  2. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/asia/genting-highlands-accident-6-dead-malaysia-tourist-van-3262986?cid=FBcna In images of the accident's aftermath circulating on social media, the badly damaged van can be seen resting against a barrier on a downhill section of the road. Another photo shows six body bags laid out on the road behind an emergency vehicle. RIP!
  3. Huge Genting Highlands Landslide Blocks Major Road, Affected Route Temporarily Closed source: https://mustsharenews.com/genting-highlands-landslide/ Major Road In Genting Highlands Blocked After Huge Landslide Genting Highlands is a popular tourist destination for many Singaporean families — its fun theme parks and cool weather is a treat for everyone. However, it seems like those planning to head up there soon for a holiday might have to make some changes to their plans. A major landslide has hit Genting Highlands on Tuesday (5 Nov), cutting off part of a major road. This blocked off the route to a nearby hotel and apartment building nearby, reports New Straits Times. “Hundreds of holiday-goers” were left helpless due to the landslide, according to NST. Fortunately, nobody was injured. Rained for 3 hours prior to the Genting Highlands landslide Videos have surfaced online showing streams of mud and rocks flowing down the mountain. It had been raining heavily for about 3 hours prior to the landslide. In the video, a man shouts for the bus to close its doors as it reverses away from the landslide. Both lanes of Jalan Genting-Amber Court were blocked off. While the First World Hotel is in plain sight of the drivers, they are unable to access it due to the landslide. Clean-up operations are ongoing Firefighters were alerted to the landslide at 5.20pm, reports Harian Metro. The station deployed 10 personnel to the affected area. They are now working to clear the mud and debris from the road. Contractors working in the area are also helping the personnel. Harian Metro added that the main road leading to Genting Highlands, however, is unaffected. The situation is under control When contacted by Berita Harian, the district police chief said that the situation is under control. However, the roads are still closed for cleanup works. We’ve reached out to the High Commission of Singapore in Kuala Lumpur for comments and advice for Singaporeans heading to Genting in the coming days. In the meantime, Singaporeans heading to Genting ought to check traffic conditions before heading over. If the weather is bad, it might be better to delay the drive up until the skies clear. We wish everyone a safe trip during the holiday season.

  5. Genting HK sells Zouk to Lim scion for $14 million source: https://www.theedgesingapore.com/news/corporate-moves/genting-hk-sells-zouk-lim-scion-14-million?utm_source=WeekdayEDM&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=FREE&vgo_ee=4%2B5Oes1dTlYS7lzaRbx5XQA3SuMkJhmkGexv49sZvNU%3D Lim Keong Hui, son of Genting group boss Lim Kok Thay, has bought over the Zouk Group from Genting Hong Kong for $14 million, or HK$79.3 million. Genting HK, whose main business is in operating cruise ships, will book a gain of HK$6.7 million from the sale. Hong Kong-listed Genting HK bought Zouk from its founder Lincoln Cheng back in 2015 for an undisclosed sum. The sale was announced by Genting HK on Sept 1. On Aug 28, Keong Hui resigned as executive director and deputy CEO of Genting HK, in order to “devote more time to other business commitments”. Keong Hui holds other key appointments with other Genting companies, except Genting Singapore. Zouk Group, which runs clubs and F&B outlets, has been in the red for more than two years. For the year ended Dec 31 2018, it lost HK$3.35 million, and losses widened to HK$11.6 million the following year. For the first seven months this year, when the iconic disco in Singapore was forced to turn into a eating place instead of a dancing club, losses hit HK$79.6 million. According to Zouk’s website, there are plans to expand to Las Vegas. Hit by the pandemic, Genting HK, which has some US$3.4 billion in liabilities, is trying to renegotiate debt with creditors.

