  1. [extract] Talks are ongoing between Saab Automobile and three car manufacturers on sharing their technology in a move to reduce model-development costs and bolster its recovery, according to Spyker Cars NV Chief Executive Officer Victor Muller, the head of Saab
  2. According to a recent report, Saab will launch five new models by the end of 2013. On sale later this year, the redesigned 9-5 sedan will attempt to establish Saab as a legitimate player in the mid-size luxury segment. It faces an uphill battle against established players such as the A6 and 5 series but has sleek styling, a long wheelbase, and a modern interior. In 2011, Saab will launch the 9-5 Estate and the 9-4X crossover. The latter shares underpinnings with the Cadillac SRX and will be produced in Mexico. Unlike the 9-7X, the 9-4X will be available in Europe. A year later in 2012, the Swedish automaker will introduce the redesigned 93. Expected to be offered as a three- and five-door hatchback, the 93 will ride on a modified version of the Epsilon I platform with parts sourced from various automakers instead of GM parts bin. Last but not least, Saab will introduce the highly-anticipated 92 in 2013. It will ride on another automaker's platform and feature styling inspired by the original 92. It is expected to be slightly more expensive than the MINI Cooper.
  3. Victor Muller has revealed more details about Saab's future product lineup. Speaking with InsideLine, Muller stated the 2013 (or 2014) 9-2 will be "stunning to look at, ingenious and an outstanding premium product." It will ride on a shortened version of the 9-3 platform or a platform from another automaker. Pricing will be 10% higher than the MINI Cooper and sales are expected to total 30,000 to 60,000 units annually. Later this year, the company will introduce a facelifted 9-3. In 2011, Saab will launch the 9-4X crossover (April), the 9-5 Sport Combi (June), and a new 1.6-liter turbocharged engine. For 2012, the company will unveil a redesigned 9-3 which will ride on a modified version of the current Epsilon I platform. Further out, a 9-3 Hybrid will be introduced and an electric vehicle will be launched by 2016. If everything goes according to plan, Muller expects Saab will be profitable in 2012 with sales totaling 120,000 to 125,000 units. Source: insideline
  4. Saab will launch its new 9-5 lineup with the 2010 model year Aero sedan carrying a price of $49,990. The all-wheel drive 300-horsepower, 2.8-liter V6 turbo four-door will actually sit atop the range, with an entry-level 2011 model with Saab's 2.0-liter turbo powerplant coming on stream shortly thereafter with a promised MSRP of "under $40,000." That's ambitious pricing in what already amounts to a very crowded and competent sandbox. For reference's sake, the 2010 Infiniti M37x starts at $48,400 and brings 330 horses to the table, while Cadillac's CTS rings up at $43,465 in comparable all-wheel drive trim with a 304-hp 3.6-liter. The European establishment rings up at $48,925 for Mercedes-Benz's 268-hp E350, and BMW's new 2011 528i will start at $44,500, though both of those segment stalwarts are rear-drive and tend to run comparatively thin on standard equipment. According to Saab's hand-out press release (sorry, no digital version available yet!), the Aero will feature a six-speed automatic gearbox with paddleshifters, so apparently no manual transmission will be available with the V6
  5. Saab has announced UK prices for the upcoming new 9-5 model. Prices begin at
  6. [extract] I love blogging about Saab. Saab is the car most of us know about, we say that it has some performance and some quality but we don
  7. It seems Saab has been saved. The white knight in this highly publicized story is Spyker, a Dutch car manufacturer which sells really exotic cars that seems to be bought and driven by no one in particular. Spyker bought the beleaguered company from General Motors for a sum totaling US$74 million in cash and another US$326 million in deferred shares. The really fantastic thing is that Spyker's CEO had to buy out the company's largest shareholder, a Russian bank tycoon, to go through with the deal. This could show a lack confidence by the bank tycoon in going through with the deal as a shareholder and that he had decided to cash out before things start getting worse. I mean, if you read the Reuters report on the deal, you will know that Spyker has not been profitable since 2000. Sometimes, ambition gets the better of a company and Spyker may have dug its own grave by purchasing Saab. As I stated earlier, no one actually buys the car even if it is quite good. You can find quality in other marques that have better quality, driving pleasure and even resale value. Trying out a Saab and then liking a Saab is one thing. But after that drive the person then plonks out a wad of dollars and buys a Saab is seldom, or almost never done. The guy who buys Saab must be a person who ignores all basic car buying rules and just loves being different, extremely different. In this case being different means that he has to ignore the build quality of an Audi, the institution that is Mercedes Benz, the driving pleasure of a BMW and the soul of an Alfa Romeo. He must be actually insane. Even the bad news of the company winding down has effected people who wanted to try out this brand. In comparison, if there were rumours that a terrorist group intended to blow up AAA Airline's aircraft the first thing that may drop is the price of AAA Airline's shares in the stock market. This is exactly the same thing. It may take a few years for people (who don't read or watch the news) to realize that Saab is still around. And don't be surprised that some actually don't. Anyway, Spyker has also stated that is has the financing to carry out all operations including enough cash to finance new model development. Saab has lost a total of 400 million Euros in 2009 and 300 million Euros the previous year. Spyker as stated has not been profitable and even with financing, things are not as rosy as you think. Spyker took a 400 million Euro loan for Saab and another million Euro loan elsewhere as backup. 400 million Euros is just part of the operating costs of Saab. If the company can lose 300- 400 million Euros in a year, that would mean that the company operates close to double that amount per year. We can say that Saab managed to recoup only half the amount spent, which is a terrible way to do business. We may be watching another Delorean (as stated in the article) or another Rover, which went bust due to a takeover by a consortium who basically bled the company to death. This arrangement may allow Saab to continue for a while, but I do not see this having a fairy tale ending in the long run. Imagine this as a conclusion to this article; Spyker,a company that has not been profitable since 2000 and it has decided to buy over another very unprofitable company with the hope that it can turn both around by having a symbiotic business plan. There is a slight lack of logic if it were put in that simplified way.
