Last Saturday (11 feb) I was coming back from Malaysia via Tuas Second Link, a Mercedes (SXX212XX) with a white Volvo and a TP was speeding on highway, I was driving 88 to 90km/h and the Volvo suddenly appeared beside me asking me to slow down while the Mercedes drove pass me, their speed should be around 110 to 120km/h! I saw the same car with the same Volvo Escort car along Dunearn Road last month in the evening, the Minister must be staying near Botanical Gardens and he is heading home. Terrible isn't it?

  5. Tuck Yew ah Tuck Yew, pls answer to the question directly and not deviate from it....so what it costs transport operators more, they have sought for many fare increases from PTC and got the approval liao, what you mean by it will cost more??? if it really cost more, it shows that the management from transport operators, PTC, LTA and MOT are incapable, ineffective and inefficient in managing cost and serving the public. Travel concessions for poly students will cost transport operators S$28m (http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1177393/1/.html) SINGAPORE : Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew has said it will cost transport operators an additional S$28 million per year if polytechnic students are given travel concessions. He was replying to a parliamentary question tabled by Nee Soon GRC MP, Lee Bee Hwa. Over the past few years, polytechnic students have been lobbying for travel concessions which their counterparts in junior colleges enjoy. Mr Lui said 10 per cent of the average daily passenger ridership enjoyed student travel concession on trains and buses in 2011. This is about 2 per cent lower than in 2007. He however added that the percentage had actually gone down due to an increase in ridership.
  6. Yep another typical don't-know-how-lucky-you-are letter from a foreigner. Geee why are there an increasing number of such citizen-admonishing letters lately? Again to folks like them, being a cabinet minister here is a thankless job. Well for $1.1m, most inlcuding yours truly are willing to accept the "thankless" part. [laugh] http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_754518.html Ballot box answer to minister's salary Published on Jan 12, 2012 THE job of a politician is much more complex than that of a chief executive officer (CEO) of a private company ('Variable component' by Mr Kevin Kwek; Tuesday). A CEO is motivated purely by profits, even if it means axing jobs. A minister's task is multi-dimensional. He has to keep the economy on a sound footing, create wealth, jobs and infrastructure as well as look to security, to name a few. If a minister does not perform, vote him out - that is how the question of his salary should be resolved. I am from India on a long-term visit pass and I clearly see the distinction with which Singapore has been steered by its ministers. Singaporeans should be proud of the leaders they have had, and have, and reward them well for a job well done. This will encourage a fresh crop of non-corrupt, young, talented citizens to take up the thankless job of a minister. Marcel J. Misquith

  10. President Ong Teng Cheong (Asiaweek, March 10, 2000): "in January 1986 I did sanction a strike, the first for about a decade. It was in the shipping industry where the management was taking advantage of the workers. I did not even tell the cabinet about sanctioning the strike. And some of them were angry with me about that. The minister for trade and industry was very angry, his officers were very upset. They had calls from America, asking what happened to Singapore? -- we are non-strike. I said: if I were to inform the cabinet or the government they would probably stop me from going ahead with the strike. It only lasted two days. Then all the issues were settled. It showed that management was just trying to pull a fast one. So I believe what I did was right."
  11. Tan Kin Lian did a good job in check and balance on Law Minister's statements. He should be our champion of check and balance on the govt. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1145627/1/.html PE: Shanmugam clarifies comments on President's role SINGAPORE: Law and Foreign Affairs Minister K Shanmugam has clarified his comments made at a recent forum about how influential the president can be. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a community event, Mr Shanmugam said that there are many areas where the Prime Minister has the duty to make decisions. Although the President cannot direct the Prime Minister on these matters, he can give his views and his advice even in areas outside his Constitutional power. Mr Shanmugam said it is untrue that only Government endorsed candidates can be influential. "The quality of the advice will depend on the person giving that advice and a President who is wise, knowledgeable and experienced will obviously be more influential than another who doesn't have as much experience or as much wisdom," said Mr Shanmugam. Mr Shanmugam said the office itself commands respect and whoever holds the office must be given the respect due. And as the President is elected by the people, Mr Shanmugam said that the people's power to make the choice must be respected. Mr Shamugam also responded to comments made by several other Presidential hopefuls who disagreed with him on the Constitutional Role of the President. He said they are entitled to their views and felt it was not appropriate for him to comment further on their statements. Mr Shanmugam said: "If there are disagreements, as previously it has happened before, we can always get it resolved through the courts. When you have check and balance, you must expect that sometimes there might be differences in views. And if there are differences in views, we have a structure and system in place to deal with those differences."

  13. Since the PM & his cabinet colleagues have been emphasing that they will listen more to the ground just before & after the recent GE, I will like to seek my fellow MCFers' opinion on this. For me, I think it will be mandatory that the ED be completely independent from the executive, legislative or judiciary branches. Ideally the people there should be appointed from both public & private sectors maybe 1 year before the next GE. This is remove some concerns from people of the nagging feeling of the conflict of interest element which may influence how electoral boundaries are drawn before each GE so far. Even though I am not from Aljunied GRC, I certainly do not want it to be broken up in different wards come GE 2016. Your views?

  18. If you vote out a minister, you make PM's burden heavier: DPM Teo by Ng Jing Yng 04:47 AM May 06, 2011 SINGAPORE - It is seldom that a deputy appraises his boss but Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean last night gave a rare glimpse of the Prime Minister's dedication to the people and his exacting standards. Speaking at a PAP rally in Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, Mr Teo said: "Every moment, every minute he is awake, I know that he carries the burden of Singapore and Singaporeans very heavily on his shoulders. He works very, very hard." And the Prime Minister "meant every word he said" when he apologised for the Government's shortcomings during a lunchtime rally on Tuesday, said DPM Teo. "Because he (PM Lee) sets very high expectations for himself, too. And (when) we cannot fully meet your needs as Singaporeans, he is really disappointed and sorry as he said so," said Mr Teo. Calling on Singaporeans to vote the most able candidates into the Parliament so that they can help Mr Lee do his job, DPM Teo said: "When you say never mind, vote out a minister, everything will be all right

Another article also states that a trained Labrador retriever was more accurate than doctors in diagnosing bowel cancers, as high as 98% compared to 66% of human doctors . Do we have this technology in Singapore? That can drastically bring down medical costs I believe
