  6. Drink driving becomes "unfit to drive !!!" ++++++++++++++++++++++++ Mar 15, 2011 Aussie spared jail due to judge's lapse Originally charged with drink-driving, he was convicted on amended charge without proof By Khushwant Singh AN AUSTRALIAN had his three-week jail term for being unfit to drive set aside, after the High Court found it 'troubling' that he was convicted on an amended charge without being given the opportunity to defend himself. Justice Steven Chong said the non-compliance with the Criminal Procedure Code was particularly serious in this case, as the prosecution had not produced evidence to support the amended charge. On June 23, 2008, John Peter Worrall, 60, the vice-president of oil company Swiber Offshore Construction, was driving home to his Bayshore condominium in East Coast at 11pm, after meeting colleagues at Harry's Bar in Far East Shopping Centre. His car went up a kerb and hit a tree along Bayshore Road. He was later arrested for drink-driving. After an eight-day trial that ended in August last year, he was convicted not of drink-driving, but of being unfit to drive. He was also convicted of not exercising due care and attention while driving, causing the accident - a charge he faced originally in addition to the drink-driving one. He was sentenced to three weeks' jail and fined $6,000, and was disqualified from driving for four years on the first conviction, and fined $800 and given a four-month driving ban on the second.

  8. I recently bought an XC90 which to my knowledge, is a 7 seater. 3 in 2nd row (behind driver and front passenger) and 2 in 3rd row. But I noticed the LTA Notice of Transfer of ownership as well as the insurance policy states the XC90 as a 6 seater. Does this mean I am not covered by insurance when I hav 7 ppl in the car? Abit like how most taxis will not carry 4 passengers in the back seat (always claim insurance don't cover 5 passengers). Anyone who knows please help!

  12. Remember those rumors that Volkswagen was poised to purchase Italdesign Giugiaro? Well, they're rumors no more, as the two storied firms have just announced that it's a done deal. The German automaker will acquire a 90-percent stake in the design house, and the Giugiaro family, which currently owns the company outright, will retain the remaining 10 percent. It is currently assumed that Volkswagen will keep the 975 employees at Italdesign, adding them to its own design department. Reports indicate that VW will also retain the services of the elder Giorgetto Giugiaro and his son, Fabrizio, who currently serves as the company design head. For what it's worth, the Italian design house styled some of VW's most successful and iconic models, including the original Golf (or Rabbit, depending on your country of birth) and Scirocco. 14. The crew at Fast Lane Daily have apparently scored the first official shot of the Ferrari 599 GTO ahead of its launch later this year, and while we're still suitably skeptical about the pic, we've been assured by the show's producers that this is the real deal. So what's Ferrari have in store? If previous reports are to be believed, the GTO will be a road-focused version of the 599XX, packing a 700+ horsepower Enzo-derived 6.0-liter V12 capable of revving to 9,000 rpm. Shifts will be delivered in a mind-boggling 60 milliseconds, resulting in a 0-60 time of 3.2 seconds as it climbs to a claimed 217 mph top speed. Only 500 units will be produced

  16. Over the weekend, we got our first look at official images of the new Audi RS5 when a brochure leaked out onto the interwebs, but it didn't contain any technical details of the latest product from Quattro GmbH. Thankfully, our friends in Ingolstadt have seen fit to drop that information on us this morning, and as we suspected, they have opted to go with an upgraded version of the engine that served so well in the late RS4. The 4.2-liter V8 remains naturally aspirated, but its breathing has been improved to bring the maximum output up to 450 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. The power peak comes up at 8,250 rpm, just shy of the 8,300 rpm redline, and maximum torque is delivered throughout the range between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm. The RS5 comes out the factory with the ability to accelerate to 62 miles per hour in 4.6 seconds on the way to a governed top speed of 155 mph. Owners that wish to exceed that speed can have the governor unlocked, enabling a terminal velocity of 174 mph. As usual with higher performance Audi models, Quattro all-wheel-drive is the order of the day for power distribution. However, unlike other recent applications that have used a Torsen center differential, the RS5 features the first use of a new crown gear differential with electronically controlled clutch pack. The torque split can be varied from the nominal 40:60 front-to-rear to as much as 70 percent front or 85 percent rear. An optional active torque vectoring rear differential is also available to further improve the RS5's handling. The only available gearbox in the RS5 is a new seven-speed S-Tronic dual clutch transmission (DCT). Hopefully now that Audi has a high-output DCT, we'll also see it replace the dreadful R-Tronic unit in the R8 soon. The RS5 will get its public debut in Geneva next week and goes on sale in Europe this spring for a base price of

  19. Michael Schumacher on Wednesday announced he is looking forward to the challenge of replacing his injured former Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa at forthcoming grands prix. "I met this afternoon with Stefano Domenicali and Luca di Montezemolo and together we decided that I will prepare myself to take the place of Felipe," the 40-year-old German, who retired in 2006, said. Schumacher hung up his helmet as a record-holding seven time world champion and winner of 91 grands prix and insists he has never regretted his decision. "Though it is true that the formula one chapter was completely closed for me a long time ago, it is also true that for loyalty reasons to the team I cannot ignore (this) unfortunate situation," he added. "But as the competitor I am I also very much look forward to facing this challenge," said Schumacher. Ferrari also confirmed the news, following reports in the respectively German and Swiss newspapers Bild and Blick. The Italian team said it will enter Schumacher as the alternative competitor of Massa's car number 3 following a training programme for the German, who earlier this year hurt his neck in a motorcycle testing crash. "I really can't tell you if his neck would be fine to drive an F1 race ... and remember he is a 40-year-old man, too," Schumacher's spokeswoman Sabine Kehm said on Tuesday. Ferrari Statement Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro intends to put Michael Schumacher in Felipe Massa's car untill the brazilian driver will be able to race again. Michael Schumacher said he is ready and, over the next few days, will undertake a specifc training programme at the end of which confermation will be given of his participation in the Championship with effect from the European Grand Prix on the 23rd of August

  22. ASIAONE S'pore is in recession Fri, Oct 10, 2008 AFP SINGAPORE - Singapore's trade-sensitive economy has declined for a second straight quarter, the government said Friday, meaning the city-state has entered a recession for the first time in six years. On a seasonally adjusted quarter-on-quarter annualised basis, real GDP declined by 6.3 percent in the third quarter after contracting 5.7 percent in the previous quarter, estimates from the Ministry of Trade and Industry said. It did not describe the economy as being in recession, but a technical recession is generally defined as two consecutive quarters of quarter-on-quarter contractions in economic output.
