  3. Anyone catching this Kaiju movie on Friday? I got hyped up by my friends on this. The new Godzilla is by far the largest compared to it's Japanese and 1998 US counterparts, towering over 120 meters. This round we get hints that it's battling a second "cloverfield-like" monster. The tone of this movie is also different from the light-hearted anime feel of "Pacific Rim" or it's campy 1998 incarniate and set in a darker and gritty tone. So far the previews have been pretty positive, while most reviewers commented on the good builtup, they complained that they can't get enough screentime of the King of Monsters himself! LOL! This will be the second time Hollywood is taking a shot on the iconic monster. The 1st US version in 1998 (shown in Ch5 yesterday evening) was a disaster for both the box office and for the Godzilla fans/franchise. The monster in the 1998 Godzilla resembles more like a giant T-Rex than the tail dragging walking monster that we all knew. Moreoever the monster is weak and easily killed by missiles and did not have laser breath. The campy storyline and plothole angered many fans who see it as a lame copy from "Jurrasic Park". The sh*t hits the fan when the movie reaches the scene were "baby Godzilla" overrun the threater. The suit actor of the japanese Godzilla was so angry by the movie that he walked out of the hollywood premiere half-way. "That's not Godzilla" he said. Even "Toho" the Japanese company that own the "Godzilla" rights announced that they rename the monster "Zilla" and removing the "God" from the monster. The 1998 monster was a running gag in many Japanese Godzilla movies. Not anymore! This movie set to make things Right this time. This new Godzilla will be the same tail-dragging monsters than we all know and love!

In total, a record 12,000 people took part in the three-day event, which took them past iconic landmarks such as the Sheares Bridge, Singapore Flyer and Marina Bay Sands. SINGAPORE: More than 10,000 cyclists came together on Sunday morning to take part in OCBC Cycle Singapore. In total, a record 12,000 people took part in the three-day event, which took them past iconic landmarks such as the Sheares Bridge, Singapore Flyer and Marina Bay Sands. Acting Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin helped flag off the Super Challenge category at the F1 Pit Building, before taking part in the 59-kilometre challenge himself. OCBC Cycle Singapore also saw representatives from various charities take part to raise funds. The event is into its sixth year, and attendance has grown steadily. It attracted just over 5,000 riders in its first edition in 2009. Mr Tan said: "More people are responding, I think not just to cycling but... many sports. And that's encouraging. “That’s good for the growing sporting fraternity. What it means from the competitive angle is that perhaps you might have a larger pool to draw people from." Mr Tan said the government is committed to seeing cycling grow as a mode of transport. But having dedicated cycling lanes on roads here is something the authorities will have to explore further. He cited space constraints as a potential obstacle and pointed to alternatives that are already in place. He said: "Well, we have park connectors, which I think is increasing in connectivity, and I think that's a great way (to encourage people to cycle). “It's not ideal for competitive cycling because you can't really go at fast speeds, but I think for the majority of people when they're cycling, I think park connectors are great. Both the ABC Waters programme and park connectors -- I think when they are fully mature, you will have a fairly dense network." - CNA/xq Anybody went?

  11. http://www.tremeritus.com/2014/03/06/reach-1000-inputs-on-budget-2014-have-been-received/ REACH: 1,000 inputs on Budget 2014 have been received March 6th, 2014 | Author: Editorial Dr Amy Khor The local media reported that REACH Chairwoman Amy Khor led an online chat session on the Budget recently. She revealed that more than “1,000 inputs on Budget 2014 have been received by REACH through its various platforms”. She said, “Over half of the feedback was about initiatives announced to build a fair and equitable society, such as the S$8-billion Pioneer Generation Package (PGP), healthcare affordability issues and help for older workers.” No surprise whatsoever, she said overall, while there was broad and strong support for the Budget, some had concerns, such as if higher social spending by the government will lead to higher taxes in future. Dr Khor also said others had lauded the fact that funds for the Pioneer Generation Package were set aside upfront so that the burden will not fall on the younger generation of taxpayers. With the details of the PGP out, it’s inexplicable that of all the ‘concerns’ expressed, our REACH Chairwoman chose to highlight the one concern about potential ‘higher taxes in future’. Many TRE readers and others on alternative media have little of such concerns. Instead, overwhelmingly, the issue for most is how the PGP $8 billion figure, a never-before one-off expenditure, could be magically set aside in one lump sum i.e. about 14% of total budget amount. Finance Minister Tharman did say that the government “will not draw on past reserves, as we have sufficient surpluses from the last few years”. However, he did not elaborate on the details in Parliament. Some also asked who and how the $8 billion will be managed. Mr Tharman had said that the $8 billion set aside for the PGP, with accumulated interest over time, will meet its full projected cost of $9 billion, including a buffer for inflation. Again, Mr Tharman did not elaborate on the details of how interest will be earned. Such online discussions on alternative media showed that Singaporeans are increasingly getting very sophisticated in their thinking and the government need to be even more open and transparent especially when Singaporean taxpayers’ monies are involved. The government should realise that it is now dealing with a different generation of Singaporeans compared to our parent or grandparent generations.

