  2. From today's ST. Interesting excerpts. In an internal memo, Citi urged staff to be more frugal. All new Blackberrys purchase need to be pre-approved! Should not this be basic? Ban on off-side meeting to cut down cost of refreshment s bought outside. UBS is now flying economy on domestic while Deutsche Bank told employees no reimbursement for "adult entertainment of any kind"! WOW Goldman Sachs trader no longer get free water and soft drinks.
  3. Car engines The old motor roars back Aug 14th 2008 From The Economist print edition The internal combustion engine is more than 100 years old, but it still has a future. SMALL cars sometimes struggle to climb steep hills. But a converted Chevrolet Lacetti has something special to help it along. Instead of having to keep changing down and revving harder to ascend a winding Alpine-type test track, the engine can cruise almost to the summit in top gear. This is because the car benefits from one of the developments that in these more economical and greener times promises to give the petrol engine a new lease of life. Old technologies have a habit of fighting back when new ones come along. This is not surprising because they often have an enormous amount of design, engineering and production knowledge invested in them

  6. For those people who harbor some unexplainable confidence in the myriad of "snake oil" products in hopes of achieving better fuel economy, a quick read of these articles may actually educate you enough of what many informed people here already know: such "miracle" devices don't work despite all the so called technical figures as proof to convince you. http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive...age=1&series=19 http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive...to/4264939.html Of course, it's your money at the end of the day to experiment and perhaps attain a "feel good" sensation from adding something to your beloved car. Have a good weekend everyone.
  7. The story begins like this. Current Potong pasir - 1st owner - my mym, 2nd owner - me Got married, bought a new unit at Seng kang - 1st owner - me, 2nd owner - my wife 1 person can only possess 1 unit, so my PP ownership has to transfer out which in this case is my sister. Applied HDB HLE loan. Approved, and the new amount was calculated by one of the officer with all my proof documents. Balance of PP is $61k, and monthly has been calculated for my sister/mum to continue. Now, to finalize the transfer of ownership, HDB branch is asking for below documents. Current Owner/transferee 1. $50 admin charge 2. Deletion of Authorised Occupiers form (if any) Proposed Owner/transferee 1. Recent Passport Size photographs 2. Latest Gross Income Statements of Proposed Lessee and Occupier (given during my HLE application form) 3. NRIC of Proposed Lessee and Occupier (given during my HLE application form) 4. Document of proof of relationship (eg: birth cert) 5. Valuation Fee by Cash/CPF (inclusive GST) 6. $20 admin charge (request for valuation) 7. HDB Loan Eligibility Letter (HLE) Additional items 1. Original Death Cert I find it valuation is unnecessary, but the officer explained to me according to policy, it is required. If PP can fetched $400k, as when i bought at $273, meaning, i have to paid $127k for current property price, the loan will be $273+$61k = $334k loan. Find it ridiculous, the property price belongs to us already, there is no such things when i transfer to family, and my family has to pay more to HDB. Can someone tell me how to go about to speak to Minister?

