  4. http://www.tremeritus.com/2014/03/04/puthucheary-scoffs-at-nmp-liens-free-education-idea/ Puthucheary scoffs at NMP Lien’s free education idea March 4th, 2014 | Author: Editorial Dr Puthucheary Nominated Member of Parliament Laurence Lien, CEO of the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre (NVPC), proposed in Parliament yesterday (3 Mar) that the government guarantee free basic education for all Singaporeans between 3 to 18 years. Mr Lien said in his speech (‘NMP Lien: Every generation is a pioneer generation‘): Primary and secondary education is essentially free in Singapore. Pre-school education is receiving substantially more subsidies. Can we not simply guarantee free basic education for all between 3 to 18 years? For pre-school, a universal voucher can be provided to all children, set at the median fees charged by all operators. Tertiary education fees can be chargeable in the form of a loan whose repayment is a proportion of what the graduate actually earns in the workforce. Those going into lower paid professions, like in the nonprofit sector, can receive loan forgiveness if they are unable to make full payment at the end of their loan tenure. However, Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC MP Janil Puthucheary poured scorn on Mr Lien’s proposal to offer free basic education to Singaporean children from 3 to 18 years old. The Malaysia-born Dr Puthucheary, who famously equated saving childrens’ lives in KK Hospital as a pediatrician to serving National Service, said: I listened in interest to Mr Lien’s suggestions. He called for free education while acknowledging that much of the education is currently at very low cost. Free education is not free. It’s very, very expensive to the society as a whole, to those societies that deliver free education, there is a very high taxation burden and it drives behaviour for individuals to seek private education. And so the access to opportunity differentiates across the income spectrum. What is the outcome? The outcome we need is equality of opportunity for all. And free education, will it improve the equality of opportunity by giving similar access to everybody, I am doubtful of that. Dr Puthucheary did not explain how a high tax burden in some first world countries is driving citizens of those countries to seek private education. Dr Puthucheary sought further to rebut Mr Lien: He (Mr Lien) also called for the envisioning of possibilities and talked about the reality on the ground. I have to say I take umbrage at this. In 1995, 99% of the time the reality on the ground is that Singaporeans work hard, they’re rewarded for their hard work and they do envision the possibilities. They do have pride in the work that they do and they have self confidence that they can build a better future for themselves and for their families. I’ve one family I know very well through my MPS and my work on the ground. The gentleman is quite unwell and requires regular help at one of the hospitals. He’s unable to work at this point in time. His wife works to support the entire family. But they envision the possibility when their daughter receives the educational merit bursary award. They know that their daughter has possibility, has opportunity, has equality of access to that opportunity and they can see the future. The lady in question has pride and self confidence in her ability to maintain and provide for her family. Mr Laurence Lien is a grandson of the late Lien Ying Chow, founder of Overseas Union Bank (OUB) which later merged with United Overseas Bank (UOB) after the government-linked Development Bank of Singapore (DBS) tried to make a hostile takeover bid for OUB in 2001. At the time, the elder Mr Lien did not want DBS to acquire OUB so he decided to merge with UOB. On 1 August 2001, DBS was forced to apologise and pay compensation for a document condemning the merger of UOB and OUB. The DBS document said that there was likely to be “decision paralysis and infighting” if the merger went ahead. The act of UOB buying OUB was “designed to keep family control intact without regard for shareholder value,” and OUB shareholders “should chastise its board and management”. The document also referred to a “board and management team composed of family and friends”. Later, DBS chairman S Dhanabalan said he was “angry and upset” the statements had been made and accepted responsibility although the document had not been prepared by his bank. DBS apologised to UOB and OUB and paid $1 million to both banks. Both UOB and OUB accepted Mr Dhanabalan’s apology and the retraction of statements, and donated the $1 million dollars compensation to charity.
  5. Hi all I am kinda pissed that while other countries broadcast matches fer free we have to pay $112/-. I am already on a VPN and watch Hulu & Netflix movies fer free on my tv and devices. The VPN I use is PIA and fer a cheap $3-5 a month (depending on your plan) I get unrestricted access to servers and websites in US, UK, etc. But you can use any number of VPNs (Hide My Ass, Freedom etc). I have unsubscribed from Starhub fer over a year now and will never ever go back to them. And PIA allows me to load the VPN on upto 5 devices so I can use this on any PC or Laptop at home or on the run. The same concept applies if you wana watch worldcup fer free on your big TV. All you need to start off with is a VPN plan. You can refer to the below also for more details: http://www.flashrouters.com/blog/2014/03/19/how-to-stream-world-cup-2014-live-streaming-live-from-anywhere/ I loaded PIA VPN on my laptop and then sign up fer free for a Hulu & Netflix account and hook the laptop via HDMI to my HD TV. The picture quality is good enuff. Occasionally (very occasionally) there is a slight lag for HD movies but hey I am paying $5 a month so I wont complain. If there are any other bros who are already on a VPN do share your experiences so everyone can gain easy access to good content.