  16. Not many notices but 2014 share the same dates & days with 1997 ... Will history repeats itselfs ... Happening in 1997 Asian financial crisis, 1997-1998 The Asian financial crisis started in Thailand with the collapse of the Thai baht in July 1997 and quickly spread to the rest of the region. What began as a currency crisis soon affected the wider economy and led to economic downturns in several countries. Singapore was not directly hit but suffered the spillover effects of the economic slowdown among its regional neighbours and fell into recession in the second half of 1998. Realising that stimulating domestic demand was not a viable option in a downturn caused by external circumstances, the Singapore government implemented various measures to help ease the cost burden on businesses and individuals. Just before the Thai baht collapsed in July 1997, it had been the target of intense speculative attacks. For a while, the Thai government managed to defend the currency, which had been pegged to the United States (US) dollar. However on 2 July 1997, it announced that it would no longer intervene and would allow the baht to float. The sharp depreciation of the baht against the US dollar began that same day. Given its close economic linkages with other Asian countries, Singapore could not escape the effects of the financial crisis facing its regional neighbours despite strong economic fundamentals. Overall, the Singapore economy contracted by 1.4% in 1998 in terms of real gross domestic product (GDP). This was the first decline in real GDP since the 1985 recession and came after an average growth of 14% per annum from 1986 to 1997. The impact on Singapore was indirect but wide-ranging. Many companies went out of business, leaving their workers without a job. To survive, other companies cut cost by retrenching staff, suspending new recruitment and reducing wages. In the last quarter of 1997, 4,280 workers were retrenched, more than three times higher compared to the previous quarter. The situation worsened in 1998, with quarterly retrenchments averaging about 7,300. Company closures and downsizing also translated into lower demand for commercial, industrial and residential properties, which put downward pressure on property prices and rentals. Stock prices fell and this had a negative wealth effect which further weakened consumer sentiment. for more of the report, link : http://infopedia.nl.sg/articles/SIP_1530_2009-06-09.html It all started from Thailand and now Thailand Gov is unstable with peoples still camping outside Gov buildings. Hope this will not repeat again in 2014 ....

  18. After its world premiere in India last year, the 2014 Honda City made its Asian debut in Thailand recently. They will receive a total of six different variants starting from 550,000baht(S$21,000) for the base model which is fitted with a five-speed manual transmission. For those who want some convenience, they can opt for the new seven-speed CVT transmission which is said to improve efficiency and effectively replaces the old five-speed automatic. The new City gets a mildly improved 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine which churns out 120bhp and 145Nm of torque. Changes to the engine include a tweaked i-VTEC system, friction reduction (low tension oil seal, zigzag piston pattern coating) and weight reduction via an integrated resin intake manifold. Like its rival, the Vios, the 2014 Honda City also grew in terms of wheelbase length to improve its interior space. An increase of 50mm allows it to match the Nissan Almera’s wheelbase while overall length is just 25mm longer than the previous model. The Thailand-market City gets a seven-inch multimedia system which supports Bluetooth and other media connectivity features. An interesting feature for the 2014 Honda City is its touch-enabled automatic climate control system which is quite similar to Lexus’s IS saloon. It now also gets rear air-con vents which will prove useful in our country. Other niceties include keyless entry, push-start ignition and multi-function steering wheel with paddles shifters. Some of the cars with higher specifications will feature six airbags, VSA stability control, Hill Start Assist and a multi-angle rear view camera that allows you to adjust up to three different levels. To those who are keen on the car, expect the 2014 Honda City to reach our shores in the second quarter of this year.
