  1. Making way for 6.9m population! Last time GCT played golf, these were untouchable. Now, LHL doesn't play golf... http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/two-golf-courses-be-phased-out-2024 The size of three other golf courses will be cut Published: 16 February, 6:02 PM Updated: 16 February, 6:15 PM SINGAPORE — The Government has announced the fate of golf clubs here, after days of speculation over which of the golf courses with leases expiring within the next 10 years will have to make way for redevelopment. Of the nine golf clubs with leases expiring within the next 10 years, two — Keppel Club and Marina Bay Golf Club — will not have their leases renewed. Three others — Tanah Merah Country Club (TMCC) and National Service Resort and Country Club (NSRCC) and Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) — will have their leases extended but they will be giving up part of the land they now occupy. The remaining four will have their leases extended with no change. Of the four, however, Orchid Country Club’s lease will not be further renewed after 2030. Singapore has 14 private golf courses and three public golf courses, taking up 1,500ha of land, or about 2 per cent of the Republic’s total land area. Last February, the Government had said that some of these golf courses will have to be phased out and the land be put to other uses. Keppel Club, which has origins dating back to 1904, will not have its lease extended after it expires on Dec 31, 2021, as the land is needed for housing development. The club, which occupies some 44ha of land, will be offered an alternative site to operate as a social club if it is keen, the Ministry of Law (Minlaw) and the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) said today (Feb 16). TMCC and NSRCC will have their leases extended, but will give up some of their land for Changi Airport’s expansion plans. The Government will acquire about 10ha of land from TMCC — comprising six holes from TMCC’s Garden golf course, three of its tennis courts and two of its storage sheds — to make way for new taxiways to be built at Changi Airport. The SLA will gazette the land affected by the acquisition tomorrow (Feb 17). About 26ha of NSRCC’s land will be affected. Part of its Air Force course and part of its Executive nine-hole course will be affected by the airport expansion works and re-alignment of Changi Coast Road. Some parts of the leasehold land will also be affected by the Land Transport Authority’s road works and PUB’s drainage works. The SICC’s courses at its Island location will have its lease extended, but one of its two Bukit location courses will be run as a public course by the labour movement when its lease expires in 2021. This is to ensure public access to golfing facilities when the Marina Bay Golf Course — a 68-ha public course — is phased out for redevelopment. The lease for the SICC’s other Bukit course will only be extended if it can work out with the labour movement how to reconfigure its courses and possibly share its facilities by February next year. The authorities also suggested that the labour movement discuss the possibility of offering some arrangement to Keppel Club members at the public course. “This depends, of course, on all the parties being able to agree on terms,” they said. The changes affected about 200ha of land in all. “Golfing is an activity that is enjoyed by many Singaporeans, with many of them owning or aspiring to own memberships in golf clubs,” the authorities said. “However, golfing and golf clubs are land intensive and there is a need to balance the competing demands for land.”
  2. Plug-in hybrids are gaining in popularity, with Ford, Toyota and Honda all offering vehicles fitted with the unique powertrains. But while cars like the Fusion Energi, Prius Plug-In and Accord Plug-In boast excellent economy numbers as they match the best assets of electric vehicles with traditional hybrids, they lack the zest and fun that some drivers crave. According to rumors from the UK, though, a fun plug-in could be on the horizon. Hoping to capitalize on the performance reputation of the GTI, Volkswagen is reportedly developing a car called the Golf GTE. Power would come from the same powertrain slated for the Audi A3 E-Tron, a 1.4-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder with 148 horsepower. Mated to that is a 107-horsepower electric motor, which draws power from an 8.8-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. A 6-speed, dual-clutch transmission would shift 204 total system horsepower to the front wheels, which will allow the GTE to hit 62 miles per hour in 7.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 135 mph. Outside of the unique powertrain, we'd expect the GTE to follow the same formula used for the diesel-powered Golf GTD - that means GTI-sourced bits for the suspension and brakes, as well as sportier interior and exterior treatments. It is unclear if this model will make it to Singapore market, but even if it does, we can only expect this model somewhere in late 2015.
