  6. getting paranoid about less than smooth gear changes on my six year old honda. drove down to Khang's auto transmission at Sin Ming but it was closed... now a bus park ... and a car wash. Did the $6 snow wash, and was told by the folks there that Khang's closed end of 2011. Anyone know if they closed or shifted? Where else can I get my auto trans inspected and maintained - prefer a specialist so that they can be specific about the specific recommendations, and not just a blanket "overhaul".

  13. Chinese auto giant Wanxiang wins Fisker bid By Katie Fehrenbacher Summary: Chinese auto parts giant Wanxiang has won a bid for electric car maker Fisker for $149 million, and a judge has approved it. Will they restart production of the Karma and make the Atlantic soon? A Delaware judge approved the sale of bankrupt electric car maker Fisker and its assets to Chinese auto parts giant Wanxiang, according to local reports on Tuesday. Wanxiang, which also bought up bankrupt battery maker A123 Systems in late 2012, won the bid over Hong Kong billionaire Richard Li’s company Hybrid Technology, and the auction occurred over the end of last week. As Quartz put it, the auction had “pitted two Chinese billionaires against one another: Wanxiang’s Lu Guanqiu vs. Hong Kong telecoms titan Richard Li.” Wanxiang bid $149 million for Fisker, which is substantially larger than some earlier prices that had been offered, but just a fraction of Fisker’s valuation at one time. Lu’s advantages were that Wanxiang owns A123 — which made the batteries for Fisker’s Karma car — and also that he appeared to be willing to bail out unsecured creditors. Ray Lane’s Fisker Karma Wanxiang has said if it wins the bid it can soon restart production on Fisker’s first electric car, the Karma, and it can start providing parts and services for current Karmas on the roads. It will also resume development of the second car, the Atlantic. Only about 2,000 Karmas were sold before Fisker stopped production. Wanxiang’s U.S. division, based in Elgin, Illinois, has 6,000 workers in the U.S. and $2.5 billion in annual revenue. The Chinese company has a total of $13 billion in revenue and 45,000 employees across the world. The head of Wanxiang America, Pin Li, called cleantech “the new frontier for civilization,” in an interview with me a couple years ago. The company is involved in all types of clean technology, from electric cars, to solar, to wind farms, to batteries. Wanxiang has also invested $420 million into GreatPoint Energy, a company based in Cambridge, Mass. that converts coal into cleaner-burning natural gas. At the time that deal was described by the Wall Street Journal as “the largest ever by a Chinese corporation into a venture-capital-funded U.S. company.” Wanxiang also invested in another struggling company electric car company Smith Electric Vehicles. As with Wanxiang’s deal with A123, controversy will follow the realization that a Chinese conglomerate will likely be taking over an electric car maker that got substantial funding from the U.S. government. But as I reported yesterday, there’s money coming from Asia for some of these hard to fund cleantech innovations. Is the world ready for more Karmas? The car received weak reviews and the brand has been tarnished substantially. But clearly there’s been high demand for Tesla and its cars, so if a revived Fisker can overcome its past problems, it could find a market for its cars.