  8. A securities and shareholders watchdog group is crying foul over the Spyker purchase of Saab. Dutch association VEB is insisting that Spyker CEO Victor Muller clear up questions about the mysterious financing that surfaced at the last minute of his negotiations with General Motors. Saab-parent GM had insisted that Spyker chairman, and Russian banker, Vladimir Antonov divest his stake in the Dutch automaker as a condition to the Saab transfer. Antonov's stake of 4.6 million shares was bought by Tenaci Capital, owned by Muller. Tenaci contributed
  9. So sad but true. One of my favourite car brands will be no more. Lets take a minute of silence to think of one of the most interesthing car makers ever. GM announces sale with Spyker will not be finalized, Saab will be wound down in an orderly fashion.. Saab Sale Cannot Be Concluded Brand to be Wound Down Detroit. General Motors announced today that the intended sale of Saab Automobile AB would not be concluded. After the withdrawal of Koenigsegg Group AB last month, GM had been in discussions with Spyker Cars about its interest in acquiring Saab. During the due diligence, certain issues arose that both parties believe could not be resolved. As a result, GM will start an orderly wind-down of Saab operations. "Despite the best efforts of all involved, it has become very clear that the due diligence required to complete this complex transaction could not be executed in a reasonable time. In order to maintain operations, Saab needed a quick resolution," said GM Europe President Nick Reilly. "We regret that we were not able to complete this transaction with Spyker Cars. We will work closely with the Saab organization to wind down the business in an orderly and responsible manner. This is not a bankruptcy or forced liquidation process. Consequently, we expect Saab to satisfy debts including supplier payments, and to wind down production and the distribution channel in an orderly manner while looking after our customers." Saab will continue to honor warranties, while providing service and spare parts to current Saab owners around the world. As part of its efforts to become a leaner organization, GM began seeking a buyer for Saab's operations in January. Last week, Saab Automobile AB announced that it had closed on the sale of certain Saab 9-3, current 9-5 and powertrain technology and tooling to Beijing Automotive Industry Holdings Co. Ltd. (BAIC). GM expects today's announcement to have no impact on the earlier sale. As the company continues to reinvent itself, GM has been faced with some very difficult but necessary business decisions. The focus will remain on the four core brands - Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC - and several regional brands, including Opel / Vauxhall in Europe. This will enable the company to devote more engineering and marketing resources to each brand and model.
  10. Hi everyone, I'm interested to buy a used Saab 9-3 Troll version. Saw a 4 yr 1 mth model with car rebate value of 32k currently. However the mileage is 108k and the body according to my exporter friend is not worth more than 1.5k. Thinking of offering 36k-37k max. Do you think it's still a good deal and am I over paying?
  11. GM has announced that it has extended its deadline for potential bidders of Saab, in a move that hands the Swedish car-maker a lifeline for survival. GM is still continuing the wind-down process of Saab though, but in the wake of renewed interest in Saab from Spyker Cars, as well as several other interested parties, GM has extended the deadline for bids from 31st December to 7th January. "We are preparing the wind-down process. At the same time we are open to options, to bids that come in. Therefore the deadline has also been dropped," said Saab spokesman Eric Geers. Spyker CEO Victor Muller has made a final offer for Saab, with a decision to be made soon. Saab has also announced that it will restart production of the new 2010 Saab 9-5 as well as the 9-3 Convertible models. "We have the orders and we have to deliver them as usual. We also have the orders for the 9-3 and others. The factory has to continue again," Geers said.

  13. [extract] The "F" in F1 could stand for "First Aid" now. In a surprise turn of events, Formula One tycoon Bernie Ecclestone and partner Genii Capital emerged as a rival to Dutch super-car maker Spyker Cars NV in making last-ditch efforts to buy General Motors Co.

  19. [extract] Spyker has made a very last minute revised offer which apparently addresses and eliminates 11 key
  20. [extract] General Motors has issued an official announcement saying that it will gradually shut down Saab, following a breakdown in the negotiations with Spyker after "certain issues" arose in the deal. A previous deal by Koenigsegg to buy up Saab feel apart in late November, and General Motors then reiterated that it will shut down the 72-year-old Swedish brand if it is not sold by end of 2009.
