  1. Hi all! Anyone has any direct business or contacts in Thailand for the beverage industry? I need to bring in some beverage from Thailand and is looking for contacts to tie up with. Any bros/sis have any contacts or lobang mind to PM me? Txs a lot! Cheers! Alvin
  2. any lunch place to suggest other than Expo? lunch => normal self-expensed types, not on company's account
  3. Im planning to do a small scale business with 1 or 2 mini vans primarly to cater to schools and also to corporates during non-school hours. But i do not know where to start. Can people here give pointers both good and bad? Also not sure if i should do it alone or to venture with a partner. Thank you.
  4. Has anyone got into a situation where you were in a dilemma if you should help out your family business? ie, let me paint a scenario (mine): My father started a business from scratch until it expanded overseas. Revenue was quite ok and my family don't have much financial worries. However, he passed away very young (50) and my sister stopped after A levels to join the company to continue the business. Due to some major fraudulent case done by 1 of our staff, it caused major financial loss to the company and the local business was lost. My sister carried on the business overseas and has been mostly overseas since then. Me and my brother had the opportunities (luxury) to finish our education overseas with no worries on finances (except for my sis since already started working). Upon graduation (in different fields), we found work outside and currently are all in a stable situation with our work and our own family. Both me and my bro are in middle level positions. However, recently there are some changes in the ability for my sister to continue work overseas and I'm really wondering if I should not be so selfish and work for the family business if the need arises 1 day. Anyway this was the family business that saw me thru my younger days, overseas studies, which without it, maybe will be without myself today. The reason why I feel I was selfish is because I always felt I'll be wasting my time in my family's business as it's a sunset industry and also not cost efficient/effective because I'll likely to get a major pay cut from my current job. This is a practical concern as I've already got kids & family to support. On a positive note, if I work for my family, I might be able to have more flexible time to build a separate business myself (in my line of speciality), and maybe turn around the family business (rejuvenate the sunset business). I remembered the days when I was young (pri sch), I was always seen by my family's business' staff or family's friends/relatives, as someone with the gift of the gab and someone likely to continue my father's business. So I'm not sure if it's time for me to take up this national service if the need arises. Anyone in the same predicament before?
  5. Hi, Any recommendations? Usually buy and wear shoes from Hush puppies, and is wondering whether there are better alternatives :) Thanks!!
  6. Father: I want you to marry a girl of my choice Son: 'I will choose my own bride!' Father: 'But the girl is Bill Gates's daughter.' Son: 'Well, in that case...ok' Next Father approaches Bill Gates. Father: 'I have a husband for your daughter.' Bill Gates: 'But my daughter is too young to marry!' Father: 'But this young man is a vice-president of the World Bank.' Bill Gates: 'Ah, in that case...ok' Finally Father goes to see the president of the World Bank. Father: 'I have a young man to be recommended as a vice-president.' President: 'But I already have more vice- presidents than I need!' Father: 'But this young man is Bill Gates's son-in-law.' President: 'Ah, in that case...ok' This is how business is done!! Moral: Even If you have nothing, You can get Anything. But your attitude should be positive
  7. How can business be bad for car dealers? The total amount of cars sold by dealer per month can only be as much as the COE allocation no more and no less( unless coe undersubcribed) . Now the COE is trading around the 5k range, I am sure the dealers still make about the same margin? In fact the dealers like the coe to yoyo, cos they sell us a car+ coe package & when it crashes NOBODYl will give us the full rebate back anyway. So I think car dealers still ho seng lee? Btw if u think 5k coe is cheap, it will get cheaper!
  8. Recently, I attended the career presentation on insurance and MLM just to find out the biz opportunity and the earning potentials. Both gave very impressive career presentation on the prospect of the biz. Each shown me their monthly income statement. Average abt $10k/monthly. INSURANCE Needless to say, everyone knows wat insurance man does. Risk management, investment, basically need based selling according to each individual client financial situation. No walk-in customers, got to do the basic... calling on the phone, cold calls, doors knocking, road shows...etc to find prospect. I think its a tough industry to be in despite the attractive passive income they promised over time. MLM The one I listened to sell health supplements, household equipments, air purifier, slimming or cholesterol reducing products(their flagship products). I thought all MLM sell similiar items. Whats the diff anyway.... Well, this also need time to build up the biz.Source own clients too. However, MLM products are more tangible compare to insurance. Assuming you have to decide a career choice between them, which one would you seriously consider? And why?
  9. My relative who runs a curtain design shop with 5-6 sales person said that he has at least $10K income even if business is so so.. Another relative who used to subcon factory workers in the 90s makes $30K per month during those days supplying to panasonic etc Do you have other examples to share? Like property agent? hawkers? financial adviser?
  10. The current economic crisis has severely affected the financial institutions and soon will reverberate across other industries. I was thinking not all business will lose money during bad times, there'll still be some that will survive or even profit. Some of them I think include: 1) Food & Beverage - low to mid-end ones. People still got to eat. 2) Child care 3) Pawn shops 4) .... Please add to the list. Just some lazy afternoon discussions.
  11. http://www.asiaone.com/Digital/News/Story/...1106-98798.html Teen exposes Dad's porn DVD business online A former police officer's son, disappointed in his father's newfound illegal dealings, posted evidence of the older man's pornographic DVD business on his blog in a bid to expose the crime. The teenager, Joe (not his real name), wrote on his blog that first he sensed something was amiss when he saw his father and elder brother carrying large duffel bags in and out of the family home on an almost daily basis. The father and son duo would return home from their trips and bring the bags straight to the older son's room and lock the door. Joe's elder brother is under 18. Two months after their actions first roused his suspicions, Joe decided to find out for himself what was going on. He snuck into his brother's room while both men were not at home and found several large plastic rubbish bags on the bed. Joe opened the bags to find that they contained about 500 DVDs of pornographic films. Joe said that he also noticed a DVD player in his brother's room, and suspected that it was likely used by both men to test the DVDs. He also wrote that his brother would often make trips to Geylang, and suspected that these trips have something to do with the DVDs as well. To further support his claims, Joe also posted pictures of the pornographic DVDs he had found. Most of the DVD covers depict a naked Caucasian woman in various suggestive poses. Joe also claimed to have reported the matter to the police. Joe said that his father was a former police officer, and had served the country for more than 20 years. Now that his father has joined his elder brother in a life of crime, Joe found himself very disappointed in the both of them. He also added that while he was reluctant to tell his mother about his father's involvement in these criminal dealings, he suspects that his mother already knows what is going on. Although Joe felt that he did the right thing in exposing his father's crimes, he was worried for his own safety and asked the Netizens reading his blog for help. He also wrote that he was afraid of being implicated by the illegal dealings, as his brother might use his mobile phone to conduct 'business'. According to the law, anyone who owns or trades undertificed VCDs and DVDs can be fined a minimum of $100. Those who are found guilty of pocessing pronographic material will face a minimum fine of $5000, a sentence of up to six months in jail, or both. Distributors or parties found guilty of the intention to distribute pornographic materials can be fined up to $80,000, be jailed up to 2 years, or both. =========================== What a child. Left hand feed Right hand slap back.
  12. Have a German supplier in town so it was my turn to drive around on my car, a Skoda Superb 1.8T. My business partner, a loyal Toyota fan, never thought much about my wheels, but when the German supplier sat in my car, he was saying I was a smart guy to get the Skoda Superb, as he owns the current and previous VW Passat and some Audi's in his life. We went on to discuss about the Skoda and how they have VW + Audi parts in the car and the 1.8T engine was from the Audi range of 1.8T engines, from than my business partner was leaning forward and asking alot of question, so our German supplier went on to say this is the best value for money car you can buy on the road, really good and worth the buy. My friend was impressed and asked me more about the car, all I can say is, wait till you see the new one. My German supplier also mentioned that the new Skoda Superbs are available in Germany and the market of Skoda brands are growing, if not for the company VW Passat, he would have gone for a Skoda Superb II.

