Major recall for 2012-14 F30 BMW 3 Series with N20/N26 for dangerous loss of braking Delivery of N20 and N26 powered vehicles stopped as a result of power brake assist problem On September 26th, BMW of North America announced to NHTSA its intention to conduct a voluntary Recall on certain 2012-2014 model year BMW 3 Series, 5 Series, X1, X3 and Z4 models equipped with the N20 or N26 engine, produced from May 2012 to August 2013. Affected vehicles in dealer inventories will not be sold or delivered to customers until the recall repair has been performed. Vehicles at BMW vehicle delivery centers will be corrected before shipment to dealerships. The Problem: The oil supply from the intake camshaft to the brake vacuum pump can become restricted. If this happens the brake vacuum pump could fail due to lack of lubrication, resulting in a loss of power brake assist. The hydraulic brakes will still function to stop the vehicle but without power assist. Without assist the driver will need to apply much greater pedal pressure to stop the vehicle. The distance required to stop the vehicle will increase as most drivers will not be able to apply enough brake pedal pressure. In the event of a loss of brake power assist pull the emergency brake and apply as much brake pedal pressure as possible. If your BMW has an electronic parking brake pull up and hold the switch to engage the brake. Move away from traffic and park in a safe location as soon as possible. It seems that neither is there a perfect automaker or a perfect car. As the saying goes, "Nobody is perfect". You see, even such a huge and highly reputable automaker as Toyota can sometime overlook things while manufacturing its cars. The Japanese automaker has made an announcement in which it states its plan to recall 185,000 cars in total globally. Yes, that means that some of the Toyota cars on our shores will be affected by the recall as well. The recall is said to involve the Toyota Yaris (also known as the Vitz in some regions) from the 2010 to 2012 model years. In addition to those, the Ractis and Verso-S from the 2010 to 2011 model years will also be recalled. It is said that this global recall is due to a power steering failure. Toyota mentions that in case water happens to reach the inside of the power steering module, a short circuit could take place and the power steering will fail, forcing the driver to give more efforts while trying to turn the steering wheel. The Japanese automaker also mentions that when the failure emerges, the cars in question will switch on the Electronic Power Steering warning indicator as well as give out a buzzing sound. The recall affects 130,000 Toyota cars in Japan itself, 22,450 cars in Europe, 74 cars in the U.S., and the remaining 32476 cars in other parts of the world. So, if you own a Toyota, prepare yourself for the recall as the Japanese automaker will mail you (besides other Toyota owners, of course) and your dealer will be more than happy (well, they should, anyway) to replace your power steering module. While most automakers will normally recall their cars due to some safety issues, it's nice to see that Toyota recalls its cars due to some issues that are more likely comfort-oriented, as a power steering system is not absolutely needed to drive a car. You see, in the old days, cars didn't have this particular feature at all. But of course, most of us will feel like something's missing if we drive a car without a power steering feature these days.

205,000 Suzukis may face potential recall due to airbag sensor flaws

If you live in the USA and you're a proud owner of either a Suzuki Grand Vitara (MY 2006-2011) or the Suzuki SX4 (MY 2007-2011), it is likely that these vehicles are in for a recall. Yes, you heard it right. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), either of the aforementioned models has some flaws regarding seatbelt and airbag sensors. There have been at least 128 complaints filed related to seatbelt lights, airbag indicators, and airbag warning lights. In total, the number of troublesome Suzukis has reached 205,000 units. Fortunately, Suzuki - as it is supposed to, I think - seems to be aware of the issues. The Japanese automaker has confirmed that the passenger seat load indicator on their lineups for the 2009 model years has an error in its programming indeed. In addition to that, there's also this open-circuit problem that prevents the sensor mat from appropriately determining whether a person sitting in the front seat is an adult or a child. Bad news for Suzuki, these issues affect both the Suzuki Grand Vitara and the Suzuki SX4. Aware that their cars have airbag issues besides the ones mentioned earlier, the Japanese automaker has taken necessary action by upping the seat cushion bottom warranty for its cars to either 10 years or a total of 120,000 miles. Fortunately, it seems that there has yet to be any report of injuries. Nonetheless, you should still expect a recall from the automaker from the land of the rising sun. Well, it seems that Suzuki is really in trouble. Aside from this potential recall issue, the company has also filed a bankruptcy plan not so long ago and it has been court-approved. -

