  3. Really WTF to the max !!!!???? A passenger overslept on an SBS Transit bus and then took over the wheel to drive himself home. The incident happened on January 8, 2013, from 9.06pm to 9.24pm at Buona Vista bus interchange when a 27-year-old man without a licence took another bus from the interchange to drive home, reported Lianhe Wanbao. The bus was found at a bus stop along Commonwealth Avenue near Holland Avenue through the use of the global positioning system (GPS). It was empty and not damaged in any way. On Thursday afternoon, the tour guide who had driven the bus home admitted to three charges which included stealing a bus worth $300,000, operating a bus without possessing a class 4 licence and not having a third party insurance cover while doing so. He was sentenced to nine months and two weeks in prison and will be suspended from driving for a year. The man had boarded the bus around Little India and had fallen asleep during the journey. The bus driver did not notice his sleeping passenger upon reaching the interchange. When the man woke up, he alighted from the bus and boarded another which still had the keys in the ignition. He then drove the bus home. In his plea, the man said he just wanted to reach home safely. The bus was found to be missing when the bus driver returned from his break. This is reportedly the first case in which a bus has been stolen here. The man could have been jailed up to seven years and fined.

  10. UNITED Overseas Bank (UOB) has introduced a home loan that spans half a century - likely the longest-term loan available here. UOB introduced this longer loan duration as more customers have been requesting for such loans. However, these loans come with conditions. 'This type of loan is applicable to private residential and HDB loans only,' said Ms Chia Siew Cheng, UOB's head of secured loans and personal financial services. As well, borrowers above a certain age are not eligible, but UOB declined to say what the cut-off age is. And if the property is leasehold, it needs to have at least 35 years left on the lease at the end of the 50-year loan. Ms Chia noted that the loan has its pros and cons. Having a longer term 'will result in a smaller monthly loan instalment and will be easier on monthly cashflows. However a longer repayment period also means that more interest will be payable'. Financial adviser Damian Pang warned that by taking on such a long-term loan, the homeowner will be servicing the loan long into his retirement years. A quick check with other banks here found that the longest loan term was 40 years. At OCBC, for example, the maximum loan period for private and HDB homes is 40 years, or up to the age of 75 years, whichever is earlier. At HSBC, customers with at least $200,000 with the bank can get loans of up to 40 years. Others can receive loans of up to 35 years, at the most. Even then, most customers opt for loans of just 30 years, said Mr Harmander Mahal, HSBC Singapore's head of customer value management. Only about 1 per cent of customers take up the 40-year loans. Longer-term loans require the borrower to pay a smaller sum each month. This gives consumers the confidence to purchase new homes, and could help to keep prices buoyant, said Mr Ku Swee Yong, the chief executive of International Property Advisor. 'It improves affordability, which means it is good for the housing market in general, not just developers.' Homeowner Edward Ti, 28, said he would certainly take up a 50-year loan for an investment property. 'I would take a 50-year loan if interest rates are low. I would think that it is more efficient to use the money saved from the monthly mortgages to do something else.' If a borrower takes out a 50-year loan for $1 million at an interest rate of 1.7 per cent, he would have to pay about $2,475 monthly for his mortgage, compared with $3,548 if the loan ran for 30 years. This is assuming a period of low interest rates. However, if interest rates rose, say to 3 per cent, the $1 million 50-year loan would mean monthly repayments of $3,220. [email protected] Paving the way for obscenely overpriced HDB flats. Be prepared to pay 1 million for a 4/5 Room HDB flat soon. So it's total slavery to your flat and many have to work till their last day with no retirement.

  13. Link: 10 cities where homes cost less than a car ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Things are not getting better everywhere. That's one of the themes in the 247WS.com story that points to 10 American cities where homes are cheaper than many new cars. The list spans across the nation from Florida, to New Jersey to Ohio. But Michigan catches the brunt of the poorly priced real estate market, with Detroit taking the best of the worst honor by having the median listing price is $21,000 for a house, according to Trulia.com. That kind of change might get you a Chevy Cruze or Hyundai Elantra. A new midsize sedan in the driveway should not cost more than the house it's parked next to. In reverse order, here's the list and the city's median price for a home. Sadly, it's easy to pick a vehicle that costs more than any of these prices. 10. Port Richey, Florida: $59,900 9. Holiday, Florida: $59,900 8. Youngstown, Ohio: $57,550 7. Dearborn Heights, Michigan: $55,000 6. Whiting, New Jersey: $52,450 5. Warren, Michigan: $49,900 4. Redford, Michigan: $40,000 3. Gary, Indiana: $39,900 2. Flint, Michigan: $31,950 1. Detroit, Michigan: $21,000 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These are not the most glamorous places, but its an option, & note these are houses, not apartment. Making the money we pay so much for a pigeon hole looks silly. No wonder why so many people like to go USA. Can pay house in cash....lol. Actually, you can pay a house & a car in cash also. 17. I am staying in a Condo on the west of Singapore and my home is fast becoming a little Philippines .... So many units are rented to foreigners, I feel that I am like the minority. Spoke to the security and they were complaining about the foreigners .... and they still prefer the locals. I heard stories of them throwing empty beer bottles into the pool, pang sai on the urinals etc etc. Very very poor social behaviour. It seems better to stay in a HDB now ...... at least the rental is regulated/controlled. Thinking real hard about moving out ... and I am just wondering what it the situation with the other condos. Any feedback ?

