    Skoda Superb

    Hi Guys, I'm starting to look around for a new car, and want to ask your honest opinion (isn't it always? ) on the Skoda Superb, especially first hand opinions from current or past owners.
  4. being intensively doing some 100k +- region cars... model test include 1. skoda superb 1.8T 2. mazda 6 both 2.0 and 2.3L 3. Volkswagen passat 1.8T rest of the model viewed included the honda accord 2.3L from kah, Cefiro etc review... skoda really have a winner here... i can confidently say that the superb classic built is really a notch higher than the passat... with passat going abt 130k region... i expected more from them... but interior look and feel average when compare to superb... engine wise the 1.8T from both car is a gem... with ecu upgrade availabe easily... mazda 6... love the look... sporty... not so ah pek like the passat or superb... but the interior is plastic plastic plastic... ride is less comfi compare the other 2... for 104k... i would rather get a superb... a soild built body and a wonderful engine from volk... at jap 2.0L car price... but any other input from fellow MCFs?? love to learn more stuff... hehehe my target car laio...

Hi bros, how would you rate the 4 cars above? dun want to look for the usual camrys and cefiros. already see too many on the roads. looking for something different. considerations would be space with good handling and drivability. JDM accord though looks sporty but space at the back abit cramp like a 1.6. Thanks

    Superb Test

    Just struggled through a test of the Superb - I say struggled because somewhere halfway thru the, er, twisties, this g8 decides to pull out of a junction without stopping and, to make things worse, maintain a steady 25km/h before pulling the same no-stop stunt at the end of the road. I hope they don't notice the marks my fingernails left on the steering wheel out of sheer frustration - maybe I should have used the Superb's bulk to run her off the road or something.... Anyway, here's my impressions of the occasion - stepping into the car reeked of familiarity. The tactile feel of the dash, switches, grab handles, door handle....even fiddling around with the seat to find a comfortable driving position felt second nature. The overall cabin felt pretty well put together albeit a tad drab (must be a VAG calling card) although some effort to give a sportier feel on the dials worked out pretty well. Being a non-wood (kayu ? ) person, I'd trade the wood inserts for aluminium in a heartbeat, which IMHO goes better with the overall ambience of the cabin, and get rid of that unsightly Sony head unit..... On the feel-good toys front - in addition to the digitally-controlled air-conditioning for the passengers and driver, both the glovebox AND the armrest get the fridge treatment, too, tho' I don't know anyone who'd want to freeze their CD's. There's the usual trip computer tho', sadly, they left out the cruise control on the Classic. An additional $20-odd grand gets you additional toys like a fridge in the rear armrest, sunroof and some other doodats which, honestly, most of us can live without - I'd personally save that extra for additional useful things. Like mods - upsized rims and tyres, chipping...the list goes on..... Funnily enough, the rear seat does not fold at all, but makes do with a ski-hatch which I'd find less useful during my next IKEA trip when I need to add another Benno CD rack to my living room. But, of course, there's the legroom - ah, yes, that - I guess everyone's familiar with that one already so all I'll say is it's HUGE! How much legroom can one have before it's too much ? Drive - for a car its size, I found its ride pleasantly firm with body roll surprisingly well controlled (even in stock form, riding on 16"ers). Understeer (as far as I could tell till my fun was prematurely terminated ) being the order of the day, the Tiptronic is definitely a welcome on the twisties for hard cornering - the auto-box just doesn't seem to cut it under such situations. Brakes, typically soggy and could do with more feeedback - half the time mere tapping didn't seem to provide a whole lot of feedback. With the ubiquitous 1.8T mated to its 5-speed tiptronic found elsewhere in the VAG empire, pick up was decently progressive rather than explosive (pity... )but quite without drama. Strictly from a feel standpoint, its (1.8T unkitted) Passat brethren felt significantly faster. Somehow. For its bulk, I can understand why they don't offer one with the 2.0 like they do with the Passat. But that said, for a car its size, it definitely is tons more fun than many other similarly-classed cars I've driven in recent time, particularly the one I drove down under. So...do I like it? Yes, it's definitely well built, drives well and yes, it's got tons of space. Being a self-confessed VAG-bigot (you know what they're like), driving the Superb quite like what it really was - a bigger VAG. I enjoyed the drive, loved the pace and space and revelled in the familiarity of it all. The only thing niggle for me at this point is, somehow, as thrilling as it was, I didn't feel stirred, like there was some inexplicable spark of excitement that wasn't there. Could this be, for me, a case of being in tounch with something all too familiar ? But that said, can't think of many others in its category offering the same combination of comfort and thrills. Wonder what 18"ers and a chip would do to its ride and handling..... watch this space

