  3. Mitsubishi Motors showcases Ralliart concepts And aftermarket-tuned vehicles at 2004 Sema Trade Show Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. showcased Ralliart concepts based on its popular Galant sedan and Endeavor SUV at the 2004 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) tradeshow. With the unveiling of these Ralliart concept vehicles, the company marked its fifth consecutive year as an exhibitor at the SEMA show, the world's premier automotive specialty products trade event. Both Ralliart concepts were designed in Mitsubishi Motors' design center in Cypress, Calif. Mitsubishi Motors is displaying a total of seven vehicles in its booth, including the new Lancer Evolution MR and tuned versions of Lancer, Eclipse and Lancer Evolution. Mitsubishi models customized by other exhibitors also will be on display throughout the show. Ralliart is the motorsports arm of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation. Worldwide, Ralliart vehicles feature enhanced performance, specialty equipment and sporty styling elements, such as more powerful engines, sport-tuned suspensions as well as special fascia and styling treatments. Galant Ralliart Concept (Still ugly to me, IMHO) The Mitsubishi Galant Ralliart concept embodies the definition of a Ralliart model. The concept vehicle features the same powerful 3.8-liter MIVEC high-output, 260 horsepower (hp) engine that will be available on the 2006 Eclipse, as well as the coupe's 6-speed manual transmission. The Galant Ralliart concept vehicle sits on 19 by 8.5 Racing Hart F10 wheels, 245/40/19 Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires, Ralliart exhaust, as well as a custom cold air intake system and coilover springs suspension from Road Race Engineering. A rear stabilizer bar, front and rear strut braces, and Brembo's 4-piston brake kit (front) and custom cross-drilled rotors (back) complete the mechanical modifications. Regarding the Galant Ralliart concept exterior, PIAA driving lamps, show car-quality paint, a metal mesh grille with Ralliart logo, as well as custom-integrated rear spoiler, front and rear fascia and side skirt, immediately make it clear that this is a special ride. The Galant Ralliart concept also features a custom interior, including coordinated carpeting and leather. Comfort and appearance are enhanced with Recaro® front driver and passenger seats, Ralliart shift knob, and Logitech driving simulator steering wheel and pedal set. Even a Recaro® baby seat has been added for the enthusiast family man. Sparco race helmets, as well as 4-point race harness (two sets), driving gloves and driving shoes are all compliments of SuperAutobacs. Endeavor Ralliart Concept Mitsubishi Motors gave a similar Ralliart treatment to the Endeavor. The new 3.8-liter MIVEC high-output engine provides 260 hp, and the popular midsize sport utility vehicle rides on 20 by 8.5 Enkei LM1/5S wheels and 275/40/20 Falcon tires with a SuperAutobacs grounding kit. A five-speed automatic transmission, modified exhaust system and Road Race Engineering custom cold air intake and coilover suspension enhance performance, as do Brembo 4-piston brakes (front) and custom cross-drilled rotors (rear). Visually, the Endeavor Ralliart concept vehicle stands out by incorporating PIAA driving lamps with factory-tinted headlamps, show car quality paint, a metal mesh grille with Ralliart logo and custom front and rear fascia and side skirt. Inside the vehicle, drivers will appreciate a custom interior including coordinated carpeting and leather. Recaro® front seats, Ralliart pedals, Logitech driving simulator steering wheel and pedal set and a custom shift knob all contribute to an enhanced interior appearance. Knowing that the performance enthusiast demands the latest in technology, this Endeavor Ralliart concept is equipped with a Pioneer AVIC-80DVD navigation system and an Eclipse stereo system with speakers installed by SuperAutobacs. For pure fun and entertainment, a Sony Playstation 2 system running on a 30" Mitsubishi LCD monitor is also a key feature. 