  1. I was considering the Jetta as a replacement for our family car, but down at the showroom, the CO expressed more interest in the Golf instead. Would appreciate feedback from the bros and sis driving the current Golf. In particular, Internet has a lot of negative reviews about the DSG gearbox. Does anyone driving the Mk 7 Golf have any issues so far? Thanks in advance.

  5. Hi all What a nice morning to have today, as usual when i was about to turn into the carpark , i have noticed this white Lancer EX , being stationary on the lane beside me. As this is a one lane road, why should this driver just parked his car on the lane leading to the exit of the carpark which caused inconvience to the others , btw he had his P plate hung up there. After i had parked, walked passed the car at 1015am, went for my breakfast, came back its still there at 1130am...and when i was about to leave the CP, several cars where delayed due to this car parked there ...haiz...So what do you think ? 6. Today i got an itching feeling to pump my spare Tyre. The car was bought new 5 years, and i never touch the spare Tyre. Who does anyway? Took out everything from the boot, lift up the cover and took a look at the spare. Press the rubber, it's damm soft. haul out the entire Tyre and start pumping. The machine read just 40 kpa when i inserted the nozzle into the valve! Imagine i got a Tyre puncture and i had to use the spare Tyre. No way i can drive with a 40 kpa Tyre...... So don't forget your spare, especially you go into msia frequently........
  7. ST Forum Jun 23, 2011 Unhappy about experience at restaurant ON JUNE 9, my family and I went to Jack's Place to celebrate my husband's birthday. We arrived there at 7.30pm and placed our order. Thereafter, four couples strolled in. Thirty minutes after we had our soup, we were still waiting for our main course of NZ striploin steak and baked codfish. On the other hand, the four couples were already digging into their steaks. We asked a waiter to check on our order but he did not update us. We then approached the manager, who said the food we had ordered would normally take a longer time to prepare. I am not convinced this was the reason. I believe the staff forgot the order. Ironically, the bill came before we asked for it. Is this the type of service to expect from Jack's Place? Why wasn't there any follow-up from the manager when we were the only table left waiting? 10. Brothers and sisters, was wondering what mobile phone other than Nokia Symbian os has the numeric numberpad T9 for input? Does ios, android or wp have it? Me very used to fingering between the 9 numbers and don't fancy a full keyboard... But Nokia is kind of lacking and slow in browser etc... So wondering what are my options...
  11. i'm looking for random spare parts for my Getz which i hope to find in the local scrap yards. the parts which i'm looking for, the local stockists don't have...even if they have, it will be expensive understand that there are scrap yard operators as listed in the link below: http://www.onemotoring.com.sg/publish/onem..._operators.html i'm totally new to visiting scrap yards so as a newbie sotong, a few questions which i hope the lao jiaos can answer: 1) can i just visit any of the scrap yard to look for spare parts and buy them from these yard owners? i suppose it makes sense to call beforehand to check if there are any Getz (my car model) lying in the yard? 2) do i need to pay a fee to enter the yard even if i don't buy anything? 3) anything which i should be careful of? it is legal to buy parts from scrapped cars right? (sorry for the duh question ) 4) any scrap yard which you would recommend to go? 5) if i do find something which i want and it requires dismantling, is it expected of me to DIY dismantle or will the yard operator help? sorry for the many many blur questions. thanks!
  12. SMS about terrorist attack in Bugis a hoax: Police An SMS about a possible terrorist attack on Bugis Village has been circulating amongst members of the public. But police say there is no credible evidence to suggest such an attack to date. Still, they've taken the necessary precautions to enhance security in the area. And investigations into the case are ongoing. In the meantime, police are advising members of the public to not be overly alarmed, and to contact the police immediately if they notice any suspicious activity. They also want to warn those who would intentionally mislead the public by perpetuating false threats to public safety. The police say they take a very stern view against anyone who attempts to cause undue public alarm or fear in such a manner. They added that they will not hesitate to take action against such perpetrators. http://938live.sg/portal/site/938Live/menu...000e101000aRCRD anyone here got receive the sms?
  13. Hi everyone, Are there any website or forum that discusses about Singapore PR Application? I just received a letter from ICA that my wife's (who is from PRC) application for PR has been rejected only after submitting the application 2 months ago. Very sian becos it is siong psychologically for her to just stay at the home and not able to work to contribute to the family.... considering the fact that both of us are university grad. Really appreciate if someone can point out a good forum to discuss and enquire about this issue. Thanks ahead!