  20. Quite sad to learn of this. Cases of the elderly being basically abandoned by their kids at these nursing homes are reported to be on the rise. The report also mentioned that these aged parents being forsakened by their children did not want want go to the Small Claims Tribunal or resort to the Tribunal for the Maintenance of Parents because they were ashamed to be left there in the first place and did not want to further embarrass themselves to seek outside help. Granted some families genuinely faced financial difficulties or have strained relationships with their elderly but to dump them at the elderly homes is really not the right thing to do. One particular case was brought up which a local Singaporean even abandoning his mum at a JB nursing home and refused to pay up or pick up phone calls from the nursing home (Check out the embedded video from 1min 38s onwards). In the Chinese news, he was interviewed and claimed his two sisters would pay up and that he did not give two hoots what others thought of him as long as he live a happy life. From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1208889/1/.html Cases of families defaulting on nursing home payments on the rise By Vimita Mohandas/Lip Kwok Wai/Wee Leng | Posted: 20 June 2012 2123 hrs SINGAPORE: Some eldercare facilities in Singapore are seeing more cases of families defaulting on their payment and also facing the challenge of trying to contact family members. About half of the 110 patients at Lee Ah Mooi Old Age Home have defaulted on their payments, which ranges from about one to two months. To help these financially strapped families, the home works out instalment plans and even offers subsidies, but more often than not its hands are tied as families are just not able to fork out the expenses. Some remain uncontactable, simply abandoning their loved ones. The home said it has tried to seek help from the Small Claims Tribunal and the Tribunal for the Maintenance of Parents, but it is not as easy as it seems. Manager of the Lee Ah Mooi Old Age Home Then Kim Yuan said: "We as a caregiver of the patient can help apply for this tribunal (The Maintenance of Parents Act), but we have to be authorised by the patient or by the parents. "Unfortunately, most of the time we don't get the permission because to them, it's a shame to be abandoned in the nursing home. If they were to force their children to pay for the expenses, they will feel even more embarrassed". Mr Then added that the process at the Small Claims Tribunal is also long and tedious and family members usually do not turn up for these sessions. The home also feels that the small fee that they have to fork out for the mediation process is not money well spent. This problem has also spread across the causeway to the Comfort Ville Home nursing care centre in Taman Johor Jaya. Representatives from the home said they have tried to contact Singaporean Joseph Tay, whose mother was admitted in March. The home alleges that Mr Tay owes them 6000 ringgit. Staff-in-charge at Comfort Ville Home Goh Ker Xin said: "When we admit a patient, we will collect a one-month deposit from the patients' families. However, Mr Tay said he couldn't afford it and we still decided to help him. But he hasn't come back to visit his mother and has disappeared." Mr Tay, who is unemployed, said he could not afford the bills and that his siblings would settle the expenses. Responding to queries from Channel NewsAsia, the Ministry of Health said it does not condone the abandonment of patients in residential healthcare institutions, such as nursing homes or hospitals. "We are saddened to see such occurrences," a ministry spokesperson said. "In such situations, institutions will engage the family on an amicable resolution, such as financial assistance through subsidies, Medifund, charity dollars or payment by installations. "The Maintenance of Parents Act can be exercised by elderly patients to pursue his/her child for maintenance, should such an unfortunate situation occur." - CNA/wm
  21. The woman behind the downfall of two home team chiefs may have been exposed. The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) is currenly investigating the former chiefs of the Singaporea Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) for having an intimate relationship with a female IT procurement executive. Netizens may have finally exposed this mystery woman, in a photo circulating on the internet. The woman, named as Cecilia, appears to fit the description of the mystery woman, who was reported to be 36-year-old, tall, slim, vivacious, and with shoulder length hair. The woman in the photo is also indicated as "Formerly from Hitachi and IBM, and now with Oracle". While this appears to fit her profile as an IT executive, Oracle Singapore is one of the companies that had clarified in late January that none of its employees are involved in this case. There is no other information provided on the depicted woman and it remains to be confirmed whether she is indeed the mystery woman in the case involving the home team chiefs. http://staticc01.insing.com/images/c1/76/0.../pc_600x450.jpg From my reliable source, this cecilia indeed working in Oracle.