2004 Lancer Ralliart Another exciting vehicle featured at the Mitsubishi booth is a 2004 Lancer Ralliart, customized with a range of Mitsubishi genuine accessories available at any Mitsubishi dealership. This Lancer Ralliart exterior features body color-coordinated rear-wing spoiler with a graphite-look blade; acrylic hood protector and side window air deflectors; stainless steel scuff plates with Ralliart logo on the front door thresholds; and mirror-polished stainless steel accent for the tailpipe and roof spoiler with Vortex winglets to enhance appearance and reduce drag. Inside the Lancer Ralliart, sport meter gauges (voltage, temperature and vacuum) match the instrument panel; with aluminum sport pedals completing the package. Lancer Evolution MR Edition (YEE-HA!!!!!) Also at the Mitsubishi booth is a Lancer Evolution MR Edition, featuring a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder intercooled-turbocharged engine that delivers 276 hp at 6500 rpm. The MR Edition is the highest-performance, street-legal Lancer Evolution, with a newly-standard Active Center Differential and front Limited Slip Differential, which work with Sports ABS to create a more natural, better-mannered driving feel. Strong fin-design BBS® forged aluminum wheels are exclusive on the MR Edition, and the vortex generator at the trailing edge of the roof creates small vortices that reduce drag and increase the down force generated by the rear-deck spoiler. Styling inside the Lancer Evolution MR Edition is consistent with the exterior design: aluminum shift knob; aluminum and carbon fiber brake lever handle; aluminum pedals; sport meter gauge kit with three gauges (boost, voltage, oil pressure) clustered in the center stack; and a stainless steel plate embossed in red with the MR designation. Moriyama Concept Eclipse Several Mitsubishi vehicles tuned by other exhibitors are in this year's Mitsubishi SEMA booth. Among these is the Moriyama Concept Eclipse, the result of collaboration between Mitsubishi, Pepsi, RJ de Vera and Shawn Williams. This vehicle, an Eclipse concept vehicle customized with inspiration from Pepsi spokesmodel Eri Moriyama, has been touring the nation at all "Hot Import Nights" events. The Moriyama Concept Eclipse captures the eye immediately with its Lamborghini Diablo Pink paint job and carbon fiber accents. Sitting atop massive 20-inch Motegi Racing wheels and BFG Goodrich tires, the vehicle is tuned with full intake and exhaust systems, as well as a N/X direct port nitrous set up. Inside the Moriyama Concept Eclipse, comfort and entertainment reign with Sparco seats, steering wheel and shift knob. Seven television screens as well as an audio system featuring three subwoofers, three powerful amps and front and rear staging units complete this outstanding project car. Pepsi Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII (Taking things too far,IMHO) Another featured vehicle included the Pepsi Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII 2004 Sweeps Concept Car, a collaboration between Mitsubishi Motors, RJ de Vera and Pepsi. This special Lancer Evolution concept vehicle reinforces the Lancer's reputation for high performance and aggressive styling, with a variety of enhancements. A Veilside VS-GT full aero kit and Evo VIII VS-GT wing give the vehicle a cutting-edge, sporty appearance, as does a Versus Motorsports carbon hood and graphics from Auto Indulgence. Performance is boosted with a DC sports exhaust system, AEM intake system, Denso iridium power spark plugs and an Eibach suspension kit. Black suede-wrapped Recaro seats with matching panels and a carbon-style dash and power window trim package add extra flair to the interior of this Lancer Evolution concept car. The interior, which was customized by Street Concepts, also boasts a Veilside shifter and a full audio system with Pioneer CD/tuner head unit, Infinity front and rear stage speakers, Infiniti subwoofers and JBL amplifiers. AMS installed the audio system in a trunk enclosure with neon lighting.

  12. Even as Mitsubishi is undergoing a major rescue plan at home, engineers in the States have been busy testing the next Eclipse. Code name PS24S, the 2006 Eclipse is shown here looking considerably larger than the current model, and with styling cues taken from the Eclipse-E Concept which was first shown at the NAIAS this past January. Based on the Galant platform, the next Eclipse will arrive in time for the 2006 model year. The Galant, the Eclipse, and the Endeavor crossover ute are based on Mitsu's "Project America" platform; the Galant and Endeavor are built at the Mitsubishi facility in Normal, Illinois , where the Eclipse will be assembled as well.

