  1. Volkswagen is a brand that has undergone immense change in the past year alone, and its new identity is manifest in its new logo that embraces a new digital age. So being as curious as we are, we naturally decided to head down to the local Volkswagen showroom at 247 Alexandra Road to host a Facebook livestream for our second E-markdown, as well as to see what's up from a brand that is at the forefront of the many changes occurring through the industry. Thankfully, you now don't even have to bother with putting on a mask or dealing with check-ins to get your hands on the latest deals from Volkswagen Singapore, thanks to our live Facebook event, which allows you to shop for your favourite cars, and ask questions about them, from the comfort of your own home! You can catch the livestream, or any other future ones for that matter, simply by checking in or following sgCarMart's Facebook page! Regular MCF members would have also noticed the thread about upcoming sgCarMart and MyCarForum events on the Lite & EZ section, while Facebook users can easily register their interest for the event on sgCarMart and Volkswagen Singapore's Facebook page to get a notification when the stream goes live. Make sure you do not miss on any of our livestream events in the future! The duo that you'll recognise from our video reviews first introduced the Volkswagen Tiguan R-line. The SUV got to show off its many convenience features live on Facebook, from its unique cupholder design to its generous rear legroom and electric tailgate, features which are sure to impress anyone! To those that are still uninitiated, the R-line cars gives customers the option of adding a little sporty flavour courtesy of the Volkswagen R performance division, which is responsible for the firm's blistering performance products such as the Volkswagen Golf R. So in the Tiguan R-line you get added goodies such as the sports steering wheel, R-line exclusive front scuff plate, and the R-Line exterior styling package, allowing you to deck your SUV with a sportier look if desired. Those that commented with their most creative explaination as to they would buy a Tiguan while the car was presented also got a chance to win a $20 shopping voucher! And before we moved onto the second featured car, a brief introduction was also delivered for Volkswagen's new logo, which has been redesigned to be more modern and refined. Want to learn more? The full livestream is still available for those that missed it, so even those that missed it can still learn more about the brand here. And onto the Volkswagen Golf, our presenters both agreed on how ubiquitous the Golf is, making it a car that suits anyone, regardless of age or job! As with the Tiguan, those that commented with creative comments on why they would buy a Golf stood a chance to win their $20 shopping vouchers as well! At the end of the evening, three lucky winners were also picked as part of a lucky draw from all those that simply typed 'Volkswagen' into the chat and walked away with $100 worth of petrol vouchers! Then you've come to exactly the right place. Over the weekend of the livestream, all viewers had to to do was to key in the promo code 'ILOVESGCM' when shopping at Volkswagen's online store and they would have been able to redeem a $500 petrol voucher and a $500 shopping voucher when you put in your refundable deposit for a car. Viewers of the livestream also got to shop for both cars at livestream exclusive prices, with the Tiguan Highline starting at $154,900, and the R-line SUV for just $139,900! (List prices at $139,900 and $175,900 respectively). Those more interested in the Volkswagen Golf also got to enjoy massive discounts, with prices slashed to $107,900 for the Golf R-Line ComfortLine, and to $119,900 for the Golf R-Line HighLine! (List prices for both variants are $131,400 and $148,900 respectively). Even if you've missed the deals offered through the weekend, the online store prices are still as attractive as it gets, so why not hurry over to Volkswagen's online store to see what deals are still available to you, or better yet, head down to Volkswagen's showroom at 247 Alexandra Road to see the rest of Volkswagen Singapore's full range of cars yourself!
  2. Dear bros Can anyone advise on where I can these? I want those with roots that I can plant - not just those that you throw after the festive season. Thanks!
