  2. SINGAPORE : A Traffic Police operation in Tuas on Wednesday morning carried out to nab speeding heavy vehicles also resulted in 620 cars being clocked exceeding the speed limit. They will be fined for speeding. The Traffic Police mounted the operation along the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE), just before the slip road to Benoi Road and Gul Way. Between 8.10am and 11.10am, 12 heavy vehicles were caught speeding while 620 cars exceeded the 90 km/h speed limit for cars. The Traffic Police said they are clamping down on speeding heavy vehicles with mobile speed cameras and frequent patrols, especially in the Tuas area. Their efforts have paid off in reducing the number of accidents and fatalities. Between January and June this year, there were 114 accidents involving prime movers, tipper trucks and trailers compared to 123 accidents during the same period last year. There were 16 injured drivers and heavy vehicle passengers in the first six months of this year and also during the same period last year. One person died during that six-month period last year, while there have been no fatalities so far in the first six months of this year. On Wednesday, a tipper truck driver was also pulled over by the Traffic Police for speeding at 73 km/h. The speed limit for heavy vehicles on the AYE is 60km/h. The driver was led to a vehicle inspection centre in Pioneer Road where the speed limiter of his truck was tested and it was found to be faulty. 3. Last night & today, almost rear collided by motorbikes who tried to overtaking, first was a bike with exhaust mod racing along a bend on lane1 at high speed, today was another bike cant wait for cars to exit road on left, die die want to overtake. Come to worse only the bikers will suffer bodily harm not the car owners, money cannot buy back their lives. So do u think anything will change if more stringent demerit penalty is imposed on motorcyclist?
  4. As above. Drive with care.

  6. For all those arguing that heavy vehicles are allowed to speed and keep on Lanes 1 and 2 of the expressway, well... here's video proof that the Traffic Police DO NOT think so: So.. all you truckers and vans with speed limit =< 70kph ... please KEEP LEFT when you are on expressways...
  7. Haiz !! .Japan issued its top tsunami warning after a massive 8.8 magnitude offshore quake on Friday, with reports of 'numerous' injuries and ships being washed ashore by waves. The US Geological Survey upgraded the quake to 8.8 from 7.9. Numerous injuries were reported by police in Japan's Miyagi prefecture and there were reports of scores of cars floating in Iwate prefecture harbour. The meteorological agency issued its top-level evacuation alerts for the entire Japanese coast, warning of a tsunami of up to six metres (20 feet). A tsunami warning was issued for Japan, Russia and the Mariana Islands, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. The quake struck about 382 kilometres (237 miles) northeast of Tokyo, the US Geological Survey said. Smoke could be seen rising from a building in Tokyo port. 13. What do you think of banning Heavy Vehicles (esp. trailers, cement trucks and big lorries) from Expressway during peak hours? I.E. during peak hours like 7.30am - 9.30am and 5pm - 7pm, those vehicles with speed limit 60 and below cannot use expressway. Only those with 70 limit and able to use. Do you think such a scheme will ease traffic congestion?
  14. My new MHI aircons installed today are made in thailand!! I thot Mit aircons very popular one?

  16. Received this message from a friend of mine, thought it might be interesting to share the info with you... We are not sure why it is so effective, just try this method when it rains heavily. This method was told by a police friend who had experienced and confirmed it. It is useful even driving at night. Most of the motorists would turn on HIGH or FASTEST SPEED of the wipers during heavy downpour, yet the visibiilty in front of the windscreen is still bad..... In the event you face such a situation, just try your SUN GLASSES (any model will do), and miracle! All of a sudden, your visibility in front of your windscreen is perfectly clear, as if there is no rain. Make sure you always have a pair of SUN GLASSES in your car, as you are not only helping yourself to drive safely with good vision, but also might save your friend's life by giving him this idea. Try it yourself and share it with your friends!
  17. http://www.asiaone.com/Motoring/Drivers/St...611-147737.html Browse through the asiaone forum and read that most of the comments are negative towards these drivers. Yes, LTA have cracked down on such drivers but we are still encountering these insane drivers especially when we are heading towards jurong or tuas, be it AYE,ECP or West coast HWY. What should the Authority do-- with drastic action to ensure road users safety......your comments..

