  10. Based on my observation, when markert underperformed or during a market slowdown, Korean cars typically sell well. Remember the period where you see influx of Matrix and Sonata on the road? This accounts for their existence in the Top places in car sales chart. On the other hand When market is generally doing well, you see less of them and their sales actually tumbled. At high time, PIs flushished with the sales of more Japanese imports and someone came out to condem the existence of PIs in Singapore. The black horse, the Made in China, also once claimed to sell 100 QQ on a single day. This is a period where we see more ERPs, road tax reduction, rebate for CNG car, increasing quota and increase in car demand. With recession and less jobs going around the market, are we seeing a repeat of Korean cars coming to top the chart? On the other hand, MIC, which is partially affected by the notorious poison milk case, might have shaken consumer confidence. Hence, unlikly to fight the Korean. Potential MIC buyers are cost concious lot hence may probably give up the idea and stick to BMW for now. For the premium sector, typically represented by high-end conti brands, we are seeing a trend of ADs offering overtrade package to attract the buyers. With COE at it all times low, are we seeing more rich people changing to even newer conti? In all due regards, this has never been a better time for 1st time car buyers and those who are not currently holding onto an existing car. Again with Banks becoming more concious in car loan, this may keep the purchases at bay. What do you think? Thank you. Regards,
  11. GM posts record sales in Asia US auto giant General Motors may be fighting bankruptcy on plunging sales at home but its cars are selling at record levels Asia. Bailed out by the US government recently, GM announced Thursday that it set a new company record for vehicle sales in the Asia Pacific region in 2008. Its sales in the region rose 2.7 percent from the previous year to 1,475,093 units, a company statement said. A further 766,400 vehicles and 599,080 complete knockdown (CKD), or unassembled vehicle sets were exported from the region to other parts of the world. "GM once again outperformed the Asia Pacific market as a whole despite the global economic downturn and credit shortage, which affected most country markets and major automakers in the second half of 2008," said Nick Reilly, GM group vice president. "We benefited from rising demand for our products in the region's key emerging markets," said Reilly, who is also GM Asia Pacific president. In China, domestic sales of GM and its joint ventures rose 6.1 percent to a record 1,094,561 units, the company said. GM was led by increasing demand for products from the Chevrolet and Wuling brands, which registered double digit sales growth. Sales in India increased 9.4 percent to 65,702 units in 2008, a new record for GM, once again led by the Chevrolet Spark mini-car, which accounted for nearly half of sales. It also was helped by the start of regular production at GM's second vehicle manufacturing facility in India, the 140,000-unit Talegaon plant, in September. GM also saw sales in Japan rising 32.0 percent to 10,865 vehicles in 2008, benefiting from a strategy that focused on offering selected products from the Cadillac, Saab and HUMMER brands. GM registered modest sales growth in Indonesia and the Philippines while in Vietnam, sales jumped 45.6 percent to a new record in that country. "GM remains optimistic about the future in Asia Pacific," said Reilly. "We continue to invest in the region's emerging and mature markets to ensure our continued growth in one of the world's most vibrant regions." The US Treasury recently gave a four-billion-dollar emergency loan for GM, part of a 13.4-billion-dollar rescue package for the troubled automaker and Chrysler to stave off collapse amid tight credit and dismal sales. Crazy, huh?

  16. Business Times - 18 Oct 2008 Sales of premium cars and sports models hit the brakes By SAMUEL EE WHEN you are wealthy and worried about the current economic mess, you're more than likely to immediately stop buying more jewellery, wine futures and yes, that new car too. Sales of high-end cars have plunged since the start of this month, with the lowest point being last weekend when some distributors of upmarket Continental cars reported zero bookings over the normally busy Saturday and Sunday period. 'After a week of non-stop news about bank bailouts and hundred-billion-dollar rescue plans, last weekend's order book was zero,' said an executive with a premium dealership. He explained that prospective buyers usually shop around for a car during the week, before coming in over the weekend to put down a deposit. He said the last time he encountered zero weekend sales was during the Sars epidemic. The executive was not alone. At least two other European franchises also did not manage to record any sales over last weekend. All those interviewed spoke on condition that both they and the brands they represent are not named. At one high-end sports car dealership, this month's orders have so far plunged by 50 per cent, according to a source. 'Generally, it's the cars which are in the $250,000 to $300,000 range that get hit first because they are mainly bought by people who got a big bonus or a promotion, what some would call the marginal owners,' he said. ( can afford such expensive cars are consider marginal ) The sports models in his showroom cost between a quarter and three-quarters of a million dollars. He said sales of the more expensive models have also slowed down but not by as much. 'Those who buy $300,000 to $500,000 cars can lose 50 per cent of their stock portfolio but generally, they are still cash-rich,' said the source. 