  1. As part of Singapore's overall plan to achieve higher air quality standards, a tighter emission standard for in-use diesel vehicles will be implemented from Jan 1, 2014, as annouced at this year's Budget Deabate. All such vehicles will need to achieve a smoke opacity test result of 40 Hartridge Smoke Units (HSU) or lower during their mandatory vehicle inspections for road tax renewal. HSU is a measurement of the opacity of smoke that is emitted. The National Environment Agency (NEA) has been working closely with the authorised vehicle inspection centres (VICOM, JIC Inspection Services and STA Inspection) to alert owners whose vehicles show borderline results during their mandatory inspection, so that they may take the necessary actions to service their vehicles before Jan 1, 2014. The adoption of the revised smoke opacity limit will minimise smoke emissions from diesel vehicles plying Singapore's roads. A six-month grace period will be introduced for vehicles that have borderline test results, to give time for vehicle-owners to adjust to the higher standards. From Jan 1 to Jun 30, 2014, owners of diesel vehicles with smoke opacity test results between 41 and 50 HSU will be issued warning letters. Vehicles with smoke opacity test results exceeding 50 HSU will still be fined, in accordance with the current regulations. From Jul 1, 2014 onwards, owners of vehicles with smoke opacity test results above 40 HSU will be fined up to $5,000. Motorists should get their vehicles properly serviced or repaired if they fail the smoke opacity test. From Jan till Sep this year, there have been 5,809 enforcement cases against smoky diesel vehicles; 2012 saw 6,381, showing an increase every year. As such, NEA said it is committed to ensuring clean and safe air in Singapore. Stringent enforcement action against smoke emissions from motor vehicles, in tandem with the tightening of emission standards for diesel vehicles over time, is part of Singapore's overall plan to reduce domestic emissions of particulate matter and achieve higher air quality standards. Motorists can help to ensure cleaner air for all by practising good driving habits, servicing their vehicles regularly, and avoiding overloading their vehicles. http://ride.asiaone.com/news/general/story/tighter-emission-standards-use-diesel-vehicles#sthash.caczgvcG.dpuf

  3. Hi all, This morning had a shock while I was hitching 2 riders to work. Just entered KJE @ speed 80km/hr and the car suddenly judder + engine check light came on. The vibration continued for about 5 min and went off. However, engine check light still on. Brought to workshop and was informed that there was a misfiring logged. The workshop mechanic drove around but there was no issue. No significant loss of power or weird juddering. Driving a Mazda CX-3 1.5 diesel and on my 4th tank of Cnergy diesel (Toh Tuck). Previous 3 tanks also no issue. I also saw other diesel cars (Carens, Fluence, Scenic, Mokka) filling up at Cnergy. I thought diesel cars won't misfire? Any thoughts on this? Thanks

  5. http://www.nea.gov.sg/corporate-functions/newsroom/news-releases/year/2014/month/12/singapore-will-usher-in-euro-vi-emission-standard-for-diesel-vehicles-from-january-2018 Euro 6 for diesels coming in less than 3 months. Will this mean the end of pickup trucks, eg. Triton, Navara, Ranger? Anyone driving commercial vehicle experienced problems with diesel particulate filter so far and have to replace the whole thing? Costs thousands of dollars to replace.... becomes clogged with non-combustible ash (not soot) at 100,000 km. Will it be more economical to drive petrol commercial vehicles?
  6. Hi all, I just wondering if we can register a passenger van ( Merc Vito or the Renault) as a S-plate vehicle to ferry 10 of our family in comfort.. priority is towards safety for the family and comfort.. I asked C&C and they have the Vianos (8 seater), but too ex ($195K), but the salesman say can register the diesel version as S-plate and no need pay diesel levy ($6-9k), but the road tax at $4k a yr Any bros or sis have this same dilemma? Whats your best choice vehicle as a big family carry all? Thanks for reading and your kind response..
  7. Anyone with a Diesel car? Care to share your experience? 1. Where offers the best discount for diesel? 2. Any maintenance or upkeeping tips?

  9. Having trouble with Isuzu diesel engine with euro 5 std exhaust emission. To keep exhaust emission clean, the DPF filters out exhaust. But theis DPF need to regenerate bpwith high temperate to burn off the dirty soot. Now the regen function cannot cut in. Check engine and regen light activtaed on oinstrument panel. This is the down side with euro spec diesel unit. Some uses DPF some uses Ad-blue (ammonia related) But is there any one with similar experience with diesel engine exhaust DPF filters?