  14. Recently my wife was approached closed door on the above slimming method. Touting using all natural ingredients, no-hunger, no-subsequent weight gain, blah blah blah, even its promotional brochure showed our MM Goh and Health minister and another VIP I forgot, that 'suggested' them to be among its clients. It is basically eating some supplements over 3 months to balance all the smoky technical jargons, and your body will be set good for life. The catch: S$2288! It claimed to have 10 years presence here though I have never ever heard about it before. What I do not like is that a preliminary check was executed with a OSIM weighing machine, then you will be bombarded you you are this age but your body is 10+ years older, and your body got so much fat above norm that it can be rid of by exercising, very much using scare tactic. And if you bring up cost, the response would be that isn't your health worth more than the this money blah blah blah? Like I am sinning by not buying this product, worse still, not getting for your loved ones. Very much playing on guilt conscience! Anyone has any experience on this?
  15. Hi all, will be getting my first new ride soon. Would like to find out if there is a website or any other resource that tells you shows the parts of a car, what it does and how to maintain them ? Pls excuse me if this has been asked before, would appreciate if you could direct me. Thanks to all 'lao jiao' bros.
  16. Lesson 101 for Driver. The spark plug's location exposes it to extreme temperature variations, chemicals, fuels and oils. It is also attacked by cylinder pressures produced by the piston and cam timing, then it is also assaulted by high-output ignition units. As a result of all of this, one can effectively learn what the engine is doing by reading the firing end of the spark plugs. By careful examination of the plug's color, gap, and any deposits that reside on it, you will be shown the efficiencies as well as deficiencies of what is going on in the engine. Spark plugs should be checked at least yearly, and replaced as often as necessary. In most cases you can follow the manufacturers recommendations for replacement intervals. How a Spark Plug Works: The basics of a spark plug is that it must perform two primary functions. To Ignite the Air/Fuel mixture To REMOVE the heat out of the combustion chamber Spark plugs transmit electrical energy that turns fuel into working energy. A sufficient amount of voltage must be supplied by the ignition system to cause the spark to jump the across the spark plug gap, thus creating what is called Electrical Performance. Additionally, the temperature of the spark plug's firing end must be kept low enough to prevent pre-ignition, but high enough to prevent fouling. This is called Thermal Performance and is determined by the heat range of the spark plug. It is important to understand that spark plugs CANNOT create heat, only remove it! The spark plug works as a heat exchanger, pulling unwanted thermal energy away from the combustion chamber and transferring the heat to the engine's cooling system. The heat range is defined as a plug's ability to dissipate heat. The rate of heat is determined by: The insulator nose length Gas volume around the insulator nose Materials and/or construction of the center electrode and porcelain insulator Now to the actual function: As the Ignition is triggered it sends the spark through the rotor, to the cap, down the wire and then it jumps the gap of the spark plug, a spark kernel is created that ignites the air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. Proper timing of this spark is not the only concern as described above. You must have the proper heat range as well as the correct gap. Opening The Plug Gap: On weaker or stock ignitions, opening up the gap CAN increase the spark kernel size, thereby creating a more efficient burn. The problem lies in that any added gap creates more strain on the other ignition parts. Coils may not have enough stored energy to fire, or in the least case, not enough energy to cross the gap, creating a miss-fire. Plug wires will break down due to the added resistance as the spark tries to reach ground. Rotor and Cap, as well as points (if you still have an interest in prehistoric ignitions), and the carbon bushing in the center of the distributor cap will show early failures. All of this is because the greater the gap and the higher the voltage requirement to jump the gap. Do not forget the gap between the rotor arm to the distributor cap too. A high performance rotor is a bit longer at the tip, allowing less spark loss or chance of spark scatter in the cap as the spark attempts to jump the plug gap. It is also possible to slow down a car if the gap is too big. Spark Plug Heat Range: A spark plug's heat range has no relationship on the actual voltage transferred through the spark plug. Rather, the heat range is a measure of the spark plug's ability to remove heat from the combustion chamber. The heat range measurement is determined by several factors: The length of the ceramic center insulator nose The insulator nose's ability to absorb and transfer combustion heat The material composition of the insulator The material composition of the center electrode The longer the insulator nose gives you a larger surface area exposed to combustion gasses and heat is dissipated slowly. This also means the firing end heats up more quickly. We are talking about exposed ceramic length, not extended tip length. The insulator nose length is the distance from the firing tip of the insulator to the point where the insulator meets the metal shell. Since the insulator tip is the hottest part of the spark plug, the tip temperature is a primary factor in pre-ignition and fouling. The spark plug tip temperature must remain between 450
