  11. Oil giant Shell will stop displaying pump prices at petrol station entrances, ending its seven-year solo campaign to raise price transparency in the industry. It has started removing price boards across its network of about 60 stations. This means motorists will find out about fuel-price changes only when they drive up to a pump island, or if they trawl the various oil companies' websites. The oil majors used to make it a practice to inform the public of price changes via the media. Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNew...ory_815531.html

  14. Sometime i wonder how such astronomical value of Singapore's COE can even be considered an indicator of the economic growth of singapore, Here is a recent article on the explanation of current increase in COE. COE increase Recently COE prices Hits 80k, when in many countries this sum of money would be able to get you many cars. Even with economic growth, I myself as the younger generation find it hard, or even impossible to own a car locally.
  15. Starhub Euro Price plan Knn bloody sucker.
  16. Now that condoms have to be authenticated by the HSA, the price has shot up. So family-planning couplings are doing away with condoms to cut cost, thus resulting in higher pregnancy rate. What a clever move to get more babies in Singapore. Now, they also make money from the sex trade in Geylang, because only condoms authenticated by the HSA at exorbitant cost can be used. See report below: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Woman arrested with 100 packets of condoms A 30 year old woman was arrested for trying to bring in 100 packs of condoms from JB. She pleaded guilty to importing a medical device not registered with the HSA, and was fined $2000 and jailed for 2 weeks. (recent some editor killing someone while using handphone - fine and 1 day jail) Since condoms have been reclassified as a medical device class C (together with knee and hip implants and other orthopaedic implants used by the orthopaedic surgeon), there is a big shortage of condoms, and the prices have shot through the roof. You must first register a medical device before you can import it, and you need a licence to import a medical device. The ministers are rubbing their hands in glee, because there is an explosion of pregnancies. Why, we should have thought about this long ago, and our population woes would have been no more. To apply for registration of any brand of condoms takes at least 11 months, and it costs $6200, according to the Sunday Times. So for the next 12 months no condoms. Since Ccondoms are now classified as a medical device, sexual intercourse is reclassified as a medical procedure, and soon we have to take a professional exam to prove our proficiency to perform sexual intercourse. The exam will consist of a written test, followed by an (ahem) oral test, and then we must pass the practical test under the watchful eyes of 3 examiners. A certificate of proficiency will then be issued if you pass all these tests, else we have to sit for a re-exam. This must be prominenty displayed in the room, sitting room, car, public park, hotel room, or whatever, when we are having intercourse, because if we are caught by the HSA officials doing this delicate medical procedure without the certificate of proficiency , we can be charged in court and punished severely. After all, we cannot trust any Tom, Dick and Hairy Dick o do a total knee replacement using a Class C medical device without being fully qualified as an orthopaedic surgeon to do knee replacement, can we? No argument about this, is there? We must be properly qualified as a ........ The prostitutes in town are crying foul, and the ministers again patted themselves in the back: There, we have gotten rid of this vice by classifying condoms as a Class C medical device! Why did we not think of this before? Fast forward 6 months. The gynaecologists and town are making tons of money. Teenage pregnancies, any age pregnancies, any pregnancy unwanted -- there is a bonanza of abortions being done. Fast forward 1 year. No increase in take home babies. Big increase of HIV infections, syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia -- you name it. Why, why did they not think of it before? Million dollar brains.

