  6. Mrs Lee, R.I.P. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1084739/1/.html Mrs Lee Kuan Yew dies at age 89 Posted: 02 October 2010 1933 hrs SINGAPORE : Madam Kwa Geok Choo - the wife of Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, and mother of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has died on Saturday. Mrs Lee Kuan Yew, age 89, passed away peacefully at home at 5.40 pm. A statement from the Prime Minister's Office said the wake is held at Sri Temasek, official residence of the Prime Minister located within the Istana grounds, from October 4-5. Visitors who wish to pay their last respects may do so on October 4-5 from 10am to 5pm. Members of the public may call 6835 6614 for any queries. A private funeral will take place on October 6 at Mandai Crematorium. The family requests that no obituaries and no wreaths or flowers to be sent. All donations will go to the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) Health Research Endowment Fund. Madam Kwa was one of 8 children. An outstanding student at Methodist Girls' School, she also topped the 1936 Senior Cambridge Examination for the whole of Malaya and Singapore. At Raffles Institution, she caught the attention of a young Lee Kuan Yew when she gave him unexpectedly stiff competition for a Queen's Scholarship. But academic rivalry aside, he knew he had found his equal, and his soul mate. Their relationship grew through the years of Japanese Occupation, and by September 1944, love had blossomed. When World War II ended, Mr Lee left to study law in England in 1946. But he was miserable until she joined him at Cambridge University a year later. The two married secretly on 23 December 1947. She had just turned 27, and he was 24. Mrs Lee said: "You can't explain these things ... He had tremendous aplomb, self-confidence, very jaunty, he was a handsome young man." When they returned to Singapore in 1950, they tied the knot again, this time with their parents' full knowledge. When Mr Lee got more involved in politics and became Singapore's Prime Minister in 1959, it was Mrs Lee and his younger brother, Lee Kim Yew, who built up and expanded Lee & Lee - the law firm all 3 had set up in 1955. Mr Lee once said his great advantage was that he had a wife who could be a sole breadwinner and bring the children up. That was his, quote, "insurance policy," which allowed him to play the role he did in Singapore's history. In October 2003 - Mrs Lee suffered a stroke while on a visit to London. Fortunately, she made a swift recovery and was again seen in public at her husband's side at community events, and on official trips overseas. And she was there when Lee Hsien Loong was sworn in as Singapore's third Prime Minister. Although she had shied away from a high profile, her contributions to Singapore had been most significant, and pivotal to its history. "If she weren't an influence, supposing I had married somebody else, I might have become a different person, not that I would be a different person, but the things that I would have been able to do, the kind of backdrop I would have had, family, support, would have been different," said MM Lee. - CNA /ls

  20. Very sad , (my son is a P3 student in PPS) my deepest condolences to the Neo family http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNew...ory_430456.html ________________________________________________________________________ NINE-YEAR-OLD Mindy Neo was so excited about returning to school after the one-week break that she slept early just so she could wake up feeling fresh the next morning. But the girl, who would have been 10 next month, never made it to class on Monday after an accident involving a van while she was crossing Buangkok Drive at about 6.45am. The Primary 4 prefect at Punggol Primary School was flung about 20m on impact and died in hospital two hours later. The 24-year-old Indonesian maid who was with Mindy at the time was injured and is now warded in Changi Hospital with head and back injuries. The accident is believed to have occurred when the red van turned right from from Punggol Road into Buangkok Drive. Mindy and her maid were using the pedestrian crossing at the time, although it is not clear if the traffic lights were in their favour at the time. Mindy's parents were distraught yesterday and her father, Mr Neo Hwee Choon, 43, was in tears when he spoke to reporters before her wake yesterday morning. Just last month, father and daughter composed a song - 'Teachers' Day Love Song' - on a piano he bought her recently. Mindy went on to record the tune onto CDs and presented them to her teachers on Teachers' Day. Mindy's death was also a blow to her principal, teachers and classmates, who described her as 'creative, intelligent and humble'. Police have arrested the 63-year-old van driver on suspicion of causing death through a rash or negligent act, offences which could see him jailed for a maximum sentence of five years and fined. The police are appealing for eyewitnesses and anyone with information should call the Traffic Police on 1800-547-1818. Read the full story in Wednesday's edition of The Straits Times. 