  7. Business Times - 16 Jan 2008 Parallel importers register another boom year PI segment accounted for a whopping 20% of car sales in 2007 By SAMUEL EE LOWER list prices and a wider range of models continued to propel demand for the parallel imported car in 2007 to a new high - it accounted for an unprecedented one out of every five new cars sold in Singapore last year. A total of 22,304 parallel imports (PIs) were registered, according to the Land Transport Authority - a substantial 38 per cent increase over the previous year (see table). And the jump in market share becomes even more significant given that the total number of new cars last year came to 106,531 units - or an 8.8 per cent fall from the 116,849 cars in 2006. The top PI make again threw up no surprises - it remained the perennially popular Toyota. But what was a surprise was that grey imports of the traditional No 2 brand - Honda - more than doubled its volume over 12 months. Toyota PIs notched up 10,451 units - about the same as the year before. But Honda raced up to 9,010 units for a 120 per cent jump in sales. This was due to the popularity of one model - the Honda Stream compact MPV. In 2007, PIs collectively moved 4,062 of these in the first full year of sales (parallel importers first brought in the model in the last quarter of 2006). By contrast, authorised distributor Kah Motor only launched it in mid-2007 and sold just 1,220 units for the year. The white-hot demand for the Stream nudged the older Toyota Wish into the runner-up position. In 2007, the previous bestseller only managed 2,807 units - significantly down from the whopping 6,628 in the previous year. Another brand that experienced an increase in PI sales was Suzuki. The small Japanese brand was also ranked No 3 in 2006 but it was its 150 per cent jump to 1,658 units in 2007 which has to be the most interesting aspect of its performance. The combined total of 16,137 grey imports in 2006 was already a record for the industry, which looked like it was on the verge of collapse just a few years ago. Back in 2004, the PI trade registered only about 4,000 cars after the government acted on rampant under-declaration and other high jinks. This number was a big drop from the preceding year's estimated 7,500 units and was all the more striking given that the overall passenger car market was experiencing strong growth due to ever-increasing COE quotas. But in 2005, the PI scene engineered a sharp about-turn and sales of PI cars jumped back up to 6,282 units. It rose even higher in 2006 before culminating in the 2007 boom. Against the contraction in the total industry volume for passenger cars last year, the market share for the PI segment is now a whopping 20 per cent, or one in every five new cars sold in 2007. Compare this with 2006's 13.8 per cent, which roughly translates to one in seven cars. The surge in PI sales has, of course, come at the expense of the MTA or Motor Traders Association of Singapore, to which almost all the authorised vehicle distributors in the country belong. In 2007, the collective market share of MTA members fell to 77 per cent from the previous year's 84.5 per cent.

  9. Lancer is hottest car in Singapore It pips Toyota Corolla which had been the favourite for 5 years in a row By SAMUEL EE 2007 threw up a couple of surprises in the new car sales stakes but generally, the same old models ruled the same old segments among members of the Motor Traders Association of Singapore (MTA). The MTA is a grouping of authorised distributors and the biggest upset was recorded in the most popular model category. A close race ended with the title of Singapore's favourite car going not to the Toyota Corolla Altis this time, but to the Mitsubishi Lancer GLX. The GLX is an old, low-priced sedan that has since been replaced by the new ninth-generation EX but which continues to be sold as an entry-level alternative. Starting from just $52,700 currently, this made-in-Japan model reeled in 5,472 willing buyers in 2007 (see table), just 55 units more than the made-in-Thailand Toyota. The 1.6-litre Lancer was also helped by the fact that a new version of the Toyota Corolla Altis will be launched only in early March. As a result, the outgoing ninth-generation Corolla - which was also the first to bear the Altis suffix - came a close second with sales of 5,417 units. Before 2007, the Toyota Corolla had been the perennial favourite. This model, with its rock-solid reputation for quality and fuel economy, was Singapore's No 1 car for five consecutive years. But even as the Lancer GLX won top honours, its 2007 volume was still lower than its 2006 volume of 6,639 units, which shows how much this 1.6-litre sedan segment, and MTA sales in general, have shrunk. It may not stay this way for long, however, because the new-generation Corolla