  3. As title suggests, the way we do our retail shopping is changing. Brick and mortar stores are failing. New malls are sprouting out in neighborhoods and even high profile ones like Jewel or Funan. But go to the established malls and you see the truth behind the retail trend. Footfall in malls are falling and that's because of the shift in the way shoppers' shop. First it was the physical retail store, then e-commerce in the form of websites (blogshops etc), after that Carousell took over and almost everyone I knew sold something online be it brand new or used. Now? The latest trend is Facebook Live Auction. This isn't something which recently started though. Facebook Live Auction has been around for a few years now but only in very recent times did it catch on in Singapore. Prolific sellers like Misshopper Boutique (S Hook Jiejie) whom recently found fame in the unique way she pitched her items to her viewers and also for being 'entertaining'. Subjective. Personally the very first few live auction house I started watching was maybe SG BlackMarket (presumably the first live auction house in SG). They stream every few nights a week for 3 to 4 hours at one time. They hawk electronics items, anime collectibles, action figures (Marvel, DC), Fortune Cat (Maneki Neko), Daruma etc. And the main point is, their items DO NOT COME CHEAP. I kid you not. A $15 item can close off at $50 or even more. They regularly close off their items in the $80 to $150 range, and that's per item. They're not cheap but people bid. Why? I would put it down to their auctioneer Lennon. He's funny and sarcastic and there are viewers who tune in just to watch him and subsequently get hooked on bidding too. After months of watching I never got down to bidding anything though I did try once for a Doraemon plushie. Their videos have since been deleted except for one of Lennon's. Maybe they're no longer in trend? https://www.facebook.com/SGBlackMarketXXX/videos/395633114360593/ So what's trending now? Mainly electronic/household items selling at really "cheap" prices. New auction houses are popping out almost everyday. I bought a few aroma diffuser, humidifier for really bargain prices. $10 Elehot Aroma Diffuser $10 Asakuki Essential Oil Diffuser $15 Aennon Cool Mist Humidifer $17 Riwbox Wireless Bluetooth Headphones Other popular items people regularly bid for: Sound bar especially brands like Taotronics Smart Plugs Mini Projectors Smart Weighing Scale Smart Watch IP Camera Wireless Earbuds Gaming mouse Gaming keyboard Wireless Doorbell Car Jump Starter In Car Camera Some other Auction Houses https://www.facebook.com/Lelong.Auction.Sg/videos/2144115009049043/ https://www.facebook.com/TheLadyboyAuction/videos/324970791741109/ Fresh Seafood Bidding??? https://www.facebook.com/firstmarketonlinebidding/videos/474163999817071/ It's crazy how we do so much research at times to find out about a product we're getting from a retail shop yet willingly part with our money to purchase Auction Houses products from brands we haven't even heard of, no idea the full specs/features of the product, doesn't come with warranty etc. And what's the catch though? A lot of these items are actually returned goods. Some may not come in boxes, some boxes may be damaged, some may be missing a controller inside etc. Hence the cheaper price you may be getting it for. Anyone of you here have bid for anything on Facebook before? What's worth it and what's not?
  4. no Huawei, no problem ... UK’s first 5G network taster goes live in six cities tomorrow The UK’s first 5G consumer mobile network is launching tomorrow in six cities. Mobile network operator EE will switch on the next-gen cellular connectivity in select locations in London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham and Manchester — promising “increased speeds, reliability and connectivity”. Though of course consumers will also need to have a 5G handset and 5G price plan, as well as being in the right location, to see any of the touted benefits. EE says it expects customers to experience an increase in speeds of around 100-150Mbps when using the 5G network — “even in the busiest areas” where network coverage extends. “Some customers will break the one gigabit-per-second milestone on their 5G smartphones,” it adds. Ten other UK cities are set to get a taste of EE’s 5G later by the end of this year, also in select, busier parts — namely Glasgow, Newcastle, Liverpool, Leeds, Hull, Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry and Bristol — with more cities planned to come on stream in 2020. While rival mobile operator Vodafone has said it will began its own rollout of a 5G network in July. Among the advantages for 5G that EE is pushing on its website to try to persuade users to upgrade are better connections in busy places (such as festivals or stadiums); faster download speeds to support movie downloads and higher quality video streaming; and a gamer-friendly lack of lag — which it bills as “almost instant Internet connection”. Whether those additions will convince masses of mobile users to shell out for an EE 5G device plan — which start at £53 per month — remains to be seen. Earlier this month the network operator, which is owned by BT, launched its first 5G Sim-only handset plans, and began ranging 5G handsets — from the likes of Samsung, LG, OnePlus and Oppo. Though not from Huawei. Last week it told the BBC it would pause on offering any 5G smartphones made by Chinese device maker Huawei — saying it wanted to “make sure we can carry out the right level of testing and quality assurance” for its customers. Huawei remains subject to a US executive