  1. http://www.catholicnews.sg/index.php?optio...3&Itemid=67 My dear brothers and sisters, As we approach the 2011 General Election, I wanted to share with you my thoughts on the relationship between Church and State and highlight to you the importance of taking an active role in the political process. When Jesus returned to Jerusalem, he was greeted first by adoring crowds waving palm branches, and then, as we know, the mood turned. People became suspicious of this Man who was speaking against the establishment. When he was asked, hypocritically, by some Pharisees whether it is lawful to pay taxes, Jesus referred to a coin with the image of Caesar on it and said,
  2. Some inspiring quotes for this GE, mostly stuff that don't really happen here, but may it happen someday. Taken from Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President of the US I have the consolation of having added nothing to my private fortune during my public service, and of retiring with hands clean as they are empty. The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers. The will of the people is the only legitimate foundation of any government, and to protect its free expression should be our first object. No government ought to be without censors & where the press is free, no one ever will. All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. When governments fear the people, there is liberty. Vote wisely
  3. Title : GE: PAP recognises concerns of all segments of society, says PM Lee By : Date : 04 May 2011 1137 hrs (SST) URL : http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1126683/1/.html SINGAPORE : The People's Action Party (PAP) feels it has not talked enough about the needs and concerns of the middle class and the young people in Singapore in the current election campaign. Hence its secretary-general, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, said he has decided to focus his messages about these segments of Singapore society over the last two days. Speaking to the media after meeting residents at the Ang Mo Kio MRT and Bus Interchange on Wednesday morning with his GRC team-mates, Mr Lee stressed that it was not to address concerns of vote-swing. He added that any voter would have to weigh carefully how he was going to vote, but the PAP must try to reach everybody in the country and ensure that this was an inclusive society. Mr Lee emphasised that the party looks after all segments of the population, whether young or old, middle class or low income. He said: "Not every policy will benefit everybody equally, but if you take the whole bundle over time, then I think nearly everybody in Singapore has benefited considerably from them. "But apart from having the results of the income tax cuts or CPF or GST offset, it is also important for us to signal that we recognise people's concerns, understand what they are anxious about and we have a sense of what they are thinking and what they would like to see Singapore be and we empathise with you and we connect with you." The prime minister was asked about his move at the lunchtime rally on Tuesday to apologise for some mistakes which the government had made - such as over the Mas Selamat escape and incidents of flooding along Orchard Road. Mr Lee said the reaction to his apology has been good. He said the party had considered it carefully and it was a suitable message to Singaporeans at this stage of the campaign so that the voters can focus their minds on key issues like education and housing. Mr Lee feels that the audience has received it well and he hopes Singaporeans too would likewise. The five-member Ang Mo Kio GRC team is being opposed by a team put together from the opposition Reform Party and Singapore People's Party. Elaborating on his point of the opposition borrowing candidates from one another, the prime minister said this showed a lack of seriousness and commitment. PM Lee said: "When you join a party, it is a serious commitment. You study what the party stands for, what sort of reputation has it got, what is it that it's fighting for, what are your own values and beliefs, and ideals. "And you choose a party which approximates that, and you join, and then you fight on that basis. It doesn't mean that you are 100 per cent on one ideology ... everybody in the PAP believes in integrity, service to the people, in putting the nation first, in growing our economy. "There are certain fundamentals which you share to join the party and that are what the party needs. If you can just change party overnight, then you are really not serious about these basic things - what are you in politics for, what are you trying to achieve other than trying to become an MP or NCMP. "And that cannot be the objective of being in politics. It must be to do something good for the people. If you just swap around like this, it means that you are not serious." - CNA/al
  4. I am a supporter of a non-existent party. I am a Singaporean who used to live overseas, but came back to serve NS and back here for my family. Found my love for singapore the longer i stayed here. Yes, I do own sports cars if you read my previous post. It was not because of the present government that I got a job and buy my cars. Like most singaporeans, coming from a poor home, growing up without my parents around in a rental flat. I was too young to know the value of money then. My Grandparents are the closest i've got. My mum had to save $$$ to send me overseas and that is how i learn the value of $$$ when i was living all by myself in my teens. Having watched the old videos of our Government from the 80's to present. Many years ago, The Government has our interests at heart. They listen to us, they helped us grow and mold us as people of Singapore. Back then, everything was affordable and life was simple. Times, have changed in the last 10 years. Our plights have been ignored to basic needs and the assistance is not enough to fill the stomach of those unable to work. Those people who are unable to work are Elderly, Sick and the uneducated aged. Are those in prison better fed than them? Is freedom a high cost? The people who dressed themselves in white, i feel they are so distant now compared to the 80s. They said they need an increment of pay to attract those talents from private sectors to Govt sector. I feel that they have gotten the meaning of Government all wrong. You are the Government because you have the passion to drive your nation and people