  2. By LEE U-WEN (SINGAPORE) There are many safeguards in place should the opposition manage to displace the People's Action Party at a future general election, said Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew yesterday evening. He gave the assurance that Singapore's reserves would be protected, and that the country's top officials - such as those from the police and the army - could not be changed without first getting the President's consent. 'We've set in place a President with blocking powers, so any opposition that comes in will find that they cannot touch the reserves,' he said during a dialogue session at a gala dinner at the Shangri-La Hotel to mark the fifth anniversary of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. 'Otherwise, they promise the sky and spend the money and all our savings will go in five years,' he told his 800-strong audience that included key Cabinet ministers, senior civil servants, diplomats and academics. He noted how the President could count on his Council of Advisers, comprising experienced economists and businessmen, to advise him on what would be best for the country going forward. Mr Lee said that the system in Singapore allows any opposition the chance to displace the PAP government peacefully. 'If you can win an election, so be it. And at some time, some place, we will not be able to find a team that can equal an opposition team. And on that day, we deserve to be out. If we become corrupt, inefficient and can't deliver, we're out,' he said. 'We can't guarantee that each time we will produce a better team than the opposition. I don't see any problem at the next election, but maybe at the next one, and the opposition manages to get a good team. Then we're at risk.' What do you guys think?

  6. Lots of enthusiastic debate over at the other thread which I have decided to carry over to this thread to determine who in the mind of soccer fans is the most ideal manager to succeed Rafa Benitez at Liverpool FC assuming you are in the position to decide. I will just list down some of the managerial highs of each manager but not everything including their failures which would be too lengthy to write. We can discuss them in detail in subsequent postings. Pls take your pick and discuss! For others, please do not select this option if your choices are managers who had zero or near zero probability of joining liverpool this season, such as SAF, Wenger, Ancelotti, Hiddink, Mourinho. I have included Dalglish who is tasked with identifying the most suitable candidate but whom have been said to consider taking the job in the event that no suitable choices are available. Candidates Hodgson: Current reigning manager of the year in Barclays Premier League and who steered unfancied Fulham to a final appearance in UEFA cup final this year. Martin O Neil: Aston Villa manager who have achieved consistent results for a club with tight budget and whom have achieved a domestic treble with Celtic in his first season at the club and an appearance in UEFA cup final in 2003. Harry Redknapp: Took over when Spurs was in relegation zone and steered the club to champions league 4th spot in EPL within the first season. Louis Van Gaal: Won the champions league and domestic league double with Ajax in 1995 and steered Bayern Munich to a domestic double and a final appearance in champions league this year David Moyes: Secured champions league 4th spot in EPL for unfancied Everton in 2005 and consistently able to manage the team to a top 10 finish most of the time. Mark Hughes: Steered unfancied Blackburn to 6th position in 2006 and consistently able to maintain a 7-8th finish with them in subsequent seasons Sven Goran Erikkson: Won league titles with Benfica and Lazio. Coached England to qualification for 2002 world cup after taking over from Keegan when the team was in danger of missing out on qualification after certain poor results Kenny Dalglish: Coached Liverpool to 3 league titles and 2 FA cup victories in 1986-1990 and steered Blackburn from lower division to the premier league in 1992 and winning the league title with them in 1995
  7. In and interview with British mag Autocar, Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa hinted that the next Enzo will come with a twin-turbo, direct injection V8. Currently, Ferrari's flagship model is served by a 6.0 liter V12. Felisa was short on details but did say that the storied Italian supercar maker had ruled out rumors of producing a 6-cylinder power plant until there is a change in customer attitudes towards smaller engines. "The perception today is that the number of cylinders equates to the possibilities of the car. That is why we are developing hybrid technology that can be applied to our V8 and V10 cars," Felisa is quoted as saying in the Autocar story. The Ferrari chief also said that the automaker would not be expanding its use of carbon fiber materials across its model range - as is being done at competitors such as McLaren, BMW and Mercedes. Although, it will be used for the new Enzo since it is a low volume production car not used for everyday driving. "The fact is that nobody today has a real understanding of what happens if you damage a carbon fiber structure," said Felisa. The next Ferrari Enzo is due in 2012. Source: autocar.co.uk
  8. Currently, automakers use head-up displays to project important vehicle information (speed, navigation directions, etc.) on the windshield, keeping the driver's eyes focused on the road, where they belong. General Motors is hard at work developing its next-generation heads-up technology, and we were given a preview yesterday of what sort of new features to expect in the coming years. This new concept, developed in partnership with Carnegie Mellon and the University of Southern California, uses an augmented reality system to display head-up information across the entire windshield. Never heard of augmented reality? Sure you have. When you're watching a football game and images appear on the screen to indicate lines on the playing field, that's augmented reality. GM feels that this technology will be a good way to expand upon current heads-up systems without being too distracting for drivers. GM's new concept uses an array of vehicle sensors and cameras to collect data and project images directly onto the surface of the windshield. For example, if you're driving in dark foggy conditions, this technology can highlight the lines of the road. By pairing these functions with existing night vision technology, the heads-up system can identify and highlight animals or people along the side of the road. It's all about improving safety, not only for the driver and passengers, but for pedestrians, too. What's more, this new tech can work with a car's navigation system to give more precise directions, highlighting actual road signs or buildings to show drivers where they should be going. Don't expect to see this technology anytime soon, however
  9. Following the departure of Fiona Xie, Dawn Yeoh, and Jesseca Liu, Caldecott Hill's seven princesses are now whittled down to a mere four: Jeanette Aw, Felicia Chin, Joanne Peh, and Rui En. At last night's Star Awards 2010 Show 2 held in Resorts World Singapore, Felicia Chin hinted at the possibility of being next-to-go in her Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste award acceptance speech when she said, "This might be my last time standing on this stage." In an interview with xinmsn, the 26-year-old actress professed her nervousness and happiness in winning this award. She felt particularly touched with this win because "I have not been appearing on local TV screens in Singapore for a long time." "I was told that my name was on the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste listings for the past 9 weeks and I am really grateful for this," she honestly quipped. Decked out in a colourful ensemble from Indian designer, Manish Arora, Felicia played coy when asked about her mysterious hint onstage saying, "it is hard to predict what will happen in future." Currently filming an upcoming sports drama series, No Limits, with Elvin Ng and Dai Yangtian, she likened the award as "a very good present" and repeatedly expressed her thanks and joy. When asked if she plans to leave the entertainment industry and return to school -- as she previously mentioned in interviews, Felicia said nothing and merely confessed that her mother "hopes for me to finish my studies." "I personally hope to complete my father and mother's tiny dream. I personally feel that studying is a really great thing to do. It's like taking one step forward. It's not convenient for me to reveal my contract details, but there might be some minor changes this year. "Time will tell," the enigmatic one concluded.
  10. Hyundai has been very busy lately as it progresses through round two of its 24/7 product renewal program. Just days after unveiling the new Accent/Verna in Beijing, Hyundai has revealed its next generation Elantra/Avante at the Busan Motor Show in South Korea. Like the smaller Accent, the Elantra has picked up the "fluidic sculpture" styling cues of its big brother the Sonata. By virtue of its larger size, the Elantra retains more of the sleeker profile of the Sonata and doesn't look as stubby as the Accent. Like the Sonata, the new Elantra gets a direct injected inline-four, in this case a 1.6-liter based on the Gamma engine family. For the Elantra the GDI 1.6 generates 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. In combination with a new six-speed automatic transmission, the Elantra should get about 10 percent better fuel economy. The Avante will go on sale in South Korea in the second half of this year and we'd expect to see it state-side with Elantra badges early in 2011. No word yet on whether we will get a hybrid version of the new Elantra.
  11. It's the rumor that just refuses to die. We're not sure if that means there's a lot of truth behind it or it's just wishful thinking, but once again we're hearing that Mazda is hard at work on a new RX-7 sportscar. And while you might think such a vehicle would be as easy as adding a turbocharger to the existing Renesis-powered RX-8 and jettisoning the back seat (or pulling a Kabura with the MX-5's platform), Mazda apparently has much more grandiose intentions for its next range-topping sportscar. According to Motor Trend, Mazda's oft-talked-about 16X rotary engine is now capable of running on either gasoline or diesel with nary a difference in performance. We have to wonder about the accuracy of such claims, but if true, perhaps running on diesel or biofuels would give Mazda the eco-cred it's aiming for