  20. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/02/24/...E8DO1BQ20120224 Fri Feb 24, 2012 1:05am EST * Tensions between Iran and West boost oil * Upbeat U.S. economy data lifts demand outlook * Brent hits fresh record in euros on Thursday (Adds details, update prices) By Florence Tan SINGAPORE, Feb 24 (Reuters) - Brent crude rose above $124 on Friday, on track for a fifth straight weekly gain, as worries over Iranian supply and upbeat U.S. economic data offset concerns that high oil prices could snuff out demand growth. Brent crude rose 38 cents to $124.00 by 0550 GMT, after touching a high of $124.28 earlier in the session. Brent, which has gained more than 11 percent so far this month, settled on Thursday at $123.62 a barrel -- the highest front-month settlement since May 2 last year. U.S. crude futures rose for a seventh day, its longest winning streak since a 10-day gain in December 2009. The April contract was up 73 cents at $108.56 a barrel. "There's still a risk premium to be built in oil prices because of Iran," said Jonathan Barratt, chief executive of BarrattBulletin, a Sydney-based commodity research firm. Tensions between the West and Iran over Tehran's nuclear programme rose after a U.N. nuclear watchdog mission ended in failure this week. Faced with western sanctions, European and Asian buyers of Iranian crude have or planned to cut imports from Tehran. Japan, the world's third-largest oil importer, may cut Iranian crude imports by a more-than-expected 20 percent as it seeks a waiver from U.S. sanctions, a move which would spare its banks from a major blow but also boost its rising fuel import bill. Yet, the stalemate over Iran's nuclear programme is working in favour of the Islamic Republic as higher oil prices are compensating Iran for its market share losses, Barratt said. Iran said it has maintained oil production levels despite sanctions, but oil experts said they suspected Tehran was storing crude at sea while looking for new customers to evade Western measures. DEMAND CONCERNS Consumption for refined oil products in the United States -- the world's top oil consumer -- plunged to the lowest level in nearly 15 years, data from the Energy Information Administration showed. President Barack Obama hit back at election-year Republican criticism of his energy policies, offering a staunch defense of his attempts to wean Americans off foreign oil and saying there is no "silver bullet" for high gasoline prices. Rising oil prices have also been adding to concerns over demand. Brent valued in euros surged to a record on Thursday, adding fuel costs to the euro zone's debt troubles and denting the region's recovery efforts. Brent's record price in euros is "going to hurt any chance of recovery" at the euro zone, Barratt said. The euro zone has yet to break its vicious cycle of debt as its economy is heading into its second recession in just three years and the wider European Union will stagnate, according to a forecast by the European Commission. Brent's premium to U.S. crude CL-LCO1=R narrowed to $15.44 after closing at $15.79 on Thursday as inventories at Cushing, the delivery point for WTI, fell 315,000 barrels last week. The spread rose to over $20 a barrel earlier in the month on rising inventories in the U.S. Midwest. In other markets, Asian shares rose and the euro hovered at 2-1/2-month highs on Friday after data underscored a recovery in the battered U.S. labour market and German business sentiment improved. The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits last week held at the lowest level since the early days of the 2007-2009 recession, while U.S. December home prices rose 0.7 percent. EC Price?

Am going to a property launch of EC tomorrow - must we "accept" the price as offered, or can we negotiate? NOTE: Naturally the developer's willingness to drop price depends on their confidence in selling - this is NOT what I am asking - I am asking if the price is fixed, or if we can counter offer?
  23. In a tragic accident early yesterday afternoon a father was torn from his family. Transferring from his normal workplace in Jurong, to a site in Loyang, he met with an accident. He was pinned under a car. Internal bleeding ending up taking his life a little after midnight. He leaves behind a wife, 4 year old daughter and 8 month old twins. Living in a 3 room rental flat this was a Singapore father who was a real believer in the Singapore virtues of hardwork and education, family and doing better for your children. Working two jobs in a 17 hour day I have no doubt but that he must have suffered from extreme exhaustion - yet he still was able to continue to make the best for his family. The real tragedy is now the uncertain future the family faces - for the mother of the children, his devastated wife is Vietnamese. She is here in Singapore on a social visit pass. The rental flat is in his name. What happens next? Will a mother be able to care for her children? Will the family have a place to live? Where is the money to come from? How will the kindergarten education continue? Questions I cannot answer. I only hope that these children are given even 1/4 of the opportunities that most of us have. Even a fraction of the chances that we have to be with our mothers, to learn and to achieve.
  24. Is it possible and desireable for (example) 10 people buying the same model of car but all 10 paying different prices. It is definitely possible if we have a pay-as-you-bid COE system, whether we bid ourselves or through the car dealer. Imagine yourself paying $70K and someone else paying only $70 for the same cat COE. Any comments here?