  3. After winning this year's European Car of the Year and World Car of the Year awards, the Volkswagen Golf has picked up its third - the annual Car of the Year Japan award. The Volkswagen Golf achieved a first in the 34-year history of the Car of the Year Japan awards by winning the coveted title in a ceremony held in conjunction with the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. No foreign car has won the award, till now. In a contest that was expected to see the Golf trade blows with the Honda Fit/Jazz for honours, the Golf polled strongly from the outset and ended up amassing a commanding 504 out of a possible 600 points from the 60 jurors in attendance. The Fit/Jazz came in second with 373 votes while the Volvo V40 followed with 167 votes. "This is a very special award for us in so many ways. Firstly, our Golf 7 has become the first ever imported car to win Japan's COTY award, and we achieved this in our 60th year since Volkswagen imports started into Japan," commented Shigeru Shoji, President of Volkswagen Japan. Explaining its decision, the jury highlighted in particular the new Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) as a core strength of the Golf. The MQB formed the basis for precise handling with simultaneously high levels of ride comfort and driving pleasure, the jurors said. Further features to earn praise included the excellent standard of safety, the clear and clean design, the high-quality interior and exterior finish and the highly modern TSI engines. In three new minor awards that were introduced this year, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV picked up the 'Innovation Award', the Mazda6 won the 'Emotional Award' and the jointly developed Suzuki Spacia and Mazda Flair Wagon captured the 'Small Mobility Award'. The 'Special Achievement Award' went to the Daihatsu Move for its front seat lift design, technology created to assist senior citizens and people with disabilities.
  4. Interesting comparison. Surprisingly, Golf is the cheapest base on this Article. Is it the same DSG gearbox as the old model? If so, then have to steer clear of the German... http://www.sgcarmart.com/news/review.php?AID=618
  5. Recently, we chanced upon a comparsion article where a few of the current and best hot hatches went head to head with each other. What caught my attention was that Volkswagen’s Golf GTI was faster in a straight line to 100km/h and 160km/h as compared to its peers; the Megane 265 Cup and Focus ST. That said, the tested GTI had the Performance Package and DSG, which meant around 227bhp (7bhp more than what we get locally). A little digging on the net revealed that owners of the new GTI have little or no problems keeping up with modified previous generation GTIs. Could it be that Volkswagen underrated the GTI’s output? We estimate it might actually be producing around 250bhp. On another note, if you need more power, one can always opt for a tune up from Oettinger. They claim to be able to make your GTI produce up to 350bhp with the help of a sport exhaust system, new intercooler and new custom air intakes. We believe they will also be changing the mapping of your ECU to help optimise the available potential from the latest EA888 engine. Other upgrades available include Oettinger’s aerodynamic package, which consists of a front spoiler with separate splitter, side skirts, rear diffuser and rear roof spoiler. In addition to the sonorous exhaust system with twin tailpipes either side, the strikingly designed roof spoiler with open R-Flaps provides a sporty stance.
  6. I hope Bro Tigerwood can teach me whats wrong in this tee-off driver shot and what happened to the head of that poor unlucky spectator got hit in his skull at the green http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ep4wiN39tLk
  7. It is an expected move from Volkswagen - a more potent, all-wheel drive variant to top the Golf range. But now it has got almost 300bhp from the redeveloped 2.0-litre lump taken off its GTI stablemate. Is this VW's hottest hot hatch yet? 2.0-litre. Four cylinders. 296bhp. 380Nm. 5.3 seconds. These are the figures from the latest Golf R. In comparison, the Mk7 GTI has 220bhp and 350Nm of torque. That is almost 80 more horses in a similarly-sized hatchback. While the weight of the new R is not disclosed yet, we expect the Haldex four-wheel drive system to put a toll on the R at the scales. Then, the fifth generation of the AWD system promises up to 100 percent torque transfer to the rear axle - all done in fraction of a second via the Haldex coupling with help of an electro-hydraulic pump. Some cool tech there. To us, the previous gen Golf R was mind-blowing enough with 256bhp and 330Nm of torque. But then, we bet it was only right for VW to increase the power figures as it is the natural way to showcase its progress - as with any car manufacturer. Then, we would gladly have the twin-centre pipes (which we thought was the iconic symbolisation of the R) over the quad pipes, any day, anytime. Let's keep our fingers crossed that this wouldn't be a mere figure-boasting exercise.