forward. Your 1st and foremost thought is for the people. If people are joining the Government for the sake of money, where are the people and nation in their hearts? People like Obama and other Presidents from USA, if they need help in businesses and advise who do they turn to? They look for Donald Trump and Bill Gates for help and The CITIZENS help voluntarily. If the nation and people are healthy, automatically businesses are healthy. If once the business is healthy, you get job opportunities and you grow economically. Isn't this what our Grandfather Lee Kwan Yew did before? I am not talking about negatives of what he did or done.... but he got the simple formula right to get the nation going the right way. I would say, the government has forgetting its people and Singapore's resource is always People! About property, I am staying in Ghim Moh. How is the property value going to drop if our MP is not PAP? We are living near ORCHARD road. Property prices goes up because of DEMAND and someone claim he did it. If someone sells, and no one wants it, doesn't the price come down? What if people wants to live within 10mins drive to Orchard, wouldn't the price be high? Makes sense? Honestly, now I want a Coalition Government. I love having the PAP because they have good business sense and having lots of business Allies world-wide. It is this business sense that us Singaporeans have jobs and growing economy. At the same time, I love having other people in Parliament to speak for us because they have us in their hearts. They know our hardship and they know the value of HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH. Our present government says, it has giving alot, but what is ALOT? Is it enough for us? Tan Jee Say has credentials... I would love for him to speak for us when Singapore is making a decision to invest. We are people we do make mistakes, we do say sorry. But even though we are angry, our mind must still make sense and make cents. Thank you WP and SPP for speaking on our behalves all these years. About over-spending in the YOG... Honestly, is doesn't matter how much the amount is at least, Singapore has volunteered holding THE FIRST world stage event not knowing the actual cost. Is a magnificent achievement. Is because of this unnecessary spending, we have made more international friends to do business with in the present and future. I would love to see fairness to the people and businesses. No more cartel pricing, no more 1 driver, but a co-driver. We need FT in Singapore, but not those who are stealing our jobs. I still have so much more to say. Not sure if you guys would love to read what I have to say. But I would love to read your point of views. Thank you for reading my fellow singaporeans.
  5. Anyone stopped watching tv for election updates ?
  6. This morning I found only People Avoiding Party posters on lampposts in Ang Mo Kio. What happened to those put up by others?
  7. Elections are coming .................. While walking down the street one day a MP is tragically hit by a truck and dies. The MP's soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance. "Welcome to heaven," says St. Peter . "Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you." "No problem, just let me in," says the MP. St. Peter says, "Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then ..... you can choose where to spend eternity." "Really, I've made up my mind ... where I want to be in? It's easy ... Heaven !!! " says the MP. "I'm sorry, but we have our rules", replies St.Peter. And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle .... of a .... green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him. Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich ...... at the expense of the people. They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne. Also present is the Devil, who really is a very friendly guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that before he realizes it, it is time to go. Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises... The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him. "Now it's time to visit heaven," St Peter s ays. So, 24 hours pass with the MP joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and the 24 hours in heaven passes by and St Peter returns. "Well, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now which will you choose for your eternity?" St Peter asks. The MP reflects for a minute, then he answers, "Well, I never would have thought it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be happier and better off .. in hell." So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above. The Devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. "I don't understand," stammers the MP. "Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there's just, ....... a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened ?!?!?" The Devil looks at him, smiles and says, ............. "Yesterday we were .......... campaigning ......... !!! " " But ............ Today ............. you voted !!!."
  8. This year's election is supposed to be very exciting with strong opposition coming from all walks of life. I have been following the news everyday on online especially. But I realised something... The moment I step in to office, no one talks about it. Why....b'cos 90% of my colleagues are either on Employment Pass or Permanant Residents. They are the ones which our beloved ruling party has been embracing as Foreign Talents!!! Sometimes I really feel like I am working outside Singapore where we are the minority group.
  9. to the above question: To me, this is an unfair statement Firstly, opp are not paid 15K/mth to manage the constituency. They have their own jobs and livelihood to take care of. What can we expect them to do, lobby for policies actively? Anything non-elected opp do is out of their own free will and free time... they may be doing something, or not doing anything.. we cannot make any judgement on that... and hey.. they are not even "elected MPs"!! Elections is the best times to focus and reach out to the masses.. which other time can give one so much coverage? Secondly, media gives priority to the ruling party, so what can we expect? Thirdly, the Ruling party should be the one that is present, as they are earning 15K/mth to take care of our constituency, I, for one, have NEVER seen my MP or heard about the MP coming around or reach out in my neighbourhood...
