    TOP PSLE pupil...

...is an ah tiong... I feel they come from a long way and they are more motivated to do better THIS year's top student in the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) could barely speak any English when she moved here from China in 2006 with her family. Qiu Biqing, 13, from Qifa Primary School, achieved an aggregate score of 290, with four A*s and a Distinction in Higher Chinese. Her father, Mr Qiu Guo Hua, 45, is a research fellow at the National University of Singapore, and her mother, Madam Xie Xiaojin, 42, is a research assistant there. They both work in a physiology lab. The top Indian pupil this year is Muhammad Saad Siddiqui from Anglo-Chinese School (Primary), and the top Malay pupil is Syafiqah Nabilah Bte Shamshera from Raffles Girls' Primary School. Biqing said that she improved her English by reading a lot, and not being afraid to speak aloud even if she made mistakes. She has a place in Raffles Girls' School through the Direct Schools Admission process and hopes to become a lawyer or a novelist.

  4. I was asked this question some time back and i cant find the answer in the threads here nor at MOE website. PSLE exam is 4 subjects right? So each subject should be max 100 marks. If thats the case why must the PSLE aggregate score be upon 300 and not 400? Or even if each paper is not max 100 marks, why not just add up all the scores and we have the total score. What is the reason behind the need to have the aggregate score? Hope bros here can enlighten me. I dono if i sound a bit stupid in asking, please dont flame me. And thanks bros for all the help.
  5. I received an email from a freaked dad, some mass mail kinda thing, what do you think of this Dad?: For those who might have kids who were 12 years old, it was definitely an exciting day for many yesterday, especially the Mom and Dads out there. Why was it so? It was the release of results for PSLE (Primary School Leaving Examination). I was there with my son Brandon to collect his PSLE results. Guess what, he had an amazing result. He managed 178 points. For a moment, I nearly freaked out. He did not manage to get into the Express Stream as the cut off point was 188. As for me, I was kind of stunned initially as I had managed 4As and an aggregate of 241 when I took my PSLE 22 years back. As Brandon stared at the result slip, tears started dropping from the side of his eyes. He was devastated but deep inside his heart, he knew that he had not made the necessary effort. Of course I felt a little bad as well as I had been really busy with my business and had neglected him. If your kid had scored 178, I think you wouldn't be sleeping well at night. You must be probably preparing the cane and planning a whipping session. You would probably be hurling abuses at your kid or telling him or her how disappointed you were...not me. Guess what I told him? I said, "Brandon, welcome to the real world. You hadn't suffered any setback in life yet. This is the harsh reality of life. What you sow is what you reap and you should stare hard at the reactions of the other pupils. Many of them are enjoying the success of their efforts while you were distracted by the games and tv. It is better for you to suffer the setback now than later." This is not the end, I told him. I then asked him, "Are you a loser?". He said No and I told Brandon, "You are a loser now! You have a choice, you can choose to be only a loser now or you can be a loser for life. I was a loser once but I changed myself and got back onto track." In life there will be a lot of setbacks. When you encounter them, just look at the bright side. Overcome your setbacks and you will end up into higher ground. Get swallowed by it and you will be a goner.

  7. Today New Paper Headline read: "CPIB probes PSLE cheating case" - Teacher suspected of changing pupils' exam answers. A school teacher caught cheating by altering some answers in the Mother Tongue (Tamil Language) in the northern part of Singappre in October (2007). The thing came to light when the chief examiner found out that the composition and grammar papers had been altered by crossing the wrong words and written over it. The chief invigilator found that the hand writting and the ink is different, he made a report of the finding to MOE and Singapore Examinations And Assessment Board (Seab). The case had been referred to CPIB and currently the teacher is under investigation. Wahhhh......... no wonder some pupils can score so many A's easily. During my time, don't have lay..........sigh. . If not, plenty of A's......
  8. Clerk jailed for helping man deposit $1.2 m into her accounts Elena Chong Mon, Nov 12, 2007 The Straits Times A WOMAN was jailed for three months on Monday for helping a man deposit $1.2 million worth of cheques into her bank accounts. Sim Hwei Kian, 30, then withdrew $1.18 million and handed it over to 'Kevin' who had offered her $500 for each bank account opened and a further 0.5 per cent commission for each transaction. After one year, 'Kevin'' also promised to give her $10,000 when the accounts were to be closed. The Singapore Turf Club clerk, who was in financial trouble, agreed. She had earlier posted messages on the Internet seeking financial loans. Among the many replies she got was one from 'Kevin'. 'Kevin' had also informed her that the bank accounts were to receive 4D and soccer bet collections, but in fact, the money had been misappropriated. The four cheques had been cut from the cheque books of ConocoPhillips Asia Ventures and ConocoPhillips International and the signatures had been forged. Sim pleaded guilty to a charge under the Corruption, Drug Trafficking and Other Serious Crimes (Confiscation of Benefits) Act which carries a fine of up to $200,000 or a jail term of up to seven years, or both. On Sept 24, she deposited four cheques slotted under her door into her bank accounts. The total was $1.23 million. Over the next two days, she withdrew the money totalling $1.18 million over seven occasions. She bundled them into bags and placed them at a staircase landing for 'Kevin' to collect. On Sept 25, she withdrew $5,000 for her own use. This amount has been recovered. Her lawyer, Mr Satwant Singh, said Sim was not the mastermind nor did she benefit from the crime. Sim, who had failed her Primary School Leaving Examination twice, had never seen 'Kevin' at all. All she knew was that she was helping him with his illegal football bets.