  10. Given a choice, which will you choose? One is a questionable gearbox. The other with unclear diesel future. Would appreciate any enlightenment. TIA
  11. I think there must be a engine internal oil leakage causing oil from somewhere? in the upper parts of the engine to very slowly leak down into the sump. But what could that be ? ? ? It's an Astra-G with a Isuzu 1.7 diesel, fairly standard/simple engine I think. It does have a turbo, and a EGR valve. There's no other faults or symptoms. The Haynes? book says I should measure the oil level 10 minutes after halting, so that's what I've done, and it's half a liter above min (or half a liter below max if you like) 10 minutes after halting. But if I then come back a couple of hours later, it's aprox half a liter above max ! ? ? I'm fairly sure it was not like that before, and this is my second Astra with this engine. Before this I had oil and filter change of course. Could it be one of the oil filter gaskets ? Or a not quite compatible filter ?. Also before this, I had a too high oil level so I sucked out a little bit using a break fluid vacum pump/hose through the dip-stick (simple and easy). And at the same time before this I had an EGR-error indication, so I had the EGR out (for the second time), cleaned it, tested it, and put it back in. If that was because of too much oil or just ordinary usage I don't know. It's quite a bit of work and I had to do it a couple of years before as well, so I'm generally taking care not to have too much oil on the engine. But I don't measure the volume I pour into it. I just fill it up and check the dip-stick. ... So maybe that's how I got too much. So now, I'm using the car with maybe half a liter too much, but if I check it 10 minutes after halting, it's just perfect. There's no other faults ! ...... Power and performance is o.k. / as normal, and coolant level is steady an nice,... there's no other symptoms that I know of. The level is always the same (except as mentioned). These Y17DT engines (of which this is my second) both had oil leakage from the cam shaft sealing (and possibly some of the other seals as well), causing the register belt to be soaked in oil (but still running though), so for both I had to change the seals, and thereafter I generally didn't have any problems with the engine. Except for the Astra-G version which had a seal in the generator as well (between the vacum pump and the generator) that was of course leaking as well, and this #¤%" EGR on the Astra-G, and the ECM needing replacement on the Astra-G,... but the engine itself is, apart from this, generally quite nice. By the way, also now (and not before),... there is oil long up the dip stick after taking it out, and I have to clean it lower it and pull it up again. I don't think it was like that before. ?. ............
  12. I did a forum search on 'Adblue' and no results came up. So I am starting this thread to share with you a recent Adblue refill experience on a rental Audi A6 Diesel Estate car, while on holiday in the UK. My family had gone to the UK for a driving holiday this winter. We rented from a company called SIXT, picked up the car at London Heathrow on arrival, and drove out of London immediately on the day we landed. In winter, hours with light were shorter so I had to maximise daylight time for all the driving I had to do. The plan was to go as far north as Glasgow and Edinburgh, before driving back to London. I had booked an Estate Car (so that we get more boot space for all our luggage). I had hoped to get the Mercedes E-class estate but they issued me with an Audi A6 Estate instead. No matter, since this was the car in the same category of rental. This is what the car looked like. It was quite long. The boot was very spacious, as with most estate cars. The car was almost brand new, with just over 3,000 miles on the odometer. Plenty of gadgets to play with, including a very useful Satellite Navigation system that brought us to our destinations efficiently. The car was roomy and the boot (or trunk) space was very good. We had plenty of luggage. Here is a video of the car, including the Sat-Nav system. Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't think that this model of car (Audi A6 Estate Diesel) is available in Singapore. Now, the point of this post is not just to show you the car, but to talk about my virgin Adblue experience, which will be the topic of the next post.

  17. With private diesel cars gaining popularity, I wonder if there are any diesel car owners that can share thwir experience in what kind of modifications that can be done to tune up their diesel ride to take full advantage over of the high torque nature of the engine?
  18. Hello seen and heard many diesel car ads lately, are they better in value? is the new tax structure cheaper than petrol for the same cc? thanks for sharing