  8. While you're driving on the road, one rule of thumb that you'll always have to keep in mind is to be careful, real careful. You have to watch out not only for vehicles to avoid a crash, but you'll also have to beware of drivers who may go mad at you, even if you think you've done not even a single thing that's wrong. I believe you don't want to experience what this motorcycle rider did. Unfortunately enough for the motorcycle rider, he got slapped in the middle of the road by a guy driving a Volkswagen Golf. Honestly, this Golf driver is kind of stupid, I would say, thinking that the motorcycle rider was trying to race him. He claimed that the rider was riding aggressively while in fact it was the VW Golf driver himself who was an aggressive driver and the public could see it as well. Based on what we can see in the video, in addition to the statement from the motorcycle rider which seemed true, we tend to believe that the Golf driver was entirely wrong. Besides, had the motorcycle rider tried to race him, he would have gone past the VW Golf way ahead, keeping in mind how motorcycles can easily slip through traffic whereas cars can't. In addition to that, most of today's motorcycles have really fast acceleration. Just try to recall for yourself, how often have you seen motorcycles going past cars so easily? I believe it happens nearly all the time. However, the response of the motorcycle rider is somewhat cool, I should say. Instead of fighting back, he chose to report the aggressive driver to the local police department. All that's left to do now is to wait for police investigation to complete and it should not take long as the Golf driver had already been identified. According to the rider, one little slap was no big deal, but had the Golf driver hit him the second time, he would have taken his revenge and things would have gone out of hand. Furthermore, the motorcycle rider was putting on a full face helmet, carbon gloves, and protective gear. With that being said, you should be able to imagine how bad things could have gone for the stupid guy in the VW Golf. Well, two thumbs up for you, motorcycle rider!
  9. Volkswagen is extending the appeal of the new seventh-generation Golf with three new R-Line packages designed by Volkswagen R GmbH. The 'Exterior' package emphasises the striking appearance of the Golf and complements it with a rear spoiler finished in body colour, fog lights, R-Line logo on the special glossy black radiator grille, special bumpers, flared sills and sporty black painted diffuser. The package is available with the Highline trim for the price of
  10. Saw this marketing message by Opel. Quite catchy. Is the Astra a better buy compared to the Golf? http://www.sgcarmart.com/new_cars/newcars_...e.php?Make=Opel

  12. I saw the TV commercial for the new Golf, and was so delighted they were playing DM's People are People song. DM was my all time fav band, and loved almost every damm song of theirs Any feedbacks on this new Golf? Bigger, faster, badder? What is this government rebate of $15,000 because of emissions? how does this rebate works? http://www.sgcarmart.com/new_cars/newcars_...p?CarCode=11262

  15. [extract] Every time Volkswagen releases a new Golf GTI model, it gets more powerful and faster. The current Golf GTI makes around 210bhp and with 280Nm of torque. Pretty powerful for a hatchback but there are other more powerful alternatives if someone

  17. Was wondering why there are so many Golf GTi for sale lately.... I was thinking that probably because fuel prices have been high lately so people are trading in their fast cars for more economical models. Then when I was checking one of the units out ( hoping to find one cheap enough ) then I realise why people are selling their GTi.... The consumption is overwhelming....at 49.9 litre/100km or 2 km/litre . Guess that that is at a spirited ride session but wahpei-ehh....sepai jiak lak ! How to tahan this kind of consumption ??? I put off the idea of ever getting a car like this !
  18. For those automotive enthusiasts who are into the sport of golf, this piece of news is for you. Ferrari has teamed up with Cobra Puma Golf to add the iconic prancing horse on a line of golfing equipment. This long-term partnership between Cobra Puma Golf and Ferrari SpA is bringing a new type of product to the industry that is both beautiful and technically advanced, truly merging both art and science. The Ferrari Golf Collection was developed through a collaboration with Cobra Puma Golf and Ferrari SpA. It brings the most innovative technologies from Cobra Puma Golf engineers and Ferrari aerodynamic engineers together with premium materials, packaging and unquestionable style. "We saw an opportunity in the current marketplace to bring the Ferrari Golf Collection to life," commented Bob Philion, President of Cobra Puma Golf. "It's a high end collection the golf industry has never seen before; bringing together the best of Cobra Puma Golf enriched with the expertise of Ferrari in a superior product offering of equipment, apparel, accessories and footwear. We are thrilled to be working with Ferrari SpA on this long-term collection to bring a new, premium golf product line up to consumers." The culmination of the Ferrari Golf Collection lies in the Cobra Ferrari Driver, a true work of art designed and developed by Cobra Puma Golf equipment engineers with Ferrari SpA aerodynamics engineers. The result is a super premium, aerodynamic, multi-material design that delivers fast club head speed and exceptional distance. After studying the Cobra ZL Encore Driver, Ferrari aerodynamics engineers suggested shape changes that would reduce drag coefficient, making the club swing easily through the air and resulting in more club head speed. These changes included new radii