  2. Let's say a driver got into an accident due to drink-driving. Since most, if not all, insurance do not cover drink-driving, that driver's insurance is void. Now, what about the victims? Can they claim directly from the insurer? Will the insurer pay out first, and then claim against the driver?

  5. Hi Everyone, Is there still any tires shop in Singapore that provide free rotation and patching of tires when we buy a new set of tires from them? Last time Hong Tire along Jalan Jurong K is providing that. Is he still doing that? Any other shops does that? My office just move to Tuas, daily mileage now is more than 100km and also within a month of traveling there, I have patch my tires twice, so just thinking of finding one with this kind of service. Thanks.
  6. With so many strong contenters coming into this market, should we keep our chevy or dump it for something else? I have recently given this some deep thought. (I owned a Optra Jun'05). I check out the following cars 1. Mazda 3 2. Lancer 3 Advante 4 Kia Forte 5 Altis, Axio I was told my Optra is only paper price and that is $22K. I bought it at $59K 3.5 years ago. So the depreciation is 10.6K per year!!! Question, why do I need to change to 1 of the above car? Better performance? It is new? Cheaper? Frankly, not true. It is just the trend that is making my mind working hard to play catch up. My Optra is serving me well.

From what I read last year the project was terminated because of some financial issues and they are looking for potential investors to takeover the project. 11. From STOMP : Posted on 03 Oct 2012 'Will you still travel to the USA in light of security checks like these?' A set of photos of airport security officers in the United States being a little too thorough in their checks for comfort caught STOMPer Alex's attention. In the photos, the security officers can be seen conducting invasive checks by patting down travellers in sensitive areas such as the groin and chest regions of male and female passengers respectively. The STOMPer wrote: "Do you still want to go to the USA?" link: http://static.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sgseen/th...like_these.html Now I rather let them screened me at the exit in Changi Airport....
  12. CNA reported : Some 1,800 arrested for drink-driving in H1 Posted: 15 August 2012 1820 hrs SINGAPORE: The number of people arrested for drink-driving in the first six months of this year has gone up. Some 1,800 drivers were arrested compared to about 1,700 arrested in the same period last year. In its latest clampdown on drink-driving early Wednesday morning, the Traffic Police arrested 19 motorists. The 17 male and two female drivers who failed the breathalyser test were between 23 and 69 years old. The three-hour anti-drink-driving operation was conducted at locations such as Balestier Road, Clemenceau Avenue, Sims Avenue and Outram Road. Motorists convicted of drink-driving will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months. They will lose their driving licence and have to retake the theory and practical driving tests in order to obtain their driving licence again. In addition, first-time offenders can be fined between S$1,000 and S$5,000, or jailed up to six months. Repeat offenders may be punished with a maximum fine of S$30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years. They may also receive up to six strokes of the cane if they should cause serious injury or death. - CNA/cc Look like the Law or Charges against Drink Driving are not deterent enough to prevent many from driving after drinking session... Instead of incidents going down with so many spot checkes by TP, it actually went up in 1st half of the year. Do away with the 1 year suspension of driving licence, make it 3 years ... .. This might deter them....

