  1. Feb 17, 2011 Father gets jail and cane for burning his kids' buttocks By Elena Chong A SECURITY officer was given 48 months' jail and eight strokes of the cane on Thursday for burning the buttocks of his two young sons and subjecting them various forms of ill-treatment. The 26-year-old father of three had admitted to nine charges committed at his home between October 2008 and August 2010. Seventeen other charges were taken into consideration. The court heard that the accused had been taking care of his children at home while his wife went to work. The first time he caused hurt to his then five-year-old son was in October 2008, when he burnt him on the buttock with a hot ladle. The following year in 2009, he came home and found some burnt tissue paper in his ash tray and believed that the victim had played with his lighter. He decided to teach him a lesson by lighting the tip of his lighter and pressed it on his buttock. In 2010, he slapped and punched the boy on his arm and used a shoe to hit him for climbing the window grille. Months later, he lashed him with a telephone cable, for messing up the house. Among the abuses he inflicted on his younger boy were to tie him to a pipe in the toilet on two occasions in 2010, to stop the four-year-old from damaging items at home or hurting himself. When the boy was 3 1/2, he had burnt his buttock with the tip of a lighted cigarette, for wetting the newspapers. District Judge Ronald Gwee agreed with the prosecution that deterrent sentences were appropriate in view of the aggravating factors. He said the various acts of the accused over a prolonged period were rather cruel involving the use of lighted cigarettes, a hot ladle and spatula to burn the victims' buttocks. The accused could have been jailed for up to seven years on each count of hurting with a heated substance. For ill-treatment, he could have been fined up to $4,000 and/or jailed for up to four years on each charge. Have children for the sake of having them, dunno how to love and protect them. Give him a life sentence oso no diff.

  4. Hi all, I'm someone who loves to enjoy regular weekly massages with my wife. We often enter JB for them, last time used to go to cheap and good but low vehicle security areas for thai massage. Now we found a good place with Chinese massage, would say it is much better as instead of using a wooden stick. These chinese masseuse have better massage quality control, low variation of techniques, only difference is whether hands are big or small and strength wise. Parking is a breeze as there are security personnels there who look after your car, either that or multi-storey carpark, much better than those small lanes. Made a few nice friends there also, the masseuse are all good to chat with if you know your mandarin well. I buy their 10 plus 2 free package, super cheap. Wife and I love the jaccuzi and sauna and free buffet food for all. Any one else who frequent JB for massages near the causeway have any recommendations? Please share. This place i go to is called Jiafu Spa, anyone knows too?
  5. Really don't understand. Why do some parents allow their kids to shriek away like some banshees and turn a blind eye. Am not referring to infants who cry for milk because other than crying, they wouldn't otherwise have other means to communicate their needs. Am referring to children who already can at the very least, understand basic instructions. And it is evident that some of them shriek on an intentional basis. Really annoying.
  6. Something interesting to share but can anyone confirm that Bill Gates really said all these? Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world. Rule 1 : Life is not fair - GET USED TO IT! Rule 2 : The world doesn't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself. Rule 3 : You will NOT make $ 60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both. Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a BOSS. Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it "OPPORTUNITY". Rule 6 : If you mess up, it's NOT YOUR PARENTS' FAULT, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them. Rule 7 : Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now..... They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room. Rule 8 : Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in REAL LIFE. Rule 9 : Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time. Rule 10 : Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs. Rule 11 : Be nice to NERDS. Chances are you'll end up working for one.....
  7. dear all, as per topic, anybody able to help me? thanks in advance
  8. Hi all, Is enrolling a popular or so called elite primary school a necessity for parents? Is it more for networking or ease of enrollement to the affliated seconday schools later? I was from one of those so-called elite primary and secondary school but I don't impose on my kids to go to these schools. To me, all primary schools are the same, PSLE, what is the big deal in today society? I think it is more like the MIW system is taking its tolls..i.e. you want to become a minister, you better go to the elite school now. Do you think, parents are doing it for face or for the kids? Regards,
  9. I went to About.com and they got some hints on how to teach kids ride a bike. I think Kianbeng's earlier idea of dismantling the pedals is a good one. Actually, we should buy a kid bike but as the shop uncle to remove the pedals. Yes. REMOVE THE PEDALS. Can add on later. Have the kid push the bike around as a toddler. Confirm will push both feet off and roll around. You have let your kid conquer the skill of balancing. For older kid, use this video. I find it very good. For adults also very good. The thing is to roll down first. Grass softer to land but if on hard ground, choose a place with a gentler gradient. Later you add pedaling, then straight line riding then turning.. All are documented here. http://www.ibike.org/education/teaching-kids.htm Of course there are some products if you all like to use. It is listed on the site. But trust me. The skirt wheels does not inspire confidence. The way I look at this program from iBike, 10 days is all it takes to ride a bike from human being aged 7-65.