order intended to dissuade US companies from doing business with it on national security grounds. And Google has been reported to have taken a decision to withdrawn some Android-related services from Huawei — raising question-marks about the future quality of its smartphones. (The Chinese company’s involvement in building out core UK 5G networks is also subject to restriction, with the government reportedly intending to impose limits.) EE says the 5G network it’s launching tomorrow is an additional layer on top of its existing 4G network — dubbing it “phase 1”. So this switch on is really a toe in the water. Or, well, a marketing opportunity to claim a 5G first. It describes it as a “non-standalone” deployment, saying it’s combining 4G and 5G to “give customers the fastest, most reliable mobile broadband experience they’ve ever had” — saying it’s planning to upgrade more than 100 cell sites to 5G per month, as it builds out 5G coverage. It will also expand its 4G coverage into rural areas and add more capacity to 4G sites — as 4G will remain the fall-back option for years to come (if not indefinitely). Phase 2 of EE’s 5G rollout, from 2022, will introduce the “full next generation 5G core network, enhanced device chipset capabilities, and increased availability of 5G-ready spectrum”. “Higher bandwidth and lower latency, coupled with expansive and growing 5G coverage, will enable a more responsive network, enabling truly immersive mobile augmented reality, real-time health monitoring, and mobile cloud gaming,” EE adds. A third phase of the 5G rollout, from 2023, is slated to bring Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications, Network Slicing and multi-gigabit-per-second speeds. “This phase of 5G will enable critical applications like real-time traffic management of fleets of autonomous vehicles, massive sensor networks with millions of devices measuring air quality across the entire country, and the ‘tactile internet’, where a sense of touch can be added to remote real-time interactions,” EE suggests. As we’ve said before, there’s little call for consumers to rush to upgrade to a 5G handset, with network coverage the exception not the rule, even as building out the touted benefits of so-called ‘intelligent connectivity’ will be a work of years.
  5. A woman in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) who was seriously injured in a car crash in 1991 has finally woken up from a 27-year-long coma. Munira Abdulla, then 32, had just picked up her 4-year-old son Omar from school when the car they were in collided with a school bus, reported local daily the National on Monday (Apr 22). While Omar was unharmed, Ms Abdulla, who had tried to protect her son from the impact, was left unconscious with a serious brain injury. Last year, Ms Abdulla, now 60, regained consciousness in a hospital room in Germany. “I never gave up on her because I always had a feeling that one day she will wake up,” said her 32-year-old son Omar Webair in an interview with the National. Ms Abdulla, who was taken to a local hospital after the accident, was later transferred to one in London where doctors diagnosed her to be in a minimally conscious state. She was then returned to the UAE where she was transferred several times due to insurance constraints. In 2017, Ms Abdulla was finally taken to a German hospital after the Crown Prince Court heard the family's story and gave them a grant. There, Ms Abdulla underwent surgery to treat her weakened limb muscles as well as physical therapy. Last June, Ms Abdulla was seen stirring in her bed when an argument broke out in her hospital room. “She was making strange sounds and I kept calling the doctors to examine her,” Mr Webair told the National. “They said everything was normal. “Then, three days later, I woke up to the sound of someone calling my name. “It was her. She was calling my name. I was flying with joy. For years I have dreamt of this moment, and my name was the first word she said.” Ms Abdulla is now receiving treatment in Abu Dhabi, where she is able to communicate “in a very reasonable manner”, said the hospital. “I shared her story to tell people not to lose hope on their loved ones,” Mr Webair said. “Don’t consider them dead when they are in such a state. “All those years, the doctors told me she was a hopeless case and that there was no point of the treatment I was seeking for her, but whenever in doubt I put myself in her place and did whatever I could to improve her condition.” Read more at https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/world/uae-woman-wakes-up-from-27-year-coma-after-car-crash-report-11472950 Miracle story to kick start this morning. In Singapore, this may not even be remotely possible no thanks to expensive healthcare bills. How comprehensive or rather how limited is our life insurance for coma patients? How many of us can afford to keep our loved ones alive for so long, with or without hopes of them even waking up? Then there are other deciding factors... What are the moral implications to deciding when to pull the plug for a coma patient whom is showing minimal signs of consciousness, on life support etc? Who is going to decide quality of life vs quantity of life? When is the right time to pull the plug? Is there ever a right time? Do insurance companies put pressure on hospitals or even doctors? This is a miracle case. It has given hope to families out there to keep the faith and not give up on their loved ones. But food for thought, how many of us would have been able to do the same? At 60 years old, she still has many good years to catch up on lost time with her family.