  20. Newbie (P plate) driver - How to change lane in heavy traffic? Help please...thanks = ) When i drive, i kinda feel nervous when i have to change lane in heavy traffic, esp. during peak hours on normal 3 lane roads n expressways. I need to change lane not because i like to, but because i have to make a turn further ahead, U turn, or drop off a passenger by the roadside. I see so many cars on my right or left side...all zoom past continuously like choo choo trains, n no gap to cut into...i kinda feel nervous leh. Then if i keep on driving n driving i will miss my turn. I keep my signal on by the way Today, i happened to see a gap n so i slowly wanna change lane into the gap. i did it slowly, since driving school say change lane cannot do abruptly. (i onced changed lane sharply n abruptly n kenna scolded by the instructor lol) Then the car behind i think speed up n horn n horn me. then i got a shock...feel scared. so i keep to my own lane n then let him pass before i change lane. Those laojiao drivers, any tips for changing lanes in heavy traffic? I always worry the gap too small to squeeze in, or i scared others will speed up n close up the gap once i wanna go in. Sometimes when traffic is heavy during peak hours, the cars on the other lane seems to go on n on.... all so close together, n no gap to enter. And another problem is, i keep on looking at my side mirrors to lookout for a gap for me to change lane into. Then when i keep on looking, n i tend to forget to see the traffic in front of me. Got once i almost hit the car in front of me coz the car in front stopped due to traffic light changed, n during that time my eyes still focused on my side mirror. Lucky i stepped on my brakes on time. So how ah? i find it hard to concentrate both on the front of the roads n at my side mirror at the same time, when i need to change lane in heavy traffic. Any tips from experienced drivers? Hope to learn some tips n skills here, in order to improve my driving...I'm a new driver still on P plate, n i hope i dun cause inconveniences to other driver or cause potential acccidents.
  21. I've seen the EMAS display show slow traffic, heavy traffic and massive jam. Are there any more? I assume slow traffic < heavy traffic < massive jam, right?
  22. There goes tax payers $$$ ... Temasek will be one of the biggest casualties. It took a 12 per cent stake worth about A$400 million last year, buying in when the shares were at A$7.30 only to see the stock plummet to 54 Australian cents before they were suspended. http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNew...ory_300845.html
  23. Errant truckers' crackdown 22 nabbed for speeding, 227 summonses issued in 10 joint operations since May By Sujin Thomas THE traffic authorities mounted a crackdown on heavy vehicle drivers yesterday for speeding and other traffic offences. It was the 10th joint operation by the Traffic Police, Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Jurong Inspection Centre held since May to clamp down on errant drivers of heavy vehicles, whose numbers have been rising. Drivers who got pulled over yesterday received warnings or summonses on the spot. One of the luckier ones was a cement-mixer driver who wanted to be known only as Mr Lew. He was stopped at a roadblock in Tampines Link, a popular road that heavy vehicles ply daily. An LTA officer who inspected his cement mixer found its brake lights to be faulty and the licence plates covered in mud. 'I'll fix it now, I'll fix it now,' he said repeatedly in Malay before being let off with a warning. He immediately got down to fixing the problem - replacing the brake light bulbs and scrubbing down his licence plates with water - in a nearby heavy vehicle wash. The 54-year-old driver, who has more than 20 years of experience driving heavy vehicles, said: 'Luckily they didn't issue me with a summons.' Traffic Police senior staff sergeant Mohd Fadzil, 34, told The Straits Times: 'Drivers usually say they didn't know when we catch them for not displaying their speed-limiter labels or for not carrying a breakdown sign with them. 'But those caught for speeding usually don't say much because we clock speeds with our laser speed guns. They'll just ask for another chance.' Speed limits for heavy vehicles vary between 40kmh and 60kmh. In the 10 operations mounted from May, 22 heavy vehicle drivers were caught speeding while 66 summonses were issued for offences involving the speed limiter, a device which prevents the vehicle from travelling beyond its speed limit. A further 161 summonses were issued for other violations. In all, 1,397 heavy vehicle drivers were nabbed in the first half of this year for flouting road rules. The figure was 1,160 for the whole of last year. Oil reservoir analyst Tuang Kwong Feng, 44, said that although the clampdown was a step in the right direction, more needs to be done to curb speeding. 'Heavy vehicle drivers earn money from the number of trips they make, so they often drive recklessly,' he said. Educational posters were also handed out to drivers and many were advised on road safety rules. Roving teams of Traffic Police officers on motorcycles and patrol cars also conducted checks in the vicinity. Last Tuesday, a National University of Singapore professor was killed after being hit by a heavy vehicle at the junction of Commonwealth Avenue West and Clementi Road.