If you own a Hyundai car, especially the Elantra, you might want to be more careful and try to avoid accidents as much as you can. Otherwise, you might risk ending up slicing your ear or probably even other body parts. No, we aren't making things up. This has happened to at least one Hyundai owner that we know of. It's a common thing for airbags to deploy in the event of a crash. However, for this sedan model from Hyundai, the Elantra, the deployment of the airbags just might prove not to be as smooth as expected. Thing is, when the airbags are deployed, a headliner support bracket will also be propelled. Unfortunately, in the case of the Hyundai Elantra, the bracket might become loose and even be completely dismounted. As a result, the bracket might end up flying across the car cabin, carrying a possible threat of causing laceration injuries to any of the passengers inside the car. The Elantra owner we talked about earlier had his ear sliced by this headliner support bracket and had reported it to Hyundai. According to Hyundai, this defect only applies to its aforementioned sedan model units that were built sometime between 2011 and 2013. To address this issue, the South Korean automaker is now recalling 186,254 units of the Elantra affected. For Elantra owners that have yet to receive notification from Hyundai or to find out more about this defect, it's advisable to contact Hyundai. Well, while we honestly think that it's possible to fix this issue simply by applying adhesive strips to the headliner, we do recommend that you contact your local Hyundai dealerships that will apply the fix in the upcoming May. Chances are, you will get the fix for free anyway.

Four carmakers -- Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Mazda -- separately said they would recall a combined 3.39 million vehicles globally in accordance with local regulations, all citing the same malfunction of passenger-side airbags. Japan's transport ministry, which received recall reports from the manufacturers, said the number of vehicles affected would reach 2.92 million. There was no explanation for the discrepancy in the total. A Toyota spokesman said his company alone was recalling a total of 1.73 million vehicles, manufactured between November 2000 and March 2004 in Japan or abroad, due to a defect in passenger-side airbags. Toyota USA said in a statement it was recalling 170,000 vehicles in the United States, out of the company's total recall. "The involved vehicles are equipped with front passenger airbag inflators which could have been assembled with improperly manufactured propellant wafers," the statement said. "Improperly manufactured propellant wafers could cause the inflator to rupture and the front passenger airbag to deploy abnormally in the event of a crash." The company's spokesman in Japan said this abnormal inflation "could also burn part of the vehicle's inside and cause fire". However, he said, there were no recorded instances of this happening. Nissan and Honda released statements giving similar explanations. A Nissan spokeswoman said the company was recalling a total of 480,000 vehicles globally, all of which were manufactured in Japan between August 2000 and January 2004. Toyota and Nissan said the airbags were made by Tokyo-based Takata Corp., while the ministry said the airbag parts were supplied by a single company but declined to disclose the name. "This is a global recall that affects all regions where we do our business," said a spokeswoman with Honda, which is recalling 1.135 million vehicles. Mazda said its recall target would reach 45,463 units worldwide, including 4,384 at home. "We will recall the cars at home while taking the same action in accordance with local regulations of each country," a company spokeswoman said. wah sian....