  6. would u live in a floating city? how much would u pay for 1? structurally it looks almost like our Supertrees/avatar trees in gardens by the bay. might entice our gahmen in that sense since tourism so impt to us in generating revenue. 10 years to build, EXPECTED to last 100 years. EXPECTED.... hmm...... Singapore could very well be building something that looks straight out of a futuristic Japanese anime series. What is the future of physical expansion in Singapore? One high-tech vision for Singapore is to create floating environmentally friendly cities made up of artificial islands in our immediate equatorial ocean. How big is a Green Float? It is going to be 1km in height. At that elevation, the temperature will be cooler at 26°C year-round. It will be constructed in the sea by utilising the buoyancy force of sea water. How expandable are Green Floats? Each Green Float cell is 1km to 3km, a walkable distance across and can grow outwards. How durable is a Green Float? Each Green Float would take about 10 years to construct. A Green Float will have a 1km-high tower and a base that is 3km in diameter. Once completed, it is expected to last 100 years. It is also built to float with the ocean current, so it doesn’t remain in one place and block out sunlight from penetrating the depths below. How much land does Singapore need? An additional 5,600 hectares of land are needed by 2030 to cater for a population of between 6.5 and 6.9 million. One hectare is 100 metres by 100 metres. The projection is based on Singapore’s Land Use Plan.Economic Development Board managing director Chng Kai Fong said Singapore is leaving no stone unturned to find solutions to physical expansion: “We’re using every possible surface and expanding our options.” Why is Singapore an ideal location? Singapore’s calm equatorial waters may be one of the best places in the world for them to construct a Green Float. How small is Singapore? Singapore is the 20th-smallest country in the world and the second smallest in Asia. Singapore has 724km² of surface area, less than half the size of London. What other options exist to expand land use in Singapore? The other options include building in the air, such as above roads, canals and existing structures. Currently, the city of London has projects that have seen additional housing units built on the roof of existing buildings that have been reinforced, potentially expanding the property market without touching existing land.

