  2. Hi Bros! Need some advise on where to change shock absorbers for my W169 A Class. My car shock absorbers are squeaky when I go over humps. Car has done around 80,000km. I brought to C&C for regular servicing and they want to charge me $180 to check the shock absorbers (just to check and not do anything!). They also said my undercarriage could be in bad condition and the shock absorbers could cost up to $10K to replace - naturally I declined, sounds way too expensive. Any suggestions on where else I can go? Thanks in advance.

  8. http://www.autoblog.com/2015/09/01/infiniti-q30-interior-frankfurt/ Infiniti is supposed to debut the all-new Q30 hatchback at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, but as the show is still a couple of weeks away and the company has elected to release yet another image, we aren't sure there'll be all that much to see come Sept. 15. With that in mind, then, we give you the first images of the entry-level hatch's cabin, and they're, um, wow. We knew the Q30 had a lot in common with the Mercedes-Benz A-Class but as these images show, this is far more than a common platform. The steering wheel, instrument cluster, switchgear, and shifter are direct from the Mercedes parts bin. From the looks of the images, the Q30 will even have a Mercedes-style key. This might not garner much attention in the budget ranks – take the Scion iA and Mazda2, for example – but this degree of parts sharing in the premium market is sure to raise some eyebrows. It's also a rather bewildering move for Infiniti. The company is, in effect, selling a Mercedes-Benz to any new customers it attracts. That'll certainly make a Q50 a hard sell when it comes time for an upgrade. Now, in Infiniti's defense, there are some differences in the layout here. The triple nozzle-style HVAC vents have been replaced with a more conventional pair of outlets, and the instrument cluster hood extends over the built-in navigation screen. That design decision, in particular, will certainly appeal to critics of the tacked-on-tablet look offered by Mercedes. The analog buttons for the multimedia system have also been tweaked, with the result looking far cleaner than the mess of buttons offered on Mercedes' products (we wouldn't be shocked to see this layout arrive on a facelifted A-, CLA-, or GLA-Class in the near future, though). Beyond those changes, though, there are multiple Mercedes design hallmarks here, including the location of the controls for the seat adjustments. So the A class is undergoing for a facelift soon taking on new steering wheels and switches, and Mercedes throw all the old parts to Infiniti?
  9. SIA ordered to pay customer S$735 for downgrading ticket class An Indian consumer protection council has ordered the airline to compensate the customer for causing him “mental agony and hardship” by downgrading him from business to economy class without prior notification. File photo of a Singapore Airlines plane. (Photo: AFP/Miguel Medina) SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines (SIA) has been ordered by an Indian consumer protection council to compensate a businessman 35,000 rupees (S$735) for downgrading his ticket from business class to economy without prior notice. According to a report in New Indian Express, the businessman, Mr GVK Reddy, had flown on flight SQ528 from Singapore to Chennai on Apr 19, 2011. However, he was told at the check-in counter that his business-class seat had been downgraded to economy class. As compensation, the airline gave him a S$600 voucher – the difference in the classes’ ticket price. Mr Reddy protested but had no choice but to take the seat offered by the airline, the report said. He later filed a legal notice with the airline seeking compensation of more than S$104,000 for costs including damages, deficiency of service, and causing him mental agony and pain. In a written reply, SIA argued that Mr Reddy was the last person to make a booking for a business class seat and was also the last to arrive for check-in, by which time, the business-class tickets were overbooked. The ticket conditions also make it clear to passengers that they may not be able to travel in their chosen class due to overbooking, the report quoted the airline as saying. The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum of South Chennai noted that the downgrade, without prior notification, “clearly amounted to a deficiency in service”, the report said. It ordered SIA to pay the customer 30,000 rupees (S$630) as compensation for mental agony and hardship, and to pay 5,000 rupees (S$105) for the cost of the proceedings within six weeks, the report said. wow want to seek 104k...hahahhha..laugh die me!!! mental agony and hardship...WTF