In 2009, Hyundai and KIA had to recall 700,000 units of their models due to defective brake switches. Unfortunately, not learning from their experiences, these South Korean automakers repeat their mistake and this time, it's even worse. They now have to recall a total of 1.6 million units of cars they have produced due to the exact same problem. The brake switch defect may prevent the brake lamps from illuminating even when the brake pedal is actually stepped on. Of course, this is a big deal as it may trigger rear-end collisions. In addition to that, the defect may fail to cancel the cruise control feature while braking, prevent the push-button starter from functioning, and may even block the gear shift in the neutral position. Both KIA and Hyundai will start contacting dealers and customers of the affected models in June 2013 and will provide necessary replacements free of charge. Some car buyers stay away from the first few batches of an all-new model to allow time for teething issues to be ironed out. There could be some truth in such beliefs. A case in point is the recent recall of five 2013 model year Nissan vehicles due to defective passenger airbag issue. These five models are the Sentra (Sylphy), Altima, Pathfinder, Leaf and Infiniti JX35. According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the seat-mounted sensor could fail to defect the presence of the passenger, resulting in the airbag not deploying in the event of a severe crash. In the April 2013 issue of Consumer Reports, the magazine states that while other hybrid vehicles have an excellent reliability report, the Civic Hybrid has been plagued with a serious battery issue. Since the Civic Hybrid's introduction in 2001, it has sold over 255,000 units globally and is the second best-selling hybrid model in the US. "The Civic Hybrid, which has been a reliable car overall in most years, has a big problem with its drive battery. The 2009 model was the worst - Almost one in five owners needed a replacement hybrid battery in our 12-month survey period. But more than 10 percent of owners of the 2003, 2004, and 2010 models also needed one," said Consumer Reports. On the issue, Honda claims that a software update was issued to older models to prevent premature battery failures. Honda has switched to a new lithium-ion battery pack in the 2012-2013 Civic Hybrid. Hopefully, there will be less electrical issues.

If your Subaru's engine cranks up and switches off by itself, do not be afraid as your car isn't possessed by supernatural forces. What happens is that if the remote starter key fob is dropped, a software glitch could occur and it may randomly transmit an engine start request without pressing the button. The engine will run for up to 15 minutes, but could continue to start and stop until the petrol tank is emptied or the fob battery goes flat. The danger is that if the vehicle is parked in an enclosed area, there is a risk of carbon monoxide build-up which may cause asphyxiation. The problem affects the 2010-2013MY Legacy and Outback as well as the 2012-2013MY Impreza fitted with automatic or CVT transmissions. According to Subaru, around 47,000 cars are affected by the recall in the United States. Subaru dealers will replace the fobs free of charge. This issue with Subaru key fobs also serves as a reminder to all of us to take care of our key fob. Personally, I've left mine in my pocket before and it went into the washing pail. Fortunately, it is still functional.

Porsche recalls 911 Carrera in the US over exhaust pipe issue

Porsche has issued a recall in the US involving 2,263,911 Carrera and Carrera 4 models over exhaust pipe issues. The affected vehicles were manufactured between 7th March to 12th November 2012. "The exhaust tail pipe may fracture and separate from the rear muffler," said Porsche through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The problem affects the Carreras that were fitted with the standard exhaust system. The German brand added that the fallen pipe may become a hazard for other vehicles on the road, increasing the risk of a crash. This is certainly true especially if a motorcycle is right behind. Porsche is not aware of any defects or reported failures on any customer-owned vehicles. All defects determined to date were reported on internal Porsche test vehicles with mileage of over 25,000 miles. If you are lucky enough to own the latest 911, do check that the tail pipe is still attached at the end of the drive. -

Toyota, a brand that is highly regarded for its top notch build quality in the past, has issued two massive recalls involving nearly 1 million Corollas and over 300,000 Lexus IS models. These add to a long list of recalls that have plagued the Japanese carmaker in recent years. The Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles affected are built between December 2001 and May 2004. Most of these defective cars are located in the U.S. For the problematic Lexus IS models, they are manufactured from May 2005 to October 2011. According to Toyota, the airbag control modules in these Corollas are susceptible to internal shorting, which can cause the frontal airbags to inadvertently deploy. For the Lexus IS, the wiper arm nuts might not be tightened sufficiently and in the event of heavy snow buildup on the windshield, one or both of the wipers could malfunction - fortunately, it does not snow in Singapore. Toyota has just regained its top spot in the 2012 global sales chart from General Motors. Such bad publicity might jeopardize their chance of retaining that spot in 2013. -