  15. Really unbelievable that some air forces are still flying this dubbed "Flying Coffin" due to its extremely high accident rate records Guess this Russky-built 60s-era fighter, NATO codenamed Fishbed, still got its fans not out of fancy but out of necessity... From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp...1209074/1/.html Syrian fighter pilot defects in new blow to Assad Posted: 21 June 2012 1950 hrs DAMASCUS: A Syrian pilot was granted political asylum after landing his MiG fighter jet in neighbouring Jordan on Thursday, in the first such defection of a revolt a watchdog says has killed more than 15,000 people. "The council of ministers has decided to grant the pilot, Colonel Hassan Merei al-Hamade, political asylum," Jordanian Information Minister Samih Maaytah told AFP after a government official said the Russian MiG-21 had made an emergency landing at a base in Mafraq near the border. Syria's state television said the warplane was flying near the border when contact was lost at 0734 GMT, and Jordan said it crossed the frontier minutes later. The opposition Syrian National Council said: "The plane took off at high speed and flew at low altitude from a military base between Daraa and Sweida in the south of the country... to avoid detection by radar." "The pilot is from Deir Ezzor (in eastern Syria) and his family is known for its opposition" to President Bashar al-Assad's regime, spokesman George Sabra added. Tens of thousands of soldiers have defected from Syria's armed forces since the revolt against Assad's rule erupted in March last year, thousands of them joining the rebel Free Syrian Army, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. More than 120,000 Syrians fleeing the violence in their homeland have taken refuge in Jordan, according to the Amman government. The United Nations has registered 20,000 of them. Diplomats, meanwhile, stepped up efforts to stem the bloodshed, with Arab states demanding that Russia stop supplying arms to Syria and the United States and Britain reportedly working on a transition plan. "Any assistance to violence must be ceased because when you supply military equipment, you help kill people. This must stop," Arab League deputy chief Ahmed Ben Hilli told the Interfax news agency. Ben Hilli also called for the mandate of United Nations and Arab League envoy Kofi Annan to be revamped, and for Iran's inclusion in talks on ending the conflict. "To make (the Annan) plan work, we need to find a new mechanism and the mandate of the special envoy must be reassessed, so we can be sure that all the sides are observing the plan," he said without elaborating. UN chief Ban Ki-moon discussed the situation in Syria with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Thursday on the sidelines of an international conference in Rio de Janeiro, a spokesman said. The diplomatic flurry came as British newspaper The Guardian reported that Washington and London were working on an initiative for regime change in Damascus based on Annan's UN-backed plan that calls for a "Syrian-led political transition." But Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said any peace plan for Syria that calls for Assad to leave power and go into exile would not work because he would not quit. "A scheme according to which President Assad should leave somewhere before something happens in terms of a cessation of violence and a political process, this scheme simply does not work from the very start," Lavrov said. "It is infeasible because he will not leave." Lavrov, whose country remains in close contact with Assad's government, indicated that the Syrian leader was not ready to negotiate his removal from power because he was convinced he still enjoyed popular support. "I do not think Assad will be sitting down at the negotiating table," said Lavrov, pointing to the results of a widely criticised May 7 parliamentary election which he said showed a majority still backed the Syrian leader. Robert Ford, the US ambassador to Syria, called on Syria's military, from foot soldiers to senior officers, to reconsider their support for Assad, warning those committing atrocities will be hunted down and prosecuted. The US and the international community "will work with the Syrian people to locate the military members responsible for this violence and hold them accountable. And we will support the future Syrian government's efforts to bring those people to justice," Ford said in a message on his Facebook page. In the latest bloodshed, at least 93 people were killed in violence across Syria on Thursday, among them 52 civilians, 38 soldiers, and three rebels, the Syrian Observatory said. At least 13 civilians were killed in the flashpoint central city of Homs and another two unidentified people died in nearby Qusayr, the Observatory's Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP. Streaming video from Homs on the bambuser.com website showed smoke billowing from a residential district as the staccato of automatic gunfire was punctuated by the thud of mortar blasts. The bombardment aborted an attempt by the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Syrian Red Crescent on Thursday morning to evacuate trapped civilians, but the agencies vowed to try again later. "Unfortunately the team had to turn and come back due to shooting," ICRC spokesman Hicham Hassan said. "We are going to try to enter the old city once again this afternoon." Hundreds of people are believed to be trapped in the historic heart of Syria's third largest city and are unable to flee or find shelter because of the fighting, the Geneva-based agency said. According to a new toll it gave on Thursday, the Observatory said at least 10,480 civilians, 3,715 soldiers and 830 army defectors have been killed since March last year. - AFP/ms/de

  18. LOL..... CNA report: 7 in 10 S'pore employers promote staff without pay rise Posted: 13 June 2012 1619 hrs SINGAPORE: Nearly seven in 10 (68 per cent) Singapore employers promote their staff without giving them a pay rise. Singapore comes in third after Chile (79 per cent) and China (70 per cent) as the top three countries that adopt this practice. That's according to a survey by recruitment firm, Robert Half. It polled 1,800 human resource managers across 17 countries. In Japan, only 26 per cent of HR managers promote their staff without pay increases, with 66 per cent saying they would never use the practice. According to the survey, 53 per cent of Singapore companies promote staff to more senior positions without a rise in salary because they prefer to offer a performance bonus instead. Another 47 per cent prefer to offer their employees more flexible working hours. Additional annual leave is also offered by 35 per cent of HR managers in lieu of additional pay. Robert Half said there are risks for companies offering a promotion without a pay rise, and employers should offer adequate compensation either through pay or other benefits to retain their staff. Ms Stella Tang, director of Robert Half Singapore said, "While pay is not the only factor employees consider, if companies do not provide adequate compensation either through pay or other benefits, then they may lose their top performers to the competition. In particular, within the banking & financial services and commercial sectors, companies are struggling to get the right finance and accounting professionals to fill jobs. "If an employee with the right skills tests their worth in the employment market, they may find they have several job offers to choose from. If budget constraints mean no additional monetary compensation can be offered, the reasons why need to be clearly communicated." She added that for some employees, especially those with families, offering more flexible work arrangements may be of more value than money. "It comes down to whether an employee can come to an agreement with their employer that balances their professional goals with remuneration for their efforts," said Ms Tang. - CNA/cc More work, more responsibilities and who don't want pay increase, please tell me ....