  10. Beware, if you are thinking of flying with Qatar Airways. They have Boeing 787 Dreamliners (I think 30). The Economy class seats are incredibly cramped. We flew to London with Qatar and on 2 of the 4 legs, we had the Boeing 787. The flights Singapore to Doha QR 945, departing SIN at 0230 - Boeing 787-800 Doha to London Heathrow QR 011 departing DOH at 0550 - Airbus A340 (45 minute layover at Doha) For the return London Heathrow to Doha, QR 002 - departing LHR at 2130 - Boeing 787-800 Doha to Singapore, QR 938 - departing at DOH at 0700 - Airbus A350 (very new plane!) I made some flight review videos, if you are interested to see the cabin. Singapore to Doha https://youtu.be/HEAy1KHMVtw London to Doha https://youtu.be/_bkNZfvfFf4 On a more positive note, the rest of the experience was good. The new Airbus A350 and the older Airbus A340 product was good too. So, it is just this Boeing 787 product. Qatar Airways Boeing 787 Singapore to Doha This is the flight review video - https://youtu.be/HEAy1KHMVtw This was the very first leg, Singapore to Doha. The flight would depart SIN at 0230. By that time, we were all very sleepy. A picture of the departures that early morning. Fortunately, Changi Airport had some loungers where we could snooze a bit. The loungers were very popular though. That area of the airport was very quiet and you could look at some plants and even a small water feature. Boarding was smooth and departure was slightly early, which was good because our connection at Doha was 45 minutes and we were wondering whether we could make the connection. The flight from Singapore to Doha would take about 7 hours. Now, I begin my rant. They call the Boeing 787 the Dreamliner, but it is certainly no dream sitting in the Economy class. Why? The seats are awfully cramped and the legroom is crazily tight. Even my kids felt a bit squashed and they are small in size. The Boeing 787 in Economy is in a 3-3-3 configuration. I went into lots of detail about this point in my flight review video. But here are some pictures to illustrate my point. This picture shows you the legroom available and the infamous IFE box, which takes up some space. The remaining space in front of my can barely take my backpack, which is by no means big. This picture shows you my legs in that small space. Another picture showing you the cramped seat and legroom. I guess for a short flight, say 2-3 hours, it is still ok. But for a red-eye, it is a completely different proposition. Do watch my video as I show you more of the cramped seating and I also take a walk around the cabin and you can see for yourselves the seating situation. To be fair to Qatar, other than the cramped seats on the B787 (which you can appreciate is a big deal given that we spend 99% of our time in the seat during a flight), all other aspects of the flight was very good, if not excellent. International crew was attentive and very pleasant. Service was prompt. The IFE system was very modern. Shortly after takeoff, we were served with a sandwich snack. These were warm sandwiches as well as a nice piece of warm cake. They were delicious. You could have a full bar service with your sandwich, that was nice. Thereafter they turned off the cabin lights so that we could get some sleep. 2 hours before landing, they served a full meal (breakfast). We landed early, which was a relief. To my surprise, we didn't have an aerobridge. We had to be take an airport bus to the terminal. However, while on the bus, I noticed that there were many empty aero-bridges. Strange. Were they deliberately creating work for the buses? I don't know. Here is a picture taken while boarding the airport bus at Doha Airport. The ground crew were unloading luggage, especially those that required rapid transfer. Anyway, do watch my review video if you want to see more, including the cabin, the food and even the bus ride from the plane to the terminal at Doha. Qatar Airways Boeing 787 London to Doha, Flight QR2. This was the flight back to Singapore, via Doha, on our way home. We had a good holiday in London. Now, it was time to go home. Departure was from London Heathrow Terminal 4. I spent quite some time at the Observation Deck and made a number of videos, see this link - http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/u-k-ireland/1686930-viewheathrow-london-heathrow-terminal-4-a.html This is the flight review video. https://youtu.be/_bkNZfvfFf4 Gate 22 was the Boarding Gate. It was a short walk from the main terminal. Read this sign. Some planes parked at Terminal 4. We would