  16. LTA noted that ‘many commuters want to work and communicate while on the move’ in the Land Transport Master Plan. But free Wi-Fi service will not be available on trains during the trial. Come the middle of next year, commuters on the North East Line (NEL) can expect to have free Wi-Fi access on the go, under a trial by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) that is aimed at improving connectivity. The initiative was revealed in the Land Transport Master Plan 2013 released last week, with the LTA noting that “many commuters want to work and communicate while on the move”. The service would also be available on “major interchange stations”, but not during train rides. In response to TODAY’s queries, an LTA spokesperson said: “LTA will test the viability of Wi-Fi at underground stations on our MRT network to enhance wireless connectivity for commuters while (they are) waiting for trains. From mid-2014, we will carry out a trial by implementing Wi-Fi at stations along the North East Line and at major interchange stations.” The authority, however, did not specify what the major interchange stations were, adding that “more details will be provided when ready”. The trial is part of the LTA’s push for smart travel. In the master plan, the authority also revealed plans to improve its MyTransport.SG smartphone app in the next few years by rolling out services such as real-time bus and train-platform crowd updates to help commuters avoid congestion. Many countries in Asia have already started providing free Wi-Fi on their transport systems. Hong Kong’s Mass Transit Railway recently extended free Wi-Fi hot spots to all its stations, while the Tokyo Metro introduced a free Wi-Fi trial at 30 of its train stations this year. Members of Parliament (MPs) on the Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) for Transport and experts TODAY spoke to generally welcomed the trial, noting that smartphone connectivity is increasingly becoming part of a good travel experience. Pointing to a recent report on the decreasing number of free Wireless@SG hot spots, former journalist and technology blogger Alfred Siew said the provision of additional free hot spots “is always good”. “But ... it might be good to extend it to inside trains, because that is where commuters spend most of (their) time when they are travelling,” he added. But this would “cost more or take more time to wire up all the tunnels, compared with just wiring up the stations”. Regular NEL commuters had mixed reactions to what some termed as a “value-added” service. Marketing executive Elvis Chiu, 29, felt the LTA should first focus on ensuring transport operators get the basics, such as train reliability, frequency and customer service, right. “Meanwhile, the telcos and train operators can work together to improve the signals and bandwidth underground,” he said. However, senior executive W Lim, 27, welcomed free Wi-Fi on platforms, given spotty 3G service on the NEL. She said: “It can be quite frustrating when whatsapp-ing friends to confirm meeting places, so free Wi-Fi will certainly help on occasions like these.” Tourists like Ms Sophie Hennessy, 26, from Australia, said free Wi-Fi would be helpful in accessing navigation apps. “With free access, I can search for directions to reach my destination,” she said. Ang Mo Kio GRC MP Ang Hin Kee, who sits on the GPC for Transport, said the LTA must ensure the effort is not a “cosmetic one which cannot support, say, more than 50 people logging on”. He added that the service was unlikely to lead to a fare increase, since the investment is made by the LTA and not the transport operators. 19. Link Pretty serious crash by the looks of it. Think it's a BMW 7 series, more damage probably because the tree hits right at the doors not the b pillar( well speed does play a factor here). Totally different compared to the official "pole crash test" where the roof didn't bend that much.
  20. SINGAPORE: Singapore citizens and permanent residents will get free entry to all national museums and heritage institutions from May 18. They include Asian Civilisations Museum, National Museum of Singapore, Peranakan Museum, Singapore Art Museum, Singapore Philatelic Museum, Malay Heritage Centre and the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall. The National Heritage Board (NHB) is hoping to draw in the crowds with new hands-on activities and story telling is one way it hopes to engage the visitors. In the past 10 years, it has seen a three-fold increase in visitor numbers from 1.1 million in 2003 to 2.8 million in 2012, and NHB said increasingly, visitors want to do more than just walk around the museums. Director of corporate communications at NHB, Cheryl Koh, elaborated: "Actually museums are really interactive places. We have grown to become more engaging as well. We are no longer just dusty places that we put dusty artefacts around." This year's Children's Season exhibition will coincide with the start of free entry. Making traditional snacks like Ang Ku Kueh is one of the highlights of the Children's Season exhibition. There will be many more hands-on activities at the National Museum of Singapore. Other museums will hold exhibitions and activities for children till end-June. Since the government announced plans for free entry during the Budget this year, the National Museum has received about 20 per cent more enquiries from the public about its programmes. On average, it gets about 30 calls a month. Ms Koh said NHB isn't setting visitor targets but it is closely monitoring visitors' response. "In engagement, we will see from the numbers, when people come and sign up for our programmes when they visit our museums. We will then see whether they are engaged. If they don't sign up for programmes, our programmes have no sign ups at all, then we will know that we are not moving in the right direction and perhaps we will have to do a tweak," she said. With free entry, NHB said it hopes more will use museums as a platform to bond and reflect on Singapore's heritage and history. - CNA/fa http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singap...4.html?cid=FBSG