'So thank God there haven't been any cancellations.' But he added that most well-heeled customers such as these may not want to buy anything for now. 'Maybe they are preoccupied with waiting for an opportunity to make more money with whatever assets they have left,' he speculated. A manager of a premium marque agrees. 'We had a lot of showroom traffic last week but no one was signing on the dotted line. That means the product is still attractive, our advertising and marketing are still effective, but people are not willing to commit to a purchase yet. It's like the property market - they still have cash but are waiting to pick up a good bargain,' he said. Another factor is tightening credit, added the manager. 'In a very weak market, most finance companies become more cautious with loans. They may not reject an application outright, but they will reduce the loan quantum from 80 or 90 per cent to 50 to 60 per cent if there is the slightest question about your credit standing,' he said. Before the current credit crunch, local sports car sales had been on an uptrend. Last year, luxury sports cars - defined as those costing $200,000 or more - jumped 97 per cent from the previous year. In 2007, 659 units were sold by authorised distributors, that is, non-parallel importers - up 97 per cent from 334 units in 2006. Driving sales in this luxury band were mainly models in the $250,000 to $350,000 price bracket, such as the Porsche Cayman, BMW 6 Series and M3, and Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class. Together, the 659 units made up less than one per cent of the 81,493 passenger cars sold by authorised distributors in 2007 but they were more profitable than other volume models. Still, the jury is out on how badly the high-end car market will be hit this year. One observer said expensive models such as Bentley, Lamborghini, Ferrari and some Porsche models - all of which start from above $700,000 each - are pre-ordered three to four months ahead of time. He said: 'You won't see demand tapering off yet because there will still be deliveries. So up to December, it won't be an issue. But going forward, there is bound to be some reduction. If we're lucky, it will be 20 per cent down. If we're not, it could be 60 to 70 per cent. It's anybody's guess.'
  17. I don't understand....the recent COE quota cut was only occured in September08, so how can they say "a sharp drop in car sales weighed on overall performance" for the August sales figure. In another paragraph, the article compares the lower car sales figures to the same month in 2007. But I thought the COE quota cut in April this year was not so much to warrant a "plunge of 20.4%" in July. S'pore Aug retail sales up Wed, Oct 15, 2008 Reuters SINGAPORE'S retail sales rose in August, up a seasonally adjusted 0.9 per cent from July, though a sharp drop in car sales weighed on overall performance, data showed on Wednesday. The rise in August after adjusting for seasonal patterns comes after retail sales were unchanged in July compared to the previous month. From a year ago, the August index rose 4.2 per cent, lower than the 11.8 percent rise in July. Economists had forecast August's retail sales to slow as weaker economic growth and a softening labour market weigh on consumer spending. Excluding motor vehicle sales, the August index was 3.8 per cent higher after adjustment for seasonal patterns, following a 2.4 per cent rise in July, the Department of Statistics said. Retail-sale volumes were unchanged from a year earlier after removing the effect of higher prices. Adjusted for seasonal factors, sales in August rose 0.9 per cent from July. Vehicle sales in August fell 12.9 per cent from the same month in 2007. From July, auto sales plunged 20.4 per cent, without adjusting for seasonal factors. Purchases of recreational goods declined 6.8 per cent in August from a year earlier, and fell 3.6 per cent from July. -- REUTERS

  19. Ford sales plunge Auto maker says credit squeeze, customer worries led to 35% drop in sales -- much worse than expected. By Chris Isidore, CNNMoney.com senior writer October 1, 2008: 12:11 PM ET Ford said the credit squeeze led to a 34% drop in sales in September, much worse than even pessimistic industry forecasts. NEW YORK -- Sales at Ford Motor Co. plunged in September as lower gasoline prices were not enough to overcome tighter credit for buyers and dealers during the month. Ford (F, Fortune 500) reported that U.S. sales tumbled 35% from a year earlier. Sales tracker Edmunds.com had forecast a 25% drop in sales in the period. Overall industry sales are expected to fall 20% from year-ago levels. Experts said many consumers were apparently reluctant to make big ticket purchases at a time of economic upheaval. And for those who wanted to buy a car, some were unable to get a loan as the credit markets tightened during the mounting crisis on Wall Street. In addition to auto loans being more difficult to get, a growing number of dealerships also have been hit by the credit crunch and have found it increasingly difficult to get the cash they need to do business. "Consumers and businesses are in a very fragile place," said Jim Farley, Ford group vice president. "An already weak economy compounded by very tight credit conditions has created an atmosphere of caution." The other automakers are due to report later in the day. General Motors (GM, Fortune 500), the nation's largest automaker, is expected to report that sales fell 24% while Chrysler LLC sales are forecast to drop by 37%. But it's not just U.S. automakers that are being hit by the credit squeeze. Toyota Motor (TM), Honda Motor (HMC) and Nissan (NSANY) are expected to post steep declines in U.S. sales as well.