  19. All data points to the sun as the primary source of short-term and long term climate change on Earth. While volcanic eruptions such as the current one in Iceland can affect short-term weather conditions over a region, planetary climate is governed by solar activity-or lack of it. The first inkling that something had changed with the sun was the recognition of an abnormal sunspot cycle. Then, astronomers noted that all the planets were heating up-even little Pluto on the outskirts of our solar system. While climatologists on Earth massaged the data to make it seem like man-made global warming was real, major climate changes were occurring on Mars. During the peak of the global warming debate, the prestigious National Geographic Magazine published a ground-breaking article by Habibullo Abdussamatov in 2007, "Mars Melt Hints at Solar, Not Human, Cause for Warming, Scientist Says." Habibullo Abdussamatov, an astrophysicist and head of space research at St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory in Russia, stated that solar activity caused the climate change on Earth and that observations of Mars revealed the shrinking of the carbon dioxide ice caps at the Martian South Polar region. In that article, Abdussamatov explained: "The long-term increase in solar irradiance is heating both Earth and Mars." The scientist, accurate in past predictions, has recently pronounced his belief that Earth will enter a "little Ice Age: as early as 2014 and lasting as long as two centuries. The last one occurred between 1650 and 1850 and accounted for many crop failures, outbreaks of famines and mass migrations. Full Article: http://redicecreations.com/article.php?id=13459
  20. LTA noted that ‘many commuters want to work and communicate while on the move’ in the Land Transport Master Plan. But free Wi-Fi service will not be available on trains during the trial. Come the middle of next year, commuters on the North East Line (NEL) can expect to have free Wi-Fi access on the go, under a trial by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) that is aimed at improving connectivity. The initiative was revealed in the Land Transport Master Plan 2013 released last week, with the LTA noting that “many commuters want to work and communicate while on the move”. The service would also be available on “major interchange stations”, but not during train rides. In response to TODAY’s queries, an LTA spokesperson said: “LTA will test the viability of Wi-Fi at underground stations on our MRT network to enhance wireless connectivity for commuters while (they are) waiting for trains. From mid-2014, we will carry out a trial by implementing Wi-Fi at stations along the North East Line and at major interchange stations.” The authority, however, did not specify what the major interchange stations were, adding that “more details will be provided when ready”. The trial is part of the LTA’s push for smart travel. In the master plan, the authority also revealed plans to improve its MyTransport.SG smartphone app in the next few years by rolling out services such as real-time bus and train-platform crowd updates to help commuters avoid congestion. Many countries in Asia have already started providing free Wi-Fi on their transport systems. Hong Kong’s Mass Transit Railway recently extended free Wi-Fi hot spots to all its stations, while the Tokyo Metro introduced a free Wi-Fi trial at 30 of its train stations this year. Members of Parliament (MPs) on the Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) for Transport and experts TODAY spoke to generally welcomed the trial, noting that smartphone connectivity is increasingly becoming part of a good travel experience. Pointing to a recent report on the decreasing number of free Wireless@SG hot spots, former journalist and technology blogger Alfred Siew said the provision of additional free hot spots “is always good”. “But ... it might be good to extend it to inside trains, because that is where commuters spend most of (their) time when they are travelling,” he added. But this would “cost more or take more time to wire up all the tunnels, compared with just wiring up the stations”. Regular NEL commuters had mixed reactions to what some termed as a “value-added” service. Marketing executive Elvis Chiu, 29, felt the LTA should first focus on ensuring transport operators get the basics, such as train reliability, frequency and customer service, right. “Meanwhile, the telcos and train operators can work together to improve the signals and bandwidth underground,” he said. However, senior executive W Lim, 27, welcomed free Wi-Fi on platforms, given spotty 3G service on the NEL. She said: “It can be quite frustrating when whatsapp-ing friends to confirm meeting places, so free Wi-Fi will certainly help on occasions like these.” Tourists like Ms Sophie Hennessy, 26, from Australia, said free Wi-Fi would be helpful in accessing navigation apps. “With free access, I can search for directions to reach my destination,” she said. Ang Mo Kio GRC MP Ang Hin Kee, who sits on the GPC for Transport, said the LTA must ensure the effort is not a “cosmetic one which cannot support, say, more than 50 people logging on”. He added that the service was unlikely to lead to a fare increase, since the investment is made by the LTA and not the transport operators.