21. After the much publicize Michael Jackson's death, on lesser fanfare is another legend among the guitar world. Rock, Jazz and guitar hero fans will be sad to know the passing of Les Paul. Even the guitar, named after him, the Gibson Les Paul, is also a legend by itself.. http://sg.news.yahoo.com/afp/20090814/tts-...ul-972e412.html NEW YORK (AFP) - - Les Paul, a virtuoso guitarist and inventor who shaped the sound of rock 'n roll, has died in New York state, Gibson Guitar company said. He was 94. ADVERTISEMENT Paul "passed away today from complications of severe pneumonia at White Plains Hospital in White Plains, New York, surrounded by family and loved ones," said Gibson, producer of the renowned Les Paul guitar. Gibson called Paul "one of the foremost influences on 20th century sound." First known as a brilliant guitarist, Paul went on to change the course of music, pioneering the shift from acoustic to electric guitar and inventing multitrack recording. Born Lester William Polsfuss in Waukesha, Wisconsin on June 9, 1915, Paul was a child guitar prodigy who dropped out of school at 17 to play with Sunny Joe Wolverton's Radio Band. He played jazz and hillbilly picking, made his first recordings in 1936, and in 1938 moved to New York to star on national radio. By his mid-thirties, Paul was one of the country's most sought-after guitarists in a career that saw him play alongside greats like Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong. Combining jazz, western swing and hillbilly sounds, he formed the Les Paul trio, a regular guest on Bing Crosby's hit radio show. His first number one with Crosby and the trio, "It's been a long, long time," topped a million sales. Late in his career, he recovered from ill health to perform regularly in New York. In 2005 he released a double-Grammy winning album, "Les Paul and Friends: American Made World Played," with electric guitar heroes including Keith Richards and Eric Clapton. His biggest achievements, though, were in the technical realm, where he helped pioneer solid-bodied electric guitars and multitrack recording, a technique allowing groups to record different parts at different times, then mix them together. A tinkerer from the time he was a boy, Paul's big idea came in 1940 or 1941 when he strung a flat board like a guitar and attached pickups. "The log," as it was dubbed, created an electronic signal that could be amplified and processed, opening a new realm to music. Gibson Guitars began making the Les Paul model in 1952 and the guitar soon became a rock music standard. Paul eventually held the unusual honor of being the only person to be inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the National Inventors Hall of Fame, and the National Broadcasters Hall of Fame. "I don't think any words can describe the man we know as Les Paul adequately. The English language does not contain words that can pay enough homage to someone like Les," said Dave Berryman, President of Gibson Guitar. "As the 'Father of the Electric Guitar,' he was not only one of the world's greatest innovators but a legend who created, inspired and contributed to the success of musicians around the world." Henry Juszkiewicz, chairman and CEO of Gibson Guitar, said "the world has lost a truly innovative and exceptional human being today." "His musical charm was extraordinary and his techniques unmatched anywhere in the world."

Scenario: Was travelling home as per normal at SLE.approaching Mandai exit, slowed down and dropped gear from 5 to 4.While the clutch is still depressed and slight braking and maneuvering the corner, out of sudden, the engine totally dies off! No power,no lights,no aircon and even worse, power steering is also lost! For a full 3 seconds,i was not in control of the car. Then out of a sudden, everything went back on and the engine restarted by itself!I thank God that my family is safe and nothing happened while i'm taking the corner. The question is,what causes it to happen?Battery is fine(less than 6 mths old),no professional ICE(juz radio HU),normal Pivot (blue) VS with grounding. No hardcore modifications done, only got SIMOTA carbon air filter. Can any bros here help me on this?I heard from a friend that there are Swift owners who experienced the same problem with me.What is the exact problem?I think i need to rectify it ASAP coz i always go up north and don't want anything serious to happen(touch wood!) Many thanks in advance
