  5. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp...1040937/1/.html TOKYO: Embattled Toyota said Tuesday it is voluntarily fixing 1.3 million vehicles in North America for engine oil leaks but denied the campaign is a recall because it did not affect safety. "It is what we call a service campaign," said Toyota spokeswoman Mieko Iwasaki in Tokyo. For the past five months, she said, "we have been carrying out repairs step by step, sending letters to owners and dealers." The company had first informed North American dealers and car owners of the campaign in October and launched its third phase last week to voluntarily repair the defect, a crack in an engine hose. In an email statement received early Tuesday in Tokyo, the company said the problem "may cause oil to leak from the VVT-i oil hose producing abnormal engine noise and the oil pressure light to illuminate." "This is not a safety recall, and submitting a Defect Information Report to the (US) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is not required." Japan's biggest car maker has come under fire for its global recalls of more than eight million vehicles for accelerator and brake system defects, and has been accused of dragging its feet on making the safety flaws public. Toyota executives were due to face a US Senate panel grilling later on Tuesday after company president Akio Toyoda last week apologised in a US House hearing and did the same in Beijing on Monday. The Toyota spokeswoman in Japan said the company had already repaired free-of-charge 342,200 Avalon, Camry and RAV4 models and 374,000 Lexus ES 350 and RX 350 vehicles in the United States. In the latest phase of the US campaign started on February 22, she said, Toyota wrote to owners and dealers of 128,800 Avalon and 89,000 RAV4 vehicles, asking them to bring their cars in for the one-hour repair job. "Separately in Japan we announced in October the repair of 45,000 vehicles for the same cause. The models include the Harrier and Estima," she said.

  8. Source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp.../364483/1/.html Qantas jet forced to turn back after hydraulic leak Posted: 02 August 2008 1609 hrs SYDNEY: A Qantas 767 was forced to return to Sydney on Saturday after taking off when the pilot detected a hydraulic leak, the airline said, denying reports the jet made an emergency landing. In the third safety scare involving Qantas aircraft in just over a week, the airline said the Manila-bound flight with 200 passengers on board landed at Sydney Airport about 3:00pm after the problem was detected. "It landed without incident after the captain became aware that the aircraft had a hydraulic leak," a Qantas spokeswoman told AFP. "It was not an emergency landing." The Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Sky News Australia and Australian Associated Press all reported the incident involved an emergency landing. On July 25, a Qantas Boeing 747-400 en route to Melbourne from Hong Kong was forced to make an emergency landing in Manila after it developed a large hole in its fuselage. Then last Monday, a Qantas 737-800 was forced to return to Adelaide after a landing gear door failed to retract. Qantas said passengers were never in danger in the latest incident. - AFP/so
  9. Just asking if anyone knows anyone or anywhere that can test the car for power leakage or grounding problems? My sister's car recently fixed up ice but the aeroplane sound was VERY loud...we tried changing HU, changing speaker, changing AMP, changing RCA, even laied the cables above and tapped the ground direct from chasis and battery....still no use....tried all means until nothing left to try....so now i need to test the car for any power leaks... Or anyone else can think of any other possible reason? It's not a typical aeroplane sound alone...it's a loud buzz plus aeroplane...event he audio shop also blur dunno what is causing it.... We manae to suppress it temp using noise suppressors...but eventually i wanna find out the real problem...
  10. On Sat, I was placing my car on the hoist at Teo Hin Tires and I was looking under the car cos the previous day at Park Mall, my car's right centre beam "sat" on the top edge of the car park for a short moment, thus I wanted to check the damage (luckily non). But I saw other stuff like some oil around my gear box. Upon closer inspection, my friend and I noted that the gasket had not been well seated when the mechanic was doing my gear box the last time around for servicing. Here's a look at the gear box after we self-disassembled the top portion of it. Inside Car Shot [inline GearBox_Top.jpg] Under Car Shot (see the black oil stains) [inline GearBox_Bottom.jpg] Look at the face of my friend after we had taken out the gasket and fabricated a new one for it (old one in his right hand with the torn top section). [inline Leonard_Frowns.jpg] Thanks to the following for having lended a hand in helping to get the gasket fix:- My good friend Leonard from Australia who helped me get the gear box shifter top opened (it takes two people to do it) My long time army friend, Vincent, for lending me the use of his hoist at Teo Hin Tires for the good part of the afternoon Ah Shiong of Imperial Powershop for having responded very willingly to help when I first called him to let him that I needed gear box oil. Patrick of Imperial Concepts for allowing me to use his gear box oil to top up the amount that had leaked out previously