  19. Hi bros, If pump caltex diesel. How much discount and use which cards maximize savings?
  20. Sources: http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/sales-of-diesel-cars-rising-at-fast-pace Diesel models have become the fastest-growing segment of cars, with interest fuelled by revised taxation, the carbon emission-based vehicle scheme (CEVS), lower running costs and an overall improvement in diesel technology. According to Land Transport Authority data, there are now close to 5,000 diesel-powered passenger cars on the road - up from fewer than 150 five years ago. With the quantum leap in growth, the diesel car population has now outstripped the cohort of cars that run on compressed natural gas (CNG) and is expected to overtake petrol-electric hybrids soon. There are now around 6,200 such hybrids and fewer than 2,000 CNG cars. After being largely ignored in the last several decades, diesel cars began to sway buyers in 2013 when a special tax for such vehicles was slashed for cleaner models. For Euro 5 diesel cars, the tax is 40 cents per cubic cm of engine displacement versus $1.25 for Euro 4. For those which did not meet Euro 4 emission standard, the tax was several times the vehicle's road tax. CEVS - with rebates and penalties pegged to a car's carbon emission - was also rolled out in 2013, and made more stringent this year. As diesel cars produce far less CO2 than petrol equivalents, they qualify for CEVS rebates more easily. A 130bhp power cap for Category A certificate of entitlement (COE) was also announced in 2013. As diesel cars tend to produce less power but more torque, dealers began offering more such models two years ago. And consumers have warmed up to them. Volvo agent Wearnes Automotive sold 52 diesel cars in 2013, 530 last year and 444 in the first half of this year. Peugeot agent AutoFrance said its diesel car sales doubled from 2013 to last year, and trebled from last year to this year. In fact, diesel cars now make up half of its total sales. Shipyard manager Avery Yeo, 47, said he bought a diesel Peugeot 5008 because he lives in Bedok and works in Tuas. "I clock at least 80km a day," he said. "I get 22.2km per litre with the 5008, compared to 16km for my previous car, a Toyota Wish." And since diesel is also cheaper at the pumps than petrol, Mr Yeo said "it's really worth it". The sums add up even for someone clocking a national average of 50km per day. A 1.6-litre petrol car would use around $4,000 of fuel a year, compared with $1,600 to $1,700 for a 1.6-litre diesel car. Both estimates are based on pump prices before discount. This fuel saving more than offsets the $763 premium in annual taxes the latter attracts, assuming it is a Euro 5 model. Retired pilot Leonard McCully, 71, however, was drawn to his Audi A6 Avant 3.0 TDI more for its performance. "With 650Nm of torque, it flies," he said. "In fact, when I drove it on the first day, my wife asked why I was driving so fast. "I've driven it to Phuket and it kept up with the (Porsche) 911s in the pack." Watch dealer Leslie Chang, 52, said even though his Mercedes-Benz C200 diesel attracts more than $4,000 in annual taxes (because it is Euro 4) and "is a little noisy when idling", he still enjoys it. He has done laps around Johor's Pasir Gudang race track, and the car performed well. Plus, it has a "feel- good factor" because of its low fuel consumption and carbon output. Nanyang Business School adjunct associate professor Zafar Momin said diesel cars are even gaining a foothold in the US, a predominantly petrol market. In Singapore, Mr Momin attributes diesel's meteoric rise to a host of economic reasons. But the biggest one, he said, was the power cap for Category A COE. "From a pricing standpoint, diesel models became much more attractive than the petrol versions that had been moved to Cat B," he said, adding that brands such as Volvo, Citroen, Peugeot and Renault "have clearly benefited".
  21. US found out VW had been cheating in their EPA pollution test using a special ECU s/w setting in their diesel TDI engines. During test, TDI will auto set to "test mode" and run in low emission alogothim. Once out of the test setting (on dynamo) and on the road, the engine will revert to normal operating mode with over 40x the emission legal limit in US. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-09-19/volkswagen-emissions-cheating-found-by-curious-clean-air-group. VW stock dropped nearly 20% over 30% on NYSE on Mon when this was published early this week.
  22. What happen if I accidentally pump about 9L of diesel into my tank but after that I pump about 42L of petrol to dilute it? I got distracted and luckily the pump attendant came and stop the pumping immediately if not I think my whole car will be full diesel.. Sighzzz... Hope nothing happen.. :(
  23. hi guys .. anyone own or testdrove the above before ??? any comments ..please
  24. I'm considering taking the untrodden path of diesel powered vehicle, and one of the more attractive propositions out there is the Jaguar XF diesel. Top speed: 230 kmh Acceleration: 0-100 kmh in 8.5 seconds Fuel consumption: 18 km/l CO2 emissions: 149 g/km Engine: 2.2 litre four-cylinder turbocharged unit, 190 horsepower (PS) and 450 Nm. Transmission: ZF eight-speeders Of course, there's the usual concern regarding diesel fuel quality in our neighbouring country, and the famed reliability issues which accompany every Jaguar model. Detractors aside, what the general opinion in owning this car?