  13. Hi all, Recently researching on kids bike - planning to get another one as my kids outgrown the smaller 12" bike. Maybe 16" bike is the next step. Checked out a few hypermart and small bike shops and realised that kids bike can cost more than small MTB and the quality is damn bad. ie, 16" kids bike at $80+ but a small mountain bike is having promo at $79.90 and of course the parts of the MTB such as V Brakes are much better than the plasticky and stiff brakes on the 16" bike. I remembered when I was young, my small bike quite good quality but seems like nowadays it's impossible to find such bikes anymore, even if that means paying much more than those small MTB. Feel like buying the small MTB but too big for my kids lah. Also feel kinda wasted that few years ago I threw away my old dia-compe alloy brakes. Should have kept them and install on my kids bike. Any advise? I'm sure there'ld be fathers here who went thru exactly the same process?
  14. Yet another piece of crappy news...some parents really dont deserve to have kids... http://sg.news.yahoo.com/cna/20091209/tap-...so-231650b.html Man jailed 18 months for slashing son Channel NewsAsia - Man jailed 18 months for slashing son SINGAPORE: In a rash act to stop his son, who has special needs, from quarrelling with his sister, the man swung a chopper at the teenager. On Wednesday, Ong Chee Seng, 53, was sentenced to 18 months
  15. How much allowance or pocket money do you give them? On weekly or monthly basis? I'm interested in a gauge for my teenage nieces and nephews, cos my friends' niece and nephew seems to get a lot more than mine. Story is, a friend's niece gets $350 A WEEK for allowance. She's 17 years old in JC. She's a pretty obedient kid, goes out once in a while but has a very bad habit. She likes branded stuff. Hence the request for highweekly allowance I'm not too sure whether i heard my friend correctly, but he said his brother and his wife aren't the flashy type and don't indulge much in designer labels. So they dunno where she got expensive taste from. She's a smart kid, so her grades are like top few in her JC (cant say which). She just celebrated her birthday at a hotel with her own pocket money (she saved up, but it's not hard given the amount she gets a week). Only catch is that her $350/week covers EVERYTHING. Her food, clothes, parties, outing expenses, presents for friends, stationery, school supplies, taxi rides, everything except for school fees. But somehow I don't think those stuff count for much given her $1400 per month "salary". She has a brother who's 12 years old. He gets a lot less, but my friend (and I) still think it's too much for a 12 year old. His 12 year old nephew gets $350 a month - which my friend heard, half of which goes into a fixed deposit account. This younger one got some behaviour problems in school, but again, naturally smart. Good grades though never study. Friend's brother is quite well-to-do, very down to earth kinda guy. Cheap watch, cheap clothes. Wife also same. Two cars. One's a BMW 5 series, the other is a Golf. So quite humble for their income level. Wife quit job to look after kids. Saw them before. Wife looks pretty but very decent person. No flashy clothes. but somehow they spend all on their kids - as far as I can see from meeting them a few times. So how much do you give your kids every week/month? How old are they? How much more would you give when they reach what age?
  16. Take away - keep your kids in booster seats for as long as possible! At least till they are 4 feet, 9 inches, or 1.45m (!). http://www.reuters.com/article/healthNews/...Name=healthNews NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Children younger than 12 are at heightened risk of suffering a spinal injury during a car accident -- possibly because standard seat belts often do not fit them properly, researchers report. In a study of children treated for car accident injuries at two Australian hospitals, researchers found that those younger than 12 were seven times more likely than their older counterparts to sustain a serious spine injury. All of the 72 children and teenagers in the study had been restrained at the time of the accident. The higher spine-injury risk before age 12 "may reflect the adequacy of seat belt fit," the researchers report in the Archives of Disease in Childhood. Because standard adult seat belts do not fit smaller children properly, experts advise parents to use car booster seats for children who have outgrown traditional child safety seats. "However, in most countries the uppermost design mass of boosters effectively limits booster seat use to children up to the age of approximately 8 years," write Drs. Julie Brown and Lynne E. Bilston of the University of New South Wales in Sydney. These findings suggest there is room for improving seat belt fit for older children, Brown told Reuters Health. And that, she explained, means modifications to both seat belts and the seats themselves. Studies show that most rear-seat passengers are younger than 18. But Brown said that rear-seat cushions are too long for many children, even older ones -- which causes them to "slouch" in order to bend their knees over the front of the seat. That, in turn, can upset the proper positioning of their seat belts. The shoulder strap, Brown noted, should pass over the shoulder and center of the chest, while the lap belt should cross low, over the hip bones. "Vehicle manufacturers need to design the rear seats of their vehicles so that this is achieved and maintained during a crash," Brown said. For now, she advised parents to use car booster seats for as long as possible -- until they are about 4 feet, 9 inches and can sit comfortably with their knees over the front of the seat, without slouching. Some older kids may be relatively short but too large for most booster seats. Brown noted that some seats are designed with different shapes that may be a better fit for older children. 19. Last time when I am studying there is no such thing like traffic jam outside school or early morning traffic jam cos we go to school ourselves. Even those whom stay far away will wake up at 5:30am and catch the first bus to school. But nowadays even stay near near also must parent fetch. Why can't they just let their kid go school themselves? Next time I got kids I also wun fetch them to school. Last time go to school I need to wake up early, grow up liao if I still have to wake up early accompany my kid to school then very stupid right. Whole life got to wake up early then life is meaningless. Haizz

  21. Some cut, fold and stick optical paper illusions. A healthy alternative to excessive TV. Basically the head of the dragon seemingly follows the direction of your gaze. http://pontomidia.com.br/ricardo/greatweb/...per_dragon.html Demo here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xysjfkVRre4&NR=1 There are also other links to different versions of this same illusion. Following the news that a Malaysia born turned Sillypore citizen 2LT Kok ( coming from a average lower income family) willingly sacrifice his life to save a Sillypore born green horn cxck-up recruit during a grenade throwing exercise... Would a true bred Sillypore born 2LT ( with a bright future ahead, going to the U after NSF) done the same , in the split of a moment?
  25. Drivers refuse to slow down at crossing for special ed kids http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/singapor...nt.jsp?id=32476 From the video it seems some of the cars appear to be travelling quite fast. Maybe they should just construct strips before the crossing and a higher hump.