  14. Changes planned to allow 18 year olds to go into business Posted: 25 August 2008 1531 hrs SINGAPORE - Plans have been laid out to make it easier for young entrepreneurs to go into business. The Finance Ministry is proposing a delinking of the age of majority from the age of contractual capacity, reducing the age from 21 years to 18 years. The move is the result of feedback received by the Pro-Enterprise Panel that legal barriers that prevent young people from starting and conducting a business should be removed. To change will however require the amendment of a host of other laws, and Civil Law Act which the Finance and Law ministries have drafted amendments to. The two ministries are now seeking feedback on the Consultation Paper both have released with the draft Civil Law (Amendment) Bill. The consultation period ends on Friday, 19 September. If it really happens, then IMH and those counselling centres will have more patients and there will be more bankrupts....very few teens are as enterprising and risk taking like the ang mohs whereby when they fell down time after time, they will stand up again and again...asians, especially singaporeans are afraid of failure.

  19. Does anyone have any ideas on what forms need to be submitted for running a business? I personally thought that all you had to do was register the company and that was it. Recently, some peeps from some local council at Peataling Jaya asked my staff where a certain license for this and that was? Dunno what it is and didn't know I needed one! Told my staff that there would be a compound fine of RM 350, but they asked for a token sum for their own pockets and would turn a blind eye. I told my staff to take the fine and not to pass any money to them. Any advise anyone?

  25. I just watched the news a minute ago. There used to be a long queue of passengers at Seng Kang in the morning. But after the price increase, there was no passenger in the morning. Instead, there was a long queue of empty taxis. Keep up the good work, Singaporeans. You can help to decide the pricing of the taxi here.