  21. Home > Breaking News > Singapore > Story Sep 22, 2008 3,821 jaywalkers caught 3,821 caught in first six months, up from 2,070 in same period last year By Ang Yiying Jaywalking seems prevalent here, despite it being a crime that can end with offenders being sent to jail. The Straits Times spotted 160 or so people jaywalking during a 21/2-hour period yesterday. The police are also catching more of them. In the first half of the year, 3,821 people were caught jaywalking, up from 2,070 in the same period last year. One favourite jaywalking spot is a stretch of Orchard Road separating a construction site near Somerset MRT station from Orchard Emerald opposite. Despite there being two sets of traffic lights in close proximity, some 15 people crossed the road between the lights during a 30-minute period. In the space of an hour, at least 80 people jaywalked across Grange Road, between Orchard Building and Orchard Cineleisure. Most of them were teenagers or looked to be in their 20s. Some stood on the divider while cars went by. Mr Jimmy Chan, a 22-year-old operator, said it was 'not so convenient' to walk to the traffic light. Marketing executive Joseph Suriya, 28, also cited convenience, adding that he stayed safe by gauging the traffic. At Bideford Road between Paragon and Masjid Al-Falah mosque, up to 50 people cut across the road in half an hour. A woman who wanted to be known only as Madam Lim was jaywalking with her husband, who was holding on to their daughter. The housewife, 35, said her family would have to make a detour if they were to cross at the traffic light. Those who were spotted jaywalking said they knew it was an offence, but added that they had never been caught for it. Jaywalkers can be fined $20 on the spot. If charged and convicted in court, they may be fined up to $1,000 and face a jail term of up to three months. A student, who wanted to be known only as Shaun, had been given a warning several years ago, but it did not deter him. The 19-year-old said: 'You have to be smart and watch out for cars.' Retiree S.L. Ong, 59, has been fined before, but still jaywalks if traffic is light. 'Sometimes, it's a little silly to wait for the green man, especially if there are no cars on the road.' So, can anything stop people from jaywalking? Said Mr Suriya: 'I don't think any monetary penalty will deter people. They don't think they will be caught.' [email protected] Yesh! $20 a pc easy marnee.. so expect more traffic warden to b gg ard to improve sales for LTA soon.

  23. Market turmoil, ghosts scare Singapore home buyers Mon Sep 15, 2008 2:59am By Daryl Loo SINGAPORE, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Private home sales in Singapore slumped 81 percent in August from a year ago, to the lowest level since March as a combination of global financial turmoil and a traditionally unlucky month spooked buyers. Sales of new residential projects, comprising both houses and apartments, fell to 320 units from 1,723 units sold in August last year, and sales were also down 64 percent from the 901 units taken up in July 2008, government data showed on Monday. The Hungry Ghost or Seventh Lunar month, falling in August this year, is widely deemed by the Chinese as an unlucky period for homebuying, although many Singaporeans have ignored the taboo in past years during property booms. "We can blame the ghosts partly, but I think it's more that all this bad news about global banks is creating a real sense of anxiety among homebuyers," said Colin Tan, Singapore-based head of research for property consultancy Chesterton International. Singapore's financial services and export-dependent manufacturing sectors could be hit by global financial turmoil, with U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers filing for bankruptcy protection on Monday (for related stories see [iD:nN13574113]). Worries over Singapore's economic outlook have ended a four-year housing boom in the city-state, as price growth for private homes slowed sharply in the April-June period, rising just 0.2 percent in the quarter. But Tan expected home prices to remain steady in the July-September quarter, as developers hold out for better offers in the hope that market conditions will improve. Developers put up fewer new projects for sale in August, with just 194 units launched compared to 1,885 units a year ago. Concerns about the health of Singapore's property sector has prompted analysts to slash share price targets for developers such as CapitaLand (CATL.SI: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), Keppel Land (KLAN.SI: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and City Developments (CTDM.SI: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz). 24. Channel NewsAsia - Monday, August 11 http://sg.news.yahoo.com/cna/20080810/tap-...lf-231650b.html SINGAPORE: It has been slightly more than a month since evening Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) charges were imposed on vehicles driving into the area around the Singapore River. ADVERTISEMENT While traffic speeds have gone up, businesses in nearby Chinatown have suffered since the ERP kicked in on July 7. In a recent survey by the Chinatown Business Association, some shopping centres reported their sales fell by up to 50 per cent. Tourist landmarks such as the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and the Chinatown Heritage Centre and even good hawker fare could not lure the crowds back. For example, popular Maxwell Food Centre has seen a 40 per cent decline in business. The Chinatown Business Association had expected customers to react in the short