  9. So is it indeed... superb? Well, at least in terms or rear legroom it is - only stiltwalkers would complain about being cramped in the back. Furthermore, the runner of the front seats are mounted on the sides, instead of the floor, which frees up even more space space for feet to go under. After a few days though you begin to wonder if all that space is necessary. Still, it's good to know that it's all there. The 1.8T engine and gearbox are highlights, acting as a seamless whole. These are the same units found in Audi's TT, and don't disappoint. Shifting in Tiptronic mode is a particular delight, offering the distinct advantages of having a quicker throttle response compared the full auto mode, while remaining buttery smooth. And the fat torque curve all the way from 1750rpm means not having to stress the engine to reach license busting speeds. In fact, that's how it likes being driven. You can hustle it rapidly along tightish bends in third with minimal fuss, there's surprisingly little understeer for a large car with the engine pushed so far in front. But don't attack the roads the way you would with, say a Civic Type R. The gearbox's shifts can't keep up, the engine runs out of breath too fast, and the car just feels out of shape. Besides, you aren't travelling any faster... It's best fulfilling its duties as a cruiser that just happens to handle decently, when driven smoothly. For a car in its class it might look a little spartan, with a great number of switches on the dash being blanks. Camry lovers will also be disappointed at the lack of fake tress littering the interior, but overall it feels more solid than what most of the Japs offer. At $104,500 (last I checked) it's mighty tempting. Mr Camry and Cefiro may not give it a second glance, but they never look beyond their badges anyway. The Superb is an interesting alternative for those looking at masses of space, polished ride, decent handling and enough oomph for our tiny island and beyond.

    New Superb

    Hi Folks, The superb is here. It's huge. They brought in the 1.8T version. Pricing is very close the other 2l Jap cars. Strangely enuf, they brought in the classic version. Was told the launch will be around late July. Saw the car just as it arrived off the ship. Very tempted, but rule78 (my current ride is 1yr old) is making it impossible now.

Went to pick up my other half, was opposite Czech auto and then I heard loud roar... turned and saw a Silver Superb driven by a lady zooming really fast and it was so loud, probably rev to redline Behind it was a black one driven by a guy. Both Czech Auto SEs I assume. Both cars with number plate "SUPERB" Test cars? Should be ok I guess... if they are cars for delivery ...

Local Skoda Superb review by Carbuyer SKODA OFFERS A SUPERB ALTERNATIVE By Hadi Soedarsono From CarBuyer, Issue 09 Those looking for a European alternative to large sedans like the Toyota Camry and Nissan Cefiro may find the Skoda Superb a worthy proposition. NOW that Skoda is Volkswagen owned, the Czech carmaker is no longer what it used to be. Inferior cars with shady reliability are a thing of the past. The company now makes quality automobiles and sells them at affordable prices. The improvement results from using VW platforms and sharing the same parts bins as its German siblings. Like the Octavia and Fabia models, that are built on the VW Golf and Polo platforms respectively, the Superb is the flagship car that's based on a stretched Passat platform. Compared to the four-door German, the Superb has an extra 100mm between the front and rear wheels, making its wheelbase and overall length comparable to the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The name "Superb" has a lot to live up to for a brand like Skoda, but the Czech company is confident that it has rolled out a winner. Furthermore, "Superb" is a traditional name from Skoda's heritage which was given to its flagship sedans during the 1930s and 40s. DRIVING IT The Superb comes with several engine variants, but only the 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder makes it here. The 150bhp unit is smooth and lag-free, but becomes a tad raucous above 4000rpm. It's also a little sluggish during acceleration. However, the ultra-responsive five-speed automatic gearbox helps make overtaking a breeze. Shift quality is flawless in auto mode and there's also a Tiptronic function for you to change gears manually. Although the instantaneous shifting response in Tiptronic mode is well suited for spirited driving, the Superb is more at home when driven in a laid-back manner. The plush suspension provides a cushioned ride under most road conditions, while tyre and wind noise intrusion is minimal. If the Superb is pushed hard around the corners, there is hardly any drama. The tyres grip religiously onto the asphalt and the steering remains nicely weighted and communicative with the only complaint being body roll that could stand to be a little more subdued. INSIDE IT Step into the leather-clad cabin and you will find Passat bits everywhere, which is no bad thing. The dashboard is made from first-class materials and expensive-feeling switchgear. Build quality is bombproof and you won't find any uneven panel gaps. The seats are comfortable and supportive, but the all-black colour scheme makes the cockpit look a little bland. Cabin space is generous in all directions and we especially like the extended rear cabin with its own dedicated air-con vents. Further back, the boot is voluminous and well shaped. It should be able to swallow more than two golf bags. DOLLARS AND SENSE Competitively priced against the Nissan Cefiro and Toyota Camry, the Superb is listed at $108,000 with COE. Some of the highlights that come standard include four airbags, climatronic air-conditioning, multi-function information display and trip computer. VERDICT If you remove the Skoda badges from the Superb you could easily fool anyone into thinking that it is a German car - even its engine is shared with the VW Passat and Audi A4 1.8T. The exceptional build quality and classy cabin materials make it feel like a premium product with a higher price tag. Compared to its intended Japanese rivals, this large Czech feels more solid and posh, albeit not as well equipped. While the Superb is about as powerful as the similarly priced Cefiro and Camry, it's humbler engine size will save you a couple of bucks in road tax as well. Finally, keen drivers might find that the Superb lacks the pace of its larger-engined rivals. However, it is not Skoda's intention to make its flagship car overly sporty in the first place. The Superb is in all honesty about comfort and luxury at an affordable price. In these respects, it is indeed, Superb. SUPERB HISTORY LARGE Skodas are not new. The first Superb was launched in 1934. It had a 2,492cc 6-cylinder engine and produced 55bhp which was good enough to take it to a maximum speed of 110km/h. Over the next decade, succeeding generations of the Superb had larger and larger engines until 1949 where the fifth-generation model had a 3,991cc V8 powerplant that produced 93bhp and reached a top speed of 135km/h. The last Superb was built in 1949, and only 10 units of this variant were ever made. However, the Superb's turbo charged engine will see it gathering pace long after the Cefiro's unit has run out of steam.
