  4. Source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp.../359608/1/.html Oil prices rally on tight supplies, Iran fears Posted: 11 July 2008 0351 hrs NEW YORK: Oil prices shot higher on Thursday on the back of simmering geopolitical tensions over key producer Iran and lingering worries over stretched global crude supplies, traders said. The International Energy Agency (IEA), meanwhile, forecast that tension on oil markets was set to ease early next year amid an economic slowdown in the United States. In addition, the OPEC oil producers' cartel cut its estimate for world crude demand over the next two decades, predicting that high prices would compel consumer countries to be more efficient in their use of the precious commodity. New York's main oil futures contract, light sweet crude for August delivery, jumped 5.60 dollars to close at 141.65 dollars per barrel. On the London market, Brent North Sea oil futures for August delivery leapt 5.45 dollars to settle at 142.03 dollars. "Investors were not ready to liquidate their crude positions just yet, with persistent geopolitical fears and worries over long-term crude supply tightness," said Sucden analyst Andrey Kryuchenkov. Prices have soared since breaking through 100 dollars at the start of the year but are down about five dollars from record peaks near 147 dollars last week. Traders tracked events concerning Iran, which is OPEC's second-largest crude oil producer with an output of about 4.0 million barrels per day. Iran test-fired more weaponry on Thursday as it continued war games, ignoring global concern over its launch of a broadside of missiles amid efforts to end a dispute over its nuclear programme. The White House downplayed the risk of war between Iran and the United States, despite the Iranian missile tests and some tough talk by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Rice warned Iran that Washington had beefed up its security presence in the Gulf and would not hesitate to defend its ally Israel. Iran insists its nuclear drive is aimed solely at generating energy but some Western nations fear it could be aimed at making an atomic bomb and have called for a freeze of uranium enrichment. OPEC would not be able to replace Iran's oil production if supplies were halted in case of a war with Israel or the United States, the oil cartel's chief said. "I hope there will be no attack on Iran. I hope that problem will be solved peacefully," the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries' secretary general Abdalla Salem El-Badri told a news conference in Vienna. "But if something were to happen, it is impossible to replace the production of Iran." OPEC also cut its long-term estimate for world oil demand, saying consumption in 2030 would be 3.7 percent lower than previously forecast because of energy-saving. The IEA, meanwhile, predicted that demand in advanced countries seemed to be on a weaker trend but it forecast a global increase in demand of 1.0 percent next year. The Paris-based agency cautioned that demand for oil would remain robust in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America, fuelled by vibrant economic momentum and continued low fuel prices. The IEA said global oil demand was expected to come to 87.7 million barrels a day next year. That marked an increase of 1.0 percent from the level of 86.9 million barrels a day that was forecast for 2008. Demand this year was seen rising by a slight 80,000 barrels a day, according to the IEA. - AFP/de

  6. Malaysian coalition party calls for no-confidence vote against PM KOTA KINABALU, Malaysia: A party in Malaysia's ruling coalition called Wednesday for a vote of no confidence against the prime minister, in a serious blow to the beleaguered government. Sabah Progressive Party president Yong Teck Lee demanded major concessions from the government, and said the party would decide on Friday whether to quit the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition. He left open the prospect of joining the opposition alliance led by former deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim, who has ambitions of forming a new administration with the help of defecting government lawmakers. "We have lost confidence in the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi," he told a press conference. "Whoever would agree with our issues here, we will work with, inside and outside of Sabah," he added. Abdullah has been fighting for his political survival since the March general elections that saw the opposition gain unprecedented results, including a third of parliamentary seats and control of five states. A recent 41 percent petrol price hike, which has triggered widespread outrage and public protests, has made his position even more tenuous. Yong attacked the Barisan Nasional's record in the impoverished state on Borneo island, saying it had been subject to unfair laws and excessive taxes. "That is why we need an immediate declaration of no confidence in the PM and the government, to tell the BN government that we can no longer tolerate their insensitive attitude towards the Sabah issues that are real and serious." "We will be discussing our status to remain in BN at our party headquarters meeting on Friday," he said, listing demands including the diversion of energy revenues coming from the resource-rich state. "With our political move today, SAPP hereby initiates the political process to claim 20 percent in oil royalties, which is after all the natural resources of Sabah," he said. "We must make a stand before the window of opportunity closes," he said, raising the prospect of a no-confidence vote when the new parliamentary session opens on Monday. "Unfair federal laws, excessive taxes and structural imbalances in the economy will remain entrenched. Sabah will remain the poorest state, subservient to the central leadership," he said. - AFP/ac

  15. Was doing shopping over the weekends for CNY at one of the supermarket (do not want to name it). There are long que at every cashier counter and every cashiers were busy punching or scanning the cash register machines. Whilst queing at no 3 behind a supposely educated looking couple in the 40's. I was shocked by the way they react to the cashier. The couple had emptied their one whole load of items from the trolley at front of the counter and the cashier starts to scan the bar code. As she (cashier) placed the items scanned into the plastic bag and thereafter, place the full plastic bag at the counter beside the cashier. What comes next is unbelieveable........ . The couple shouted at the cashier and insisted that she place the plastic bags into the trolley which, the cashier had to stretch over the counter if she have too place them into the trolley. The poor cashier was for a moment and then she reply that she was busy and unable to reach the trolley. The couple insist that she do it or they will complaint to the manager. They expects such simple services to be provided by the supermarket. An argument started and the couple insist of calling the supervisor or floor manager over. Already in the que for the past 30 minutes (extreme long que) and unable to withstand it anymore, I shouted to the couple that, hey.... there is a long que here and could you just place your dammed plastic bags into the trolley yourselves. The couple looks at me and shouted that they have the rights to demand for services. This is the best parts which I like..... . Out of a sudden, the whole roll of ppls queing infront & behind me started to shout back at the couple to pick up their bags & "F**K Off" and don't held up the que. . A male chinese in his 40's with body tattoo uses foul languages to such extend that the couple looks . A floor supervisor came and escort the gumbling couple with it's trolley & items to the office. Did not know what happen thereafter. What kind of species is this. Able to unload items by items from trolley to the cashier counter but unable to lift bags of items back into the trolley after scanning....... Kudo to the male chinese with tattoo for his foul languages. He was also in the que for the past 30 minutes.......

  23. Just read the New Paper and my blood boiled up as 4 teens had written rude & obscene graffiti in school. They were arrested by police on Monday evening after repeated address by the school principal to own up before a police report to be lodged. No one own up and as such, the case was referred to the police. Through the CCTV tape, police were able to make the arrest. Quote: from the principal: "I'm saddened by what has happen but I'm not angry with them because they come from trouble family backgrounds. I'm not justifying their act." Trouble or not, discipline had to be instilled into these students. By having trouble family background does not excuse you from punishment or above the law. If not checked, their excuse for committing murder in future is also come from troubled family background. So many cases involving students had surface recently from assaulting bus captain, fighting in MSCP, mischief by fire..... etc. What had went terriblely wrong with our youth nowadays?