  17. Source: Mitsubishi Cars For 2004, Lancer Evolution buyers may opt for leather front Recaro® seats, and they may opt for a 315-watt Infinity® sound system, complete with subwoofer. A limited number of brave souls may also opt for the latest trim level, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution RS. If the lightweight, turbocharged, all-wheel-drive Lancer Evolution was not the right car for you, then the Lancer Evolution RS is even less right. But for racing purists, compact car tuners and hard-core driving enthusiasts, the best bang-for-the-buck sports sedan just got better. Thanks to numerous weight-saving measures, the Lancer Evolution RS tips the scales nearly 150 pounds lighter than the Lancer Evolution. Its featherweight status notwithstanding, the RS has also been blessed with quicker reflexes: a front helical-type limited slip differential and a rear crossbar help to improve the handling of one of the world's best-handling automobiles. "Lancer Evolution RS reflects the essence of high-performance value," said Finbarr O'Neill, co-chairman and chief executive officer of Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA). "We've boiled the cost-per-thrill ratio down to its lowest conceivable point, providing tuners and racing enthusiasts with more of what they need, and less of what they don't." Less is More When the difference between winning and losing can be measured in tenths of a second, the difference between the 3,321-lb Lancer Evolution and the 3,175-lb Lancer Evolution RS becomes significant. To achieve a curb weight lower than the already-lean Lancer Evolution, the Lancer Evolution RS sheds several non-essential items. Most notable from outside, the RS is not bedecked with the Lancer Evolution's distinctive rear wing spoiler. The high-intensity discharge headlights also were deleted, as was the rear window wiper. Inside, RS drivers must make do without an air conditioning system or an AM/FM/CD audio system. There are no power mechanisms for the windows, locks, or side mirrors. Trunk compartment trim has been removed, as have vanity mirrors, rear assist grips, map lamps, and the parking brake lever's leather covering. An antilock brake system is not available. There are also fewer color choices; the Lancer Evolution RS is available in Rally Red or Weightless White. A Differential Difference The Lancer Evolution RS doesn't compromise performance, whether performance is defined as straight-ahead acceleration or exit speed out of an apex. Higher performance is achieved in part by lowering the vehicle's mass, but the RS is also better equipped to handle lateral motion, thanks to the addition of its front limited slip differential. This helical limited slip differential (LSD) takes the place of the Lancer Evolution's open front differential, giving the RS mechanical front and rear differentials that split power delivery between their respective left and right wheels, and a center differential that splits the power between front and rear. The front differential's helical design provides it with smooth operation and superior responsiveness. Small in both size and weight, the helical unit does not require special oil or additional maintenance. Helical-type limited-slip differentials offer several advantages over the clutch-type or viscous LSDs. Viscous limited-slip units tend to wear out after extended use, as their oil is heated and reheated until it degrades, rendering the unit ineffective. Clutch-type differentials provide good off-the-line traction, but the 50/50 stability that's beneficial in a straight line is not so desirable when a vehicle is turning. The helical-type limited slip provides better durability and performance when it's needed most: while turning. Unlike an open differential, which shifts power to the wheel with less grip, the helical LSD constantly shifts the bias toward the wheel that has more traction. Under straight-line acceleration, power remains evenly split between the front wheels. While cornering (e.g. accelerating out of a turn), the helical LSD directs power away from the inside wheel and toward the outside wheel, allowing the driver to begin accelerating earlier and exit the turn at a higher speed, without losing traction in the process. Performance is also improved on slippery mud or snow that's often encountered on isolated dirt roads, where the Lancer Evolution series spent much of its development. Curb Weight: 3175 lbs Layout: Front-Engine/AWD Transmission: 5-Speed Manual Engine Type: Turbocharged Inline-4 Displacement: 1997 cc Horsepower: 271 bhp @ 6500 rpm Torque: 273 lb-ft @ 3500 rpm Redline: 7000 rpm
  18. Source: Mitsubishi Cars Like a soothsayer peering into a crystal ball, Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA), today provided a glimpse into the future through the Eclipse Concept-E. But perhaps the future is more clearly visible through the glowing plasma bulb located in the car's center console. Because when the Eclipse Concept-E's parallel hybrid motor is switched on, that plasma indicator light glows with its own unique energy, letting the driver know that there's more here than meets the eye. Upon initial glance, what meets the eye is a highly styled coupe. Featuring plasma running lights and taillights; neon crackle-tube indicators and brake lights; and a glass roof that offers ambient luminescence of its own, the Concept-E could be called a study in light. But an innovative all-wheel-drive (AWD) configuration-in which parallel engines provide power to both the front and rear axles-also makes the Eclipse Concept-E a study in high-tech mechanics. Thanks to this unique hybrid system, called E-Boost, the Concept-E delivers a continuous, uninterrupted stream of power even while the six-speed automated manual transmission changes gears. The