  3. Investment tips - from the Red Cross Lim Tern Poh's experiences and observations in his daily life give him investment ideas. Wed, Oct 26, 2011 The Business Times By Dolly Chia A GOOD book can stir the heart. For 23-year-old Lim Tern Poh, reading The Automatic Millionaire by David Bach was all he needed to kick-start his investing career. When he was 17, the book revealed to him the world of mutual funds, which became his first investment. Dollardex.com was his gateway to the investment society. Subsequently, he started diversifying his portfolio by going into equities. Every dollar in his portfolio came from his own savings from his part- time job. The money-savvy college student won the Money SENSible Youth Award presented by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) during his sophomore year in Republic Polytechnic. Currently embarking on his second year in finance at Singapore Management University (SMU), he hopes to enter private banking upon graduation, while growing his portfolio 10-20 per cent. Q: What do you currently invest in? A: I invest primarily in mutual funds that focus on Singapore, such as Aberdeen Singapore Equities, and equities in general. I also hold StarHub and Sheng Siong stocks right now. My most recent purchase was SMRT stock. As Peter Lynch said: 'Investors can beat the market by using common sense and information available to all of us as we go about our day-to-day lives.' You see the trains getting more crowded now, and with the new second line, I'm sure SMRT will have higher future profits. Q: What was your best investment? A: My best investment was in StarHub. I hold some StarHub shares and I'm quite happy with it. I gained about 10-20 per cent from investing in its stocks. I am still holding them right now. Q: And your worst investment? A: My worst would be a unit trust because back then during the 2009 financial crisis I think I sold off too early; I didn't hold on long enough. That's why I think I made quite a loss in the unit trust which I initially bought when I was 17 or 18. I invested in it for 2-3 years back then. If I had held on to it longer, I would've gotten much more. Q: What is your investment strategy? A: My investment strategy depends on a lot of factors. For example, through your daily lives, you can observe what are the better companies. By observing that trains are getting more crowded, it might be a good time to buy SMRT now. Q: What are your plans after graduation? A: I plan to work in a bank, maybe on the investment side, but now it's still tentative because it depends on whether I would still have the interest when I graduate. Now I'm still exploring other alternatives. Perhaps other than banking, I could go into sales in the front office of the banking operations. Q: Do you have an investment strategy? A: Take on calculated risks so that when you invest, you don't take on too much or too little risk. It is based on my individual judgement. I can't put it in words. It is subject to a lot of things like market conditions, personal opinions of the market and other things. I believe in Warren Buffet in 'buying low, selling high', so I look for stocks that have low P/E ratios. On top of that, I also look at the fundamental analysis as it teaches you what is a good company to buy while TA (technical analysis) tells you when is a good time to buy. Q: Do you have any valuable lessons to share? A: When it comes to investing, what I learn from textbooks is not enough. I am a member of the Red Cross disaster management committee. So you're taught how to manage a disaster when it happens, so from there I learn more about risk management. When a disaster happens, you're taught how to remain calm and be objective. So I apply those principles in investments and when the market is volatile, I learn to use those principles to keep my emotions under control and be objective. The textbook tells you to be calm and objective during a crisis, but without going through real experience it's hard to apply that. You need to do something outside the textbook to learn about risk management. These are the essential soft skills which will help you in your investments. Q: What other exposure do you have to investment? A: I am actually a part-time financial planner for Manulife Financial now. That's one of the reasons I am considering sales in a bank's front office. I have worked as a financial planner for AXA Life Insurance and met a good mentor who advised me to move to Manulife after six months in AXA. I have been in Manulife for one-and-a-half years now. Q:What do you find so rewarding or fascinating about investing? A: Investing is fascinating because it is not just a test of one's analytical ability; it is also a test of one's emotional stability, foresight, courage and discipline. I cannot think of any other thing that is so intellectually stimulating, challenging and rewarding. This makes investing one of the most exciting things in life that I have ever come across.
  4. BEWARE of this used watch dealer in Hong Kong, Kowloon Mongkok. They are freakin crooks. One time they will tell one thing and the next time they will tell a totally different story. I was aiming one used watch yesterday, the salesman offered to sell me at a discount. When I went to the shop today, they told me straight in the face NO DISCOUNT. PRICES STRICTLY IN NETT, and in aggressive manner. Best thing is, the very same salesman I talked to yesterday, was like totally lost his memory, denied everything he spoke yesterday. DO AVOID THIS SHOP OF CROOKS!!! Mongkok Lin Sing 68 Argyle Street, Mongkok, Kowloon, Hong Kong

  6. Just for awareness: My mum found these 2 pieces of metal in the Promfret's stomach, which is to add on to the weight of the fish. This early morning is her 1st time buying from Chinatown, so she didn't know which stall is a 'reputable' one. This seller also one kind, preying on those aunties busy with grocery shopping during this pre-cny period. Hope he doesn't sleep well at night... Lastly, Happy Lunar new year!