  20. From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_800580.html Oil prices down, but pump prices still high Published on May 19, 2012 OIL prices have dropped by an average of 10 per cent since April, but the prices of petrol and diesel, as well as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders for home use, have not seen a similar decrease. Meanwhile, major oil companies are posting multibillion-dollar profits for their first quarter this year. I wonder why the Consumers Association of Singapore has been silent about the development. Interestingly, in July 2008 when the Brent crude price was US$147 per barrel, our pump price for Mogas 95 unleaded was $2.236 per litre before discount. On May 8 this year, the Brent crude price was down to US$111.24 per barrel, while our pump price for Mogas 95 unleaded was $2.17 per litre before discount. What's more, over the past four years, the Singapore dollar has strengthened against the US dollar, from 1.55 to 1.25. So I am baffled as to why consumers here are paying so much more for their LPG, petrol and diesel. David Goh
  21. Yahoo report: Gurkha police officer dies in road accident A Gurkha police officer was killed when he was hit by a car at Upper Serangoon Road on Saturday evening. According to media reports, the accident occurred around 7pm opposite Block 103, Potong Pasir Avenue 1. Channel NewsAsia reported that the off-duty officer was pronounced dead upon the arrival of paramedics. The news agency added that the driver has had his license suspended and has been arrested for causing death through a rash act. The police declined to provide more details when contacted by Yahoo! Singapore. Fate is unpredictable and when times come to go, no matter where you are, you still have to go.... The GC was jogging on the kerb (as reported in ST) and the vehicle can mount the kerb and knocked onto the GC officer. Same as the case of Rochor junction and in the past where when we are young, we tenth to joke with friends that if you kuai lan, one day will hit by aeroplane (hor phuay kee long see) and it did in the early 70's. A farmer (young lady) in Lim Chu Kang was inside the toilet when a SAF fighter plane crashed onto it. Real life incident in 1983 where I never forget was our company having BBQ at Connie Island (off Punggol jetty) and a group of colleagues wanted to return early to mainland. So a motor-sampan (16 seaters) took 8 of them from Connie Island to Punggol jetty. It was extreme low tide and calm with the height to the sea bed was about 1.7meters. Halfway to the jetty, suddenly, the sampan capsized and all was thrown onto the sea. My good buddy was a swimmer and with a 'Life Guard' cert swam towards the jetty trying to get help. The jetty was only 20 meters and ppls on the jetty heard the cries and was ready to rescued them. Of the remainder, only the operator of the sampan could swim and the rest just hold on to the half sunken sampan. My buddy disappeared just meters from jetty. Search whole night and his body was found the next day afternoon..... I believe in fate of life & death, do you?
  22. hire a hitman and settle once n for all Ionescu planned to leave S'pore long before accidents By Claudia Craiu | Posted: 01 February 2012 2215 hrs ROMANIA: Former Romanian diplomat Silviu Ionescu said he had planned to leave Singapore long before the accidents of December 2009. Ionescu is on trial in the Romanian capital Bucharest for two hit-and-run accidents in Singapore which killed one of the victims. Speaking in court on Wednesday, Ionescu said he wanted to be transferred as a vice consul in Spain, which is a position five ranks lower than the one he held in Singapore. This was because of his medical condition and the so-called "pressure" he was facing in Singapore. He claimed he could not reveal the sort of pressures he was allegedly being subjected to, as they constitute a state secret. The head of the HR department in the Romanian Foreign Office, Mr S Moise, will also be called to testify that Ionescu did not have a favourable image in Singapore. More witnesses are expected to testify on April 6 and 11 - the two new dates that were added on Wednesday. At the end of the hearing, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Singapore Embassy in Brussels Jasmine Tan said the Singapore Government continues to closely monitor the progress of the trial. She added Singapore is grateful for the continuing assurances it has received from the Romanian Government and that justice will be served expeditiously. Singapore also continues to be ready to extend legal assistance to the Romanian authorities. - CNA/wk

  25. Since its introduction in the mid 70s, no other hatchbacks have managed to knock the Golf from the throne, is it correct to say this? the old escort, then the focus; the Astra (?), more recently the 1-series, not forgetting a few other european hatchbacks like the 305-308, the magene, C4, Bravo, Alfa hatchback, etc, from japan: Civic hatchback, and all the others HBs, all more or less fail.... So far, which model(s) come close to knocking it off? why it's so hard to beat? (I am not a Golf fan)
