  2. My wife is traveling to USA this Friday by plane. The air ticket agent is asking her to apply for ESTA online, cost US$39. But I thought Singaporeans are already under the Visa Waiver Program. So don't really need to apply for visa, or to check for eligibility to enter USA. Anyone can advice really need to spend the US$39 to get this ESTA. If not, will there be 'trouble' when at the USA customs?

  6. Hi, Under what circumstances can LTA approved certain Exhaust system for specified car brand/model? Due to popular demand? Workshop? If specified workshop to propose certain exhaust system for specified car brand/model, does the workshop have to pay a certain amount for it to be approved? I'm actually thinking of getting reputated workshop to get submit exhaust system to certified exhaust system for Hyundai Avante and of cos, the demand for it must be met before i actually propose it to the workshop. Your input to this big question mark in my mind will be much appreciated.
  7. Another don't know head, don't know tail ignorant foreigner with one of who run-of-the-mill-you-don't-know-how-lucky-you-are (yawn) letters and only look at things from one narrow perspective. How ancient is the British metro? Does he know ours is a modern world-class land transportation system according to LTA? From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_753580.html Disruptions quite normal for British metro and rail Published on Jan 10, 2012 AS A Briton on holiday in Singapore this New Year, I am amused by the brouhaha over the disruptions to the MRT system, which culminated in the resignation of SMRT chief executive officer Saw Phaik Hwa ('SMRT chief quits'; last Saturday). In Britain, disruptions to city metro systems and the national rail are as ubiquitous as char siew paus here. When travelling in London, it is quite normal for 'signalling problems' to mean that commuters have to find alternative transport, sometimes wasting hours of time. It is also quite normal for a train to another city to be cancelled at the last minute, wasting half a day, and disrupting schedules. I have to say to Singaporeans who enjoy the MRT system here: The MRT is brilliant; it is cheap, efficient, clean and smooth... I can go on. Given how wonderful it is, I think the occasional lapse in efficiency can be forgiven. Cut Ms Saw some slack, and be thankful you don't live in Britain! Dr Daniel Emlyn-Jones

  10. Bros, one of my speakers in my car is spoilt and needs to be replaced. As my ride is pre-owned, I am not sure if the speaker / sound system is stock. Questions: 1. How do I check? Or necessary to check? 2. Should I change 1 speaker? Or both (so as to 'match' left and right)? 3. Should I change the whole set altogether? My CD changer is in the glove now (loads 5 discs individually). So I guess quite an old set... 4. Where is a good (and honest) place for me to go and get the necessary (whether change 1 speaker only or whole set) done? And typically how long would it take? 5. Any other things I need to know? Many thanks
  11. As we move further into the 21st century, more automakers are developing numerous technologies for their vehicles. From sensors that detect objects in the dark to even automated parking assistance. Nissan, including its luxury division Infiniti, has revealed three new safety technology developments (named Safety Shield) that will be featured on their vehicles in the near future. The automaker
  12. Let's say (hypothetically, of course), in a fictitious country S, that Candidates A and B are in the midst of a really tight electoral race run on the First Past The Post (FPTP) system. The news announces that 60% of the votes have already been counted, and Candidate B leads A by a margin of 2%. Total electorate size = 2 million, meaning that 1.2 million of the votes have already been counted. There are two other Candidates C and D, who collectively are only going to garner something like 30% of the votes, with 25% going to C and 5% going to D. So, at the point of the news announcement, the breakdown can be presumed to be something very like: A: 34% (408,000) B: 36% (432,000) C: 25% (300,000) D: 5% (60,000) Total: 100% (1.2 million) Let's focus on A and B. Now, with 1.2 million votes already counted, basic statistics will allow a very precise estimate of the ultimate victor (for example, by the techniques detailed in Section 2 of the attachment (I can't link it, for some reason). Cutting out the math (I can show it if desired): The standard error for the difference in proportions between B and A is about 0.074%. That means that the "true" difference between the proportional difference between B and A lies between 1.85% and 2.14% with a 95% probability. This is called a 95% confidence interval. That means that it's 95% probable that B would've beaten A by a margin of at least 1.85% even if an "infinite" number of votes were polled. In fact, the 99.9% confidence interval (1.76% - 2.24%) is still very convincing for a victory for B over A. That means there's less than a one-in-a-thousand chance that B's victory margin over A is going to be below 1.76%. It can really only be called a "wash" (unpredictable result) if the confidence interval of the difference between the polled proportions encompasses zero. That would take more than 26 standard errors. Want to know the probability of that? There are too many zeroes to bother with - to all intents and purposes, it's a statistical "impossibility". In other words, at the point where 60% of the 2 million votes had been counted, and leading by a 2% (in fact, a "2-plus percent") margin, B should've been celebrating with a very strong assurance of ultimate victory. Yet, it was the *reverse* that actually happened in our hypothetical example, and A won. The only way in which such an "upset" could've legitimately happened is if the initial sample of 1.2 million (!) was a biased one (B over A). In other words, if the voting preference of the remaining 40% of the electorate was strongly biased the other way (A over B). This is possible. But considering that this was a national election, and the candidates were widely regarded as "non-partisan", this is hardly probable. I'll leave you to work out the implications of all this on our little hypothetical example. As it turns out, Candidate D in our little story was, coincidentally, a statistician. And Candidate A held a doctorate in Applied Math. I wonder if they found something privately humourous in all this. It later emerged that the margin of victory was quite a bit less than the votes declared invalid. Assuming (naturally) that our hypothetical vote was conducted with the utmost attention to propriety, it seems a little strange that one could declare a "clear victor" with such a narrow margin, such that even minor perturbations in the subjective decision process of deciding which votes were valid could've reversed the result. If nothing else, this should serve as a cautionary tale against keeping the FPTP system, and this is why some other democracies have done away with such a system and adopted something fairer. 14. http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showthre...=1#post57900199 Sounds pretty interesting. Let peasants get a chance to own cars but limited to small cars only. So those who say need car cannot complain about car too expensive cannot buy. Rich people don't have to bother about queuing up for COE. Just pay and get the car.
  15. Bros, I need help. Am driving a A6 2.4MU. Recently the oil leak sign came on and I had it fixed with a workshop visit. Then as I drove out of the workshop, the ECS orange light came on. Also the car started to feel sluggish. The car also needed a few cranks to start (usually starts instantaneously). Brought it back to check and have been told the Impulse Sender is faulty. This was replaced by Premium Automobile yesterday. PA told me that there are some other errors detected after the change of the Impulse Sender (another diagnostic test was conducted). However requires more time to investigate. But I need to use the car so took the car back. The charges by PA was ridiculous high. I paid 4 times the amount VAG would have charged me. But I went to PA as I was hopeful that the problem would go awat immediately (only PA has stock of the impulse sender). Would appreciate any advice here. Thanks