along the face perimeter, smoothing of the bottom sole surfaces and raising the trailing edge of the driver higher off the ground (to delay separation). These new designs along with multi-material construction reduce drag, increase club head speed and maximize distance. The attention to detail, performance and style did not end with the driver. The Ferrari Golf Collection apparel, footwear and accessories fuse form, function and fashion in a collection of impeccable design. The accessory range features premium visors, belts, gloves, umbrellas and bags. A selection of the accessories, such as the Ferrari Golf Luxury Bag and Ferrari Golf Luxury Duffel, are crafted in Poltrana Frau Leather, the same leather used in Ferrari GT Cars. For this season, the Ferrari Golf Collection apparel features polos, knits, jackets and pants. The Ferrari Golf Tech Polo uses state of the art fabrics and technology such as Coolmax All Season, UPF 50+ and moisture wicking for a shirt that keeps you comfortable and stylish in any weather. The Ferrari On Course Jacket has a striking style with contrast red stitching on black fabric, this design was based off of the interior of a Ferrari car. The jacket is also breathable, wind resistant and water resistant for extreme comfort throughout course of play. The Ferrari Golf Leather Shoe is handcrafted in Italy with genuine full grain leather upper and sole. Available in white or black, the shoe is the epitome of fashion and technology. Utilizing Puma's S2Quill technology, the shoe provides superior traction, stability and support while on course. The delicate stitching in the shoe is designed after the interior of a Ferrari car and the sleek silhouette is an understated, luxury look that will have heads turning all over the golf course. The collection can be found in select golf retailers, select Ferrari Stores and select high end retailers starting in July, 2012. Photo credit: Motor Authority
  19. VW has been marketing some sexy cars lately. Anyone being to their showroom today to test-drive the new Golf Cabrio 1.4TSi? Waiting time is a good 75mins wait for test drive. Looks pretty crowded today, loss my patience waiting and decided to head home. At $140K to pop the canvas roof with $29K OMV, is this a good deal?
  20. Since its introduction in the mid 70s, no other hatchbacks have managed to knock the Golf from the throne, is it correct to say this? the old escort, then the focus; the Astra (?), more recently the 1-series, not forgetting a few other european hatchbacks like the 305-308, the magene, C4, Bravo, Alfa hatchback, etc, from japan: Civic hatchback, and all the others HBs, all more or less fail.... So far, which model(s) come close to knocking it off? why it's so hard to beat? (I am not a Golf fan)

  22. With the recent release of their MQB platform, it is expected that Volkswagen will release the next generation Golf some time in the fourth quarter of this year and Volkswagen will introduce changes to the model that is normally found in higher end models. It is rumoured that Volkswagen will debut the Mk 7 Golf at the 2012 Paris Motor Show this year (29 September to 14 October) and the car will be packed with technology that is usually associated with luxury models. The car will come in several engine variants, from the ordinary petrol engine up to a plug-in hybrid that generates around 243bhp. The normal models are powered by a new series of downsized petrol engines (code EA211) and diesel engines (code EA288). The top of the range diesel model (non GTD) will generate around 181bhp and 380Nm of torque. There is also a 220bhp twin turbocharged diesel engine that the company is still putting under some tests and this one will likely end up in the GTD sub-model. As for the petrol engines, the smallest displacement engine is a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine that generates around 138bhp and it features cylinder deactivation for increased economy. The larger engine (code EA888) sizes are at 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre. The Mk 7 Volkswagen Golf GTI gets the most radical change of all. The 2.0-litre engine will deliver around 260bhp, a 50bhp increase from the current generation. The next Golf GTI will feature the new VAQ electronically controlled front differential and Volkswagen mentioned that it will offer a more agile steering behaviour and a much greater sense of steering precision. All wheel drive and the company
  23. Just one year ago, Volkswagen introduced the Mk6 Golf Cabriolet at the Geneva Motor Show. And this year at the same auto show, Volkswagen is bringing a production ready Mk6 Golf Cabriolet GTI. The car will be the last Mk6 Golf sub-model before the German automaker unveils the next-generation Golf some time at the end of this year. Volkswagen first showed a concept version of the car in the middle of last year during the 2011 Worthersee Tour. Many felt that it was not surprising for Volkswagen to introduce a GTI version for the car as they have done that before in the Mk1 Golf Cabriolet. The car might retain some of the concept
  24. The cross-sharing of platforms and technologies between models in the automotive industry is not exactly new but in the recent years, many automakers have focused on this even more. The Volkswagen Group is one such company and we can clearly see this in models within the group. Volkswagen has rolled out a new and important piece of technology that will be used in their vehicles starting this year. It is the MQB platform which is Modularer Querbaukasten in German. In English it means Modular Transverse Matrix platform. Flexibility and reduced production costs are the key reasons for this platform. Volkswagen will build 30 models under this particular platform. It covers all models above the group