  9. STOMPer Dave says these men lost their tempers at a petrol kiosk, hurling expletives at each other for half an hour. According to the STOMPer the man in white even swore at a bystander who shouted 'police' to stop them. The STOMPer related the incident: "This quarrel broke out at Upper Aljunied's Esso petrol kiosk! "This scenario happened at 2pm, and ended up lasting half an hour! "The argument was about payment of some kind. I'm not sure what as it was all in Hokkien. "All sorts of explicit vulgarities were thrown at each other, and the uncle in the striped tees even showed the young man a vulgar hand sign. "When someone shouted 'police', the guy in white shouted 'so what?' and used hokkien vulgarties at the kind citizen! "Half an hour later, they went back into the petrol kiosk." This man, recently spotted arguing at a petrol kiosk, was seen involved in another public incident -- this time threatening a woman. He had even aimed a kick at the woman at one point to intimidate her. Just five days ago, STOMPer Dave had spotted him arguing publicly at an Esso petrol kiosk in Upper Aljunied. According to the STOMPer, the disagreement then had been over money. STOMPer J wrote: "This happened at Mountbatten Square, where a lot of childcare centres are located. "This man was shouting vulgarities in Hokkien, and was threatening a woman in the carpark there."
  10. Hi all, need to warn all potential car buyer of this car broker Tony n a used car shop Itrust. On e 2nd of dec which is about 10days ago,i collected a 2nd hand mazda 6 from this Itrust.E person who delt with me was Tony.Out of these 10days i own this car,i only drove for 2days n e rest of e days it was in workshop!!! When i first viewed e car, this broker told mi that this car everything is Ok!jus that e aircon gas no more n said that its cheap thing asking mi to settle on my own.Fine i told him.few 10 bucks i will settle on my own. After driving for 1day,i drove to a workshop n mechanic told mi that e fan is no running!so,i called that Tony n told him what e mechanic said.He then asked mi to drive to his workshop at AMK autohub.left e car that for 2days n repair cost is $240.Tony returned mi $100 which i have given him as i requested to loan from OCBC n buying my own insurance. He promised to fork out $200 from his pocket to help settle this aircon thingy but when he met me at AMK autohub,he returned me e $100 saying that "this $100 i return u".i thought he is gonna return mi $100 n foot e bill of $240 as well but he asked mi to foot e bill!Of course i talked back saying that he promised to cover up to $200!then he took out another $50 n showed mi his wallet saying that he no money liao! Fine,$100+$50=$150 so i jus need to pay $90.since $90 is not a big amount,i went to settle e bill n drove off. Now os e 2nd problem, when e day i collected this car,i demanded at least $20 petrol in e tank n Tony said ok but during collection, there was none!so when passing him e $100 which i promised him,i deducted $20 n he said can.First thing i do after i drove off,i went to e nearest petrol station to pump $20.after pumping,i noticed e petrol gauge din move at all!maybe too little petrol i thought so i went to pump another $20!But still it did not move at all!So i went to another workshop to have it checked n they said e fuel filter n fuel sensor spoilt.Another 4days in workshop!this time round,Tony said that he is a broker n itrust told him that they dun wanna hold any resposibilites which i reprimanded him!!!i told him will u want to buy such a car?!!if u want,i sell u! Then he kept saying that this car is under consignment,he cant do much.Fine,i said i wanna go down to itrust motor n talk to them.but he kept stopping mi from going down.saying that he will help mi to talk to itrust bla bla bla!Ended up telling mi that itrust dun wanna hold responsibility again! Then today after collecting e car which costed $570 for e repair,i went down to itrust.to my surprise, itrust moved!n a salesman beside told mi that they moved 2days after i collected my ride which Tony also knew. I think to finish e whole story, will take u guys at least 30mins to finish reading. To cut it short,i m gonna lodge a CASE complaint tomorrow. This is to warn u guy not to trust this shop itrust n this car broker Tony.if u c any car ad in sgcarmart n e seller name is T.M,thats him.