  13. Gents...here's some pics of the leaks I've been trying to fix on my Nissan Sunny 1.5 ES Auto. Have been an eye opener and enjoyable so far. PSF Leak Pic1: See the drops of PSF at the pump. Shot is blur but taken from undercarriage. Shot taken before fix. Pic2: Hose tightener installed FOC. Tightener is between PSF reservoir and pump. See the greasy parts. Hope this fix works. I am monitoring this now. Engine Oil Leak Pic 3/4: Not sure if this is a leak or normal grime. Anyone can confirm.
  14. Leak on mobile camera locations? It's fine with us, say Traffic Police HAS there been a leak about where the police are likely to set up mobile speed cameras? An e-mail message has been going around, warning motorists about certain roads. But the Traffic Police feel that's not such a bad thing, if it makes drivers more careful. The e-mail lists 11 locations, two of them as 'verified'. It was not known who 'verified' this or how. As these cameras are portable, they can be set up on any road. They are supported by a tripod stand and can easily be hidden from view as they are not bulky. A policeman standing anywhere along the road can operate the equipment by himself. Using laser technology, the cameras detect speeding vehicles and capture images of the vehicle. Police spokesman ASP Victor Keong would not say if the list was authentic. But it does help, as drivers would observe the speed limit on the roads they think have mobile speed cameras, said the Traffic Police. The commander of the Traffic Police, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Teo Kian Teck, said: 'That (sharing of information) itself is an indication of our enforcement impact. Traffic Police cannot stop them from sharing such information. 'If that sharing leads to better driving behaviour, we are totally fine with that. Ultimately, our aim is not to catch people but to deter them from speeding. We hope motorists will realise that speeding kills and that their time on the roads will be better spent being mindful of others rather than being focused on avoiding detection.' The Traffic Police have stepped up enforcement in the last two years. Last year, 130,385 traffic summonses were issued to motorists, compared with 106,903 in 2002. These were for offences like beating the red light and speeding. MORE SPEEDING TICKETS From January to March this year, 13,173 speeding tickets were issued, 3,271 more than in the first quarter of last year. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Teo said: 'We want to ensure greater compliance from motorists in their driving behaviour. The Traffic Police would like to send a strong message to road users that we are continually on the lookout for serious violators. We will not hesitate to (take enforcement action) against them and pedestrians too, as all road users need to be made aware of their actions on the roads. Their actions affect not only their own safety, but that of others. All play a part in road safety.' Hidden eyes - believe it or not Upper Serangoon Road, 9 to 11am ('verified') Farrer Road/Adam Road, 10am onwards East Coast Parkway after Bayshore exit, after 5pm Bartley Underpass Braddell Road, near the long pedestrian bridge near Singapore Press Holdings West Coast Highway, before the new McDonald's Tampines Expressway in both directions under the Tampines Flyover ('verified') Tampines Avenue 10 Along Jalan Boon Lay from Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE), towards Jurong Point at the junction of Chin Bee Drive Clementi Avenue 6 from Pan Island Expressway to AYE, just before entering the underpass at the traffic light junction of Clementi Loop Road along Orchid Country Club.
  15. Anyone can describe how does a leaky exhaust sounds like ? I've recently hear this "rattle" from my undercarriage that sounds like either metal vibration or exhaust leak. Problem is, it's pulsating as rev climbs, which make me suspect it's exhaust leak. However, on the other hand, I do not have any perculiar observation on the vacuum guage. Any help appreciated !
  16. My high pressure pipe has a small leak (can hear sizzling sound). Went to air con shop, pump gas and it leaked like mad ! BTW, It's in the engine bay. The workshop (not air con specialist) recommend me to change the entire pipe which cost quite a bit ! $200+ (inclusive labour) Am thinking, is there any possibility of self DIY patching up of the hole ? Since radiator also can use putty to patch, air con pipe should be no problem right ? Need help quickly ! Weather is too hot to go w/o air con !
  17. A couple of weeks ago, I started my car and drove off as usual. The problem is everytime I turn the wheels, I hear a terrible sounds coming from the front of the vehicle. I stopped the car and looked at the wheels hoping to spot any obvious but I couldn't. Eventually, I brought it to my regular workshop and had them take a look at it. My first suspicion is that after my 80k servicing a few days back, the mechanic accidentally loosened something or forgot to put something back. However, after a test drive around the vicinity of the workshop and a few looks at the engine bay, I was told that the power steering hose was leaking (the power steering oil container was empty) and it would cost quite a bit to replace (~$300). The part wasn't available so I had to wait a day which was fine. Eventually the hose got replaced and the problem went away for a couple of days. A week later, I just had this urge to check if the replacement was effective. Once again, the container was below the acceptable mark and was noticeably missing quite a bit of the power steering oil. I went back to the workshop again for another check but they couldn't find a leak. They topped it up again and asked me to check it regularly and to come back should the oil level drop again. After some deductions, I think the missing power steering oil went on to fill up the hose and it should be a normal situation. Am I right or should I rigorously check the level every now and then?

  20. Hello, Sad to found out that there is a very slight and slow leak from the joining lines of my engine block. 3 months I need to top up about 300ml of engine oil. I had my engine overhauled 2 year back due to gasket "burnt" and not sure why the engine leak problem. Can I use the engine "stop leak" product to solve this problem? TIA
  21. I was at the petrol station 3 weeks ago topping up the tank, left the station and found the fuel indicator actually showed '0' (empty). Thought the station pple cheated me but on second thought cannot be. So rushed to agent's service centre to check. Took them whole day to fix the problem. End up they found something wrong with the fuel pump and replaced a new one for me (mind me, i dun even know where the fuel pump located ). After that incident, my petrol consumption drop from average 10.5km/l to 9.5km/l for the subsequent 2 tanks, current one i dun even dare to look! different by 40km at half tank now. Was observing below the car whenever there is 'water' and found no petrol leak (obvious leak) so i suspect could be vaporised. Is this the case?? [:/]