1.6-litre EcoBoost Ford Fusion and Escape models recalled over fire risk

Ford is recalling 89,153 units of the 1.6-litre EcoBoost-equipped Fusion and Escape models due to fire hazard risk in North America. The engine may overheat and cause fire in the engine compartment. This is the third recall involving the 1.6-litre turbocharged lump. The brand new 2013 Fusion accounts for 15,833 units of the recalled vehicles. Ford confirmed that there have been new reports of these engines overheating, resulting in fires while the engine is running. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. The affected vehicles' instrument clusters may display warning notifications "Engine Power Reduced to Lower Temps" or "Engine over temp, stop safely." The blue oval company is currently working on a repair procedure and has advised owners to stop driving these affected vehicles. EcoBoost is a family of turbocharged, direct injected gasoline engines produced by the Ford Motor Company and co-developed by FEV engineering. The 1.6-litre EcoBoost is currently not available in Singapore's Ford lineup. However, the Volvo S60 and S80 T4 are powered by the motor. -
Volkswagen is issuing a recall for 2,471 units of the 2012/2013 model year beetle due to an incorrectly-coded Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS) control module. The affected cars are fitted with the leather sport seats and were built between February 2012 and August 2012. The problem may cause the front passenger airbag to deploy even if a child is secured in a passenger restraint, causing potentially serious injury. Specifically, if the leather seat gets wet, the PODS may not properly detect a child restraint that is secured on the front passenger seat and thus the airbag will not be deactivated. The problem was discovered during routine factory inspections. Fortunately, according to Volkswagen, no injuries have been reported as a result of this issue. VW will replace the control modules free of charge. Anyway, as a precaution, children in child restraints are always recommended to be secured in the back seat.

According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), General Motors is recalling 12,626 units of the 2013 Cadillac XTS model due to improper rear seat head restraints. "The rear seat head restraints may not lock in the upright position after being folded forward," said NHTSA. "If the head restraint is at its lowest position and it falls forward, it will not meet the height required by the standard. In the event of a vehicle crash, the lowered head restraint may increase the occupant's risk of neck injury." The affected vehicles were made between 12 Oct 2011 and 30 Aug 2012. To GM's credit, the automaker discovered the problem themselves. The single piece rear headrest design looks classy and unique but is sadly lacking in its functionality. The Cadillac XTS is a full-size luxury car that is meant to be a replacement for the STS and DTS. The XTS proved to be a popular model. For the first 10 months of 2012, the XTS is already the 4th best-selling car in the states.

Toyota hit by massive recall over faulty power window switches

Toyota has issued a massive recall involving 7.43 million cars, trucks and SUV due to a faulty power-window switch that runs the risk of catching fire. It is the largest recall since over 12 million vehicles including some Lexus models were found to have faulty accelerator pedals in 2009 and 2010. Fortunately, no death, injuries or accidents have been caused by the issue although the faulty switches could emit smoke. Nearer to home, Borneo Motors, the distributor of Toyota cars in Singapore, commented that 15,000 Toyota vehicles here are affected. A total of 14 models are involved in the recall and in Singapore, the affected models are the RAV4, Vios, Camry and Altis. The problem is caused by improper application of lubricant during the assembly process. The fix would involve putting heat-resistant grease on the switches or replacing them altogether. Lamborghini Gallardo recalled for possible power steering fluid leak

The most popular Lamborghini model to date, the Gallardo, is recalled due to potential fluid leak from the power steering hoses. These unlucky units are built between 2004 to 2006 and both the Gallardo Coupe and Spyder body styles are involved. The recall began in Australia, followed by Canada and now in the U.S. About 1,491 units are affected in the U.S. According to Lamborghini, high pressure hoses for the hydraulic-assisted power steering system may leak under certain driving conditions. Should this occur, a fire could break out if the fluid comes into contact with an ignition source. Lamborghini is notifying the affected owners, who can take their Gallardos to their dealers for repairs at no charge. British Petroleum (BP) has recently announced a recall for approximately 2.1 million gallons of gasoline produced by its refinery in Whiting, Ind. The contaminated gasoline was sold in the northeast Indiana and Northeast Illinois areas. The recall came after reports of motorists flooding car repair shops in northwestern Indiana over a couple of days. According to BP, the contaminated petrol can cause hard starting, stalling and other drivability issues. In a statement issued by BP, the gasoline was blended from 13 Aug 2012 to 17 Aug 2012 and contained a higher than normal level of polymeric residue.