  14. CNA Singaporeans beware of car thefts in JB SINGAPORE: A Singaporean lost his car in Johor Bahru on Saturday while dining just 10 kilometres away from the Causeway. This comes just a day after Johor's police chief reassured visitors that his department is in "full control" of the crime situation in the Malaysian state. The Police Chief had highlighted a 25 per cent drop in the total number of cases last year, as well as a steady decline in crimes against Singaporeans. 62-year-old property manager John Chew travels to Johor with his friends every weekend for golf. But this time he was in for a rude shock, after he finished his meal at On Kee Restaurant along Jalan Permas 10, some 10 kilometres away from the Causeway. "I parked my car just outside the restaurant, and this is a rather big restaurant in Permas Jaya, and we had an early dinner - we started at 5pm and finished at about 5.45pm. And to my horror, when my friend came out to take a smoking break, he didn't see my car and was wondering where it was. That's when the horror came and we realised that my car was hijacked," said Mr Chew, victim of car theft in Johor Bahru. Besides losing the car, Mr Chew and his friends also lost their golfing equipment and personal belongings, like passports. Mr Chew made a police report immediately, and was told by a police officer that it's "most unlikely" to recover his car. Mr Chew said: "I'm pretty surprised. It's a small car, Mitsubishi Colt, I really don't understand why they did it... There could be other reasons; my car's spare parts could be in demand, and these sort of things. But it's definitely not an MPV or SUV, which is normally the target of car thefts in Malaysia that I'm aware of. "The restaurant staff, when I queried them, said that two persons came in a car, tried to (break into) my car, but couldn't. They left and came back in about 15-20 minutes' time, (broke into my car), started it and drove it away. So, it's pretty surprising how they can do that with a car that's equipped with alarm and all that." Johor's Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said on Friday that the number of Singaporean crime victims in Johor remains low, adding that criminals do not target victims based on race, religion or nationality. There were 320 Singaporean crime victims in Johor last year, out of the 14.1 million trips Singaporeans made across the Causeway. Mr Chew and his friends returned home on temporary passports issued by the Singapore Consulate-General in Johor Bahru. Mr Chew said he will continue his regular visits, but with added precaution. He said: "We will still go there but this time with additional precaution and not taking things for granted, like 'it has never happened to me, it will never happen to me'... Irrespective of what you drive, whether it's small car or big car, additional precaution is definitely worth considering. "Apart from keeping our individual passports and personal items on ourselves, if we leave the car, I would consider locking my steering wheel with a pedal brake, so that's an additional deterrent for any would-be thieves, who's going to hijack the car." As for his car, he said the insurance allows him to claim compensation equivalent to the market value. - CNA /ls

  18. Hi friend,i don't know how true it is,my friend's 3 years old[100k km] Toyota Wish, used C.N.G. since his first day, today his engine cannot start, towed to his workshop, mechanic told him,no compression, take engine apart, found wears on the intake valves, the mechanic told him using C.N.G. for long term is very "DRY" for the engine, thus wear off the valve & valve seat[like older times where unleaded petrol is used in engines that runs on leaded petrol],can anyone knows,is this the problem.?By the way,my friend maintain his car very well, using Mobil 1 every 10k km.
  19. Several families lose cash in 'rental car scam' They placed deposits for vehicles that never arrived By Jalelah Abu Baker Several families hoping to rent a car to visit their loved ones during Hari Raya Aidilfitri have lost their deposits in a suspected scam. At least 40 police reports have been made against Easi Car Services by angry customers who put down between $200 and $500 - only to never see the vehicles. Not only have they been left out of pocket, their festive spirit has been dampened by the lack of a car to use to visit their families. BACKGROUND STORY THE HOOK Classified ads in Berita Harian offered cheap 'Hari Raya' packages to rent a car for a week. The shop in Golden Mile Tower looked convincing, with posters of cars, a list of makes available and namecards, although the vehicles were not there. THE VICTIMS After placing deposits of between $200 and $500, customers were told by the dealers to collect the vehicles at 9pm on Sunday from a carpark in Golden Mile Tower. Several families turned up, some with young children and elderly parents in tow, but there were no vehicles. The apparent victims were attracted by a cheap 'Hari Raya' rental package offered in a nondescript classified advertisement in Berita Harian. http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/S...ory_707460.html

  21. Beware the 'Windows Service Centre' scam Letter from Rex J Morais 16 Aug 2011 Today I am writing to warn your readers, after somebody claiming to be from a "Windows Service Centre" telephoned me about so-called error messages from my computer. The line was passed to "senior technicians" who, to some extent, convinced me that my computer had serious malware and spyware and that my firewall was corrupted. I was asked to download and install a software, "Teamviewer'" (which enabled them to control my computer), and to pay S$171 to get my software fixed or risk losing all my computer data within a few hours. As I could see that some changes were being made to my desktop, I promptly disconnected from the Internet, uninstalled the software and restored my computer to its previous settings. I realised it was a scam and a subsequent search online confirmed my suspicions. The scammers even gave a phone number, 8001012199, which does connect to a so-called "Windows Service Centre". There must have been other victims and I hope more are now forewarned.