  17. This photo taken on Thursday, Oct 10, 2013, shows Japanese auto giant Toyota Motor demonstrating its pre-collision system which uses automatic steering in addition to automatic braking to prevent collisions, in Tokyo. Toyota on Friday, Oct 11, 2013, unveiled the next generation of cars featuring an auto pilot system that will swerve to avoid collisions and also keep to the middle of the road, all without drivers touching the wheel. Toyota on Friday unveiled the next generation of cars featuring an auto pilot system that will swerve to avoid collisions and also keep to the middle of the road, all without drivers touching the wheel. The Japanese giant autos using the self-driving technology could be available on the market in just a few years' time. "These advanced driving support technologies prevent human errors, reduce driving stress and help drivers avert accidents, which has a big potential to reduce the number of traffic deaths," Toyota managing director Moritaka Yoshida said at a presentation in Tokyo. Leading automakers and technology firms, including Toyota, rival Nissan and Internet giant Google, have been working on self-driving and assisted-driving technology for years. Toyota, the world's biggest automaker, said that while drivers would still need to be alert and take part in the driving process, it essentially lets them put the vehicle on auto-pilot, leaving most of the work to the computer system. The Automated Highway Driving Assist (AHDA) system lets vehicles communicate wirelessly to avoid running into each other while keeping the car in the middle of the road lane -- no matter how many twists and turns lie ahead. "Cars with these technologies recognise the accelerating or slowing speed of those ahead, which also helps avoid traffic jams," said project manager Mitsuhisa Shida. "They can wirelessly exchange data once every 0.1 seconds." The company plans to install AHDA in its commercial models over the next few years. Toyota has already introduced the pre-collision braking assist system in its Lexus luxury sedan and plans to install it in other models by 2015, with the other technologies to follow. Many cars already have systems that gives drivers a panoramic view to keep watch for nearby objects while parking itself. The latest collision-avoidance system has doubled the detection time of oncoming objects to four seconds from a previous two seconds, Toyota added. The automaker said such advances would be especially helpful for older people. Japan's society is rapidly ageing with over-65s already making up around a quarter of the 128 million-strong population. 19. My friend is telling me about how the pump fail to auto stop when he is filling up petrol causing the petrol to overfill. He thinks it is a problem with his car. I think its the problem with the nozzle at the pump. It had only happened once and after that, he only fills to around 80% based on his estimation. Can someone shed some light on this? Car in question is a Nissan Latio.
  20. Been hearing about scumbag dealers all over the place but this particular one is different. Had a deal with him 2 weeks ago. Everything went smoothly but on the day of after collecting the ride found something not right with the car. Theres a whining sound fr the back and it gets worse when the speed went higher. During test drive not noticeable coz only did a short distance in the neighborhood. Went to my regular workshop and the guys told me the rear differential gone case. So no choice ask them go ahead and i called the dealer. Told me go ahead with the repair 1st then later on will settle with me. In my mind i was thinking hor seh liao dealer universal pattern come out already but no choice gotta get it fixed coz travelling on the highway was seriously un-tahan-able. On the day of collecting my car, was thinking of how to tell the dealer abt my claim and the second issue came up. LSD chwee. Same thing drove back to my workshop and got it fixed. By then i got abit worried as the repair bills are chalking up to abt 2k+ and my frens were telling me dealers being dealers i wun be compensated a single cent as they will push all responsibilities. Still, tot try no harm. 1st day called say not free. Same for second day. Thinking of giving up and finally caught him on line and he asked me to meet him in his office. Showed him the bill, did some calculation while kept shaking his head like on drugs, pull out his check book and wrote me a chq. A chq in full to cover the repairs. I was really surprised as i was half expecting only a token fr him. Before i cld say anything, he told me: Remember me. I am not ur regular car dealer, i cho swee swee one, wif a big grin. So, I found out today not all car dealers are asssholes. There are still some good ones ard, at least this one is. Where to find him? Shun Li Industrial Park Blk 99 #03-02.

  24. PART 1 - TAS-SG, The Overview (photos here have s--t res. becos image tags do not allow for full res images) http://garage36.blogspot.sg/ Had to pen my thoughts just as i got back from TAS-SG yesterday evening. For the first time ever, TAS has brought it's show overseas (Thailand's is Bangkok International Auto Salon) and i was fortunate to be invited for a short early preview of the show before the doors opened to the public so was able to get in some shots of the cars before the crowds swarmed in. Consisting of one main hall, it isn't quite as big as the main show in Japan, nor are the cars parked as tightly together might i add. It can pretty much be covered in less than a day, but let's not jump to conclusions just yet. I'm guessing for petrolheads, one of the main draws are the presence of the Japanese tuner houses which to give the organisers credit, getting them down was probably a hat-trick in itself given the limited market our little island has for them. Although i would have hoped for a more stellar showcase of cars, i won't complain. After all, we have to start somewhere right? As the other members of the press got in as many shots as possible, i decided to just take in as much as i can while occasionally getting in a photo or two. One thing i had wished for was for more merchandise from the overseas exhibitors. If you've been to the show in Japan, one of the things to take note of when visiting is to keep a tight watch over your wallet as there are just tonnes and tonnes of goodies to be bought! The only exhibitor which brought along lots of stuff to buy was Vertex, unfortunately, they forgot to bring along a car to showcase. I'm guessing their 2JZ powered BMW is probably busy in the D1 circuit to make this trip. Well, there's always next time. You can buy a BMW keychain from them though. It looks pretty rad. RE Amemiya also brought along some goodies but their prices reflect their exclusivity. From cars that made the long boat ride down, we swap over to take a look at those which made the trip from just across the border. It's pretty interesting to see how automotive styling has evolved over the years, from loud and bombastic aerokits to the current stance movement. Some cars stranger than others, but i do love a couple of retro JDM rides that were present. Especially this brown KE70 Corolla, so clean. Just perfect. This little carbon wrapped Civic also had my attention for the longest time. I will do a more detailed post of the more notable cars later.