  13. A Korean car forum member has captured undisguised images of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra. Featuring a "fluidic sculpture" design, the Elantra is virtually identical to the 2011 Sonata. Both cars have four-door coupe styling, sweptback headlights, a swoopy grille, and rearview mirrors with integrated LED turn signals. The only major difference is a shortened wheelbase. Inside, the Elantra features a classy dashboard with metal accents and black trim. Other highlights include a leather-trimmed steering wheel, two huge instrument pods, and angular door pulls. While details are limited, engine options will likely include a 1.6-liter four-cylinder and a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 198 hp (148 kW / 201 PS) and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm) of torque.
  14. Sat, Mar 27, 2010 Reuters LOS ANGELES - The Fox TV network on Friday stopped the clock on its action adventure series "24," ending one of its most successful dramas as ratings began to slip in its current, eighth season. The final, two-hour program will air on May 24, and in the countdown to that last show, the network will air 11 hours of uninterrupted episodes on Monday nights. "This has been the role of a lifetime, and I will never be able to fully express my appreciation to everyone who made it possible," the show's star, Kiefer Sutherland, said in a statement. "Looking ahead to the future, (executive producer) Howard Gordon and I are excited about the opportunity to create the feature film version of '24'," Sutherland added. Since the show began in 2001, Sutherland has portrayed tough-minded federal agent Jack Bauer, who has fended off assassins and terrorists and saved mankind from devastation. The fast-paced program often employed a split screen to show events happening in two places at one time, and a clock ticked off the time remaining for Bauer to complete his mission. Each one-hour episode represented one hour in Bauer's life, and every season had 24 episodes to simulate a full day. In its heyday, "24" was one of TV's most popular dramas. It earned a total 68 Emmy Awards, TV's highest honor, including best drama series in 2006. Sutherland was nominated for best actor in a drama seven times, winning once. But viewership had begun to decline. The most recent episode drew just under 9 million viewers in the United States, down from last season's average of slightly more than 13 million. Sutherland and the show's creators now hope to take the character to movie theaters in a film version.