  12. P1 registration: Child must live at declared address for at least 30 months from July 2, 2015 Children who have secured places in primary schools under the home-school distance priority will be required to stay at the address for at least 30 months from the start of the Primary 1 registration exercise on July 2, 2015. -- PHOTO: ST FILE By Amelia Teng SINGAPORE - Children who have secured places in primary schools under the home-school distance priority scheme will be required to live at the address for at least 30 months from the start of the Primary 1 registration exercise on July 2. This new rule applies to children entering primary school next year. Previously there was no specific length of time set by the Ministry of Education (MOE). The ministry said on its website: "A child who gains priority admission into a school through his/her distance category is required to reside at the address used for registration for at least 30 months from the commencement of the P1 registration exercise on 2 July 2015." The ministry said that there are a small number of cases where families are unable to remain at the registered address for the entire duration of their children's primary school studies. Even so, a child who gains priority admission into school by distance must still abide by the new rule, it said. "If this condition is not met, MOE reserves the right to transfer the child to another school with vacancies, as the priority admission to the first school was based on the declared address used for registration," the ministry said. "The home-school distance category priority is given with the expectation that the family will reside at the address for the duration of the child's primary school studies, as it is for the convenience and interest of the child," it added. Families which have bought a yet-to-be completed property and plan to move in after it is completed, are required to live at the new address for at least 30 months starting from the time the family moves into the property. "For example, if the child registers in 2015 and only moves into the new address in July 2017, the 30 months stay period starts from July 2017," MOE said on its website. In March this year, a father who lied about where he lived to get his daughter into a top primary school was sentenced to two weeks in jail. The 35-year-old self-employed man, who cannot be named to protect his daughter's identity, pleaded guilty in February to giving false information to the school's principal on July 30, 2013. A charge of lying to a police sergeant 10 days earlier to change the address on his identity card was taken into consideration. The man had indicated his address as being within 1km to 2km of the brand-name school, when he registered his daughter under Phase 2C of the Primary 1 registration exercise in 2013. This allowed his daughter to secure a place. His identity card showed the same address, but the man actually lived in Balestier Road, which fell outside the priority radius. The address he provided belonged to his uncle's sister, and had been rented out. His subterfuge came to light when MOE visited the place. 14. https://sg.news.yahoo.com/blogs/singaporescene/top-30-things-to-be-thankful-for-if-you-live-in-013838692.html Scientific studies have found that you only need to do one thing: Be grateful. In the spirit of the holiday season, I thought it’d be a good idea to remind ourselves of what we have to be thankful for. My work is all about helping teenagers to become happy and successful – and gratitude is a big part of that. So I’ve listed 30 things to be grateful for if you live in Singapore, and if you’re reading this article. 1. Cheap and good food: Singapore has plenty of it. 2. 24-hour eateries: You never need to go hungry. 3. Greenery: Trees abound. You forget how nice this is until you visit other countries where there’s little greenery. 4. Singlish: We don’t usually think about how unique and amazing this language is! 5. No natural disasters: This is something we – or at least I – often take for granted. 6. Racial and ethnic diversity: This is one of the most special things about Singapore. 7. Religious freedom and tolerance: It’s nice how we all get along pretty well. 8. Internet access: You’re reading this, which means you have Internet access. (You’re in the privileged 40 per cent that does.) 9. You have a smartphone or a computer: These powerful tools are only available to a minority of the world’s population. 10. Connectivity: Referring to Points #8 and 9, you can communicate with people around the world instantaneously. 11. Opportunities for generosity: Referring to Point #10, you can potentially add value to millions of people through a blog post, video or podcast. The Internet allows us to be tremendously generous! 12. You can read: 774 million adults can’t, so let’s appreciate this gift. 13. In all likelihood, you went to school: Referring to Point #12, this probably means that you’ve had an education. (121 million children are out of education.) 14. Libraries: Singapore has more than 25 National Library Board libraries, where you can read thousands of books for free. 15. Endless ways to learn and improve: Referring to Points #8 and 14, if you want to learn about almost anything in the world, you can. You can improve yourself as long as you have the drive to. 16. Clean drinking water: You have access to clean drinking water (780 million people don’t.) 17. Electricity: You have electricity in your home. (1.3 billion people don’t.) 18. Clean streets: Thank you to all the hardworking people who keep our streets clean, every single day! 19. Nice public housing: In most other countries, you wouldn’t use “public housing” and “nice” in the same sentence. 20. Safety: It’s (generally) safe to walk the streets after dark. 21. Changi Airport: Our airport is so nice that people go there to hang out. There are few airports in the world where people do that. 22. Parks and beaches: We have plenty of well-maintained parks and beaches. 23. Clean government: No matter what your views are on the government, you’ll probably agree that, at least, it’s not corrupt. 24. Air-conditioned shopping malls: If you want air-conditioning, you can walk into any shopping mall. And we have a lot of shopping malls. 25. Air-conditioned public transportation: 97 per cent of public buses are air-conditioned, and so are our trains. 26. MRT and LRT: The train system works well (in general), and the network is expanding. Getting around is becoming even more convenient. 27. People line up at MRT stations: People line up when waiting for the train. I remember the time when this wasn’t the case! 28. We “chope” seats using packets of tissue paper: This practice is more remarkable than we give it credit for. 29. “Aunties” and “Uncles”: We call every somewhat old person either “Auntie” or “Uncle”. Visitors to Singapore find this curious, which reminds me that it’s a fascinating practice. 30. You’re alive: This is the most important one, because it means that you can make a difference to someone today. As Maya Angelou once said, “As long as you’re breathing, it’s never too late to do some good.” I don’t deny that we all face problems and challenges daily. But that doesn’t mean we can’t be full of thanksgiving. So for the rest of this month, I encourage you to write down just one thing a day you’re grateful for. I can almost guarantee that you’ll see an improvement in your mood and overall well-being. Wishing you great health and happiness this holiday season!

