  3. Is there any portable charger like those usb kind for camera batteries available in the market? I tried to google it only returns some solar battery charger ... I'm using a canon point and shoot cam, not those SLR... to buy an extra original battery is damn ex, those 3rd party batt doesn't last at all..... one charge definitely not enough for a whole day out while on holiday. How I wish they are camera that uses normal batteries, easy to switch when running out of batt....
  4. Hi guys, hope I can get some advice on my car battery. I got the keys to my Honda City a few weeks ago. If I am not going to drive the car for up to 6 or 7 weeks at one time, how likely is the battery going to be flat and the engine cannot be started? This is considering that the battery is new and the car is in stock condition. I tried looking for a battery manager which seems to be a popular deivce in the States, but no shops here sell it. Some websites advise to disconnect the negative terminal, but I'm not sure if it's easy (and safe) enough to do yourself. Thanks in advance!
  5. Hi all I opened up my car remote control key and it uses CR1620 battery, I went NTUC and Value$ shop, both no selling leh.. May I know where to buy this battery or must go back to car dealer? Thanks
  6. Charging your phone battery can be inconvenient and take awhile, but what if you could get a proper power refueling in just a few minutes? Scientists at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore say they developed a lithium-ion battery that can go from zero to 70% power capacity in two minutes. Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in phones and tablets. See also: 7 Ways to Preserve Your Battery Life on iOS 8 Perhaps even more importantly, the battery lasts much longer than the ones we have now, an attribute that could boost the electric car industry, developers said. The new battery is supposed to last for 10,000 cycles, a lifespan estimated at two decades and more than 10 times longer than what we're used to. The new battery is supposed to last for 10,000 cycles, a lifespan estimated at two decades In contrast, Apple says its phone batteries are designed to "retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles." Generally, the more you recharge a battery, the more it loses its luster over time. The breakthrough here is with the battery's anode or negative pole, which traditionally works with graphite. The graphite is replaced with a newly developed gel made from an "abundant, cheap and safe" material called titanium dioxide that's found in soil. It's also an active ingredient in sunscreen. The researchers were able to morph the spherically-shaped titanium dioxide into tubular strands that are 1,000-times thinner than a human hair. The gel speeds up reactions taking place inside the new battery, propelling the hyper-fast recharging. The researchers think the battery's most important impact will be on the electric car industry. Potential adopters can be turned off by the long recharge times and shorter battery lifespans for electric vehicles. With this battery, however, recharging your car — timewise — wouldn't be so far off from filling up a tank a gas. It should take about five minutes to give you enough power to get back on the road and 15 minutes for a full charge, the researchers said in a statement. Replacement batteries for electric cars are costly, too, with some priced at more than $5,000. Another benefit is that it would cut down on waste resulting from battery disposals. When talking about "breakthroughs" for battery technology, expectations can be very high. Don't treat this as consumer reality just yet, but it's good to know that scientists are trying to make batteries more efficient. Developers expect the new batteries to hit the market in the next two years.
  7. Hi All, I have just changed to Amaron batt at $110. I was given Globatt or omolite and finally chosen amaron. any advice? thks!
  8. i'm a car cam newbie and i've been reading up about the car cam's electrical consumption and it's effect on the car battery. apparently, car battery is built primarily for the purpose of producing a high burst of ampere for cold cranking. it is not designed to be frequently discharged to near or zero charge like in a mobile/laptop battery. doing so will shorten it's life span. the below article from dashcamtalk was very educational for me. i didn't know that setting the car cam power cut-off device to below 12.4V is not a good thing for the car battery. the technician who installed my car cam originally left the cut-off voltage at the default 11.8V as he said it'll give the longest operational time for the car cam. after reading the article, i changed the cut-off voltage to 12.2V which is the highest that the device can do. for you guys who's been using car cam for a long while, what cut-off voltage do you guys set to? do you notice any perceptible shortening of your battery life span for guys who set it below 12V?
  9. Guys, do you guys have any portable electric tyre inflator** and battery charger to recommend? **My car does not come with spare tyre hence I want to buy for contingency. Thks
  10. anyone knows? This CMI korean battery fails in 1/2 a year and I kind of forgot where i change it due to bz schedule and also lost the receipt.... Dunno if bring it back to main distributor will help or not.... Can anyone provide more details on the main distributor? Thanks!
  11. Recently, I change my stock battery to a maintenance free battery. I heard that my ride (Lancer 2006)'s battery needs 55-60 Amp but I install a MF battery of 70 Amp. It was a direct fit in and replacement of my old stock battery. Are batteries are higher Amp bigger in size? Any side effect to the car if I use a battery of higher Amp? I notice my car manual states the battery should be "55D23l" but my 70 Amp battery is "55D26L". What does this mean? Hope bros can enlighten me. Cheers and thanks!
  12. Looking for a 3rd party battery for my point n shoot canon camera. Any recommended one to get based on user experience? Will not consider original battery.
  13. Just changed to Amaron battery but battery indicator still lights up. Does that mean car alternator is faulty or fuse blown? How to check?
  14. almost wanted to get a new phone, then realised, heck, just change battery. Ebay sells replacement kits for $10. Saved a few $$$
  15. Just sharing some of my thoughts and knowledge gathered from reading several articles on the topic. You are welcome to comment. My intention is to raise the awareness of people who are unknowingly taking on excessive risks. Many of you will be aware of the fire hazards of Lithium batteries. We have learnt to accept these hazards knowingly or unknowingly. The technology had been improved and the risks decreased over the years. The risk is never zero. Well known cases include Sony laptop batteries and the recent Boeing battery problems. There are many more. Even reputable MNCs like them face problems given their strict Quality/Reliability/Safety requirements and qualifications. Some of us use Lithium secondary cells without safety certification like UL1642 to power DVRs in our cars 24/7, under the hot sun and unattended. I hope to raise your awareness to the risks of Lithium battery thermal runaways and internal short circuits failure modes. I am not sure typical comprehensive auto insurance in Singapore covers such non-OEM "modifications". I need comments on this. There are simple mitigations that the ordinary consumer can adopt to reduce the risks. It may be troublesome but it takes care of the most risky phases of Lithium battery usage to avoid catastrophic outcomes. I list some of my personal ones, which include non-car related. - Never charge phones beside you when sleeping. I mandate this on my family recently. - Avoid having Lithium battery less than ~40% of charge whether in usage or storage. Undercharge conditions increase risks of internal short circuit that can start a fire, even under storage. - Overcharge is also dangerous, but this is usually not a problem as batteries and charger nowadays have automatic cutoff. - Avoid high temperatures. In Singapore, car parked under the hot sun has induced internal temperature of 60 to 70 degress C. This greatly increase risks of a thermal runaway condition internal of the battery and start a fire. I know people have done tests to show DVRs work under such conditions. I do not think these tests are done over the long term and with enough sample size. You need just 1 event over the lifetime of a battery to create a catastrophic outcome.
  16. Just want to get the views of bros here before I get it to the workshop. Don't wish to go to one with no clues and end up paying more. I'm driving a mazda 3 SP and recently I'm having the following problem, intermittently though: 1) When I start the car, everything seems ok. Idling is fine. I started to move off. When I come to the first stop, car starts to vibrate, RPM drops to about 400 (or maybe lower). I have a volt gauge in the car, and it shows the voltage drop to about 11V. Car vibrates and then stall. 2) Re-start the car again and move off, reach another stop, same thing happens. 3) Re-start and move the car by the road side. Off the car completely, wait for a while, start it again and then move off and everything seems ok till I reach my destination. Observations:- 1) At "ACC ON", volt gauge shows 11.2V 2) Start the car, with everything off including aircon, voltage shows 12.8V 3) With aircon on, the voltage hovers around 12.8V thereabout Any comments about what could possibly be the problem? Thanks
  17. ...is a no no. If your workshop is still doing this, you are well advised to find another. And the reason is something called "Load Dump" Depending on certain conditions, a high voltage of up to 120V can be sent to your ECU. If it survived, you're lucky. If it's crippled or dead, oh well.. According to wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Load_dump In automotive electronics, it refers to the disconnection of the vehicle battery from the alternator while the battery is being charged. Due to such a disconnection of the battery, other loads connected to the alternator see a surge in power line. The peak voltage of this surge may be as high as 120 V and the surge may take up to 400 ms to decay.
  18. using amaron not sure which model recently car keep cannot start, went to a shop to check batt and they say its still 99%. meaning good. thus told me might me 3rd party alarm problem. so went home disarm, and next day car batt was ok. can start engine. went to shop change another set of alarm. initial was ok for 1mth. now problem started again. batt keep go below 10v(but lucky i have a portable jump start kit) in this case, is it possible battery still 99% healthy but unable to hold charge? is it recommend to change the batt even though batt still healthy?

  24. Hi, currently, using this Amaron 85D23L 12V 60AH for 3 yrs 9mths. Still starts on 1st crank. Does this battery give any warnings before it fail? My previous battery, I still remember, before failing, have to crank 2 times before it can start the car. And it lasts 3 weeks before total failure. Regards.