  16. AFP SAO PAULO - DOUBLE World Cup winner Ronaldo said on Monday he would retire from professional football at the end of next year but still had hopes of appearing for Brazil in the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa in June. The 33-year-old three-times world footballer of the year - widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time - told a media conference in Sao Paolo he was finally calling time on his illustrious but injury-hit career. Currently playing for Corinthians in Sao Paolo, the player known as 'El Fenomeno' during his prime said he had agreed with the club to play until the end of 2011. 'I've renewed for another two years and they will be the last of my career. I want to give my all. I hope to have fun and end with some big wins,' he said, according to the G1 news website. That could include a final appearance for Brazil in the June 11-July 11 World Cup in South Africa, said Ronaldo, who scored 62 goals in 97 appearances for Brazil. 'We'll see. I still have a chance to go (to South Africa). For the next one (in Brazil in 2014), it's impossible. It's so far away and time is passing - including for me,' he said. The former Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Inter striker helped Brazil to victory in the 1994 and 2002 World Cup, shrugging off injury to end the latter tournament as top World Cup scorer of all time with 15 goals. He last played for his country in the 1-0 defeat to France in the quarter-final of the 2006 World Cup in Germany. He scored his last goal for Brazil four days earlier in the 3-0 win over Ghana.

  18. I'm posting this, as a mature teenager, who would like to ask for honest opinions from bros out here in MCF. My current re001's on the car are already balding at the sides and i've gotten the green light from parents to have a new set of tyres changed before CNY. My previous thread about the Bridgestone RE-11's have invited numerous postings about me being overkill and treating the sylphy as a performance car and whatsoever. I just wish to clarify that I drive safely, and I wish to take my safety in my own hands. Thus it brings me to the one question. What tyres can I change to ? 205/50/16 in size... Preferably along the re001 line, since my family drivers are all used to the re001 feel and handling. Thank you for your honest opinion.

  24. This is an article from paultan.org. Find it quite insightful as it involves Honda's future. Honda rethinks its future product offerings Future automobile products are planned a few years in advance and with the volatile world markets these days the job of a product engineering team as well as a product planner is getting harder and harder. Autonews.com has a very interesting story they managed to squeeze out of Honda's management at the 2009 Tokyo show centering around one of Honda's most vital platforms – the Civic platform. The Civic platform forms the basis of other vehicles like the Stream, the CR-V, and even other Hondas not found in our market such as the Honda Element. The interview revealed that Honda's original intentions was for the next generation Honda Civic to be even larger and more plush than the current Civic, which has already grown to last decade Accord-ish proportions in terms of length and wheelbase. But that plan has been scrapped. Honda engineers have instead been told to make the Civic smaller and lighter. It's not 100% clear what this means – the Civic may not necessarily become smaller than the current generation. It could probably mean smaller and lighter than originally intended to be, which would hopefully put it around the same size as the current generation. Honda wants to try creating an increased perception of interior space but keep the exterior dimensions within control. Another rumour that surfaced a few months ago was that Honda could be splitting the Civic into two lines like Toyota's Corolla and Corolla Altis, a smaller one for Japanese tax regulations and a larger one for markets that like more metal for their money. But such a mid-way change has caused the project to be somewhat delayed. The current Civic has just been facelifted and a new one is supposed to arrive in 2011, a 5 year cycle after its introduction in 2006. But Honda is putting in more manpower to try to meet the target. If that doesn't happen, the Civic could be delayed for a year or so. Honda president Takanobu Ito admitted the team was struggling. This is not unprecedented, the previous generation Corolla Altis was also delayed and we still ended up with an all-new Altis that was pretty much a reskinned previous gen. Other new upcoming Honda products include the implementation of the hybrid IMA system across more models. Right now it is only available in small to medium cars – the Insight, the Civic Hybrid, and pretty soon the CR-Z. A hybrid minivan is coming – this could mean a few things such as an USDM Odyssey Hybrid or even a Stream Hybrid. Not much else was revealed about which minivan model. There used to be an Accord Hybrid but that was scrapped due to discouraging sales. But larger hybrid vehicles like the Accord Hyrbid is going to make a comeback soon. Honda revealed that a dual-motor IMA system is currently under development. The dual motor system will be configured in a way that it is able to function as an e-CVT in full electric mode, much like the series-parallel system in the Toyota Prius. This means Honda will have a two-prong hybrid strategy – a motor assist parallel mode hybrid system for smaller cars and a full hybrid series-parallel system that can be used in larger cars. A series-parallel hybrid is of course more costly and complicated to implement thus more suitable for larger vehicles that are able to carry higher price tags.