  7. Racing up Ulu Yam/Genting – why do we still do this? source: https://paultan.org/2020/01/13/dont-take-racing-to-the-streets-take-it-to-the-track/ Time and time again, we see incidents of sports car and supercar owners racing on the public highway. Often driving in large groups, these individuals travel at high speeds on roads frequented by other motorists simply going about their own business, and they often end up in massive accidents. Most recently, a video posted by Azman Nor on Facebook – which showed a Renault Megane RS hitting a Proton Wira and flipping over – exhibited the public’s negative perception of these irresponsible road users, with many pouring scorn over actions that could so easily have been fatal. The road on which this accident took place, the B23 leading to Ulu Yam Baharu, is a popular destination for two- and four-wheeled enthusiasts looking for a spirited blast – as is the nearby road from Batang Kali to Genting Highlands – due to its sweeping corners and thrilling elevation changes. For the Initial D generation, it’s the perfect touge substitute. As many of us who have driven there will know, however, it is also extremely treacherous. The roads consist mostly of tight two-lane tarmac, with plenty of blind bends that are often badly surfaced, potentially causing hard-cornering cars to go off their intended line – and straight into oncoming traffic. And that’s before you take into account the fact that most stretches are pitch dark at night. Despite this, however, plenty of people continue to drive hard and fast on these roads, taking liberties not only by driving at ridiculous speeds, but also cutting into oncoming lanes in the corners. Even some of the local motoring media are guilty of this – I for one will admit to being one of them, having gotten into a serious single-vehicle crash there a few years ago. So I know how easily it can all go wrong in a split second. But it doesn’t take someone like me to tell you just how dangerous speeding is. Even on a relatively straight and empty highway, driving significantly above the speed limit opens you up to the possibility of a huge crash that can maim or kill you. On a twisty rural road with slow-moving traffic, the risk only multiplies. And don’t think for a second that your Ferrari’s sticky tyres and arsenal of driver aids are going to be enough to save you. While the advent of stability control remains the single biggest improvement in vehicle safety, even the most advanced systems can only go so far to compensate for excessive speed, the limits of grip or your lack of talent. The instant you lose control at high speeds, it is often too late. Driving or riding recklessly also gives us car and bike enthusiasts a bad name. We already have a lot on our plate, from rising car prices to the growing extinction of the sports car market, losing out to the ever-popular crossover (groan). We don’t need the public to turn against our simple love of driving too, do we? But it doesn’t have to be that way. Malaysia may no longer have the multitude of race circuits that we used to, but we still have a world-class facility just an hour’s drive away from the city centre – and the barrier of entry into the world of sanctioned motorsports is going down. Race organisers like our very own Malaysia Speed Festival (MSF) are offering track days at the Sepang International Circuit from as low as RM300 for two hours, and there you can drive as fast as you like – so long as you abide to a few simple safety regulations. Those of a more competitive bent can opt for time attack events, which are held not only by MSF but also other reputable entities like Grass Racing Autosports (GRA) and Sucimuci Motorsports. These events often have categories for road cars at affordable prices, catered to those with somewhat tighter belts. And while proper multi-car racing remains an expensive affair, series like our Saga Cup are much more cost-efficient and provide more door-to-door racing than even the most exciting Formula 1 race. And what about those who still want to experience the thrill of a public road? Well, this year MSF is hosting its MSF Touge Series of hillclimb events, held on exactly the type of twisty, hilly roads that enthusiasts love – but, most importantly, with the safety of being closed to traffic and managed by people who have decades of motorsports experience. It too is open to road cars, requiring the bare minimum of safety equipment. With all these options for the budding racer, the excuse of sanctioned motorsports being prohibitively expensive is no longer valid. It never was, anyway – it was perhaps understandable (but not excusable) for low-budget drivers to speed on the public highway, but if you can afford a sports car or even a moderately powerful hot hatch, you can afford a track day. So take your need for speed to the track. And when you are driving on a public road, do it sanely and responsibly by obeying all traffic rules. Lastly, drive within your limits of both your car and yourself, and don’t be pressured by other drivers to speed up. Remember, when you’re sharing the road with other users, safety always comes first. And of course, we at paultan.org try to be responsible when we take test cars out for a drive. While we do evaluate a car’s performance characteristics, we do it within the scope of what an average driver is capable of, and we do not push it to its absolute limits. With certain high performance vehicles, we rent a circuit to test them out, or have the authorities close the road – see our first, second and third Driven Web Series hot hatch episodes for examples – or rent an airfield as with our million-ringgit sports cars episode. We will never compromise safety for the sake of readership or viewership. Here's are some of the comments.
  8. A budget vacation for the family These rooms in the Theme Park Hotel suits most family very well. Especially those productive parents with 3-4 kids. https://youtu.be/TdEUKxEZDwA Classic high tea and walkabout on the first day of arrival. You need to walk a lot after numbing your butt in the long bus trip. https://youtu.be/l4gazQySWbI
  9. So I did a 4D3N road trip to Cameron Highlands & Genting Highlands last weekend. Having been to Cameron three times (Rode up twice, drove up once) and Genting (Rode up once, coached up numerous times when I was much younger), this was my first time renting a car in Malaysia to drive up. To those who are interested in renting a car in Malaysia to self-drive up north, here's my personal experience with Wahdah. I will also include some places that I visited in Cameron and maybe Genting. Rented from https://www.wahdah.my/ due to reasonable rates and ease of convenience. Wahdah offers pick up services as near as Caltex JB Sentral which is right beside City Square Mall in JB for a small fee. 1. Easy to understand and navigate website 2. Pretty wide range of cars from the Malaysian brands, to the more common Japanese and Korean cars. Good mixture! Such as the small Perodua Axia, Myvi, Bezza, Proton Saga to the usual Honda Jazz, City, Kia Forte, Toyota Vios, Sienta, Camry, and even the super big Hyundai Starex etc. Prices indicated on this page shows the rate for the entire duration of your booking, not inclusive of other options such as additional driver, pick up and return fee, and also refundable deposit, just to name a few. You can select for prices to be shown in SGD, RM or USD. The next page will allow you to select extra options and all charges are indicated clearly. 3. Easy submission of documents - passport photo, driving license onto website. Just snap photos on your phone and upload it. 4. Confirmation details (in pdf file) sent to my email right after I confirmed my booking. 5. Live chat. Any questions, just use their live chat feature. I had to add an additional driver one month after I made the booking and it was a breeze. Confirmation email was sent to me right after I submitted my payment details. 6. Check your booking by just logging into your account. 7. Contact person details for your booking is also indicated on your booking slip, just in case. I whatsapp-ed the person just a day before my trip just to be sure. Paid RM 704.90 (SGD 235) for my trip from Friday to Monday, inclusive of collection, return fee and additional driver. You can choose collection and return time. Mine was collect 7am at JB Sentral and 11pm return at same location. There is also a refundable deposit of RM 300 which will be refunded to you at least 15 days after returned of car. Renting a car in Malaysia is a good alternative for those who don't wanna risk driving your own car up north for various reasons. Renting a car in Malaysia is also cheaper than renting a car from Singapore to enter Malaysia for those who do not have a car. For my trip, my friend and I rode our cheap kup (motorcycle) into JB and parked in a safe location there. This way we didn't have to take a bus across the causeway etc.
  10. My family & I are planning to drive up to Genting Highlands for the holidays. As we need extra luggagespace, I have installed roof bars & will eventually put roof box/cargo. Anyone have tried to drive to Genting Highlands with roof box? How was the experience, is it generally safe? Along the way (stops on the high-way) as well as on parking at Genting Highlands? Any height clearance I should be aware of? Appreciate your inputs & sharing your experience.

  12. KUANTAN: Part of the main road leading to an educational institution near Genting Highlands collapsed early on Friday morning (Apr 6). A 30-metre-deep sunken surface was discovered by a security guard at Aminuddin Baki Institute at around 1.30am. “Electricity in the area has been temporarily disconnected because power cables in the affected area were affected by the collapse,” said Bentong Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) officer Lieutenant Mohd Zulkhairi Adek, He said no one was injured, adding that the road caved in during normal weather. The Pahang Fire and Rescue Department is investigating if there were burst underground pipes in the area. Meanwhile, the department's deputy director Mohd Sani Harul said the road along the affected stretch has been closed to traffic until further notice.

I used this service twice and gave up due to very slow speed, no privacy, noisy gaming environment. 2. free wifi at KFC and McDonalds at Genting Hotel "shopping mall". 3. free wifi at Starbuck Coffee at First World Plaza, Resort Hotel Lobby. [not sure about Highlands Hotel Lobby]. 4. free wired broadband at Highlands Hotel rooms [only at Level 15]. 5. broadband modem rental at First Hotel Hotel. Additional days usage top-up @RM2/days. 7. buy only the prepaid internet card @RM25 [see #6 above]. Use your own broadband modem or mobile phone [some can function as modem. I am using Samsung SGH-Z560.]. Average speed, but offset by the convenience of working in the privacy and comfort of own hotel room. * #6 & 7 should be able to use elsewhere in MY. * my sincere apologies in case of inaccurate info. Please verify on your own arrangement. Cheers !!