  10. Hi to all people, This is a interesting blog by an ex-singapore citizen.... Happy reading! http://singaporedissident.blogspot.com/
  11. True story of my cousin L My cousin L has always been a car fanatic. Born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he was never wanting, and when he turned 23, he requested his father to buy him a top-range Mazda RX-8 (6 speed, 250ps or so) as his birthday present. His father obliged him. In their family garage a month later, the RX-8 was parked proudly next to the family BMW 530i and his sister's VW Beetle. L, then a university undergraduate, started to show off his ride to his classmates, and started to patronise performance car workshops with his ride to "soup it up" to go faster. He also started to dress it up in outlandish bodykits that made it look like it was ready to take off anytime from his driveway. The modifications and bodykits were paid for using his supplementary credit card which his father has given to him. Being a busy businessman, my uncle paid scarce attention to the activities and spendings of his son, brushing it off as a "growing up phase". The last I know, L has spent a total of about $60,000 on his ride, and in place of the once stock standard RX-8 now squats a menacing beast that boasts about 350-380bhp and looks like it would be requiring a license from CAAS to operate. We often had a good laugh over the looks of his car, with me deriding him on his choice of "garishly loud" style and him jokingly threatening to race and disgrace my ride if I continue to mock him. In essence, L was just indulging in his passion to the fullest he knew how. I think considerations of the law and his own safety never occured to him. I think thats what killed L in the end. I know that 3-4 months before he got killed, L had started to indulge in street racing, sometimes impromptu, sometimes with a group of like-minded friends. From the stories he shared with me, he must be enjoying himself very much. I had always told him to accompany me on one of my organised track sessions, so that we could have fun together in a controlled and safer environment, but L would always laugh me off and told me that "the real battles are on the streets, K". It was on a night in Nov 2007 that I received a call, a call that I had always dreaded to receive but somehow knew I would. It was my uncle, L's father. He called to tell me something has happened to L and whether I would mind meeting him at The Scene. Driving with a heavy heart to the place he had mentioned, Images of a laughing and carefree L fleeted across my mind like fragile butterflies. Words that we exchanged, tips that we shared on car modifications, thigh slapping humor that we shared, all seem to revolve in a mad mental cacophony in my head. Suffice to say that L was killed in a very bad accident, and the police at the scene had suspected that the accident occured during an illegal street race or high speed driving. The RX-8 was smashed to bits against a dividing fence railing. L, or what remained of him, was covered using two separate white cloths. His girlfriend, who was riding as a passenger with L, was injured badly and just as we arrived, was being loaded onto a parked ambulance. Needless to say, my uncle was inconsolable. I never had the courage to view L's remains, or to identify him at the mortuary later on. The funeral was a short and discreet affair, and L's remains were placed in a locked coffin and cremated without ceremony. Another young one has been killed on the road as a result of high speed driving. My uncle has since sold his business and retired. His regret was letting his son go too far in his passion without any form of restraints. I believe that there are many car enthusiasts like L in Singapore, with money and boldness to spare. Owning a ride of our dreams and doing it up to suit our tastes is a good and personal thing. There is no right or wrong in it. It is only when one goes beyond the established boundaries of safety that the grim reaper starts lurking near us. It a a cliche to tell anyone not to indulge in impromptu "street fun" at all, but all I wish to say is "know your own limits, and the limits of your car". Any life lost on the roads is never for a worthy cause.
  12. On Tuesday morning, I was happily driving down CTE towards city for work when I passed by the AMK Ave 1 ERP gantry. Then a long 'beeeep...' caught my attention and realised there wasnt any deduction on my cashcard. Damn! I pull out the cashcard form my IU and re-insert it into the IU. It reads the cashcard and I continued my journey. At Braddell gantry, again a long 'Beeep....'What???? Again the ERP didnt deduct from my IU. I call LTA hotline when i reach office told an operator on the matter. Later the afternoon, a technical officer called me and said the gantry detected no cashcard in my IU. What the @#$%&?. I insisted that my cashcard was in and the IU had indicated the cashcard was inserted and ok. She said LTA will send me a letter and I can appeal thereafter. Tiu... Wednesday. Deduction no problem at both gantries and other gantries in the afternoon. Thursday, I made sure my cashcard was reading fine on the IU at AMK Ave 5 before the gantry. AGAIN at AMK Ave 1 gantry, ERP failed to read my cashcard. Jin tulan.... reinserted and same thing, IU read cashcard with no problem. Braddell gantry there was a successful deduction. Emailed to LTA on this. Today. Itchy finger me, didnt insert a new cashcard that I bought and insisted to use the 'old' one which was only 4 months old. BOTH GANTRY DIDNT READ. KNN...... What is the problem??? My cashcard is rather new and no problem using it any other gantries. My IU indicated cashcard was in and reading fine but the ERP gantry couldnt detect my cashcard. Is it the IU? the cashcard? or the gantry overloaded with so many deductions per day that it went kuku?
  13. This poll is for the ladies. Lets say you are a high achiever and female. Would you accept a boyfriend or husband earning less than you? And, how much lower do you think your other half should make? There have been many cases of more qualified women settling for less qualified guys. I am also curious about how open people really are about the disparity in earnings, especially in a relationship. PS: Constructive comments pls. Percentage difference calculated based on salary difference between guy and gal divided by the gal's salary.