Altis is expected to spark strong interest and revive this category of cars. The popular 1,600cc sedan segment also threw up another winner - the Honda Civic in No 3 position. Although it is more expensive than the first two models, it managed to chalk up total sales of 4,979 units last year. These include variants with 1.8 and 2.0-litre engines, as well as a petrol-electric hybrid and in souped-up Type R trim. By contrast, a previously popular made-in-Japan sedan, the Nissan Sunny, looks like it may fade into oblivion soon. This very old model, which costs from $54,000 upwards, eked out sales of 1,723 units. In the mid-sized sedan segment, the Toyota Camry still held sway with a strong 3,366 units. Last year was the first full year of sales for this handsome new model and it pipped its traditional rival, the Nissan Cefiro, which saw sales of 712 units, by a wide margin. The Honda CR-V was Singapore's most popular sport-utility vehicle. It notched up sales of 1,032 units in 2007, beating competitors like the Toyota RAV4 (98 units) and the Toyota Fortuner (164). In fact, the stylish Nissan Murano also managed to overtake the two Toyota SUVs with 389 units even though it is a more expensive model. In the hatchback market, a relatively expensive Japanese model continued to rise to the top despite being due for replacement. The Honda Jazz racked up sales of 2,767 units - a credible number for an ageing model. Another Japanese hatchback that turned in decent numbers was the Suzuki Swift, with total sales of 1,104 units in its 1.3, 1.5 and 1.6-litre guises. The multi-purpose vehicle segment can be split into the compact MPV and the mid-sized MPV models. But both categories were dominated by Honda. Sales of the Honda Stream compact MPV came to 1,220 units. On the other hand, the ever-popular but rapidly ageing Toyota Picnic managed only 949 units. High fuel prices meant that the mid-sized MPV segment saw a big drop in numbers for models with engines of over 2.0 litres. The Honda Odyssey's 1,351 units may allow it to claim No 1 status but that figure is still 15 per cent lower than the previous year's.
  10. Business Times - 09 Jan 2008 Honda, Mitsubishi make big gains THE Toyota juggernaut continued its reign as the market leader in 2007, but it was Honda and Mitsubishi which made the biggest impact. The latter two marques ended the year by advancing one position up the ranking among members of the Motor Traders Association of Singapore (MTA). Toyota - Japan's biggest carmaker and soon, the world's - accounted for total passenger car sales of 17,121 units last year, including luxury division Lexus. Toyota finished with 15,411 units while Lexus did 1,710 cars. The former was saddled with an ageing model line-up (although Toyota should come back with a bang this year with the new Corolla Altis), while Lexus volume was hurt by the absence of the ES series. The ES was a core Lexus model with a very strong following here before supply of the popular mid-sized saloon stopped in end-2006. It is currently produced only as a left-hand-drive car, and thus cannot be offered in the local market. Otherwise, Lexus sales could easily be 40 per cent higher. A highly competitive market, where main competitors like BMW and Mercedes-Benz had facelifts and a full model change in 2007, also hurt the Japanese luxury marque. Based on an estimated total of 82,094 car registrations by MTA members, the market share for Toyo-ta/Lexus was 21 per cent, which means one out of every five new cars bought was a Toyota or Lexus. This ratio has slipped from a year ago, though. Then, Singapore's No 1 marque accounted for one out of four new cars. But Honda and Mitsubishi had no such problems. Honda moved up one notch in the MTA rankings to become Singapore's second most popular marque with a record 12,205 units, displacing Nissan's 9,608 and relegating it to No 3 overall. This means that from 2006 to 2007, Honda and Nissan switched places in the MTA pecking order. Mitsubishi also had a good year with 8,169 units to take up the No 4 position among MTA members. The Japanese brand also did a switcheroo with Hyundai and its 5,389 units, advancing up one position, while the Korean carmaker retreated one position to No 5. However, Hyundai recorded a great year of taxi sales and if these cabs had been added, it would have revealed a final tally of 8,080 units. MTA's estimated total of 82,094 registrations in 2007 is a 16.8 per cent drop from the 98,729 registrations in 2006. This is due to two factors - the fall in the total number of new cars registered in Singapore, and the sharp rise in market share of parallel importers, or those who are not authorised dealers. A total of about 107,000 new cars were registered last year, compared with around 117,000 the previous year, or an 8.5 per cent reduction.
