  12. The 2010 World Cup will kick off tonight in Johannesburg and it is apt to recollect our memories of Goal 2010. In 1998 then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong, reminiscent of Kennedy's moon landing challenge in 1961, bravely set a target for the FAS to land 11 Singaporean men in the World Cup Finals before 2010 was out. As it turns out, the task was not easy, but far harder than landing a man on the moon and bringing him safely back. Perhaps the late late settlement of TV broadcasting rights was a conspiracy by someone high up to prevent Singaporeans from watching the World Cup and being reminded of the failed Goal 2010.
  13. I know all the World Cup stuff have been posted, just want to poll football fans general feeling about the screening of the World Cup 2010. For me, I will NOT pay such exorbitant fee to watch the WC. If I do, the next WC will probably cost more. Who's to blame? I blame the telcos, they inflated the BPL rights to broadcast so much that who wouldn't take notice and try to make something out of the WC.
  14. In 3-5 months from now I will be assigned in neighboring Asian country for 2 years. I am looking for Isuzu Dmax and Toyota Hilux for personal use and leisures. 4x4 is a must and good suspension and of course reliable. I don't want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere helpless ;)

  18. Will LTA cut COE quota again in July 2010? Saw some post talking about this. What is the basis or is this red herring? Does LTA normally reviews the COE Quota in July each year? What is the chance of this happening?
  19. Quoted from http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/S...ory_533788.html A FULL-TIME national serviceman, one of four victims of a series of knife attacks in Kallang on Sunday, lay bleeding by the Pan-Island Expressway for seven hours before he was spotted. Half his left hand, along with four fingers had been hacked off, and he had deep cuts to his neck, face and abdomen; a part of his scalp had been sliced open. But at least Mr Ang Jun Heng, 19, was alive. Of the remaining three victims of the still-unknown slasher or slashers, one is dead, and the other two, like Mr Ang, are in intensive care at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The police said yesterday that they had yet to make an arrest. They declined to comment when asked whether the attacks were the work of one person or several, nor would they confirm whether or not the attacks were related. All the police spokesman would say was that investigations were ongoing and no possibilities had been ruled out. The four victims appear not to have known each other. Aside from Mr Ang, the other three, including the dead man, are Indian nationals aged between 24 and 44. Here on work permits, they live and work in different places. I will be very careful when I am walking around town...

  22. NO WORLD CUP TELECASTS ON TV NEXT YEAR? --------------------------------------- SINGAPORE - Could Singaporean television viewers miss out on next year's Fifa World Cup in South Africa? The shocking possibility has been raised following an ominous announcement by SingTel and StarHub last night. The joint statement not only revealed that both telcos had submitted a joint bid for broadcast rights - and were not in a bidding war, as recent media reports had speculated - it also hinted that, even with their joint resources and their readiness to forego profit from the telecast, the telcos were unable to meet Fifa's terms. "The cost of the World Cup has escalated substantially," said the two telcos, whose offer was higher in value than StarHub's four years ago. "In an attempt to reach a value that is acceptable to Fifa to bring the World Cup to Singapore, the price offered to Fifa would sacrifice all World Cup margins for both SingTel and StarHub while keeping the price affordable for consumers. "However, we have yet to reach an agreement with Fifa." Asked if the bid had basically failed, SingTel and StarHub told MediaCorp it was "premature" to comment. Citing "confidential commercial terms", they added: "We will continue to negotiate with Fifa in an attempt to reach an agreement." Football's world governing body has reportedly already accepted offers from more than 200 countries. Industry sources described the amount Fifa is asking for as exorbitant. If the ruling body refuses to lower its terms, sports fans here face possibly two choices: Miss out on the World Cup on local television, or volunteer to pay a far higher price. During the 2006 Germany World Cup, fans here paid $26.25 to watch the matches on SCV. The two telcos have thus far kept mum on their joint bid despite recent public debate being premised on their bids being separate ones, and whether this competition would drive up prices for viewers. So, when did they decide to file a joint bid and was it at the urging of local media authorities? In response to MediaCorp's questions, the two telcos said the collaboration was agreed upon "some time ago, and was initiated jointly without influence from other parties". They had "mutually identified the specific circumstances of World Cup (i.e. the limited opportunity to deliver a differentiated service and viewing experience to World Cup viewers) and the opportunity they represent for sharing the broadcast rights". Fifa's projected television broadcast earnings for the 2010 tournament is some billion. This includes ESPN StarSports' US$40 million to beam the matches to the Indian sub-continent, and the US$100 million America's ESPN and ABC jointly paid for the World Cup next year and in 2014. As above, we may not get to view the live telecast of World Cup matches .