  15. Hi fellow parents, allow me to make a passionate plea to all of you to buckle and secure your kids and infants when travelling in your vehicle. I've seen many people carrying babies and sitting on the front passenger seat, kids standing with their face resting on the front dashboard with Airbag, kids in the back seats unsecured, babies in rear facing baby seats in the front passenger seats. Here are some true incidents that happen to my friends and relatives: 1) Niece was standing between the front seats and travelling along CTE. Car was involved in a chain collision. Niece flew into the front windscreen. Concussion. My cousin still didn't learn from the incident and continues to let her kids ride unsecured. 2) Friend was driving along Adam road towards thomson road on a rainy day. Car went into a spin and daughter was thrown around the car. Broke her leg. Now walks with a limp. 3) Friend puts rear facing baby seat in the front passenger seat. Wouldn't consider putting it behind - reason: Baby cries. Another common mistake, adult puts on seatbelt and carries the kid. In an accident >50kph, no one can hold on to a 10kg infant. Adult shares seatbelt with infant (infant on adult's lap). In an accident, the adult will be thrown forward and squash the infant. I'm a father of 2 and my kids are trained from the get go, no seat belt, car won't move. Get them use to it from day one, do not give in to their whims. We never plan to get into an accident, it just happens. SO please, be responsible, don't allow chance to hurt your bundle of joy.
  16. To all bros living in CCK or Yew Tee area, pls be careful when you park your car. Some preyers are going around hunting for our cars. just a few moments ago, my 2 way alarm sounded. I run down immed to the MSCP(B/686 CCK Cres)& there was this black car stoppped in front of my car. I ran towards my car and i assume the SOB saw me & immed, the SOB drove off. i tried to give chase but can only catch a eye of the vehicle, and he drove out of the MSCP after that. pls note that the stretch of lots i parked my car was fully occupied,there4 i see no reasons for him to stop in front of my car, blocking the view of my car, and ran instead of locating lots further up upon seeing me. Lucky i changed my alarm to a 2 way system mths back, although there were no dents or damages on my car, but i noticed that 1 of my wheel nuts was loose. imagine if i dun hav 2 way, my rims think gone liao. there4 all bros, pls take note
  17. Decided to go Suntec City on Saturday afternoon from Toa Payoh and trying out a new route by using PIE to KPE to ECP and then Rochor Exit. The travelling time from Toa Payoh to Sentec City had cut down to just 15 minutes . Used to travel about 40 minutes to Suntec by using Thomson Rd, Bukit Timah Rd and Beach Road. Just as I was travelling from PIE turning left into KPE, I was following a van and a m/cycle. Knowing that there are several speed cameras installed inside the tunnel, we all travelled at the same speed limit into the tunnel. As I glance into my rear view mirror, there are no vehicles following behind. Once inside the tunnel after passing a long stretch of single lane, I took to the outer lane (2 lanes) to exit to ECP (City) while the van & m/cycle were in the inner lane. From my rear view mirror, I saw this light blue Subaru WRX with a young couple in it was speeding from the single lane to the double lane. Within a few seconds, he was behind me flicking his high beam at me for travelling at 70 km/h (which is the max speed limit in the tunnel). Unable to give way as on my left, there is this van and slightly behing the van is the m/cycle. Caught in an odd position as I am unable to speed up to overtake the van (for fear of speed camera) to give way to this idiocy WRX driver. Thanks to the van driver knowing my intention, he slowed down for me to filter to the left so as to give way to the WRX. Just after the exit, the speed limit drop to 50 km/h for the slip road leading to ECP (city). If you are the young WRX driver and trying to impress the beside you, travelling to ECP on Saturday at 2.45pm using PIE and KPE. I say this to you, you are either crazy or nuts to speed inside the tunnel (KPE). It had been highly publicised in the Newspaper and TV news that speed cameras are installed inside the KPE tunnel on 24/7 and so far, more than 3400 motorist had been caught for speeding during the first week opening of the tunnel. Why you need to speed inside the tunnel. . It the coming of the special time of the year, Christmas & time for giving. If you have the extra cash to give, kindly donate it to the needy. Gov is rich with more ERP's coming up and increase charges during peak hours. Don't give away money unnecessary by getting a speeding ticket inside KPE tunnel . Furthermore, you will receive 12 demerit points also.

  21. Here is a nice economics student giving ERP theory in Orchard area posted on the Straits Times Forum. Happy reading. Quoted from the url as below. Raise Saturday ERP rates to ease gridlock I REFER to the letter by Ms Naleeza Ebrahim, 'Saturday ERP keeps Orchard Rd traffic going' (ST, Aug 29), and could not agree less with the views of the Land Transport Authority (LTA). From where I live, I have a perfect view of Cairnhill Road and Orchard Road and the weekend traffic gridlock is appalling. There was one Saturday evening when I missed four green lights even though I was just metres away from the traffic junction. Being a student of economics, I understand the relationship between the demand and supply of road utilisation. During the weekends, demand for the use of Orchard Road is far more than what the road network can supply, therefore a price, in the form of ERP, must be imposed to regulate demand so that there is optimal utilisation of the road. Unfortunately, many motorists don't understand the ramifications of not having ERP on Saturdays: emergency vehicles would be caught in jams, endangering the lives of whoever requires their service; goods vehicles would be delayed, resulting in late deliveries and affecting trade; the environment would be damaged by the fumes of vehicles; oil prices might rise in the long run due to wastage of petrol while engines continue running in jams, etc. I had even contemplated writing to LTA to suggest a further increase in ERP rates for the Orchard area during peak periods and on Saturdays. One of the reasons why rates for ERP are so high and are in operation for longer hours is to discourage the use of private vehicles downtown and as an incentive to take public transport. Furthermore, the tax collected from the ERP can be used to fund projects that benefit the environment, to offset the pollution caused by vehicles caught in jams. I thank the LTA for doing what it thinks is best for society. Pavin Limanont http://www.straitstimes.com/ST%2BForum/Sto...ory_153376.html

  23. I've never read a worse extremely sour report by a supposingly respected journo. This guy started on a sour note on having less time to test drive on the new Lancer than the lambo and spend half the article making unfavorable and irrelevant comparisons of the new Lancer. I have never read such an awful totally biased SOUR article just because he cant get good enough time for a test drive. No self respecting journo should never write an article like that. He angle is article in such negative manner deserve to be This guy deserve no respect in the industry and the readers for using his position to write a petty article!