  10. Please kindly feel free to s c r e w ed me with your opinion 1. Why we assume that the ruling party has the right formula and Singapore is successful provide the OPPOSITION DOES NOT GET IN? WHY DOESNT IT OCCUR TO US THAT IF OPPOSITION HAD GOTTEN INTO PARLIAMENT EARLIER, SINGAPORE MAY EVEN BE MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN IT IS NOW. 2. Is it right for TPL (I dont know what to say) to get into parliament automatically without a fair fight to proven her self worth while there is a HIGH CHANCE THAT HONORABLE CITIZENS LIKE DR ANG YG, LOW TK, CSM, VW, NICOLE SEAH CANNOT GET IN? 3. Why the noise about george yeo, when the ruling party gambled using HIM in the GRC to calculate their chance of winning? If he loose, we cannot blame the opposition party as the people have spoken? 4. CST - he is a living national hero, who sacrifice and fight for us Singaporeans, why should we allow him to win? Singaporeans have already given MM face by giving him a walkover, CST on the other hand, similarly like JBJ can be called among the founder of the opposition party, shouldnt we allow him to be in parliament as a symbol of democracy. How unfair, we have army general who kee cheiw and TPL who i dont what to say into parliament? Who do we respect and think who carry weight? 5. Why question about people's qualification by MM? MY criteria - is the will and heart to serve the people of Singapore. 6. If the ruling party is so popular, why is it that they have to organise tours from RC to their rally site? In other countries this act alone is wrong. Please add if you think there are valid questions?
  11. Saturday April 30, 2011 2011 election being fought on the net INSIGHT DOWN SOUTH By SEAH CHIANG NEE http://thestar.com.my/columnists/story.asp...%20Down%20South Meet the Facebook Generation. If this election throws up a surprising outcome, it is due to the movement. Over 45% of Singaporeans own an FB account, making the island republic one of its biggest users. FOR years, cynical Singaporeans who disliked government-controlled news have been forming themselves into a sort of digital sub-community. They often ignore what the government says about policies, preferring instead to talk to each other about them online, a sad development for the authorities. Large numbers of these better-educated Singaporeans have long lived within this sub-culture where the government plays little or no part. They turn away from government press releases or Singapore newspaper reports which they consider as propaganda. So far, the authorities have not found a way to engage the community, let along win it over. It is crucial because Singapore
  12. anyone know which date is earliest opp party rally? maybe we can use this thread to update everyone who wish to attend.
  13. http://wp.sg/wpge/volunteer/ Or for NSP?
  14. Hi, I have a question for the election experts. Hopefully someone can enlighten me. Let's say I run as a candidate in Tanjong Pagar and the old man is leading the PAP. Halfway through the process, the old man ups lorry. Will I win the election by walk-over? If I recall correctly, a candidate, proposer, sub whatever nonsense they use to quantify their paperwork and salary, that is missing immediately voids the team fielding the candidates for the election. So what happens in the above scenario?
  15. Chee Soon Juan delivers SDP's election message in Hokkien
  16. pls read it before jumping to conclusions on the title http://flaneurose.blogspot.com/2011/03/whe...ll-be-time.html
  17. The chance of us seeing no opposition after this election very high. Why leh? 1. New Citizens We all know the number of new cirizens must have gone up by a hundred thousand or two since the last election. These voters naturally are pro incumbent party. At least 90% will vote for the party that gave them the chance to come here. The number of eligible voters is only about 2M. In other words, the incumbent can afford a 10% swing in support easily and they will still win the majority. Probably their overall popular vote percentage may drop but it will be between 58% to 63% thereabouts. This can continue and 5 years later, the game will still not change. Just bring in more new citizens then those who swing to the opposition. 2. Singaporeans are afraid Afraid of what, I also dunnoe. Some are afraid of change. Some are afraid their votes can be traced. Most are just afraid of uncertainty cos a substantial percentage of us are employed in either organisations or companies that somehow is linked to the govt. Just add up the SAF, Home Team, Civil services etc etc. At least 300,000 I reckon. Would you risk a career that offers security and some sort of "guaranteed road to riches". Think not. 3. Most just like to complain We just KPKB. Short memory wan. 30 years of nation building and we have all been programmed to work towards the greater good. In other words, some will fall by the wayside. As long as it is not you, you probably wont care. If you do, you just KPKB and sleep over it. There are of course many more reasons but I guess you guys can add to the above. In any case, anyone wanna form a betting pool? I wager clean sweep for the incumbent this coming election. The above are purely my personal opinions and are just meant for tock coc k sing song session on a boring evening. Maybe some of you guys have a different perspective.

There are 12 single member divisions. At Sengkang West, it is Dr Lam Pin Min while Hougang is likely to be contested by new candidate, Desmond Choo. At Bukit Panjang, veteran Dr Teo Ho Pin is likely to be fielded. Pioneer is likely to be contested by another PAP veteran, Mr Cedric Foo, while Senior Minister of State Grace Fu will stand in Yuhua. 21. This calls for a look at the last GE from our neighbour up north.. which always reminds me of this song And bears alot similarity with what we have now..
  22. If elections were held today, who will you vote for? Note I never break down the opp party by name since if elections were held now you would be lucky if you could vote, not to mention choosing the party of your choice.