be walking over to the other side for Gates 22-25. That would be our ride to Doha. Qatar Airways Boeing 787 Dreamliner, A7-BCK. Spotted this plane coming in. Air One. Airbus A320. I checked wikipedia which reported that this company has ceased operations in 30 Oct 2014. So this plane is now operated by Alitalia? Boarding was quick and smooth and we got to our seats quickly. Now, in my last report, I had already made a big deal about the cramped seat. That left me thinking, what else can I do to illustrate to readers just how narrow the seat is? An idea struck me, let's do a selfie. Check out this photo of me. I am seated upright, leaning back against the seat fully, with shoulders touching the seat. Look where my shoulders fall and look where my arms are, in this relaxed position. I am by no means a big guy. To be more specific, I am about 5"9 and weigh around 160 pounds. And that's how cramped the seat is for somebody like me. See also the video, where I did a video version of the selfie, just to make the point clear to all interested viewers. Alright, it would take 6.5 hours to Doha. In the air. The main meal was served and I chose the beef. It was pretty good. The meal came with this small piece of chocolate, which was very good. Fortunately for me, the load on this leg was light enough such that the seat in between me and the other chap on the other aisle seat was empty. Phew! Much more comfortable. At least I managed to catch some sleep. Woke up about 2 hours before landing. This was the breakfast snack, which was pretty good. All the snacks we had on Qatar were good. We were put in a holding position before landing and that got me a bit anxious since our connection was only 45 minutes. Anyway, I figured the next plane would wait for us (I hope!). I took this photo to show you a comfortable leg position. Obviously, such a position is not possible if the middle seat is taken. This would be the typical position for my legs if the middle seat were taken. You can see that it would NOT be comfortable at all, especially if you are trying to sleep! Despite the holding pattern over Doha, I think we still landed on schedule. Again, we had to be bussed to the terminal. Oh well, at least I had an empty seat beside me for this London to Doha leg. That made the flight very much more comfortable.
  11. One of my friend passed his driving two years ago and now wanted to take some refresher course. He found out that Volkswagen did provide a Class 3A Driving Refresher Course. May I ask MCF members anyone has experience with this centre and how good is the training from the Instructor? To learn from Driving Centre needs to be a member first but Volkswagen centre do not need.
  12. Went to the IT Show yesterday, intending to buy a 32gb micro-SD card for my Blackvue. Was told it is advisable to get a Class 6 card. But the price diff between Class 4 and Class 6 is huge. 32gb class 4 = $39 32gb class 6 = $79 The price diff is ridiculous. Didn't want to be a sucker. I put off the purchase. Did some research. Found out that Class 4 is good enough for HD recording. www.sdcard.org/developers/overview/speed_class/ I did an experiment. Took out the 4gb Class 4 micro-SD card from my Blackberry. Format it to install Blackvue firmware. Did a few minutes of normal recording. The video quality was good. No jerky recording. Everything looked good.

  15. In awe by this Soviet-era behemoth then probably due to both the book and film The Hunt For Red October but now if you invite me FOC from flight to lodging for a visit I would definitely say thanks but no thanks and give it a miss. Really impressed with these brave visitors but not sure if they brought with them a Geiger Counter each... Note the rusting interior and really how on earth a once formidable ballistic sub could end up in such a sorry state... In any case the days of these underwater giants are probably over and now the Russkies must be racking their brains how to "de-nuclearise" the reactors of these SSBNs. From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg..._submarine.html Posted on 10 Apr 2012 Step into the world's biggest nuclear submarine The Typhoon class submarine is the largest submarine in the world, measuring 170 metres long and 23 metres wide. STOMPer Zoolander, who has shared these photos with us, said: "Submarines have always fascinated me, not just by their sheer size, but by the fact that these massive vessels can stay underwater for months. "The Typhoon class submarine can carry 20 ballistic nuclear missiles. Only six of these vessels were built. Get on board one of them by clicking on the pictures in the gallery below.