  19. Hi all I am kinda pissed that while other countries broadcast matches fer free we have to pay $112/-. I am already on a VPN and watch Hulu & Netflix movies fer free on my tv and devices. The VPN I use is PIA and fer a cheap $3-5 a month (depending on your plan) I get unrestricted access to servers and websites in US, UK, etc. But you can use any number of VPNs (Hide My Ass, Freedom etc). I have unsubscribed from Starhub fer over a year now and will never ever go back to them. And PIA allows me to load the VPN on upto 5 devices so I can use this on any PC or Laptop at home or on the run. The same concept applies if you wana watch worldcup fer free on your big TV. All you need to start off with is a VPN plan. You can refer to the below also for more details: http://www.flashrouters.com/blog/2014/03/19/how-to-stream-world-cup-2014-live-streaming-live-from-anywhere/ I loaded PIA VPN on my laptop and then sign up fer free for a Hulu & Netflix account and hook the laptop via HDMI to my HD TV. The picture quality is good enuff. Occasionally (very occasionally) there is a slight lag for HD movies but hey I am paying $5 a month so I wont complain. If there are any other bros who are already on a VPN do share your experiences so everyone can gain easy access to good content.

  21. http://sg.sports.yahoo.com/news/two-charged-english-football-fixing-probe-183113457--spt.html Two charged in English football fixing probe wo men with Singaporean nationality suspected of fixing matches in lower-league English football were charged with conspiracy to defraud on Thursday, prosecutors said. The men, alleged to be members of a Singapore-based illegal betting syndicate, were among six people arrested this week in an investigation by the recently-formed National Crime Agency (NCA). Chann Sankaran, a 33-year-old Singapore national, and Krishna Sanjey Ganeshan, a 43-year-old with dual British and Singapore nationality, will appear before magistrates in Cannock, central England, on Friday. A seventh man has been arrested and he and the four other men were bailed on Thursday, the NCA said in a statement. Sankaran and Ganeshan have been accused of conspiring to defraud bookmakers by influencing the course of football matches and placing bets on them between November 1 and November 26 this year. The maximum sentence for this offence is 10 years’ imprisonment. The NCA added their investigation was ongoing. Earlier, the Daily Telegraph newspaper said an undercover investigation by its reporters had triggered the probe by the NCA, Britain's answer to the FBI. No teams in England's lucrative Premier League are believed to be involved in the probe. A spokesman for the Football Association, the sport's governing body in England, said: "We have worked closely with the authorities in relation to these allegations. The FA will make no further comment at this time due to ongoing investigations." The Football League, which runs the three professional divisions below the Premier League, said they had not been contacted by the police. "The threat of corruption is something that the Football League and the other football authorities treat with the utmost seriousness," said chief executive Shaun Harvey. "The integrity of our matches and our competitions is the bedrock of the domestic game." In February, Europe-wide police agency Europol said it had found evidence of match-fixing in top international football matches and it had uncovered an organised crime syndicate based in Asia that was behind the operation. The biggest case of fixing in sport in Britain in recent years involved three Pakistan cricketers and a British agent who were jailed in 2011 for spot-fixing during a Test match against hosts England. The men were involved in pre-arranging no-balls for shadowy South Asian betting rings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30Y1zmLqfx0
