  2. For those who reads MCF but not straits times VW recalls Audi and Passat cars WOLFSBURG (Germany) - German car giant Volkswagen (VW) said yesterday it was recalling some 870,000 Passat and Audi models worldwide as a result of potential problems with the front axle. VW said in a statement it was offering owners of 870,000 Passat and Audi models a free check for possible damage of the rubber bellows of the front axle. Advertisement The company expects that about 1 per cent of the vehicles affected by the recall will need repairs, a spokesman said. It said the problem could lead to premature wear and, in isolated cases, to the failure of the bearing arm. The models affected were the VW Passat built between 1996 and 1999, the Audi A4 and A8 built between 1994 and 1999, and the Audi A6 built between 1997 and 1999. -- AFP, AP

  4. Just 1 hour ago, news stated that Honda and Mazda cars are being recalled for retrofitting for defects. Here is the report:: TOKYO - Japanese automakers Honda and Mazda said on Thursday they will recall for free repairs a total of 861,000 cars they have sold at home and abroad. Honda Motor Co Ltd notified the transport ministry it will recall 847,000 units of six models -- the Civic, Ferio, Hybrid, Fit, Stepwagon and Stream -- which were built between August 2000 and December 2001, a company spokesman said. Honda will fix a fault in the switch controlling the front headlights at a total cost of 5.77 billion yen (S$90 million), she said. The global total includes 190,424 units sold in Japan, which will cost 1.23 billion yen to recall and fix, she added. Separately Mazda Motor Corp said it will recall 6,559 RX-8 cars sold in Japan because of two defects. The company had identified a problem with the car's manual transmission system that can make a heat shield plate crack or come loose, and a defective shock absorber in the front wheels that can make components come loose while driving, a Mazda spokesman said. The recall will also affect roughly another 7,500 of the exported cars, bringing the worldwide total to about 14,000 units, he said. The recall covers vehicles made between February and August last year and this March. The spokesman could not say how much the recall would cost. Meanwhile Honda America will recall 240 Civic GX cars made in the United States between March 2001 and October 2002 to fix a problem with the power steering that might stop the steering wheel turning, according to documents submitted to the ministry.

  17. STOCKHOLM, Nov 29 (Reuters) - Volvo Cars, owned by Ford Motor Co (F.N), is asking 71,000 car owners to bring in their vehicles to check for petrol leaks into the engine compartment, the company's spokesman said on Saturday. Volvo, known for its safe family car image, had received reports of driveability problems due to such leakages, spokesman Bo Larsen told Reuters. He said Volvo was recalling all its 2003 and 2004 models of the V40 and S40 type, most of them sold in the United States, Sweden and Britain. "It (fuel) can leak into the engine area, but it's a very restricted area. Of course no car manufacturer is especially glad that there is a fuel leakage," Larsen said.Swedish newspaper Metro reported that the leakage into the engine area could cause fires, but Larsen said Volvo had not heard of any such incidents. Most of the car owners affected had already been sent letters asking them to have their vehicles checked at a garage. Volvo would install a securing clamp to prevent any problems, Larsen said.

  21. The world's coolest cars - 10 - 1 10 - Mini Cooper (BMC) 9 - Ford GT There's no argument; the new GT is so much better looking than the original GT40. Not because its profile is less compromised by racing necessities, nor because its surfaces and details are tight and tidy, but because when you think of a GT40, the car you are picturing in your mind's eye is actually the GT. And if that doesn't bag it for you, Ford will paint your GT any colour you want and that includes Gulf colours. 8 - BMW Z1 7 - Nissan 350Z 6 - Lancia Stratos Rally car gets supercar looks - shock, horror - and the toffs promptly prise open their wallets: Herbert von Karajan, dictatorial conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, had one in the colour of snot and it still looked glorious. Further proof that Marcello Gandini has designed most of the world's best looking cars and that rallying is wrong to suppose we're actually seduced by a Citroen Xsara in flared trousers. 5 - Mercedes-Benz SL 4 - Audi RS6 3 - Smart Roadster 2 - Land Rover Defender 1 - Aston Martin DB5 The suit, the drink (a classic Mint Julep for once) and, of course, Pussy Galore: even without the silver DB5 parked there behind him on Erno Goldfinger's driveway, Bond would always come out on top (and, I seem to recall, underneath, astride, and sideways on too). Goldfinger made Bond and it probably made Aston Martin too. For a certain generation ? and I'm talking about you and me ? the very definition of a car was about six inches long, gold, with revolving number plates, a roof and passenger seats that popped open, little machine guns that popped out the front and a funny old shield thing that popped out the rear. An attachment like that can never be broken or surpassed.
  22. Who knows where to install LCD screen in cars with reasonable price. By the way, is it approved by LTA or not?
  23. 2003 Econosport Sedans Comparison Test Introduction By Edmunds.com Editors Cheap cars that go fast. That's the premise behind every car in this test. It seems simple enough, but despite the fact that such a concept spawned the entire muscle car era of the 1960s, automakers are just now "rediscovering" the idea and once again building affordable cars that deliver serious performance. Unlike their ancestors, these modern-day hot rods sport half the cylinders, a third less weight and sophisticated computers to keep everything in check. Based on inexpensive economy cars, they're small in stature, but big on fun. Just last year we conducted this test with all the major players at the time and came away impressed with just how much performance you can get for around $20,000. Nissan's Sentra SE-R Spec V took first place for its blend of sizzling performance and a rock-bottom price. Barely a year later, competition in the segment has heated up thanks to the in-house tuning divisions of Dodge, Ford and Mazda. Dodge's Performance Vehicle Operations (PVO) took the aging Neon and transformed it into a turbocharged terror renamed the SRT-4. Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT) added two doors to its already hot Focus coupe to create the four-door SVT Focus. And finally, Mazda's Mazdaspeed division created the Mazdaspeed Proteg
  24. I was sure it was not one of ours...but then, like the weather, you could not be sure right? Reckless driving on ECP by 'rally cars' , ST Forum 11 August 2003 I WAS riding my motorcycle on the East Coast Parkway at about 8.40am on July 26 when a convoy of five cars, travelling at a very high speed, overtook me. The last car in the convoy was a green sedan driven by a young woman. She had three passengers and everyone in the car wore cream-coloured baseball caps. About a minute later, I noticed two cars coming from behind, also at great speed. One was a sedan while the other was a white sports utility vehicle. The green sedan driven by the young woman swerved into lanes of traffic, which was rather heavy, without any indication. She cut from lane one to lane three, then back to lane one. The white SUV, which I think was a Lexus R300, did much the same thing. Hoping to get the licence plate number of at least one of the cars, I tried to catch up but decided against it after realising that they were travelling way in excess of the speed limit. However, I did gather that the seven cars were taking part in an organised rally because they all had decals. The only word I could see on the decals was 'wheels'. Not only were the cars travelling at a dangerous speed but some of them were also being driven practically bumper to bumper. My question is, do the organisers of car rallies put a time limit on these events which causes participants to drive the way these drivers were doing? Are they even aware of the danger they cause? On at least one occasion, a vehicle had to brake suddenly when one of the convoy cars cut in front of it. Can the relevant authorities look into this matter and perhaps even involve themselves more in such events? This is not the first time I have seen such a thing happening and it is unlikely to be the last. Will it take a major accident before something is done about it? PATRICK ERNEST FERNANDO