  16. Which car would you choose considering both are priced approximately the same, although the XF is a class bigger than C Class. The XF OMV is ~50k, while C Class is ~33k, but XF is 6 years old model, C Class (W205) is new C Class is a good car, however, the high profit margin imposed by the dealer makes it a less attractive option. Anyone can provide opinion on Jaguar vs Mercedes reliability and maintenance cost?

  18. Never mind that COE premiums are skyrocketing - a small Mercedes has been replaced by a bigger Benz to become Singapore's top model. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class executive sedan is now the most popular car after the first nine months of 2013. This mid-sized saloon displaces another Merc, the compact C-Class sedan, which was the No 1 model in the first half of 2013, as it carried its momentum from being Singapore's most popular model in 2012. The E-Class's success can be attributed to its recent facelift. Called the "new" E-Class, it features a dramatically revised front end to align this usually conservative model with the three-pointed star's latest family look. "The makeover of the E-Class now appeals to both young and old buyers, and most of them view it as a brand new model even though it is already three years old," said the sales manager of a mid-sized dealership. At the same time, the attraction of the C-Class's 1.6-litre engine lost some of its lustre as the Category A small car COE premium soared and began consistently hovering near the Cat B big car premium. The sales manager added: "As the rising COE premium caused the C-Class to become more expensive, a few of those who were considering it looked to the new E-Class instead." The E200 model starts from about $240,000, while the compact C180 sedan is transacted at around $185,000. Mercedes-Benz remains Singapore's No 1 brand with year-to-date new passenger car registrations of 2,902 units (see table). This number includes both authorised and parallel imports but excludes taxis. But the BMW brand has managed to close the gap with its traditional rival. After nine months, BMW has notched up 2,889 units, or a difference of a mere 13 cars. In the first quarter of this year, the gap was more than 200 cars. The number of parallel imports for each brand is only about 160 to 170 units. Total E-Class registrations came up to 1,353 units from January to September 2013, while the C-Class tally is 1,086 units (see table). The pair of Mercs was followed by a pair of BMWs - the 5 Series with 1,026 units and the 3 Series with 948. Rounding up the top five is the Volkswagen Golf, which was introduced as a new model at the start of this year. Among the top five makes, Toyota is the only non-European - in fact, non-German - nameplate. The once popular Japanese and Korean marques slowed down in this high COE environment. After Toyota, the highest-ranked Japanese make is Mazda at No 7 with 470 new cars registered in the first nine months of 2013. It is followed by Nissan at No 8 with 466 units. A luxury make, Jaguar, is No 9 with 397 cars while Hyundai rounds up the top 10 with 378 units. But the Korean brand continues to dominate in the taxi segment, with a year-to-date registration of 811 cabs. From January to September 2013, only 17,102 new cars were registered in Singapore, down 19 per cent from the same period last year. Total new cars this year are on track to be the lowest in more than 15 years. Source: http://www.businesstimes.com.sg/premium/top-stories/mercedes-benz-e-class-no-1-20131028

  24. After six months in Singapore, Mr Oliver Andersch is charmed by the hawker fare. "First-class food," he cooed. But the Austrian has not been quite as impressed with the cleanliness and hygiene of the hawker centres. "Third world," he slammed. "They use the same cloth for everything - wiping away food, cleaning tables. This is disgusting," he said, shaking his head. It is his job to help make it better. He is Singapore's only "ang moh" (Caucasian) toilet cleaner. Although the 43-year-old holds the title of "cleaning excellence and development director" with cleaning company ISS Facility Services, he told The Straits Times: "I'm basically just an experienced cleaning guy." He trains his firm's cleaners to do their jobs more efficiently, with all sessions conducted one on one. Some 200 cleaners have gone under his tutelage.