  17. The Singapore Vehicle Traders Association (SVTA) clarified today (Oct 21) that of the 2,438 motor vehicle complaints reported by the Straits Times on Saturday, only 1,084 were related to defective goods. The article — “Grouses about car dealers speeding up” — stated that the 2,438 complaints the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) received from January to September this year has exceeded the 2,255 made in the whole of last year. SVTA President Neo Tian Ting explained that the figure of 2,438 also includes enquiries and feedback, which do not require CASE to take action. Mr Neo also said that the spike in complaints this year can be attributed to the lemon law, which came into effect last September. Consumers, he said, could be contacting CASE more often as there is a misunderstanding of the lemon law. In fact, only 156 were filed and assisted cases pursued against SVTA members in relation to the lemon law and other complaints such as delays in delivery and misrepresentation — meaning CASE handled claims on the consumers’ behalf or assisted the consumers in drafting letters to approach the vendors themselves. Singapore has about 800 to 900 car dealers. About 410 of them are SVTA members. Source: http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/only-1-2-complaints-against-car-traders-were-about-lemons-svta
  18. Complaints against motor vehicle dealers have accelerated this year, and Singapore's consumer watchdog wants the industry to take action. The Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) received 2,438 complaints against the motor vehicle industry from January to September. This already exceeds the 2,255 made in the whole of last year - when it topped Case's list of most-complained about industries for the first time. Most of the complaints were aimed at used car dealers. Common gripes included defective parts, late delivery, refusing to repair defects and keeping customers' deposits when loans were not approved. To mitigate the problem, Case wants all members of the Singapore Vehicle Traders Association (SVTA) to provide after-sales service, including repairs. It also wants them to pay for third-party inspections of all cars and repair any defects before selling them. 19. Zheng hoo lang poh mata liao http://news.asiaone.com/news/singapore/facebook-user-draws-flak-posting-disparaging-remarks-about-filipinos?page=0%2C0 Facebook user draws flak for posting disparaging remarks about Filipinos Wednesday, October 9, 2013 - 00:00Chai Hung Yin The New Paper SINGAPORE - She described Filipinos as "poor", "smelly from cleaning toilets" and "uneducated". She also mocked Miss Philippines Megan Young, 23, for winning the Miss World 2013 in Bali on Sept 28. Using the name Devina DeDiva, her racial slurs, posted on her Facebook social networking timeline, invoked the ire of netizens and prompted one Singaporean to lodge a police report. Ms Devina had posted: "Miss Philippines is Miss World? What a joke! I did not know those maids have anything else in them Ha Ha Ha." The post attracted 20 likes and 468 shares within a day. It was not clear when she posted the status update as the latest search for the Facebook account turned up a message that said the page was unavailable. It is likely the page was removed. But outraged netizens were able to capture screenshots of the post and its comments before the account was deleted. Others have tried to establish Ms Devina's identity. She was initially thought to be an Indian national, but was later said to be a Singaporean Indian. She is said to be a student at SIM University and also works as a laboratory analyst. Her LinkedIn networking website account is believed to have also been deleted. The screenshots have been re-posted on other websites with scathing responses to her post. Many defended Filipinos. Someone named Manoj Sharma posted: "Filipino girls r cute, humble and honest as far as I know. I am glad to have great friends from the Philippines." But that invited a reply from Ms Devina, who posted: "They r poor, smelly from cleaning toilets & uneducated." When another netizen hinted that she is ignorant, she replied: "Ignorant? Get ur vocab checked dude majority r maids & 1 won such a title! It's shocking & dumb!" Photo Gallery: Racial slurs against Miss World winner Megan Young Click on thumbnail to view photos. Source: AFP / Reuters / Internet 'Student' When contacted by The New Paper, SIM University confirmed that it has a student going by the name cited by netizens. Its spokesman said: "We are doing our due diligence to establish the facts of the case. If ascertained that our code of conduct for students has been violated, we will take appropriate disciplinary actions." International media has reported that Ms Devina has lost her job following her postings, quoting "a reliable source". The International Business Times, an online publication headquartered in the United States, reported that she was "fired from her position as an assistant teacher of a school being run by Filipino superiors". She is believed to have created another Facebook account and continued her rants there. The police confirmed that a police report was made and they are looking into the matter. A Singaporean, who wanted to be known as Mr Anthony, confirmed that he had made the police report on Thursday at about 1pm. The 27-year-old civil servant told The New Paper: "I'm concerned with the comments made by this person, especially when racial harmony is threatened and I see this being spread online. "Racial harmony is very important and these kind of comments should not be tolerated." He said that he first read about the posts on a forum. He then logged into his Facebook account and saw screenshots of the comments that have been re-posted. He said: "I want to inform the police that there's such a thing and for them to find out, if there's any offence committed."

  21. I had been buying GNC "Glucosamine 750 Chondroitin 600" for several years in the local stores. It cost about S$150 per bottle of 120 tablets. I usually buy it during my birthday month under 33% discount as GNC member. Hence it cost about S$100 per bottle. Now, i am feeling quite astonished after I discover how much the same thing cost in the US after a recent trip there. I know that GNC is actually a US company and the local franchise is owned by global active which is a subsidiary of OSIM. The same thing cost about S$40 (vs S$150 nett in sg) in the US GNC store. Incredible mark-up. I wonder if the franchisor or the franchisee is earning the bulk of this mark-up?
