  6. No, we dont have miw here to provide the stinko that drives you away.... This is about real smelly stuff..... question: what's the worse stink you have even encountered?...... during NS days when everyone smells the same? or what? I havent encountered smell of dead meat / bodies, but the garbage truck that drives in front of me every few days on my way to work really puts me off..... But back to NS..... recruits' fiedl camp must be one of the smellest place...... If the mrt train picks up some passengers from 'certain' areas, the whole cabin smells like 'heaven'..... oh, the famous 'ccb' phrase.... has anyone ever experienced it???
  7. miw's new faces: ex-NTUCers, ex-SAFers, etc etc.... seldom do we see candidates from real heartland or 'small' businesses... the opposition candidates are mainly from the opposite backgrounds.... Question: why it's so? and who has more genuine compassions and identification with the masses? How does this reflect the true concerns of the miw? .....

  14. Feb 8, 2011 The surcharge menace WHILE more passengers may be choosing to book a taxi instead of flagging one down, I think it is presumptuous to attribute it to a stronger economy ("More book taxis in stronger economy"; Jan 18). I was back in Singapore recently for a short visit and without a shadow of doubt, it has become extremely difficult to flag down a taxi in the streets. Every time, I had to wait for at least 20 minutes to 30 minutes before I could get one. Many empty taxis zoomed past with the "on call" sign on, but none stopped at the taxi stand. Even those that were dropping passengers at taxi stands did not pick up new fare. On several occasions, I have seen rows of taxis waiting with engines idling at side roads with their "on call" signs on. One of those places is Queen Street. The taxi drivers are very smart. They know that if they ply the streets hoping to pick up passengers, it would be a game of chance. However, if they just parked at a street corner and waited for a booking, their chances would be far better. When the bookings come in, they can select a preferred one - for example, those going to the casinos or airport - and ignore those that they don't want - for example, those going to Tuas. And by waiting at corners like Queen Street, they know their chances of getting a fare go up exponentially. Orchard Road and Bras Basah are busy areas and cabbies are confident they will receive a booking within a couple of minutes. The reason cabbies prefer bookings over casual street fares is the multitude of surcharges they earn from taking booked calls. After having been away for two years, I was shocked to note, on my return home, how costly a taxi ride had become. For instance, one taxi ride cost $4.60, but the surcharges bulked up the total fare to $11.40. Isn't it bizarre that the surcharges add up to more than the actual ride cost? If a Singaporean like me is confused and annoyed, imagine what a tourist would be thinking? Most likely, that he has been ripped off. I can't recall any other place with such a convoluted taxi fare system. If we cannot live with a free-market system, let's switch to a full booking system like in New Zealand. The Land Transport Authority should be under no illusion that all is well and there is no need to fix the problem. Patrick Tan Think he came back fm M'sia. With the currency imbalance against the SGD, how to compare?
  15. Saw this car moving and stopping, moving and stopping at my car park checking cars which park at red lots yesterday. Saw two guys inside and I was wondering what they were doing. To my surprise, they were carpark wardens, checking on car which park on red lots. Nowaday, no need walk liao, all sit inside the car. These people must be earning big bucks, can drive car issueing parking fines. So guy, if you do not live at the block, do not park at red lot.
  16. Its the highest of the highest and they peg their prices to that? How about NYmEX crude which is much lower at USD88.8 now even WTI Cushing is lower at 87.96... Strange........
  17. im looking to upgrade from my current 15" to 17" tyres and rims but the promoter at autobacs told me that i will regret my decision and eventually might wanna downgrade back to 15" as he said that it will be very heavy on the car. anyone here upgraded to 17" on latio? hows the response? is the diff in power very big? bcuz i have considered this drawback but didnt think it will be affected that much.
  18. All 3 tires except one looks like this even after dry from washing. Whats the problem ah?
  19. Got carried away in another thread so as requested putting up a new post here. In the navy there are quite a few wordings/jargons very alien to civilians and even to folks from the army/air force. For example on board ships, left is port while right is starboard, toilet is called head, front is bow & back is stern. Anyone wants to share their experience in the navy? Even non-Singaporeans are welcome. As the old Yankee saying goes: Loose Lips Sinks Ships so please no confidential or even classified stuff like nav/weapon/radar/comm systems, operational details or other can-tell-you-but-have-to-kill-you information please.
  20. How come our petrol prices no drop??? All acting blur???
