  1. ...and I mean the car, not the game (can't afford to take that up), after-meal mint or the fragrance (which I quite like). Anyway, pointless banter aside, on a semi-spur-of-the-moment whim, I decided to check out the newly launched Polo and here are my thoughts, which, I should state, are clearly my personal opinion and wide open for debate. First impressions are very good indeed - baby-Passat-esque front, built-in indicators in the wing mirrors (why did they take so long to realise this was a much better idea than the measly blinking light on the side ? ) and the consistency of the panel gaps widths, ah yes.... Open the door (any door) and you get the typically (for any VAG-owner, anyway) reassuring weighted swing and solid thud. Inside, the standard cloth seats feel very much like the Fabia's I've ridden in recent times - firm and fairly upright. Materials and fit in the cabin are pretty much spot on, too. Powered windows all round and, what's this ? And ESP switch on the dash? Hmmmm...... The boot (opened with a conventional handle rather than the trendy flip up logo a la Mk5 Golf and the Mk4 Leon) would fit a weekend's worth of groceries or pram (not both at the same time) but fitting them in may at times be a bit of a squeeze as the sides arch inwards, intruding the overall load area. Don't expect any golf bags in here tho'. Driving - even on the stock 14"ers the ride was surprisingly well damped and not as bouncy as expected. Squat and roll was pretty well under control, too. Overall noise intrusion from the tyres was a tad high for my liking but that may have been due also to the choice tyres. Brakes felt less spongy than recent new VAG's of similar size which I've tried, which is good, I suppose. Perhaps they're using different pads these days? The only (and probably, my main) gripe was the gearbox - smooth on both up- and downshifts, it feels somewhat reluctant to change. While I can't quite nail it down I suspect it's the shifting pattern program which causes it to take what seems to be forever to respond, making the 75hp 1.4 feel a lot less eager to go that its (less-powerful) distant Czech cousin in manual guise. And given the shared genetics, (plus the fact I've driven several of them in recent times) I can't help but compare the two, and this is where I feel the Polo lacks - a manual option. With its available gearbox blasting out of corners is a non-event (as in these events won't happen) and I shudder to think of an overtaking manuever. That said, I suppose not everyone drives like me (although I know some who are in turn significantly more demanding - yes, you know who you are.... ) and as a city-runabout braving the perils of traffic lights, the gearbox should settle in to its role pretty well. And it's that, along with what's probably the best interior build in its class bar none, is what you're paying for. If that's what you're looking for in a super(ish)mini with near-impeccable build I honestly can't think you' could go wrong with this. Alas, without the option of a manual (or, by a longer stretch, the smokin' 100hp 16-valver), the half-repeat performance to the Mk1 Gti I was hoping for this isn't.
  2. Qooo

    Polo or Punto?

Polo is going for 65K while Punto is at 60K after discount. Polo: From starting line : draggy. Gearbox : 4 speed auto Windows: all auto Bottom line : lesser electronics Others : cool new age wipers. :) Salesguy : a little bo chap. Punto: From starting line : preppy. Gearbox : 6 speed cvt dualtronic. (auto + manual) Windows : front auto, hind manual. Bottom line : more electronics like trip computer etc. Salesguy : very enthusiastic chap. Other than the above comparison, any other ways to compare these two cars?
  3. Just heard that VW is selling the Polo now at about S$65K?? That's the same price as the 'new' 16v Fabia units from CA... I think in other countries, Fabia is supposed to be about 15% cheaper than the Polo Hmmm... could this be the reason why CA is discontinuing the Fabia line in Singapore?
