the "Green Arrow" was OFF. Pls advice. Thanks.