result is a car that boasts performance to match its aerodynamic appearance. "The Eclipse Concept-E suggests that performance and fuel efficiency need not be mutually exclusive," said Ulrich Walker, executive vice president of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation. "E-Boost is environmentally friendly technology, but it's also pure driving fun. The Concept-E is proof that hybrid technology can do as much for power and performance as it can for fuel consumption," Walker said. Suspension Performance Since its introduction to the North American market, the Eclipse compact sports coupe and convertible series has won wide acclaim for its styling and its segment-leading performance. The Concept-E carries that performance-bred spirit to electrifying new heights. The Eclipse Concept-E rides on 245/40R20 front and 275/35R20 rear performance tires, and nine-spoke, 20-inch wheels suspended by independent multi-links at all four corners. In fact, the rear suspension and differential were designed specifically for high performance; the rear suspension setup is the same one found underneath the motorsports-bred Lancer Evolution-series sedan. Engine The Eclipse Concept-E's front wheels are powered by a 3.8-liter V-6 engine that features Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing and lift Electronic Control (MIVEC). Driving the rear wheels is a rear-mounted E-Boost electric motor which provides an additional 200 horsepower, for a total output of 470 horsepower. Because it is not affected by gear changes, the throttle-actuated electric rear motor gives the Eclipse Concept-E a constant source of power when it's needed, which directly translates to higher, more efficient performance. Besides raw speed, the hybrid powertrain also improves fuel economy and lowers emissions when compared to vehicles with engines that develop in excess of 450 horsepower. And when value is added to the equation, the Concept-E is at least equal to its mass times the speed of light, squared. Interior While the two-plus-two seating configuration is carried into this preview of the fourth-generation Eclipse, that's where most similarities end. Inside, the Wave Line design theme includes an instrument panel that combines shadow and light, hard lines and soft curves, to create an elegant, relaxing an thoroughly modern environment. "The Concept-E makes use of traditional Japanese design - the incorporation of paradoxically complex elements in a simple manner," said Olivier Boulay, general manager of the Mitsubishi Motors Product Design Office. Light and shadow seem to merge inside the Concept-E, but the design cohesiveness goes further: Raindrop-shaped door panels, which resemble the shape of the exterior mirrors, give the interior a cohesive look and feel, and metallic-toned leather performance seats appear to conduct an electricity of their own. Rear seat passengers benefit from the side-hinged hatch. Moving the hinge away from the roof saved nearly two inches of rear headroom. Deep Video Imaging and Multi-Layer Display (MLD) technology provide the driver and passengers with simulated gauges, diagnostic information and interactive displays in an intuitive, multidimensional format. Exterior The Concept-E presents a distinctive front visage featuring the new Mitsubishi Motors corporate identity crafted around a prominent three-diamond logo. The front grille vent and integrated front spoiler evoke the image of a jet fighter. The long wheelbase, short overhangs and cab-forward layout create a highly integrated form which, combined with the raindrop design side window, gives the Concept-E an aggressive, ready-to-pounce profile. The Eclipse Concept-E's hybrid electric drivetrain had its own influence on design. As designer Mike Desmond explains: "Functional design elements include the side exhaust ports, which allow the electric motor's batteries to be placed down the center of the vehicle. "The front of the door is raked back at an almost impossible angle, to make the door cut lines accentuate the fenders. To do that, a special lower door hinge had to be designed. The hinge is hidden by a mechanically operated trap-door that folds open when the door opens. And that elliptical shape, in turn, is reflected in the shape of the side exhaust exits. Once again, we were able to integrate complex design elements in a simple manner."

Using the new mid-engine/rear-wheel drive platform, this is a concept car designed to fit the Japanese kei minicar dimensions. Targeted mainly at male owners over 35, SE - RO proposes a new kind of lifestyle that changes the value register for the minicar category. This is just the car for going out to parties with friends; that provides a hobby workspace inside the vehicle; for getting away from the city and enjoying outdoor pursuits. With softly styled front and rear ends, the exterior design features richly expressive styling that clearly sets SE - RO apart from conventional one-box minicar wagons. The hand-crafted aluminum body outer panels give the car an airplane of the future image. The packaging uses the new midship layout platform to locate the engine and other powertrain components between the two axles and provides a roomy interior space using sharply truncated overhangs and locating two rows of seats within the longish wheelbase. The rear seat backs and squabs can be folded up and back into the luggage compartment to create a generous workspace. Or, the rear seat squabs can be slid forward and the seat back folded down forward to form a flat surface that creates a very spacious luggage compartment. This kind of flexibility enables the rear compartment to be optimally arranged for occupant comfort, to create a workspace or to carry extra luggage. Story by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation
