  3. A 31-year old Singaporean driver had two police vehicles hot on his wheels in a 15km high-speed chase on Monday night, which spanned from around Punggol West to Shenton Way. He was eventually nabbed for driving while under disqualification, and for his rash act. The police had been conducting an operation along the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) when the man's car whizzed past. He was found to be speeding, but did not stop when signalled to do so by the police. Instead, he stepped on the gas and sped off. The police began their pursuit, which started along the KPE around Punggol West and moved to the East Coast Parkway (ECP). The chase ended after the car turned into a carpark along Prince Edward Road around Shenton Way, and the driver found himself cornered by the two police vehicles. His car finally came to a halt after colliding with the police car. Police investigations are ongoing Bugger. Trying to mess with Mata S80
  4. A new range of diesel-powered, less powerful luxury cars is gaining traction with buyers amid a re-categorisation of the Certificates of Entitlement (COEs). This is due to cheaper diesel and maintenance, as well as low-emission rebates. But experts said the trend may defeat the purpose of the COE changes. Experts said the new range of diesel-powered cars provides buyers with a less powerful alternative under Category A. But they said Category A cars were meant for more affordable, mass market options. Professor Lee Der Horng from National University of Singapore’s Department of Environmental and Civil Engineering said: "If somehow we are not able to achieve this policy goal, then I would say the consumer may still face the same situation that we have already experienced in 2013, which means Cat A COE may still be vibrant and the price may still keep climbing." New rules that kicked in on Saturday saw small cars with powerful engines moved to Category B of the COE system. Previously, cars with engine capacities of 1,600cc and below were placed in Category A regardless of engine power. 5. http://news.asiaone.com/news/edvantage/river-valley-high-teacher-knocked-down-van-outside-school River Valley High teacher knocked down by van outside school AsiaOne Thursday, Nov 07, 2013 SINGAPORE - A River Valley High School teacher was hit by a goods van suspected of beating the red light near the school gate. Mrs Eileen Pua Jiu Er, 31, a chemistry teacher, suffered three fractures and was sent to hospital, Lianhe Wanbao reported. The accident happened on Tuesday, at a traffic crossing outside the school at about 12.15pm. Mrs Pua had been crossing a road along Boon Lay Avenue, just outside the school, when the accident occured. This morning, Mrs Pua spoke to reporters at the National University Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She said she was on her way home and had just started crossing the road when she suddenly felt something hit her forcefully. When she regained consciousness, she found herself lying on a hospital bed. "I saw the pedestrian traffic light turn green before stepping off the curb," she said. "I am a teacher, and I need to set a good example when I'm outside the school, so I definitely wouldn't cross when the light is still red," she told Wanbao reporters. She suffered multiple fractures all over her body, broken ribs and is expected to take at least a month to recover. Closed-circuit television footage was not able to determine if Mrs Pua had dashed across the road when the light had not yet turned green or if the van driver had beaten the red light. ------ Remember that earlier video - where the taxi jammed brakes after running red lights, and managed to stop before hitting the car? This van was not so lucky... hope the punishment is severe. Gotta teach drivers to slow down at amber and stop at red light; not to save a couple of minutes by running the red lights; but risking harming people.
  6. Seven midsize vehicles earned the top rating in a new insurance industry test of high-tech safety features designed to prevent front-end collisions. The Cadillac ATS and SRX, Subaru Legacy and Outback, Mercedes C-Class and Volvo S60 and XC60 won "superior" ratings in tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The institute tested 74 midsize cars and SUVs from the model years 2013 and 2014. Those equipped with front collision-warning and automatic braking systems generally scored better. The systems can either warn the driver or automatically stop the car if they sense a potential collision. The institute IIHS, a nonprofit research group funded by insurance companies, has pushed federal regulators and automakers to require or offer as an option new safety systems such as antilock brakes. The group also is pushing automakers to bolster front-end crash resistance. Automakers have been offering the frontal-crash systems on more and more models as the price of the technology falls. The systems use radar, cameras, ultrasonic sensors and computers to spot objects in front of cars and determine if a collision is possible. A driver may be warned to take action, or the system may apply the brakes itself. The IIHS said its data institute has determined that the devices help drivers avoid frontal crashes, but even so, auto insurance companies generally aren't offering discounts for people who buy them. Insurance companies say that as the systems become more popular in certain models, insurance claims will decline. Those models eventually will see discounted rates. In the tests, six other cars got second-best "advanced" ratings, while 25 received "basic" ratings. Another 36 got no rating because they didn't have the systems or their systems didn't meet the institute's standards. The institute says the tests will help people decide which features to buy and encourage automakers to adopt the new technology faster. 8. The number of off-peak car (OPC) offences soared to a new high last year even as the population of red-plate cars continues to dwindle. According to the Land Transport Authority (LTA), there were about 23,160 offences last year, nearly twice the number in 2011 and about 19 times more than in 2009. An LTA spokesman attributed the spike to a more effective enforcement regime under the e-Day licence system, introduced in November 2009. Previously, OPC owners had to buy a paper permit and display it on the car's windscreen before driving. Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/...w-high-20130714 ----------------------------------- lesser OPC on the road..but 19 times more offences! this is uniquely Sinkapor

  13. Mindless money printing- the S$308.4032B reason why Singapore inflation is so high nowadays. According to video 'Causes of inflation: Cost-push and demand-pull'[ ] Cost push inflation is input cost inflation caused by land, labour, capital, entrepreneurship- any increase in the cost of these factors increases the final product cost (i.e. an increase in CPI(Consumer Price Index)). Demand Pull inflation is caused basically by the demand upon certain goods, as measured by the number of dollars people are willing to wage to attain a certain product. In the general scheme of things, in so far that consumers and suppliers of goods and services (we are all participants in each part in our daily affairs) remain decent and honest persons, with the tendency to 'consume' measured by one's tendency to 'produce'(productivity)- then theoretically, there would be NO consistent CPI rise except the occasional isolated demand/supply imbalance due to natural disaster or war. But Singapore is quite insulated away from any significant natural disaster or war, so why has the average price of goods between 1989 (CPI=71.3) and 2009(CPI=100) increased (inflated) by (100.0-71.3)/71.3 = 40.25% over the 20 years?? [see Pict: 'Singapore Annual Inflation rate and CPI (1980-2012)/Singstat'] Studying the chart about 'Singapore Money Supply (DBU), M1,2,3, 1989 to 2012' for monetary supply changes between 1989 and 2009, one would easily note that M1 (Narrowly defined, money supply (M1) consists of currency in active circulation and demand deposits) M1 grew from S$13.7446B (1989) to S$93.4721B(2009)- a whopping 5.8fold increase over the 20years documented. (WRT to the M3 numbers of S$71.0078B(1989) vs S$378.5260(2009), the increase is a 4.33fold increase over 20 yrs) The official foreign reserves of Singapore between 1989 and 2000 are not available but according to 'Singapore official financial reserves (2001-2011)', the totals were S$139.7143B(2001) and S$308.4032B(2011)- amounting to a 1.207fold increase over the 10 year period (of course subject to variations in international currency exchange rates [SGD exc rt, 2001-2011]). According to 'Singapore Time Series on Population (Mid-Year Estimates)' using the 20 year interval where census were taken between 1990 and 2010, the local resident population increased from 2735.9K (1990) to 3771.7K(2010): a 37.86% Singapore resident population increase over the 20 years mentioned. Singaporeans have not become more lazy, on the contrary, according to 'Singstat: Trends in Productivity and Value Added by industry' 'total economy' (large olive green dot) productivity in Singapore has certainly increased between 1991 and 2011. Whilst currency exchange rates may be a proximate measure of the relative depreciation of a nation's currency relative to others due to the effect of over supply of one nation's currency as compared to that of another, it cannot be denied that all nations around the world, led by the USA, are into a conspiracy of freely printing money which is of course inflationary 'Chart: Estimated global monetary Aggregates (1971-2010)' - the chart showing an approx 3 fold increase in world M3 money supply between 1989 to 2009. Thus in 'Singapore's inflation may remain elevated for years to come: survey' [CNA, 24Jan2013] "survey by the Singapore Management University (SMU)... composite five-year-expectation is 4.97 per cent" Guess Singaporeans are all victims of a world wide government conspiracy to keep them always working (savings are always eroded by inflation) till the day they die, and also in power (the SG govt has S$308.4032B(2011) alone in foreign reserves and gold). So moral of the story is that governments all around the world should stop printing so much money to keep inflation under control and voters need to demand so (so as to safeguard one's retirement years). Guess in Singapore, recent curbs upon car loan and housing loan quantum(s) are merely cosmetic changes meant to fudge inflation statistics yet do minimal to improve the lives of the poor and downtrodden. Perhaps the Singapore government could lead the way forward by firstly not printing so much money which only breeds inflation if not hyper inflation as the population growth within a limited land area can only be so much. Perhaps the Singapore government could start the discussion by explaining to the populace what it intends to do with its SGD 308.4032B(2011) in foreign reserves (should be more by now), and please be reminded, that convenient half truths by Ministers really do not help. 16. Hi all, There's something that simply baffled me. I have a ALPINE ICS-X8 (7' Head Unit) that is able to display resolution up to 800x480. I have also installed add-on GPS (RoadNavi with Papago Map). Unfortunately, the add-on GPS map resolution is so lousy (480x234) and the map display is not sharp. Upon query, they replied that they use Low Resolution Driver for GPS input to the Alpine Head-Unit..... Tried googling but couldn't find any answer....... Is there really such thing, i.e. High resolution Head Unit but uses Low resolution driver for GPS input ??!!! In another words, as long as I have this Alpine Head Unit, I will continue to have a low resolution GPS display regardless of the add-on unit ? Thanks.
  17. :o :o River Valley High principal assisting in CPIB probe Posted: 19 December 2012 1838 hrs Click to enlarge Photos 1 of 1 inShare 26 SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Education (MOE) has redeployed the principal of River Valley High School Mr Steven Koh Yong Chiah. This comes after MOE received information by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) that Mr Koh is assisting in its investigations. MOE has appointed Mrs Teo Khin Hiang as the new principal of River Valley High, with effect from 20 December 2012. Mrs Teo, 54, is an experienced senior education officer. Prior to her stint at STAR, she had held appointments as cluster superintendent and principal of three schools - Chua Chu Kang Secondary, Pasir Ris Crest Secondary and Commonwealth Secondary. A ministry spokesperson said MOE will work closely with Mrs Teo and her team at River Valley High to ensure that school activities and programmes continue to be carried out smoothly in the best interests of the students. MOE will be redeploying Mr Steven Koh to MOE HQ as principal (special projects). The spokesperson added that MOE is unable to comment further on the case, as investigations are ongoing. - CNA/ir http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1243583/1/.html

  21. Hi, All My wheel (Cat B) is reaching its 10th yr nxt Jun. And dun think COE will come done in the next 2yrs (end 2014 maybe). Bcos I had spent great efforts & loads $ to maintain the car, it still looks brand new inside out (yes, how stupid of me). I dun mind about the price of car body, but rather the $ to put it on the road for use . . . . Please advice on a step-by-step guide to obtain the open COE for the abovementioned? Does it require inspection, insurance etc? Finally, is it worth it ???
  22. I am sure most have gone through the process of buying used cars, surfing sgcarmart for days etc. For you , would you pay more for a lower mileage car or price is most important? Let's use a simple example: A) 5 year old car , 50,000 km, $50,000 B) 5 year old car , 100,000 km , $40,000 Which would you choose? Especially those guys that have chosen either way, can you share your views 1-2 yrs after making your choice. Would you make the same choice again in hindsight?
  23. so more FTs/FWs will mean higher growth? I think this logic is flawed it's true that many SMEs suffer when the foreigner supply is tightened but during the good times, when these SMEs expand, they employ more foreigners so actually we are becoming a nation that is addicted to FTs/FWs... we (our economy) cannot live without them once the supply is reduced or cut, we suffer like drug addicts this, obviously, is not the way to go the govt must explore ways to switch our main economy model to keep us going for the next 20 years no use to keep "reminding" (or brainwash) us that we need FTs/FWs
  24. Just like to know if anyone would buy a high depreciation car in future? Let's say currently COE for CAT B @ 85K and new car price selling 200K. If this car go on sale in approx 4yrs time and selling 100K in the yr 2016, would you buy it? Just example, If the COE has drop to 30K in yr 2016 for CAT B, will you consider used car or new?
